We consider a class of 6D superconformal field theories (SCFTs) which have a large $N$ limit and a semi-classical gravity dual description. Using the quiver-like structure of 6D SCFTs we study a subsector of operators protected from large operator mixing. These operators are characterized by degrees of freedom in a one-dimensional spin chain, and the associated states are generically highly entangled. This provides a concrete realization of qubit-like states in a strongly coupled quantum field theory. Renormalization group flows triggered by deformations of 6D UV fixed points translate to specific deformations of these one-dimensional spin chains. We also present a conjectural spin chain Hamiltonian which tracks the evolution of these states as a function of renormalization group flow, and study qubit manipulation in this setting. Similar considerations hold for theories without $AdS$ duals, such as 6D little string theories and 4D SCFTs obtained from compactification of the partial tensor branch theory on a $T^2$.
We study $5d$ gauge theories that go in the UV to $6d$ $\mathcal{N}$$=(1,0)$ SCFT. We focus on these theories that can be engineered in string theory by brane webs. Given a theory in this class, we propose a method to determine the $6d$ SCFT it goes to. We also discuss the implication of this to the compactification of the resulting $6d$ SCFT on a torus to $4d$. We test and demonstrate this method with a variety of examples.
We describe an infinite two-parameter subfamily of theories of class S where dialing one of the parameters interpolates between Gaiotto's T_N theory and a theory of N^2 free hypermultiplets. After using the reduced superconformal index to study the operator content, we use these theories to construct new N=1 SCFTs and then examine the flows between them.
We review the unitarity bounds and the multiplet shortening of UIR's of 4 dimensional superconformal algebras $SU(2,2|N)$, ($N=1,2,4$) in view of their dual role in the AdS/SCFT correspondence. Some applications to KK spectra, non-perturbative states and stringy states are given.
We study the $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories resulting from the compactification of a family of $5d$ SCFTs on a torus with flux in the global symmetry. The family of $5d$ SCFTs used in the analysis is the one that UV completes the $5d$ $SU(N+1)$ gauge theories with Chern--Simons level $k$ and $N_f$ fundamental hypermultiplets, generalizing the previous investigation of the torus compactifications of the rank 1 Seiberg $E_{N_f+1}$ SCFT (which is the $N=1$ member of the family). This construction systematically yields three-dimensional theories presenting highly non-trivial non-perturbative phenom…
In this paper we begin mapping out the space of rank-2 $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) in four dimensions. This represents an ideal set of theories which can be potentially classified using purely quantum field-theoretic tools, thus providing a precious case study to probe the completeness of the current understanding of SCFTs, primarily derived from string theory constructions. Here, we collect and systematize a large amount of field theoretic data characterizing each theory. We also provide a detailed description of each case and determine the theories' Coulomb, Higgs a…
We study 6d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) compactified on a circle with arbitrary twists. The theories obtained after compactification, often referred to as 5d Kaluza-Klein (KK) theories, can be viewed as starting points for RG flows to 5d SCFTs. According to a conjecture, all 5d SCFTs can be obtained in this fashion. We compute the Coulomb branch prepotential for all 5d KK theories obtainable in this manner and associate to these theories a smooth local genus one fibered Calabi-Yau threefold in which is encoded information about all possible RG flows to 5d SCFTs. These Calabi-Yau thre…
Detailed studies of four dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories (SCFT) defined by isolated complete intersection singularities are performed: we compute the Coulomb branch spectrum, Seiberg-Witten solutions and central charges. Most of our theories have exactly marginal deformations and we identify the weakly coupled gauge theory descriptions for many of them, which involve (affine) D and E shaped quiver gauge theories and theories formed from Argyres-Douglas matters. These investigations provide strong evidence for the singularity approach in classifying 4d N=2 SCFTs.
One can derive a large class of new $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs by turning on $\mathcal{N}=1$ preserving deformations for $\mathcal{N}=2$ Argyres-Dougals theories. In this work, we use $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal indices to get indices of $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs, then use these indices to derive chiral rings of $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs. For a large class of $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories, we find that the IR theory contains only free chirals if we deform the parent $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory using the Coulomb branch operator with smallest scaling dimension. Our results provide interesting lessons on studies of …
Starting from 6D superconformal field theories (SCFTs) realized via F-theory, we show how reduction on a circle leads to a uniform perspective on the phase structure of the resulting 5D theories, and their possible conformal fixed points. Using the correspondence between F-theory reduced on a circle and M-theory on the corresponding elliptically fibered Calabi--Yau threefold, we show that each 6D SCFT with minimal supersymmetry directly reduces to a collection of between one and four 5D SCFTs. Additionally, we find that in most cases, reduction of the tensor branch of a 6D SCFT yields a 5D gen…
We study a class of N=1 quiver gauge theories build out of vector multiplets and matter multiplets in the fundamental and bifundamental representations. We argue that these theories flow to interacting SCFTs in the IR and calculate their central charges. We exhibit a type IIA brane construction which at low energies is described by these SCFTs. This also leads to a natural description of the theories in terms of M5-branes on a punctured sphere.
Compactifying 6d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) to 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories on two-punctured spheres (tubes) and tori with flux is realized using duality domain walls in 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ Kaluza-Klein (KK) theories, which are usually denoted by $flux$ $domain$ $walls$. We revisit this construction and study it in detail from the 5d perspective, specifically rephrasing it using the box graph description of the extended Coulomb branch phases of 5d theories. This perspective could be helpful in understanding how to equivalently realize the 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ models from geometric engin…
Gauge-theoretic anomaly cancellation predicts the existence of many 6d SCFTs and little string theories (LSTs) that have not been given a string theory construction so far. In this paper, we provide an explicit construction of all such "missing" 6d SCFTs and LSTs by using the frozen phase of F-theory. We conjecture that the full set of 6d SCFTs and LSTs is obtained by combining the set of theories constructed in this paper with the set of theories that have been constructed in earlier literature using the unfrozen phase of F-theory. Along the way, we demonstrate that there exist SCFTs that do …
We determine all 5d SCFTs upto rank three by studying RG flows of 5d KK theories. Our analysis reveals the existence of new rank one and rank two 5d SCFTs not captured by previous classifications. In addition to that, we provide for the first time a systematic and conjecturally complete classification of rank three 5d SCFTs. Our methods are based on a recently studied geometric description of 5d KK theories, thus demonstrating the utility of these geometric descriptions. It is straightforward, though computationally intensive, to extend this work and systematically classify 5d SCFTs of higher …
We propose a graph-based approach to 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) based on their realization as M-theory compactifications on singular elliptic Calabi--Yau threefolds. Field-theoretically, these 5d SCFTs descend from 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs by circle compactification and mass deformations. We derive a description of these theories in terms of graphs, so-called Combined Fiber Diagrams, which encode salient features of the partially resolved Calabi--Yau geometry, and provides a combinatorial way of characterizing all 5d SCFTs that descend from a given 6d theory. Remarkably, thes…
A large class of 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) can be constructed by integrating out BPS particles from 6d SCFTs compactified on a circle. We describe a general method for extracting the flavor symmetry of any 5d SCFT lying in this class. For this purpose, we utilize the geometric engineering of 5d N=1 theories in M-theory, where the flavor symmetry is encoded in a collection of non-compact surfaces.
We systematically analyse 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) obtained by dimensional reduction from 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs. Such theories have a realization as M-theory on a singular Calabi-Yau threefold, from which we determine the so-called combined fiber diagrams (CFD) introduced in arXiv:1906.11820, arXiv:1907.05404, arXiv:1909.09128. The CFDs are graphs that encode the superconformal flavor symmetry, BPS states, low energy descriptions, as well as descendants upon flavor matter decoupling. To obtain a 5d SCFT from 6d, there are two approaches: the first is to consider a circle…
We show that a proposed duality [arXiv:0711.0054] between infinitely coupled gauge theories and superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with weakly gauged flavor groups predicts the existence of new rank 1 SCFTs. These superconformal fixed point theories have the same Coulomb branch singularities as the rank 1 E_6, E_7, and E_8 SCFTs, but have smaller flavor symmetry algebras and different central charges. Gauging various subalgebras of the flavor algebras of these rank 1 SCFTs provides many examples of infinite-coupling dualities, satisfying an intricate set of consistency checks. They also pro…
We study certain N=1 preserving deformations of four-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with non-abelian flavor symmetry. The deformation is described by adding an N=1 chiral multiplet transforming in the adjoint representation of the flavor symmetry with a superpotential coupling, and giving a nilpotent vacuum expectation value to the chiral multiplet which breaks the flavor symmetry. This triggers a renormalization group flow to an infrared SCFT. Remarkably, we find classes of theories flow to enhanced N=2 supersymmetric fixed points in the infrared under the deformation. …
We study a rich set of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with both central charges identical: $a = c$. We construct them via the diagonal $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauging of the flavor symmetry $G$ of a collection of $\mathcal{N}=2$ Argyres--Douglas theories of type $\mathcal{D}_p(G)$, with or without additional adjoint chiral multiplets. In this way, we construct infinitely-many theories that flow to interacting SCFTs with $a = c$ in the infrared. Finally, we briefly highlight the features of the SCFTs without $a = c$ that arise from generalizing this construction.
In arXiv:1906.11820 and arXiv:1907.05404 we proposed an approach based on graphs to characterize 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs), which arise as compactifications of 6d $\mathcal{N}= (1,0)$ SCFTs. The graphs, so-called combined fiber diagrams (CFDs), are derived using the realization of 5d SCFTs via M-theory on a non-compact Calabi--Yau threefold with a canonical singularity. In this paper we complement this geometric approach by connecting the CFD of an SCFT to its weakly coupled gauge theory or quiver descriptions and demonstrate that the CFD as recovered from the gauge theory appro…
Making use of the exact solutions of the $N=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories we construct new classes of superconformal field theories (SCFTs) by fine-tuning the moduli parameters and bringing the theories to critical points. SCFTs we have constructed represent universality classes of the 4-dimensional $N=2$ SCFTs.
We study a rich set of four-dimensional superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with both central charges identical: $a = c$. These are constructed via the diagonal $\mathcal{N}=2$ or $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauging of the flavor symmetry $G$ of a collection of $\mathcal{N}=2$ Argyres-Douglas theories of type $\mathcal{D}_p(G)$, with or without adjoint chiral multiplets, in arXiv:2106.12579 and arXiv:2111.12092. We compute superconformal indices of some theories where the rank of $G$ is low, performing a refined test for unitarity, and further determine the relevant and marginal operator content in deta…
Superconformal field theories (SCFTs) occupy a central role in the study of many aspects of quantum field theory. In this white paper for the Snowmass process we give a brief overview of aspects of SCFTs in $3\leq D \leq 6$ space-time dimensions, including classification efforts and some of the vast current research trends on the physical and mathematical structures generated by this rich class of physical theories.
We study the compactification of 5d SCFTs to 4d on a circle with a twist in a discrete global symmetry element of these SCFTs. We present evidence that this leads to various 4d N=2 isolated SCFTs. These include many known theories as well as seemingly new ones. The known theories include the recently discovered rank 1 SU(4) SCFT and its mass deformations. One application of the new SCFTs is in the dual descriptions of the 4d gauge theory SU(N)+1S+(N-2)F. Also interesting is the appearance of a theory with rank 1 and $F_4$ global symmetry.
Exact results are derived for 5d SCFTs with holographic duals in Type IIB supergravity. These theories have relevant deformations that flow to linear quiver gauge theories, with the number of nodes large in the large-$N$ limits described by supergravity. Starting from a suitable formulation of the matrix models resulting from supersymmetric localization of the squashed $S^5$ partition functions, the saddle point equations are solved for generic quivers with $N_f=2N$ at all interior nodes, which includes the $T_N$ theories, and for a sample of theories with $N_f\neq 2N$ nodes including theories…
Turning on N=2 supersymmetry-preserving relevant operators in a 4-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theory (SCFT) corresponds to a complex deformation compatible with the rigid special Kahler geometry encoded in the low energy effective action. Field theoretic consistency arguments indicate that there should be many distinct such relevant deformations of each SCFT fixed point. Some new supersymmetry-preserving complex deformations are constructed of isolated rank 1 SCFTs. We also make predictions for the dimensions of certain Higgs branches for some rank 1 SCFTs.
We study (1,0) and (2,0) 6D superconformal field theories (SCFTs) that can be constructed in F-theory. Quite surprisingly, all of them involve an orbifold singularity C^2 / G with G a discrete subgroup of U(2). When G is a subgroup of SU(2), all discrete subgroups are allowed, and this leads to the familiar ADE classification of (2,0) SCFTs. For more general U(2) subgroups, the allowed possibilities for G are not arbitrary and are given by certain generalizations of the A- and D-series. These theories should be viewed as the minimal 6D SCFTs. We obtain all other SCFTs by bringing in a number o…
We study general properties of the mapping between 5$d$ and 4$d$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) under both twisted circle compactification and tuning of local relevant deformation and CB moduli. After elucidating in generality when a 5$d$ SCFT reduces to a 4$d$ one, we identify nearly all $\mathcal{N}=1$ 5$d$ SCFT parents of rank-2 4$d$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs. We then use this result to map out the mass deformation trajectories among the rank-2 theories in 4$d$. This can be done by first understanding the mass deformations of the 5$d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs and then map them to 4$d$. The …
We continue to investigate the $\mathcal{N}=1$ deformations of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) labeled by a nilpotent element of the flavor symmetry. This triggers a renormalization group (RG) flow to an $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFT. We systematically analyze all possible deformations of this type for certain classes of $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs: conformal SQCDs, generalized Argyres-Douglas theories and the $E_6$ SCFT. We find a number of examples where the amount of supersymmetry gets enhanced to $\mathcal{N}=2$ at the end point of the RG flow. Most notably, we find…
We study compactifications of an infinite family of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs on a Riemann surface in the presence of arbitrary background fluxes for global symmetries. The four-dimensional parent theories have holographic Sasaki-Einstein duals in type IIB string theory. We compute central charges and R-charges of baryonic operators in the resulting two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ theories in three distinct ways: from the field theory side utilizing c-extremization, its recently discovered geometric dual formulation, and holographically using new AdS$_3$ duals of two-dimension…
Using the F-theory realization, we identify a subclass of 6d (1,0) SCFTs whose compactification on a Riemann surface leads to N = 1 4d SCFTs where the moduli space of the Riemann surface is part of the moduli space of the theory. In particular we argue that for a special case of these theories (dual to M5 branes probing ADE singularities), we obtain 4d N = 1 theories whose space of marginal deformations is given by the moduli space of flat ADE connections on a Riemann surface.
We classify 5d N=1 gauge theories carrying a simple gauge group that can arise by mass-deforming 5d SCFTs and 6d SCFTs (compactified on a circle, possibly with a twist). For theories having a 6d UV completion, we determine the tensor branch data of the 6d SCFT and capture the twist in terms of the tensor branch data. We also determine the dualities between these 5d gauge theories, thus determining the sets of gauge theories having a common UV completion.
Making use of the exact solutions of the $N=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories we construct new classes of superconformal field theories (SCFTs) by fine-tuning the moduli parameters and bringing the theories to critical points. In the case of SCFTs constructed from pure gauge theories without matter $N=2$ critical points seem to be classified according to the A-D-E classification as in the two-dimensional SCFTs.
2-group symmetries arise when 1-form symmetries and 0-form symmetries of a theory mix with each other under group multiplication. We discover the existence of 2-group symmetries in 5d N=1 abelian gauge theories arising on the (non-extended) Coulomb branch of 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs), leading us to argue that the UV 5d SCFT itself admits a 2-group symmetry. Furthermore, our analysis determines the global forms of the 0-form flavor symmetry groups of 5d SCFTs, irrespective of whether or not the 5d SCFT admits a 1-form symmetry. As a concrete application of our method, we analyze …
Enhancement of global symmetry and supersymmetry in the infrared is one of the most intriguing phenomena in quantum field theory. We investigate such phenomena in a large class of three dimensional superconformal field theories, known as the S-fold SCFTs. Supersymmetric indices are computed for a number of theories containing small rank gauge groups. It is found that indices of several models exhibit enhancement of supersymmetry at the superconformal fixed point in the infrared. Dualities between S-fold theories that have different quiver descriptions are also analysed. We explore a new class …
We propose a graph-theoretic description to determine and characterize 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) that arise as circle reductions of 6d $\mathcal{N} = (1,0)$ SCFTs. Each 5d SCFT is captured by a graph, called a Combined Fiber Diagram (CFD). Transitions between CFDs encode mass deformations that trigger flows between SCFTs. In this way, the complete set of descendants of a given 6d theory are obtained from a single marginal CFD. The graphs encode key physical information like the superconformal flavor symmetry and BPS states. As an illustration, we ascertain the aforementioned dat…
We find an infinite family of $4D$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ interacting superconformal field theories which enter the description of the strong-coupling limit of $SU(2N+1)$ gauge theories with hypermultiplets in the $\wedge^2(\square)+\text{Sym}^2(\square)$ . These theories arise from the compactification of the $6D$ $(2,0)$ theory of type $A_{2N}$ on a sphere with two full twisted punctures and one minimal untwisted puncture. For $N=1$, this theory is the "new" rank-1 SCFT with $Δ(u)=3$ of Argyres and Wittig. Using the superconformal index, we finally pin down the properties of this theory.
We provide a new extension to the geometric construction of 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs that encapsulates Higgs branch structures with identical global symmetry but different spectra. In particular, we find that there exist distinct 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs that may appear to share their tensor branch description, flavor symmetry algebras, and central charges. For example, such subtleties arise for the very even nilpotent Higgsing of $(\mathfrak{so}_{4k}, \mathfrak{so}_{4k})$ conformal matter; we propose a method to predict at which conformal dimension the Higgs branch operators of the two theories differ via au…
We present evidence for a new class of strongly coupled N = 1 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) motivated by F-theory GUT constructions. These SCFTs arise from D3-brane probes of tilted seven-branes which undergo monodromy. In the probe theory, this tilting corresponds to an N = 1 deformation of an N = 2 SCFT by a matrix of field-dependent masses with non-trivial branch cuts in the eigenvalues. Though these eigenvalues characterize the geometry, we find that they do not uniquely specify the holomorphic data of the physical theory. We also comment on some phenomenological aspects of how the…
We describe a method to determine the anomaly polynomials of general 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs, in terms of the anomaly matching on their tensor branches. This method is almost purely field theoretical, and can be applied to all known 6d SCFTs. We demonstrate our method in many concrete examples, including $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ theories of arbitrary type and the theories on M5 branes on ALE singularities, reproducing the $N^3$ behavior. We check the results against the anomaly polynomials computed M-theoretically via the anomaly inflow.
We present three infinite families of supersymmetric Type IIB backgrounds with AdS$_4$, AdS$_3$ and AdS$_2$ factors, dual to SCFTs in $3$, $2$ and $1$ space-time dimensions respectively. These field theories emerge at low energies, after a twisted compactification of a family of five dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ SCFTs on hyperbolic spaces. The holographic flows across dimensions are explicitly computed. We also discuss a family of SUSY breaking backgrounds, dual to a QCD-like quiver with massive (bi)fundamental matter. Some field theoretical observables are computed for these theories at the fixed…
We consider Type IIB 5-brane configurations for 5d rank 2 superconformal theories which are classified recently by geometry in arXiv:1801.04036. We propose all the 5-brane web diagrams for these rank 2 theories and show dualities between some of different gauge theories with explicit duality map of mass parameters and Coulomb branch moduli. In particular, we explicitly construct 5-brane configurations for $G_2$ gauge theory with six flavors and its dual $Sp(2)$ and $SU(3)$ gauge theories. We also present 5-brane webs for $SU(3)$ theories of Chern-Simons level greater than 5.
We analyze the superconformal theories (SCFTs) which arise in the low-energy limit of N=(4,4) supersymmetric gauge theories in two dimensions, primarily the Higgs branch SCFT. By a direct field theory analysis we find a continuum of "throat"-like states localized near the singularities of the Higgs branch. The "throat" is similar to the "throat" found in the Coulomb branch of the same theories, but the full superconformal field theories of the two branches are different. A particular example is the SCFT of the R^4/Z_2 sigma model with zero theta angle. In the application of the Higgs branch SC…
Building on recent progress in the study of compactifications of $6d$ $(1,0)$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) on Riemann surfaces to $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories, we initiate a systematic study of compactifications of $5d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs on Riemann surfaces to $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories. Specifically, we consider the compactification of the so-called rank 1 Seiberg $E_{N_f+1}$ SCFTs on tori and tubes with flux in their global symmetry, and put the resulting $3d$ theories to various consistency checks. These include matching the (usually enhanced) IR symmetry of the $3d$ theori…
A solution to the infinite coupling problem for N=2 conformal supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions is presented. The infinitely-coupled theories are argued to be interacting superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with weakly gauged flavor groups. Consistency checks of this proposal are found by examining some low-rank examples. As part of these checks, we show how to compute new exact quantities in these SCFTs: the central charges of their flavor current algebras. Also, the isolated rank 1 E_6 and E_7 SCFTs are found as limits of Lagrangian field theories.
We show that there is a family of two-dimensional $(0,2)$ SCFTs associated with twisted compactifications of the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ Leigh-Strassler fixed point on a closed hyperbolic Riemann surface. We calculate the central charges for this class of theories using anomalies and $c$-extremization. In a suitable truncation of the five-dimensional maximal supergravity, we construct supersymmetric $AdS_3$ solutions that are holographic duals of those two-dimensional $(0,2)$ SCFTs. We also exhibit supersymmetric domain wall solutions that are holographically dual to the RG flows betw…
We study six dimensional supergravity theories with superconformal sectors (SCFTs). Instances of such theories can be engineered using type IIB strings, or more generally F-Theory, which translates field theoretic constraints to geometry. Specifically, we study the fate of the discrete 2-form global symmetries of the SCFT sectors. For both $(2,0)$ and $(1,0)$ theories we show that whenever the charge lattice of the SCFT sectors is non-primitively embedded into the charge lattice of the supergravity theory, there is a subgroup of these 2-form symmetries that remains unbroken by BPS strings. By …
We consider all 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ arising from the compactification of exceptional 6d $(2,0)$ SCFTs on a three-punctured sphere with a simple puncture. We find that each of these 4d theories has another origin as a 6d $(1,0)$ SCFT compactified on a torus, which we check by identifying and comparing the central charges and the flavor symmetry. Each 6d theory is identified with a complex structure deformation of $(\mathfrak{e}_n,\mathfrak{e}_n)$ minimal conformal matter, which corresponds to a Higgs branch renormalization group flow. We find that this structure i…
We point out that the moduli spaces of all known 3d $\mathcal{N}=$ 8 and $\mathcal{N}=$ 6 SCFTs, after suitable gaugings of finite symmetry groups, have the form $\mathbb{C}^{4r}/Γ$ where $Γ$ is a real or complex reflection group depending on whether the theory is $\mathcal{N}=$ 8 or $\mathcal{N}=$ 6, respectively. Real reflection groups are either dihedral groups, Weyl groups, or two sporadic cases $H_{3,4}$. Since the BLG theories and the maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories correspond to dihedral and Weyl groups, it is strongly suggested that there are two yet-to-be-discovered 3d $\…
We construct 4d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) whose Coulomb branches have singular complex structures. This implies, in particular, that their Coulomb branch coordinate rings are not freely generated. Our construction also gives examples of distinct SCFTs which have identical moduli space (Coulomb, Higgs, and mixed branch) geometries. These SCFTs thus provide an interesting arena in which to test the relationship between moduli space geometries and conformal field theory data. We construct these SCFTs by gauging certain discrete global symmetries of $\mathcal N=4$ superYang-Mills (sYM)…
We study certain higher-spin chiral operators in N=2 superconformal field theories (SCFTs). In Lagrangian theories, or in theories related to Lagrangian theories by generalized Argyres-Seiberg-Gaiotto duality ("type A" theories in our classification), we give a simple superconformal representation theory proof that such operators do not exist. This argument is independent of the details of the superconformal index. We then use the index to show that if a theory is not of type A but has an N=2-preserving deformation by a relevant operator that takes it to a theory of this type in the infrared, …
We study AdS duals of four-dimensional (4D) $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) on $\mathbb{Z}_k$ S-folds with T-branes that flow to 4D $\mathcal{N}=3$ theories. In a previous study, it was discussed how considering T-brane structure breaks the $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry in 4D SCFTs on $\mathbb{Z}_k$ S-folds down to $\mathcal{N}=1$. In this study, we analyze this effect from the AdS perspective. We also discuss the constructions of 4D $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs on S-folds with T-branes starting from global K3 hypersurfaces whose fibers involve complex multiplications. We choose…
Compactifications of 6D superconformal field theories (SCFTs) on four-manifolds generate a large class of novel 2d quantum field theories. We consider in detail the case of the rank one simple non-Higgsable cluster 6D SCFTs. On the tensor branch of these theories, the gauge group is simple and there are no matter fields. For compactifications on suitably chosen Kahler surfaces, we present evidence that this provides a method to realize 2d SCFTs with N = (0,2) supersymmetry. In particular, we find that reduction on the tensor branch of the 6D SCFT yields a description of the same 2d fixed point…
We consider compactifications of very Higgsable 6d $N =(1,0)$ SCFTs on $T^2$ with non-trivial Stiefel-Whitney classes (or equivalently 't Hooft magnetic fluxes) introduced for their flavor symmetry groups. These systems can also be studied as twisted $S^1$ compactifications of the corresponding 5d theories. We deduce various properties of the resulting 4d $N=2$ SCFTs by combining these two viewpoints. In particular, we find that all 4d rank-1 $N =2$ SCFTs with a dimension-6 Coulomb branch operator with flavor symmetry $\mathfrak{e}_8$, $\mathfrak{usp}(10)$, $\mathfrak{su}(4) $ and $\mathfrak{s…
We develop a technique for counting the number of stress tensor multiplets in a 4D $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT. This provides a simple diagnostic for when an isolated (non-Lagrangian) SCFT is a product of two (or more) such theories. In class-S, the basic building blocks are the isolated SCFTs arising from the compactification of a 6D (2,0) theory on a 3-punctured sphere ("fixture"). We apply our technique to determine when a fixture is a product SCFT. The answer is that this phenomenon is surprisingly rare. In the low-rank $A_{N-1}$, $D_N$ theories and the $E_6$ theory studied by the first author an…
M5-branes probing an ADE singularity lead to 6D SCFTs with (1,0) supersymmetry. On the tensor branch, the M5-branes specify domain walls of a 7D Super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group G of ADE-type, thus providing conformal matter for a broad class of generalized quiver theories. Additionally, these theories have G x G flavor symmetry, and a corresponding Higgs branch. In this note we use the F-theory realization of these theories to calculate the scaling dimension of the operator parameterizing seven-brane recombination, i.e. motion of the stack of M5-branes off of the orbifold singularity.…
We investigate global symmetries for 6D SCFTs and LSTs having a single "unpaired" tensor, that is, a tensor with no associated gauge symmetry. We verify that for every such theory built from F-theory whose tensor has Dirac self-pairing equal to -1, the global symmetry algebra is a subalgebra of $\mathfrak{e}_8$. This result is new if the F-theory presentation of the theory involves a one-parameter family of nodal or cuspidal rational curves (i.e., Kodaira types $I_1$ or $II$) rather than elliptic curves (Kodaira type $I_0$). For such theories, this condition on the global symmetry algebra appe…
