The results of Romelsberger for a N=1 superconformal index counting protected operators, satisfying a BPS condition and which cannot be combined to form long multiplets, are analysed further. The index is expressible in terms of single particle superconformal characters for N=1 scalar and vector multiplets. For SQCD, involving SU(N_c) gauge groups and appropriate numbers of flavours N_f, the formula used to construct the index may be proved to give identical results for theories linked by Seiberg duality using recently proved theorems for q-series elliptic hypergeometric integrals. The discussion is also extended to Kutasov-Schwimmer dual theories in the large N_c, N_f limit and to dual theories with Sp(N) and SO(N) gauge groups. For the former, a transformation identity for elliptic hypergeometric integrals directly verifies that the index is the same for the electric and magnetic theories. For SO(N) theories the corresponding result may also be obtained from the same basic identity. An expansion of the index to several orders is also obtained in a form where the detailed protected operator content may be read off. Relevant mathematical results are reviewed.
An exact formula for partition functions in 3d field theories was recently suggested by Jafferis, and Hama, Hosomichi, and Lee. These functions are expressed in terms of specific $q$-hypergeometric integrals whose key building block is the double sine function (or the hyperbolic gamma function). Elliptic hypergeometric integrals, discovered by the second author, define 4d superconformal indices. Using their reduction to the hyperbolic level, we describe a general scheme of reducing 4d superconformal indices to 3d partition functions which imply an efficient way of getting 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ su…
Elliptic hypergeometric integrals describe superconformal indices of 4d supersymmetric field theories. We show that all 't Hooft anomaly matching conditions for Seiberg dual theories can be derived from $SL(3,\mathbb{Z})$-modular transformation properties of the kernels of dual indices.
The superconformal index of a three-dimensional supersymmetric field theory can be expressed in terms of basic hypergeometric integrals. By comparing the indices of dual theories, one can find new integral identities for basic hypergeometric integrals. Some of these integral identities have the form of the pentagon identity which can be interpreted as the 2-3 Pachner move for triangulated 3-manifolds.
Following a recent work of Dolan and Osborn, we consider superconformal indices of four dimensional ${\mathcal N}=1$ supersymmetric field theories related by an electric-magnetic duality with the SP(2N) gauge group and fixed rank flavour groups. For the SP(2) (or SU(2)) case with 8 flavours, the electric theory has index described by an elliptic analogue of the Gauss hypergeometric function constructed earlier by the first author. Using the $E_7$-root system Weyl group transformations for this function, we build a number of dual magnetic theories. One of them was originally discovered by Seibe…
We derive superconformal partial waves for all scalar four-point functions on a super Grassmannian space Gr(m|n,2m|2n) for all m,n. This family of four-point functions includes those of all (arbitrary weight) half BPS operators in both N=4 SYM (m=n=2) and in N=2 superconformal field theories in four dimensions (m=2,n=1) on analytic superspace. It also includes four-point functions of all (arbitrary dimension) scalar fields in non-supersymmetric conformal field theories (m=2,n=0) on Minkowski space, as well as those of a certain class of representations of the compact SU(2n) coset spaces. As an…
We initiate the bootstrap program for $\mathcal{N}=3$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) in four dimensions. The problem is considered from two fronts: the protected subsector described by a $2d$ chiral algebra, and crossing symmetry for half-BPS operators whose superconformal primaries parametrize the Coulomb branch of $\mathcal{N}=3$ theories. With the goal of describing a protected subsector of a family of $\mathcal{N}=3$ SCFTs, we propose a new $2d$ chiral algebra with super Virasoro symmetry that depends on an arbitrary parameter, identified with the central charge of the theory. Turni…
We show how to treat the superconformal algebras with eight Poincaré supercharges in a unified manner for spacetime dimension $2 < d\leq 6$. This formalism is ideally suited for analyzing the quadratic Casimir operator of the superconformal algebra and its use in deriving superconformal blocks. We illustrate this by an explicit construction of the superconformal blocks, for any value of the spacetime dimension, for external protected scalar operators which are the lowest component of flavor current multiplets.
We report on tests of the AdS/CFT correspondence that are made possible by complete knowledge of the Kaluza-Klein mass spectrum of type IIB supergravity on $AdS_5 \times T^{11}$ with T^{11}=SU(2)^2/U(1). After briefly discussing general multiplet shortening conditions in SU(2,2|1) and PSU(2,2|4), we compare various types of short SU(2,2|1) supermultiplets on AdS_5 and different families of boundary operators with protected dimensions. The supergravity analysis predicts the occurrence in the SCFT at leading order in N and g_s N, of extra towers of long multiplets whose dimensions are rational b…
Any four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} \geqslant 2$ superconformal field theory possess a protected subsector isomorphic to a two-dimensional chiral algebra \cite{Beem:2013sza}. The goal of these lectures is to provide an introduction to the subject, covering the construction of the chiral algebras, the consequences for four-dimensional physics, as well as a brief summary of recent progress. This is the writeup of the lectures given at the Winter School "YRISW 2020" to appear in a special issue of JPhysA.
The UV fixed point theory of SU(2) gauge theory with N_f = 0,1,...,7 flavors is believed to have the enlarged E_{N_f +1} flavor symmetry. Actually it is not easy to check this conjecture because the UV theory is strongly-coupled, however, computation of certain SUSY protected quantities provides strong evidence for the enhancement of flavor symmetry. We study the superconformal index for SU(2) gauge theory with N_f = 0, 1 flavors in details, and we give a support for the enhancement by studying combinatorial structure of the superconformal indexes of these theories. We also give a nontrivial e…
It is known that the two- and three-point functions of Higgs-branch superconformal primaries in 4d N=2 superconformal field theories obey non-renormalization theorems on N=2 superconformal manifolds. In this paper we prove a stronger statement, that the bundles of Higgs-branch superconformal primaries over N=2 superconformal manifolds are endowed with a flat connection, or equivalently that Higgs-branch superconformal primaries have vanishing Berry phases under N=2 exactly marginal deformations. This statement fits well with the proposed correspondence between the rigid structures of 2d chiral…

One of the predictions of the AdS/CFT correspondence is the matching of protected operators between a superconformal field theory and its holographic dual. We review the spectrum of protected operators in quiver gauge theories that flow to superconformal field theories at low energies. The spectrum is determined by the cyclic homology of an algebra associated to the quiver gauge theory. Identifying the spectrum of operators with cyclic homology allows us to apply the Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg theorem to relate the cyclic homology groups to deRham cohomology groups. The map from cyclic homol…
We analyse the OPE of any two 1/2 BPS operators of (2,0) SCFT$_6$ by constructing all possible three-point functions that they can form with another, in general long operator. Such three-point functions are uniquely determined by superconformal symmetry. Selection rules are derived, which allow us to infer ``non-renormalization theorems'' for an abstract superconformal field theory. The latter is supposedly related to the strong-coupling dynamics of $N_c$ coincident M5 branes, dual, in the large-$N_c$ limit, to the bulk M-theory compactified on AdS$_7 \times$S$_4$. An interpretation of extrema…
We study operator insertions into 1/2 BPS Wilson loops in N = 6 ABJM theory and investigate their two-point correlators. In this framework, the energy emitted by a heavy moving probe can be exactly obtained from some two-point coefficients of bosonic and fermionic insertions. This allows us to confirm an early proposal for computing the Bremsstrahlung function in terms of certain supersymmetric circular Wilson loops, whose value might be accessible to localization techniques. In the derivation of this result we also elucidate the structure of protected multiplets in the relevant superconformal…
Superconformal indices (SCIs) of 4d ${\mathcal N}=4$ SYM theories with simple gauge groups are described in terms of elliptic hypergeometric integrals. For $F_4, E_6, E_7, E_8$ gauge groups this yields first examples of integrals of such type. S-duality transformation for G_2 and F_4 SCIs is equivalent to a change of integration variables. Equality of SCIs for SP(2N) and SO(2N+1) group theories is proved in several important special cases. Reduction of SCIs to partition functions of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYM theories with one matter field in the adjoint representation is investigated, correspondi…
Despite the power of supersymmetry, finding exact closed-form expressions for the protected operator spectra of interacting superconformal field theories (SCFTs) is difficult. In this paper, we take a step towards a solution for the "simplest" interacting 4D $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT: the minimal Argyres-Douglas (MAD) theory. We present two results that go beyond the well-understood Coulomb branch and Schur sectors. First, we find the exact closed-form spectrum of multiplets containing operators that are chiral with respect to any $\mathcal{N}=1\subset\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal subalgebra. We ar…
Superconformal Ward identities are derived for the the four point functions of chiral primary BPS operators for $\N=2,4$ superconformal symmetry in four dimensions. Manipulations of arbitrary tensorial fields are simplified by introducing a null vector so that the four point functions depend on two internal $R$-symmetry invariants as well as two conformal invariants. The solutions of these identities are interpreted in terms of the operator product expansion and are shown to accommodate long supermultiplets with free scale dimensions and also short and semi-short multiplets with protected dime…
A connection between the gauge fixed dynamics of protected operators in superconformal Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions and Calogero systems is established. This connection generalizes the free Fermion description of the chiral primary operators of the gauge theory formed out of a single complex scalar to more general operators. In particular, a detailed analysis of protected operators charged under an su(1|1)contained in psu(2,2|4) is carried out and a class of operators is identified, whose dynamics is described by the rational super-Calogero model. These results are generalized to arbit…
We give a general analysis of OPEs of 1/2 BPS superfield operators for the $D=3,4,5,6$ superconformal algebras OSp(8/4,R), PSU(2,2), F${}_4$ and OSp($8^*/4$) which underlie maximal AdS supergravity in $4\leq D+1\leq 7$. \\ The corresponding three-point functions can be formally factorized in a way similar to the decomposition of a generic superconformal UIR into a product of supersingletons. This allows for a simple derivation of branching rules for primary superfields. The operators of protected conformal dimension which may appear in the OPE are classified and are shown to be either 1/2 or 1…
We present a trace formula for a Witten type Index for superconformal field theories in d=3,5 and 6 dimensions, generalizing a similar recent construction in d=4. We perform a detailed study of the decomposition of long representations into sums of short representations at the unitarity bound to demonstrate that our trace formula yields the most general index (i.e. quantity that is guaranteed to be protected by superconformal symmetry alone) for the corresponding superalgebras. Using the dual gravitational description, we compute our index for the theory on the world volume of N M2 and M5 bran…
We attack the long-standing problem of finding the AdS dual of N = 2 superconformal QCD, the N=2 super Yang Mills theory with gauge group SU(N_c) and N_f = 2 N_c fundamental hyper multiplets. The theory admits a Veneziano expansion of large N_c and large N_f, with N_f/N_c and lambda = g^2 N_c kept fixed. The topological structure of large N diagrams motivates a general conjecture: the flavor-singlet sector of a gauge theory in the Veneziano limit is dual to a closed string theory; single closed string states correspond to "generalized single-trace" operators, where adjoint letters and flavor-c…
Possible short and semi-short representations for $\N=2$ and $\N=4$ superconformal symmetry in four dimensions are discussed. For $\N=4$ the well known short supermultiplets whose lowest dimension conformal primary operators correspond to $\half$-BPS or ${1\over 4}$-BPS states and are scalar fields belonging to the $SU(4)_r$ symmetry representations $[0,p,0]$ and $[q,p,q]$ and having scale dimension $Δ=p$ and $Δ= 2q+p$ respectively are recovered. The representation content of semi-short multiplets, which arise at the unitarity threshold for long multiplets, is discussed. It is shown how, at th…
Character formulae for positive energy unitary representations of the N=4 superconformal group are obtained through use of reduced Verma modules and Weyl group symmetry. Expansions of these are given which determine the particular representations present and results such as dimensions of superconformal multiplets. By restriction of variables various `blind' characters are also obtained. Limits, corresponding to reduction to particular subgroups, in the characters isolate contributions from particular subsets of multiplets and in many cases simplify the results considerably. As a special case, …
We introduce the analytic superspace formalism for six-dimensional $(N,0)$ superconformal field theories. Concentrating on the $(2,0)$ theory we write down the Ward identities for correlation functions in the theory and show how to solve them. We then consider the four-point function of four energy momentum multiplets in detail, explicitly solving the Ward identities in this case. We expand the four-point function using both Schur polynomials, which lead to a simple formula in terms of a single function of two variables, and (a supersymmetric generalisation of) Jack polynomials, which allow a …
Possible short and semi-short positive energy, unitary representations of the Osp(2N|4) superconformal group in three dimensions are discussed. Corresponding character formulae are obtained, consistent with character formulae for the SO(3,2) conformal group, revealing long multiplet decomposition at unitarity bounds in a simple way. Limits, corresponding to reduction to various Osp(2N|4) subalgebras, are taken in the characters that isolate contributions from fewer states, at a given unitarity threshold, leading to considerably simpler formulae. Via these limits, applied to partition functions…
We apply recently developed tools from exceptional field theory to calculate the full Kaluza-Klein spectrum of the AdS$_5$ Pilch-Warner solution of type IIB supergravity. Through the AdS/CFT correspondence this yields detailed information about the spectrum of protected and unprotected operators of the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ Leigh-Strassler SCFT, in the planar limit. We also calculate explicitly the superconformal index of the SCFT in this limit and show that it agrees precisely with the spectrum of protected operators in the supergravity calculation.
We study the superconformal index for the class of N=2 4d superconformal field theories recently introduced by Gaiotto. These theories are defined by compactifying the (2,0) 6d theory on a Riemann surface with punctures. We interpret the index of the 4d theory associated to an n-punctured Riemann surface as the n-point correlation function of a 2d topological QFT living on the surface. Invariance of the index under generalized S-duality transformations (the mapping class group of the Riemann surface) translates into associativity of the operator algebra of the 2d TQFT. In the A_1 case, for whi…
We introduce several new identities combining basic hypergeometric sums and integrals. Such identities appear in the context of superconformal index computations for three-dimensional supersymmetric dual theories. We give both analytic proofs and physical interpretations of the presented identities.
In this paper we discuss candidate superconformal N=2 gauge theories that realize the AdS/CFT correspondence with M--theory compactified on the homogeneous Sasakian 7-manifolds M^7 that were classified long ago. In particular we focus on the two cases M^7=Q^{1,1,1} and M^7=M^{1,1,1}, for the latter the Kaluza Klein spectrum being completely known. We show how the toric description of M^7 suggests the gauge group and the supersingleton fields. The conformal dimensions of the latter can be independently calculated by comparison with the mass of baryonic operators that correspond to 5-branes wrap…
We study multipoint correlators of protected scalars on the Maldacena-Wilson line in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. Working at weak coupling in the planar limit, we derive an explicit recursion relation that captures next-to-leading order correlators with an arbitrary number of insertions of the fundamental scalar field. By pinching fundamental scalars together, we can build composite protected operators with higher values of the R-charge. Our result then encompasses arbitrary $n$-point correlators of protected operators with arbitrary weight. As a demonstration of our method, we give explicit formulae …
The superconformal index of a typical Lagrangian 4d SCFT is given by a special function known as an elliptic hypergeometric integral (EHI). The high-temperature limit of the index corresponds to the hyperbolic limit of the EHI. The hyperbolic limit of certain special EHIs has been analyzed by Eric Rains around 2006; extending Rains's techniques, we discover a surprisingly rich structure in the high-temperature limit of a (rather large) class of EHIs that arise as the superconformal index of unitary Lagrangian 4d SCFTs with non-chiral matter content. Our result has implications for $\mathcal{N}…
In the context of the superconformal N=4 SYM theory the Konishi anomaly can be viewed as the descendant $K_{10}$ of the Konishi multiplet in the 10 of SU(4), carrying the anomalous dimension of the multiplet. Another descendant $O_{10}$ with the same quantum numbers, but this time without anomalous dimension, is obtained from the protected half-BPS operator $O_{20'}$ (the stress-tensor multiplet). Both $K_{10}$ and $O_{10}$ are renormalized mixtures of the same two bare operators, one trilinear (coming from the superpotential), the other bilinear (the so-called "quantum Konishi anomaly"). Only…
The N = 2, 4 superconformal symmetry constraints in d = 4 for four point functions of chiral primary 1/2-BPS operators are derived. The operators are described by symmetric traceless tensors of the internal R-symmetry group. A substantial simplification is achieved by introduction of null vectors. Two variable polynomials corresponding to different R-symmetry representations are constructed. The Ward identities for superconformal symmetry are obtained as simple differential equations. The general solution is presented in terms of a constant, a single variable function and a two variable functi…
We study numerically the 6D (2,0) superconformal bootstrap using the soft-Actor-Critic (SAC) algorithm as a stochastic optimizer. We focus on the four-point functions of scalar superconformal primaries in the energy-momentum multiplet. Starting from the supergravity limit, we perform searches for adiabatically varied central charges and derive two curves for a collection of 80 CFT data (70 of these data correspond to unprotected long multiplets and 10 to protected short multiplets). We conjecture that the two curves capture the A- and D-series (2,0) theories. Our results are competitive when c…
We examine the behavior of the Ramond ground states in the D1-D5 CFT after a deformation of the free-orbifold sigma model on target space $({\mathbb T}^4)^N / S_N$ by a marginal interaction operator. These states are compositions of Ramond ground states of the twisted and untwisted sectors. They are characterized by a conjugacy class of $S_N$ and by the set of their "spins", including both R-charge and "internal" SU(2) charge. We compute the four-point functions of an arbitrary Ramond ground state with its conjugate and two interaction operators, for genus-zero covering surfaces representing t…
We investigate the structure of certain protected operator algebras that arise in three-dimensional N=4 superconformal field theories. We find that these algebras can be understood as a quantization of (either of) the half-BPS chiral ring(s). An important feature of this quantization is that it has a preferred basis in which the structure constants of the quantum algebra are equal to the OPE coefficients of the underlying superconformal theory. We identify several nontrivial conditions that the quantum algebra must satisfy in this basis. We consider examples of theories for which the moduli sp…
We discuss the perturbative behavior of the 1/2 BPS operators in N=2 SCFT on the example of two very similar quadrilinear composite operators made out of hypermultiplets. An explicit one-loop computation shows that one of them is protected while the other acquires an anomalous dimension. Although both operators are superconformal primaries in the free case, the quantum corrections make the latter become a 1/2 BPS descendant of the Konishi multiplet, while the former remains primary. The comparative study of these two operators at higher orders may be helpful in understanding the quantum proper…
Superconformal field theories (SCFT) are known to possess solvable yet nontrivial sectors in their full operator algebras. Two prime examples are the chiral algebra sector on a two dimensional plane in four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs, and the topological quantum mechanics (TQM) sector on a line in three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ SCFTs. Under Weyl transformation, they respectively map to operator algebras on a great torus in $S^1\times S^3$ and a great circle in $S^3$, and are naturally related by reduction along the $S^1$ factor, which amounts to taking the Cardy (high-temperature) li…
Surface operators in the 6d (2,0) theory at large $N$ have a holographic description in terms of M2 branes probing the AdS$_7 \times S^4$ M-theory background. The most symmetric, 1/2-BPS, operator is defined over a planar or spherical surface, and it preserves a 2d superconformal group. This includes, in particular, an $SO(2,2)$ subgroup of 2d conformal transformations, so that the surface operator may be viewed as a conformal defect in the 6d theory. The dual M2 brane has an AdS$_3$ induced geometry, reflecting the 2d conformal symmetry. Here we use the holographic description to extract the …

Every four-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal field theory comes equipped with an intricate algebraic invariant, the associated vertex operator algebra. The relationships between this invariant and more conventional protected quantities in the same theories have yet to be completely understood. In this work, we aim to characterize the connection between the Higgs branch of the moduli space of vacua (as an algebraic geometric entity) and the associated vertex operator algebra. Ultimately our proposal is simple, but its correctness requires the existence of a number of nontrivial null vecto…
We present a trace formula for an index over the spectrum of four dimensional superconformal field theories on $S^3 \times $ time. Our index receives contributions from states invariant under at least one supercharge and captures all information -- that may be obtained purely from group theory -- about protected short representations in 4 dimensional superconformal field theories. In the case of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ theory our index is a function of four continuous variables. We compute it at weak coupling using gauge theory and at strong coupling by summing over the spectrum of free massless p…
We introduce a new numerical algorithm based on semidefinite programming to efficiently compute bounds on operator dimensions, central charges, and OPE coefficients in 4D conformal and N=1 superconformal field theories. Using our algorithm, we dramatically improve previous bounds on a number of CFT quantities, particularly for theories with global symmetries. In the case of SO(4) or SU(2) symmetry, our bounds severely constrain models of conformal technicolor. In N=1 superconformal theories, we place strong bounds on dim(Phi*Phi), where Phi is a chiral operator. These bounds asymptote to the l…
We consider a class of 6D superconformal field theories (SCFTs) which have a large $N$ limit and a semi-classical gravity dual description. Using the quiver-like structure of 6D SCFTs we study a subsector of operators protected from large operator mixing. These operators are characterized by degrees of freedom in a one-dimensional spin chain, and the associated states are generically highly entangled. This provides a concrete realization of qubit-like states in a strongly coupled quantum field theory. Renormalization group flows triggered by deformations of 6D UV fixed points translate to spec…
