We compute the $RO(A)$-graded coefficients of $A$-equivariant complex and real topological $K$-theory for $A$ a finite elementary abelian $2$-group, together with all products, transfers, restrictions, power operations, and Adams operations.
We give a description of real equivariant bordism for elementary abelian 2-groups, which is similar to the description of complex equivariant bordism for the group S^1 x ... x S^1 given by Hanke in 2005.
Let $G$ be a elementary abelian $2$-group and $X$ be a manifold with a locally standard action of $G$. We provide a criterion to determine the syzygy order of the $G$-equivariant cohomology of $X$ with coefficients over a field of characteristic two using a complex associated to the cohomology of the face filtration of the manifold with corners $X/G$. This result is the real version of the quotient criterion for locally standard torus actions developed by M. Franz in arXiv:1205.4462.
In this paper, we calculate the image of the connective and periodic rational equivariant complex $K$-theory spectrum in the algebraic model for naive-commutative ring $G$-spectra given by Barnes, Greenlees and Kędziorek for finite abelian $G$. Our calculations show that these spectra are unique as naive-commutative ring spectra in the sense that they are determined up to weak equivalence by their homotopy groups. We further deduce a structure theorem for module spectra over rational equivariant complex $K$-theory.
In this paper, we build on the work from our previous paper (arXiv:2002.01556) to show that periodic rational $G$-equivariant topological $K$-theory has a unique genuine-commutative ring structure for $G$ a finite abelian group. This means that every genuine-commutative ring spectrum whose homotopy groups are those of $KU_{\mathbb{Q},G}$ is weakly equivalent, as a genuine-commutative ring spectrum, to $KU_{\mathbb{Q},G}$. In contrast, the connective rational equivariant $K$-theory spectrum does not have this type of uniqueness of genuine-commutative ring structure.
In this paper, we determine the connective K-cohomology with reality of elementary abelian $2$-groups as a module over $\mathbb{Z}[v_1,a]$, where $v_1$ is the equivariant Bott class and $a$ the Euler class of the sign representation. This gives in particular a new approach to the computation of the connective real K-theory of such groups. The originality here is to make all computations in the $\mathbb{Z}/2$-equivariant stable category, considering only $\mathbb{Z}/2$-equivariant cohomology theories, and to use relative homological algebra over certain subalgebras of the equivariant Steenrod a…
We extend the work of Allday-Franz-Puppe on syzygies in equivariant cohomology from tori to arbitrary compact connected Lie groups G. In particular, we show that for a compact orientable G-manifold X the analogue of the Chang-Skjelbred sequence is exact if and only if the equivariant cohomology of X is reflexive, if and only if the equivariant Poincare pairing for X is perfect. Along the way we establish that the equivariant cohomology modules arising from the orbit filtration of X are Cohen-Macaulay. We allow singular spaces and introduce a Cartan model for their equivariant cohomology. We al…
We give a conjectural description for the kernel of the map assigning to each finite $\mathbb Z_p$-free $G\times\mathbb Z_p$-set its rational permutation module where G is a finite p-group. We prove that this conjecture is true when G is an elementary abelian p-group or a cyclic p-group.
For a finite abelian group $G$, we compute the $G$-equivariant formal group law corresponding to the $G$-equivariant complex cobordism spectrum with its canonical complex orientation.
The structure of the BP<n>-cohomology of elementary abelian p-groups is studied, obtaining a presentation expressed in terms of BP-cohomology and mod-p singular cohomology, using the Milnor derivations. The arguments are based on a result on multi-Koszul complexes which is related to Margolis's criterion for freeness of a graded module over an exterior algebra.
Let $G$ be a compact Lie group and let $U$ and $V$ be finite-dimensional real $G$-modules with $V^G=0$. A theorem of Marzantowicz, de Mattos and dos Santos estimates the covering dimension of the zero-set of a $G$-map from the unit sphere in $U$ to $V$ when $G$ is an elementary elementary abelian $p$-group for some prime $p$ or a torus. In this note, the classical Borsuk--Ulam theorem will be used to give a refinement of their result estimating the dimension of that part of the zero-set on which an elementary abelian $p$-group $G$ acts freely or a torus $G$ acts with finite isotropy groups.
The connective ku-(co)homology of elementary abelian 2-groups is determined as a functor of the elementary abelian 2-group. The argument requires only the calculation of the rank one case and the Atiyah-Segal theorem for KU-cohomology together with an analysis of the functorial structure of the integral group ring. The methods can also be applied to the odd primary case. These results are used to analyse the local cohomology spectral sequence calculating ku-homology, via a functorial version of local duality for Koszul complexes. This gives a conceptual explanation of results of Bruner and Gre…
A general notion of detection is introduced and used in the study of the cohomology of elementary abelian 2-groups with respect to the spectra in the Postnikov tower of orthogonal K-theory. This recovers and extends results of Bruner and Greenlees and is related to calculations of the (co)homology of the spaces of the associated Omega-spectra by Stong and by Cowen Morton.
The equivariant cohomology for actions of compact connected abelian groups and elementary abelian p-groups have been widely studied in the last decades. We study some of these results on actions of finite cyclic groups over a field of positive characteristic. In particular, we study the module structure of the equivariant cohomology over the cohomology of the classifying space and we provide a criterion for freeness over this ring and the polynomial subring of it. We apply these results to canonical actions of finite cyclic groups on polyhedral products arising from the boundary of a polygo
In this paper, we prove an equivariant version of the classical Dold-Thom theorem. Associated to a finite group, a CW-complex on which this group acts and a covariant coefficient system in the sense of Bredon, we functorially construct a topological abelian group by the coend construction. Then we prove that the homotopy groups of this topological abelian group are naturally isomorphic to the Bredon equivariant homology of the CW-complex. At the end we present several examples of this result.
Collection of (equivariant) $\rm{PL}$-mappings admitting a relative abelian, cyclic, quaternionic, bicyclic, and quaternionic-cyclic structures are constructed.
This paper generalizes Bismut's equivariant Chern character to the setting of abelian gerbes. In particular, associated to an abelian gerbe with connection, an equivariantly closed differential form is constructed on the space of maps of a torus into the manifold. These constructions are made explicit using a new local version of the higher Hochschild complex, resulting in differential forms given by iterated integrals. Connections to two dimensional topological field theories are indicated. Similarly, this local higher Hochschild complex is used to calculate the 2-holonomy of an abelian gerbe…
Let A be a finite abelian group. We set up an algebraic framework for studying A-equivariant complex-orientable cohomology theories in terms of a suitable kind of equivariant formal groups. We compute the equivariant cohomology of many spaces in these terms, including projective bundles (and associated Gysin maps), Thom spaces, and infinite Grassmannians.
Let $X$ be a topological space upon which a compact connected Lie group $G$ acts. It is well-known that the equivariant cohomology $H_G^*(X;\Q)$ is isomorphic to the subalgebra of Weyl group invariants of the equivariant cohomology $H_T^*(X;\Q)$, where $T$ is a maximal torus of $G$. This relationship breaks down for coefficient rings $\k$ other than $\Q$. Instead, we prove that under a mild condition on $\k$ the algebra $H_G^*(X,\k)$ is isomorphic to the subalgebra of $H_T^*(X,\k)$ annihilated by the divided difference operators.
We determine the BP-module structure, mod higher filtration, of the main part of the BP-homology of elementary abelian 2-groups. The action is related to symmetric polynomials and to Dickson invariants.
The smooth action of a compact Lie group on a compact manifold can be resolved to an iterated space, as made explicit by Pierre Albin and the second author. On the resolution the lifted action has fixed isotropy type, in an iterated sense, with connecting fibrations and this structure descends to a resolution of the quotient. For an abelian group action the equivariant K-theory can then be described in terms of bundles over the base with morphisms covering the connecting maps. A similar model is given, in terms of appropriately twisted deRham forms over the base as an iterated space, for deloc…
Let $M$ be a covariant coefficient system for a finite group $G$. In this paper we analyze several topological abelian groups, some of them new, whose homotopy groups are isomorphic to the Bredon-Illman $G$-equivariant homology theory with coefficients in $M$. We call these groups equivariant Dold-Thom topological groups and we show that they are unique up to homotopy. We use one of the new groups to prove that the Bredon-Illman homology satisfies the infinite-wedge axiom and to make some calculations of the 0th equivariant homology.
We completely calculate the $RO(G)$-graded coefficients of ordinary equivariant cohomology where $G$ is the dihedral group of order $2p$ for a prime $p>2$ both with constant and Burnside ring coefficients. The authors first proved it for $p=3$ and then the second author generalized it to arbitrary $p$. These are the first such calculations for a non-abelian group.
We determine all finite maximal elementary abelian group actions on compact oriented surfaces of genus $σ\geq 2$ which are unique up to topological equivalence. For certain special classes of such actions, we determine group extensions which also define unique actions. In addition, we explore in detail one of the families of such surfaces considered as compact Riemann surfaces and tackle the classical problem of constructing defining equations.
For every abelian compact Lie group A, we prove that the homotopical A-equivariant complex bordism ring, introduced by tom Dieck (1970), is isomorphic to the A-equivariant Lazard ring, introduced by Cole-Greenlees-Kriz (2000). This settles a conjecture of Greenlees. We also show an analog for homotopical real bordism rings over elementary abelian 2-groups. Our results generalize classical theorems of Quillen (1969) on the connection between non-equivariant bordism rings and formal group laws, and extend the case $A = C_2$ due to Hanke-Wiemeler (2018). We work in the framework of global homotop…
For T an abelian compact Lie group, we give a description of T-equivariant K-theory with complex coefficients in terms of equivariant cohomology. In the appendix we give applications of this by extending results of Chang-Skjelbred and Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson from equivariant cohomology to equivariant K-theory.
Using equivariant obstruction theory we construct equivariant maps from certain classifying spaces to representation spheres for cyclic groups, product of elementary Abelian groups and dihedral groups. Restricting them to finite skeleta constructs equivariant maps between spaces which are related to the topological Tverberg conjecture. This answers negatively a question of Özaydin posed in relation to weaker versions of the same conjecture. Further, it also has consequences for Borsuk-Ulam properties of representations of cyclic and dihedral groups.
Tate cohomology (as well as Borel homology and cohomology) of connective K-theory for $G=(\mathbb{Z}/2)^n$ was completely calculated by Bruner and Greenlees. In this note, we essentially redo the calculation by a different, more elementary method, and we extend it to $p>2$ prime. We also identify the resulting spectra, which are products of Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectra, and finitely many finite Postnikov towers. For $p=2$, we also reconcile our answer completely with the result of Bruner and Greenlees, which is in a different form, and hence the comparison involves some non-trivial combinatorics…
We compute the equivariant bordism of free oriented $(\mathbb{Z}/p)^n$-manifolds as a module over $Ω_*^{SO}$, when $p$ is an odd prime. We show, among others, that this module is canonically isomorphic to a direct sum of suspensions of multiple tensor products of $Ω^{SO}_*(B \mathbb{Z}/p)$, and that it is generated by products of standard lens spaces. This considerably improves previous calculations by various authors. Our approach relies on the investigation of the submodule of the Brown-Peterson homology of $B (\mathbb{Z}/p)^n$ generated by elements coming from proper subgroups of $(\mathbb{…
