Considered is the direct ${\cal N}=1$ SQCD-like $Φ$-theory with $SU(N_c)$ colors and $3N_c/2< N_F<2N_c$ flavors of light quarks ${\overline Q},\,Q$. Besides, it includes $N^2_F$ additional colorless but flavored fields $Φ_{i}^{j}$ with the large mass parameter $μ_Φ\ggΛ_Q$, interacting with quarks through the Yukawa coupling. In parallel, is considered its Seiberg's dual variant, i.e. the $dΦ$-theory with $(N_F-N_c)$ dual colors, $N_F$ flavors of dual quarks ${\overline q},\,{q}$ and $N_F^2$ elementary mion fields $M^i_j\rightarrow ({\overline Q}_j Q^i)$.
In considered here vacua, the quarks of both theories are in the conformal regimes at scales $μ<Λ_Q$. The mass spectra are calculated in sections 4 and 5. It is shown that they are different in the direct and dual theories, in disagreement with the Seiberg hypothesis about equivalence of two such theories.
Besides it is shown in the direct theory that a qualitatively new phenomenon takes place: the seemingly heavy fields $Φ$ `return back' and there appear two additional generations of light $Φ$-particles with small masses $μ^{\rm pole}_{2,3}(Φ)\llΛ_Q$.
In Conclusions also presented comparison of mass spectra of these two theories for such values of parameters when the direct theory is in the very strong coupling regime, while the dual one is in the weak coupling IR-free logarithmic regime. It is shown that mass spectra of these two theories are parametrically different in this case.
Mass Spectra in ${\cal N}=1$ SQCD, in ${\cal N}=1$ SQCD-type theory and in softly broken ${\cal N}=2\rightarrow {\cal N}=1$ SQCD. And problems with the ${\cal N}=1$ Seiberg duality
This paper continues our previous study of similar theories in \cite{ch5}. We also consider here the ${\cal N}=1$ SQCD-like theories with $SU(N_c)$ colors (and their Seiberg's dual with $SU(N_F-N_c)$ dual colors) and $N_F$ flavors of light quarks, and with $N_F^2$ additional colorless flavored fields $Φ^j_i$, but now with $N_F$ in the range $2N_c<N_F<3N_c$. The multiplicities of various vacua and quark and gluino condensates in these vacua are found. The mass spectra of the direct and Seiberg's dual theories in various vacua are calculated within the dynamical scenario which assumes that quark…
This paper continues our studies in arXiV:1608.06452 [hep-th] of ${\cal N}=1$ gauge theories in the strongly coupled regimes. We also consider here the ${\cal N}=1$ SQCD-like theories with $SU(N_c)$ colors (and their Seiberg's dual), with $N_F$ flavors of light quarks and $N_F^2$ additional colorless flavored scalars $Φ^j_i$, but now with $N_F$ in the range $N_F>3N_c$. The mass spectra of these direct and dual theories in various vacua are calculated within the dynamical scenario introduced by the author in [8]. It assumes that quarks in such ${\cal N}=1$ SQCD-like theories without elementary …
Considered is the ${\cal N}=1$ SQCD-like theory with $SU(N_c)$ colors and $0< N_F<2N_c$ flavors of equal mass $0< m_Q\llΛ_Q$ quarks. Besides, it includes $N^2_F$ additional colorless but flavored fields $Φ_{i}^{j}$, with the large mass parameter $μ_Φ\ggΛ_Q$. The mass spectra of this $Φ$-theory are first directly calculated at $0<N_F<N_c$ where the quarks are weakly coupled, in all different vacua with the unbroken or spontaneously broken flavor symmetry $U(N_F)\rightarrow U(n_1)\times U(n_2)$. Further, the mass spectra of this direct $Φ$-theory and its Seiberg's dual variant, the $dΦ$-theory, …
N=1 SQCD with SU(N_c) colors and N_F flavors of light quarks is considered within the dynamical scenario which assumes that quarks can be in two different phases only. These are: a) either the HQ (heavy quark) phase where they are confined, b) or they are higgsed, at the appropriate values of parameters of the Lagrangian. The mass spectra of this (direct) theory and its Seiberg's dual are obtained and compared, for quarks of equal or unequal masses. It is shown that in all cases when there is the additional small parameter at hand (it is 0<(3N_c-N_F)/N_F << 1 for the direct theory, or its anal…
We study the quantum Seiberg-Witten periods of ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal field theories which are obtained by taking the scaling limit of ${\cal N}=2$ $SU(N_c)$ SQCD around the superconformal fixed point. The quantum Seiberg-Witten curves of these superconformal field theories are shown to be classified into the Schrödinger type and the SQCD type, which depend on flavor symmetry at the fixed point. We study the quantum periods and compute the differential operators which relate the quantum periods to the classical ones up to the fourth-order in the deformation parameter.
We calculate gaugino and meson condensates in N=1 SQCD theory with SU(N_c) gauge group and N_f < 2N_c matter flavours, by deforming the pure N=2 Super-Yang-Mills plus fundamental matter action with a mass term for the adjoint scalar superfield. This follows similar recent work by Konishi and Ricco hep-th/0306128 for the case without fundamental matter.
We consider N=1 supersymmetric quantum chromodynamics (SQCD) with the gauge group U(N_c) and N_c+N quark flavors. N_c flavors are massless; the corresponding squark fields develop (small) vacuum expectation values (VEVs) on the Higgs branch. Extra N flavors are endowed with small (and equal) mass terms. We study this theory through its Seiberg's dual: U(N) gauge theory with N_c +N flavors of "dual quark" fields plus a gauge-singlet mesonic field M. The original theory is referred to as "quark theory" while the dual one is termed "monopole theory." The suggested mild deformation of Seiberg's pr…
The dynamical scenario is considered for N=1 SQCD, with N_c colors and N_c<N_F<3N_c flavors with small but nonzero current quark masses m_Q\neq 0, in which quarks form the diquark-condensate phase. This means that colorless chiral quark pairs condense coherently in the vacuum, <{\bar Q}Q>\neq 0, while quarks alone don't condense, <Q>=<\bar Q>=0, so that the color is confined. Such condensation of quarks results in formation of dynamical constituent masses μ_C \gg m_Q of quarks and appearance of light "pions" (similarly to QCD). The mass spectrum of SQCD in this phase is described and compariso…
N=1 SQCD with N_c colors and two types of light quarks: N_l flavors with smaller masses m_l and N_h=N_F-N_l flavors with larger masses m_h, N_c<N_F<3N_c, 0<m_l \leq m_h \ll Λ, is considered within the dynamical scenario in which quarks can form the coherent colorless diquark-condensate. There are several phase states at different values of parameters r=m_l/m_h, N_l, and N_F. Properties of these phases and the mass spectra therein are described.
We consider the ${\cal N}=1$ $SU(N_c)$ SQCD-like (direct) theory (and its Seiberg's dual with $SU(N_F-N_c)$ dual colors), and with $N_F$ flavors of light quarks ${\overline Q}_j, Q^i$ with the mass term in the superpotential $m_Q{\rm Tr}({\overline Q} Q),\,\, m_Q\llΛ_Q$. Besides, there are $N_F^2$ additional colorless but flavored fields $Φ^j_i$ with the large mass parameter $μ_Φ\ggΛ_Q$. But now considered is the region $N_c+1<N_F<3N_c/2$ where the UV free direct $SU(N_c)$ theory is strongly coupled at scales $μ<Λ_Q$. The mass spectra of this direct theory in various vacua and at different val…
We discuss the degeneration limits of d=4 superconformal indices that relate Seiberg duality for the d=4 N=1 SQCD theory to Aharony and Giveon-Kutasov dualities for d=3 N=2 SQCD theories. On a mathematical level we argue that this 3d/4d connection entails a new set of non-standard degeneration identities between hyperbolic hypergeometric integrals. On a physical level we propose that such degeneration formulae provide a new route to the still illusive Seiberg dualities for d=3 N=2 SQCD theories with SU(N) gauge group.
We consider the Seiberg-Witten Toda chains arising in the context of exact solutions to N=2 SUSY Yang-Mills and their relation to the properties of N=1 SUSY gauge theories. In particular, we discuss their "perturbative" and "solitonic" degenerations and demonstrate some relations of the latter ones to the confining properties of N=1 vacua.
We study half-BPS surface operators in N=2supersymmetric asymptotically conformal gauge theories in four dimensions with SU(N) gauge group and 2N fundamental flavours using localization methods and coupled 2d/4d quiver gauge theories. We show that contours specified by a particular Jeffrey-Kirwan residue prescription in the localization analysis map to particular realizations of the surface operator as flavour defects. Seiberg duality of the 2d/4d quivers is mapped to contour deformations of the localization integral which in this case involves a residue at infinity. This is reflected as a mod…
It is widely believed that the emergent magnetic gauge symmetry of SQCD is analogous to a hidden local symmetry (HLS). We explore this idea in detail, deriving the entire (spontaneously broken) magnetic theory by applying the HLS formalism to spontaneously broken SU(N) SQCD. We deduce the Kähler potential in the HLS description, and show that gauge and flavour symmetry are smoothly restored along certain scaling directions in moduli space. We propose that it is these symmetry restoring directions, associated with the R-symmetry of the theory, that allow full Seiberg duality. Reconsidering the …
We revisit the study of singular points in the Coulomb branch of $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD in four dimensions with gauge group $SU(N)$ and odd number of flavors. For certain choices of the mass parameters these vacua are not lifted by a mass term for the chiral multiplet in the adjoint representation. By using recent results about the M5 brane description of $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories we study the resulting vacua and argue that the low-energy effective theory has a simple Lagrangian description involving a free chiral multiplet in the adjoint representation of the flavor symmetry group, a system some…
We study the Argyres-Douglas theories realized at the superconformal point in the Coulomb moduli space of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric $SU(2)$ QCD with $N_f=1,2,3$ hypermultiplets in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of the Omega-background. The Seiberg-Witten curve of the theory is quantized in this limit and the periods receive the quantum corrections. By applying the WKB method for the quantum Seiberg-Witten curve, we calculate the quantum corrections to the Seiberg-Witten periods around the superconformal point up to the fourth order in the parameter of the Omega background.
This article continues 1205.0410 [hep-th]. Considered is the N=1 SQCD-like theory with SU(N_c) colors and 3N_c/2 <N_F <2N_c flavors of light quarks Q_i,\bar Q_j, and with the additional N^2_F colorless flavored fields Phi_{ij} with the large mass parameter μ_Phi>>Lambda. The mass spectra of this Phi theory (and its dual variant, the dPhi theory) are calculated at different values of μ_Phi/Lambda >>1 within the dynamical scenario which implies that quarks can be in two different phases only: either this is the HQ (heavy quark) phase where they are confined, or they are higgsed at appropriate va…
We study ${\cal N}=2$ SU(2) supersymmetric QCD with massive hypermultiplets deformed in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of the Omega-background. The prepotential of the low-energy effective theory is determined by the WKB solution of the quantum Seiberg-Witten curve. We calculate the deformed Seiberg-Witten periods around the massless monoplole point explicitly up to the fourth order in the deformation parameter.
We interpret the dynamics of Supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) in terms of ideas familiar from the hadronic world. Some mysterious properties of the supersymmetric theory, such as the emergent magnetic gauge symmetry, are shown to have analogs in QCD. On the other hand, several phenomenological concepts, such as "hidden local symmetry" and "vector meson dominance," are shown to be rigorously realized in SQCD. These considerations suggest a relation between the flavor symmetry group and the emergent gauge fields in theories with a weakly coupled dual description.
Considered is the N=1 SQCD-like theory with SU(N_c) colors and 0<N_F<2N_c flavors of light quarks Q_i,\bar Q_j and with the additional N^2_F colorless flavored fields Phi_{ij} with the large mass parameter μ_{Phi}>>Lambda. The mass spectra of this Phi-theory (and its dual variant, the dPhi-theory) are calculated at different values of μ_{Phi}/Lambda >>1 within the dynamical scenario which implies the (quasi)spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. It is shown that, under appropriate conditions, the seemingly heavy and dynamically irrelevant fields Phi 'return back' and there appear two additio…
We revisit N_f=N_c SQCD and its non-supersymmetric minima conjectured by Intriligator, Seiberg and Shih (ISS). We argue that the existence of such minima depends on the signs of three non-calculable parameters and that no evidence can be inferred by deforming the theory. We demonstrate this by studying a deformation of the theory which involves additional gauge singlets. In this case, the conjectured minimum is destabilized. We comment on the consequences of such singlets in models of direct mediation and in particular in the Pentagon model.
The Affleck-Dine-Seiberg instanton generated superpotential for SQCD with Nf=Nc-1 flavours is explicitly derived from a local model of engineered intersecting D6-branes with a single E2-instanton. This computation extends also to symplectic gauge groups with Nf=Nc flavours.
Integrable systems underlying the Seiberg-Witten solutions for the N=2 SQCD with gauge groups SO(n) and Sp(n) are proposed. They are described by the inhomogeneous XXX spin chain with specific boundary conditions given by reflection matrices. We attribute reflection matrices to orientifold planes in the brane construction and briefly discuss its possible deformations.
We study non-supersymmetric minima in N_f=N_c SQCD conjectured by Intriligator, Seiberg and Shih (ISS). We show that the existence of such minima depends on the signs of three non-calculable parameters and that no evidence can be inferred by deforming the theory. We illustrate this by demonstrating that the conjectured minimum is destabilized in a different deformation of N_f=N_c SQCD. We also comment briefly on the phenomenological consequences of this instability.
The instanton-induced effective vertex is derived for N=2 supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) with arbitrary mass matter hypermultiplets for the case of SU(2). The leading term of the low energy effective lagrangian obtained from this vertex agrees with one-instanton effective term of the Seiberg-Witten result.
We consider the holographic dual of SQCD in the conformal phase. It is based on a higher derivative gravity theory, which ensures the correct field theory anomalies. This is then related to a six dimensional gravity theory via S^1 compactification. Some speculations are then made about the correspondence, Seiberg duality, and the nature of confinement from a holographic perspective.
In this note, we give a method to derive the Seiberg duality by the matrix model. The key fact we used is that the effective actions given by matrix model method should be identical for both electric and magnetic theories. We demonstrate our method for SQCD with U(N), SO(N) and Sp(N) gauge groups.
In this note, we consider so-called "Higgs Branch Localization" for four dimensional N=2 field theories on 4d ellipsoid. We find a new set of saddle point equations arising from additional Higgs branch deformation term, whose solutions include both Higgs branch and BPS instanton-vortex mixed configurations. By evaluating the contour integral, we also demonstrate the ellipsoid partition almost factorizes into purely b and 1/b dependent parts, using SQCD as an explicit example. We identify various factorized parts with the ellipsoid partition function of two dimensional N=(2,2) SQCDA, which is p…
We study the spectrum of scalar glueballs in SQCD-like theories whose gravity description is in terms of Nc D5 color branes wrapped on an S^2 inside a CY3-fold, and Nf backreacting D5 flavor branes wrapped on a non-compact two-cycle inside the same CY3-fold. We show that there exists a consistent truncation of the ten-dimensional Type IIB supergravity system to a five-dimensional non-linear sigma model consisting of four scalars coupled to gravity. Studying fluctuations of the scalars as well as the metric around particular backgrounds allows us to compute their spectra. A few different backgr…
In this note we elaborate on the reduction of four dimensional Seiberg duality with adjoint matter to three dimensions. We use the exact formulation of the superconformal index and of the partition function as instruments to test this reduction. We translate the identity between indices of the dual 4d theories to 3d. This produces various new identities between partition functions of 3d dual phases.
We apply the exact WKB analysis to the quantum Seiberg-Witten curve for 4-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2\ SU(2)\ N_f=2$ SQCD with the flavor symmetry. The discontinuity and the asymptotic behavior of the quantum periods define a Riemann-Hilbert problem. We derive the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations as a solution to this problem. We also compute the effective central charge of the underlying CFT, which is shown to be proportional to the one-loop beta function of the SQCD.
Recently we discovered and discussed non-Abelian duality in the quark vacua of N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory with the U(N) gauge group and N_f flavors (N_f>N). Both theories from the dual pair support non-Abelian strings which confine monopoles. Now we introduce an N=2-breaking deformation, a mass term μ{\mathcal A}^2 for the adjoint fields. Starting from a small deformation we eventually make it large which enforces complete decoupling of the adjoint fields. We show that the above non-Abelian duality fully survives in the limit of N=1 SQCD, albeit some technicalities change. For instance, non-A…
Starting from the Seiberg-Witten solution of N=2 SQCD with the U(N) gauge group and N_f quark flavors we construct the so-called μ-dual N=1 theory in the r vacua in the regime analogous to that existing to the left of the left edge of the Seiberg conformal window (here r is the number of condensed quarks). The strong-weak coupling duality is shown to exist in the so-called zero vacua which can be found at r< N_f-N. We show that the μ-dual theory matches the Seiberg dual in the zero vacua.
We propose an electric-magnetic duality and conjecture an exact conformal window for a class of non-supersymmetric U(N_c) gauge theories with fermions in the (anti)symmetric representation of the gauge group and N_f additional scalar and fermion flavors. The duality exchanges N_c with N_f -N_c \mp 4 leaving N_f invariant, and has common features with Seiberg duality in N=1 SQCD with SU or SO/Sp gauge group. At large N the duality holds due to planar equivalence with N=1 SQCD. At finite N we embed these gauge theories in a setup with D-branes and orientifolds in a non-supersymmetric, but tachyo…
In this paper we make further refinements to the duality proposed between N=1 SQCD and certain string (supergravity plus branes) backgrounds, working in the regime of comparable large number of colors and flavors. Using the string theory solutions, we predict different field theory observables and phenomena like Seiberg duality, gauge coupling and its running, the behavior of Wilson and 't Hooft loops, anomalous dimensions of the quark superfields, quartic superpotential coupling and its running, continuous and discrete anomaly matching. We also give evidence for the smooth interpolation betwe…
We construct supergravity plus branes solutions, which we argue to be related to 4d N=1 SQCD with a quartic superpotential. The geometries depend on the ratio Nf/Nc which can be kept of order one, present a good singularity at the origin and are weakly curved elsewhere. We support our field theory interpretation by studying a variety of features like R-symmetry breaking, instantons, Seiberg duality, Wilson loops and pair creation, running of couplings and domain walls. In a second part of this paper, we address a different problem: the analysis of the interesting physics of different members o…
In this paper we revisit the analysis of vacua in N=2 SQCD with generic bare quark masses, softly broken by a mass term for the chiral superfield Φin the adjoint representation of the gauge group. These vacua are labelled by an integer r (r vacua) and can be studied at the semiclassical level by means of the equations of motion (for large mass) or nonperturbatively by means of the Seiberg-Witten curve (for small mass). Making use of the Konishi anomaly and of the Dijkgraaf-Vafa superpotential we are able to interpolate between these two limits and better understand the properties of these vacu…
Chiral rings of two-dimensional (2,2) theories coupled to 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories with matter hypermultiplets are studied. Specifically, the vacua of the twisted superpotential of the 2d theories with vanishing sum of matter charges are computed by considering the resolvent of the bulk theory. The solutions to the chiral ring equations are also obtained from the instanton partition function via Higgsing for simple surface operators and via the orbifold description for full surface operators. These 2d/4d coupled theories are lifted to 3d/5d theories and vacua are found similarly in two diff…
We investigate the Kaluza--Klein (KK) spectrum of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory compactified on a circle. We concentrate on a model with gauge group SU(2) and four massless matter fields in the fundamental representation. We derive the exact mass formula of KK modes by using Seiberg--Witten theory. From the mass formula and the D3-brane probe realization, we determine the spectrum of KK modes of matter fields and gauge fields. As a result, we find that the lightest KK state of gauge fields is stable for all the vacuum moduli space, while the lightest KK state of matter fields decays easier t…
We study new supergravity solutions related to large-$N_c$ ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge field theories with a large number $N_f$ of massive flavors. We use a recently proposed framework based on configurations with $N_c$ color D5 branes and a distribution of $N_f$ flavor D5 branes, governed by a function $N_f S(r)$. Although the system admits many solutions, under plausible physical assumptions the relevant solution is uniquely determined for each value of $x\equiv N_f/N_c$. In the IR region, the solution smoothly approaches the deformed Maldacena-Núñez solution. In the UV region it appro…
We derive the algebraic description of the Coulomb branch of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $USp(2N)$ SQCD theories with $N_f$ fundamental hypermultiplets and determine their low energy physics in any vacuum from the local geometry of the moduli space, identifying the interacting SCFTs which arise at singularities and possible extra free sectors. The SCFT with the largest moduli space arises at the most singular locus on the Coulomb branch. For $N_f>2N$ (good theories) it sits at the origin of the conical variety as expected. For $N_f =2N$ we find two separate most singular points, from which the two isom…
Gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions can admit monopole operators in the potential. Starting with the theory without monopole potential, if the monopole potential is relevant there is an RG flow to the monopole-deformed theory. Here, focusing on U(Nc) SQCD with Nf flavors and N=2 supersymmetry, we show that even when the monopole potential is irrelevant, the monopole-modified theory Tm can exist and enjoy Seiberg-like dualities. We provide a renormalizable UV completion of Tm and an electric-magnetic dual description Tm'. We subject our proposal to various consistency checks such as mass deformati…
We show that applying the Bailey lemma to elliptic hypergeometric integrals on the $A_n$ root system leads to a large web of dualities for $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetric linear quiver theories. The superconformal index of Seiberg's SQCD with $SU(N_c)$ gauge group and $SU(N_f)\times SU(N_f)\times U(1)$ flavour symmetry is equal to that of $N_f-N_c-1$ distinct linear quivers. Seiberg duality further enlarges this web by adding new quivers. In particular, both interacting electric and magnetic theories with arbitrary $N_c$ and $N_f$ can be constructed by quivering an $s$-confining theory with $…
We study the complete moduli space of vacua of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $U(N)$ SQCD theories with $N_f$ fundamentals, building on the algebraic description of the Coulomb branch, and deduce the low energy physics in any vacuum from the local geometry of the moduli space. We confirm previous claims for good and ugly SQCD theories, and show that bad theories flow to the same interacting fixed points as good theories with additional free twisted hypermultiplets. A Seiberg-like duality proposed for bad theories with $N \le N_f \le 2N-2$ is ruled out: the spaces of vacua of the putative dual theories are…
Considered are ${\cal N}=2\, SU(N_c)$ or $U(N_c)$ SQCD with $N_F<2N_c-1$ equal mass quark flavors. ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetry is softly broken down to ${\cal N}=1$ by the mass term $μ_{\rm x}{\rm Tr}\,(X^2)$ of colored adjoint scalar partners of gluons, $μ_{\rm x}\llΛ_2$ ($Λ_2$ is the scale factor of the $SU(N_c)$ gauge coupling). There is a large number of different types of vacua in these theories with both unbroken and spontaneously broken global flavor symmetry, $U(N_F)\rightarrow U({\rm n}_1)\times U({\rm n}_2)$. We consider in this paper the large subset of these vacua with the unbroken …
In this thesis we review the Seiberg-Witten solution of four dimensional N=2 gauge theories, the six-dimensional construction of these models recently proposed by Gaiotto and the BPS quiver technique for the determination of the BPS spectrum of N=2 theories. We then study how these recent developments allow to better understand nonperturbative aspects such as confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking in the N=1 theories obtained starting from N=2 SQCD and adding a mass term for the chiral multiplet in the adjoint of the gauge group. We find an unusual realization of the 't Hooft-Mandelstam m…
We determine the vacuum structure and phases of N=1 theories obtained via a mass μfor the adjoint chiral superfield in N=2, SO(n_c) SQCD. For large number of flavors these theories have two groups of vacua. The first exhibits dynamical breaking of flavor symmetry \USp(2n_f) \to U(n_f) and arises as a relevant deformation of a non-trivial superconformal theory. These are in the confined phase. The second group, in an IR-free phase with unbroken flavor symmetry, is produced from a Coulomb branch singularity with Seiberg's dual gauge symmetry. In the large-μregime both groups of vacua are well-de…
In this note we study the reduction of 4d Seiberg duality to 3d for SP(2N) SQCD with an adjoint field. We follow a general prescription that consists in compactifying the dual 4d theories on the circle. This generates an effective 3d duality. The pure 3d duality is obtained by combining the zero radius limit with a real mass flow. Here we perform this limit by a double scaling procedure: we turn on real masses proportional to the radius before shrinking the circle. We apply this mechanism to the reduction of the 4d superconformal index to the three sphere partition function. While the reductio…
Twisted supersymmetric theories on a product of two Riemann surfaces possess non-local holomorphic currents in a BRST cohomology. The holomorphic currents act as vector fields on the chiral ring. The OPE's of these currents are invariant under the renormalization group flow up to BRST-exact terms. In the context of electric-magnetic duality, the algebra generated by the holomorphic currents in the electric theory is isomorphic to the one on the magnetic side. For the currents corresponding to global symmetries this isomorphism follows from 't Hooft anomaly matching conditions. The isomorphism …
We study D-branes in the superstring background R^{3,1} \times SL(2,R)_{k=1}/U(1) which are extended in the cigar direction. Some of these branes are new. The branes realize flavor in the four dimensional N=1 gauge theories on the D-branes localized at the tip of the cigar. We study the analytic properties of the boundary conformal field theories on these branes with respect to their defining parameter and find non-trivial monodromies in this parameter. Through this approach, we gain a better understanding of the brane set-ups in ten dimensions involving wrapped NS5-branes. As one application,…
The results of Romelsberger for a N=1 superconformal index counting protected operators, satisfying a BPS condition and which cannot be combined to form long multiplets, are analysed further. The index is expressible in terms of single particle superconformal characters for N=1 scalar and vector multiplets. For SQCD, involving SU(N_c) gauge groups and appropriate numbers of flavours N_f, the formula used to construct the index may be proved to give identical results for theories linked by Seiberg duality using recently proved theorems for q-series elliptic hypergeometric integrals. The discuss…
We present a new duality between the F-terms of supersymmetric field theories defined in two- and four-dimensions respectively. The duality relates N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions, deformed by an Omega-background in one plane, to N=(2,2) gauged linear sigma-models in two dimensions. On the four dimensional side, our main example is N=2 SQCD with gauge group SU(L) and 2L fundamental flavours. Using ideas of Nekrasov and Shatashvili, we argue that the Coulomb branch of this theory provides a quantization of the classical Heisenberg SL(2) spin chain. Agreement with the standa…
