Turning on N=2 supersymmetry-preserving relevant operators in a 4-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theory (SCFT) corresponds to a complex deformation compatible with the rigid special Kahler geometry encoded in the low energy effective action. Field theoretic consistency arguments indicate that there should be many distinct such relevant deformations of each SCFT fixed point. Some new supersymmetry-preserving complex deformations are constructed of isolated rank 1 SCFTs. We also make predictions for the dimensions of certain Higgs branches for some rank 1 SCFTs.
After a short review of the algebraic setting of N=2 superconformal field theories, their chiral ring and their perturbations, I present some recent results on curious relations between the integrability of their perturbations and algebraic properties of their deformed chiral ring. (Lecture given at Hang-zhou, China, Sept 1993)
We classify possible supersymmetry-preserving relevant, marginal, and irrelevant deformations of unitary superconformal theories in $d \geq 3$ dimensions. Our method only relies on symmetries and unitarity. Hence, the results are model independent and do not require a Lagrangian description. Two unifying themes emerge: first, many theories admit deformations that reside in multiplets together with conserved currents. Such deformations can lead to modifications of the supersymmetry algebra by central and non-central charges. Second, many theories with a sufficient amount of supersymmetry do not…
In this paper we present a method of deforming to first order the stress-tensor and the supercurrent of the superstring corresponding to turning on NS-NS bosonic fields. Furthermore we discuss the difficulties associated with turning on spacetime fermions and R-R bosons. We also derive the gauge symmetries of the massless spacetime fields.
We consider one of the well-known solutions in eleven-dimensional supergravity where the seven-dimensional Einstein space is given by a SO(3)-bundle over the CP^2. By reexaming the AdS_4 supergravity scalar potential, the holographic renormalization group flow from N=(0,1) SU(3) x SU(2)-invariant UV fixed point to N=(3,0) SU(3) x SU(2)-invariant IR fixed point is reinterpreted. A dual operator in three-dimensional superconformal Chern-Simons matter theories corresponding to this RG flow is described.
The exact prepotential for $N = 2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is derived from the superconformal anomalous Ward identity for the gauge group SU(2) and SU(3) which can be generalized to any other rank two gauge group.
We construct a one-to-one map between the primary fields of the N=2 superconformal Kazama-Suzuki models G(m,n,k) and G(k,n,m) based on complex Grassmannian cosets, using level-rank duality of Wess-Zumino-Witten models. We then show that conformal weights, superconformal U(1) charges, modular transformation matrices, and fusion rules are preserved under this map, providing strong evidence for the equivalence of these coset models.
We discuss an embedding of $su(n)$ rank-two antisymmetric supercharges in the $su(2,2|d_n)$ superalgebra, where $d_n=n(n-1)/2$. We describe an algorithm to construct the explicit form of the generators of the superalgebra.
We study large classes of renormalization group flows, driven by scalar expectation values or mesonic superpotential terms, away from the conformal fixed points of the 4d supersymmetric gauge theories with $ADE$-type superpotentials. The $a$-maximization procedure allows us to compute the $R$ charges and to check the $a$-theorem conjecture. For a theory obtained by Higgsing the $D_{k+2}$ theory, we use the magnetic dual description proposed by Brodie to determine the parameter region where the resulting theory is at a non-trivial conformal fixed point.
We show that a proposed duality [arXiv:0711.0054] between infinitely coupled gauge theories and superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with weakly gauged flavor groups predicts the existence of new rank 1 SCFTs. These superconformal fixed point theories have the same Coulomb branch singularities as the rank 1 E_6, E_7, and E_8 SCFTs, but have smaller flavor symmetry algebras and different central charges. Gauging various subalgebras of the flavor algebras of these rank 1 SCFTs provides many examples of infinite-coupling dualities, satisfying an intricate set of consistency checks. They also pro…
We propose that a certain $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(4)$ gauge theory flows in the IR to the rank $1$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ strongly coupled SCFT with $E_6$ global symmetry and $25$ free chiral fields. This proposal is tested by comparing various RG invariant quantities, notably, anomalies and the superconformal index. We discuss the generalization to $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(2n+2)$ gauge theory models flowing in the IR to the $R_{(2,2n+1)}$ family of strongly coupled SCFTs plus free fields.
We study the problem of string propagation in a general instanton background for the case of the complete heterotic superstring. We define the concept of generalized HyperK\" ahler manifolds and we relate it to (4,4) superconformal theories. We propose a generalized h-map construction that predicts a universal SU(6) symmetry for the modes of the string excitations moving in an instanton background. We also discuss the role of abstract $N$=4 moduli and, applying it to the particular limit case of the solvable SU(2) X R instanton found by Callan et al. we show that it admits deformations and cor…
We study the properties of 4d N=3 superconformal field theories whose rank is one, i.e. those that reduce to a single vector multiplet on their moduli space of vacua. We find that the moduli space can only be of the form C^3/Z_k for k=1,2,3,4,6, and that the supersymmetry automatically enhances to N=4 for k=1,2. In addition, we determine the central charges a and c in terms of k, and construct the associated 2d chiral algebras, which turn out to be exotic N=2 supersymmetric W-algebras.
We describe an approach to classifying four-dimensional conformal field theories with N=2 supersymmetry and a Coulomb branch of vacua with the topology of the complex plane. We also discuss the Higgs/mixed branches and conformal/flavor central charges.
We study the short multiplet spectrum in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal theories of low rank using the full superconformal indices and the selection rules from the superconformal representation theory. We find a universal expression for the leading terms for the superconformal index of rank one $H_0, H_1, H_2, D_4, E_6, E_7$ theories. From this result, we argue that certain short multiplets appear in the operator product expansions involving stress-tensor, conserved current, and Coulomb branch operator vanish. We also apply the same procedure to 5d superconformal theories and find that $E_1…
Conformal moduli spaces of four-dimensional superconformal theories obtained by deformations of a superpotential are considered. These spaces possess a natural metric (a Zamolodchikov metric). This metric is shown to be Kahler. The proof is based on superconformal Ward identities.
We study geometric engineering of Argyres-Douglas superconformal theories realized by type IIB strings propagating in singular Calabi-Yau threefolds. We use this construction to count the degeneracy of light BPS states under small perturbations away from the conformal point, by computing the degeneracy of D3-branes wrapped around supersymmetric 3-cycles in the Calabi-Yau. We find finitely many BPS states, the number of which depends on how this deformation is done, similarly to the degeneracy of kink solutions for the deformation of N=2 Landau-Ginzburg superconformal theories in two dimensions…
In the so-called (2,2) theory, which is the U(N)^4 circular quiver superconformal Chern-Simons theory with levels (k,0,-k,0), it was known that the instanton effects are described by the free energy of topological strings whose Gopakumar-Vafa invariants coincide with those of the local D_5 del Pezzo geometry. By considering two types of one-parameter rank deformations U(N) x U(N+M) x U(N+2M) x U(N+M) and U(N+M) x U(N) x U(N+M) x U(N), we classify the known diagonal BPS indices by degrees. Together with other two types of one-parameter deformations, we further propose the topological string exp…
We construct analytic solutions of open superstring field theory for any exactly marginal deformation in any boundary superconformal field theory when properly renormalized operator products of the marginal operator are given. Our construction is an extension of the general framework for marginal deformations developed in arXiv:0707.4472 for open bosonic string field theory, and the solutions are based on integrated vertex operators which are closely related to finite deformations in boundary superconformal field theory.
New examples of N=2 supersymmetric conformal field theories are found as fixed points of SU(2) N=2 supersymmetric QCD. Relations among the scaling dimensions of their relevant chiral operators, global symmetries, and Higgs branches are understood in terms of the general structure of relevant deformations of non-trivial N=2 conformal field theories. The spectrum of scaling dimensions found are all those compatible with relevant deformations of a y^2 = x^3 singular curve.
Recently it has been argued that tree-level scattering amplitudes in N=4 Yang-Mills theory are uniquely determined by a careful study of their superconformal and Yangian symmetries. However, at one-loop order these symmetries are known to become anomalous due to infrared divergences. We compute these one-loop anomalies for amplitudes defined through dimensional regularisation by studying the tree-level symmetry transformations of the unitarity branch cuts, keeping track of the crucial collinear terms arising from the holomorphic anomaly. We extract the superconformal anomalies and show that th…
We compute the expectation values of circular Wilson loops in large representations at strong coupling, in the large-N limit of the N=2 superconformal theory with SU(N) gauge group and 2N hypermultiplets. Employing Pestun's matrix integral, we focus attention on symmetric and antisymmetric representations with ranks of order N. We find that large rank antisymmetric loops are independent of the coupling at strong 't Hooft coupling while symmetric Wilson loops grow exponentially with it. Symmetric loops display a non-analyticity as a function of the rank, characterized by the splitting of a sing…
We propose a recursion relation for tree-level scattering amplitudes in three-dimensional Chern-Simons-matter theories. The recursion relation involves a complex deformation of momenta which generalizes the BCFW-deformation used in higher dimensions. Using background field methods, we show that all tree-level superamplitudes of the ABJM theory vanish for large deformations, establishing the validity of the recursion formula. Furthermore, we use the recursion relation to compute six-point and eight-point component amplitudes and match them with independent computations based on Feynman diagrams…
We propose new 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ Seiberg-like dualities by considering various monopole superpotential deformations on 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ $U(N_c)$ SQCDs with fundamental and adjoint matter fields. We provide nontrivial evidence of these new dualities by comparing the superconformal indices, from which we analyze the change of the moduli space due to the monopole deformation. In addition, we perform the $F$-maximization to check the relevance of the monopole deformation for some examples, one of which is found to exhibit nontrivial symmetry enhancement in the IR. We prove such enhancement of t…
The twisting function describing a nonstandard (super-Jordanian) quantum deformation of $osp(1|2)$ is given in explicite closed form. The quantum coproducts and universal R-matrix are presented. The non-uniqueness of the twisting function as well as two real forms of the deformed $osp(1|2)$ superalgebras are considered. One real quantum $osp(1|2)$ superalgebra is interpreted as describing the $κ$-deformation of D=1, N=1 superconformal algebra, which can be applied as a symmetry algebra of N=1 superconformal mechanics.
We construct gravitational solutions that holographically describe two different $d=4$ SCFTs joined together at a co-dimension one, planar RG interface and preserving $d=3$ superconformal symmetry. The RG interface joins $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory on one side with the $\mathcal{N}=1$ Leigh-Strassler SCFT on the other. We construct a family of such solutions, which in general are associated with spatially dependent mass deformations on the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM side, but there is a particular solution for which these deformations vanish. We also construct a Janus solution with the Leigh-Strassler…
We study dynamical supersymmetry breaking in vector-like superconformal N=1 gauge theories. We find appropriate deformations of the superpotential to overcome the problem of the instability of the non supersymmetric vacuum. The request for long lifetime translates into constraints on the physical couplings which in this regime can be controlled through efficient RG analysis.
We study the Bethe Ansatz formula for the superconformal index, in the case of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills with gauge group $SU(N)$. We observe that not all solutions to the Bethe Ansatz Equations (BAEs) contribute to the index, and thus formulate "reduced BAEs" such that all and only their solutions contribute. We then propose, sharpening a conjecture of Arabi Ardehali et al. [arXiv:1912.04169], that there is a one-to-one correspondence between branches of solutions to the reduced BAEs and vacua of the 4d $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ theory. We test the proposal in the case of $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)…
We investigate the Bethe-Ansatz (BA) approach to the superconformal index of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills with SU($N$) gauge group in the context of finite rank, $N$. We explicitly explore the role of the various types of solutions to the Bethe-Ansatz Equations (BAE) in recovering the exact index for $N=2,3$. We classify the BAE solutions as standard (corresponding to a freely acting orbifold $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_m \times \mathbb{Z}_n$) and non-standard. For $N=2$, we find that the index is fully recovered by standard solutions and displays an interesting pattern of cancellations. However…
We bootstrap ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ superconformal field theories in six dimensions, by analyzing the four-point function of flavor current multiplets. Assuming $E_8$ flavor group, we present universal bounds on the central charge $C_T$ and the flavor central charge $C_J$. Based on the numerical data, we conjecture that the rank-one E-string theory saturates the universal lower bound on $C_J$, and numerically determine the spectrum of long multiplets in the rank-one E-string theory. We comment on the possibility of solving the higher-rank E-string theories by bootstrap and thereby probing M-theory o…
In this note we construct a new class of superconformal field theories as mass deformed N=4 super Yang-Mills theories. We will argue that these theories correspond to the fixed points which were recently found by Khavaev, Pilch and Warner studying the deformations of the dual IIB string theory on AdS_5\times S^5.
A quantum deformation of 4-dimensional superconformal algebra realized on quantum superspace is investigated. We study the differential calculus and the action of the quantum generators corresponding to $sl_q(1|4)$ which act on the quantum superspace. We derive deformed $su(1|2,2)$ algebras from the deformed $sl(1|4)$ algebra. Through a contraction procedure we obtain a deformed super-Poincar{é} algebra.
We study the low-energy dynamics of semi-classical vortex strings living above Argyres-Douglas superconformal field theories. The worldsheet theory of the string is shown to be a deformation of the CP^N model which flows in the infra-red to a superconformal minimal model. The scaling dimensions of chiral primary operators are determined and the dimensions of the associated relevant perturbations on the worldsheet and in the four dimensional bulk are found to agree. The vortex string thereby provides a map between the A-series of N=2 superconformal theories in two and four dimensions.
We discuss the signature of the anomalous breaking of the superconformal symmetry in $\mathcal{N}=1$ super Yang Mills theory and its manifestation in the form of anomaly poles. Moreover, we describe the massive deformations of the $\mathcal{N}=1$ theory and the spectral densities of the corresponding anomaly form factors. These are characterized by spectral densities which flow with the mass deformation and turn the continuum contributions from the two-particle cuts of the intermediate states into poles, with a single sum rule satisfied by each component. The poles can be interpreted as signal…
We find a four-dimensional N=1 gauge theory which flows to the minimal interacting N=2 superconformal field theory, the Argyres-Douglas theory, in the infrared up to the extra free chiral multiplets. The gauge theory is obtained from a certain N=1 preserving deformation of the N=2 SU(2) gauge theory with four fundamental hypermultiplets. From this description, we compute the full superconformal index and find agreements with the known results in special limits.
We study the quantum Seiberg-Witten periods of ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal field theories which are obtained by taking the scaling limit of ${\cal N}=2$ $SU(N_c)$ SQCD around the superconformal fixed point. The quantum Seiberg-Witten curves of these superconformal field theories are shown to be classified into the Schrödinger type and the SQCD type, which depend on flavor symmetry at the fixed point. We study the quantum periods and compute the differential operators which relate the quantum periods to the classical ones up to the fourth-order in the deformation parameter.
We consider a one-dimensional Osp($N|2M$) pseudoparticle mechanical model which may be written as a phase space gauge theory. We show how the pseudoparticle model naturally encodes and explains the two-dimensional zero curvature approach to finding extended conformal symmetries. We describe a procedure of partial gauge fixing of these theories which leads generally to theories with superconformally extended ${\cal W}$-algebras. The pseudoparticle model allows one to derive the finite transformations of the gauge and matter fields occurring in these theories with extended conformal symmetries. …
We study the instanton partition functions of two well-known superconformal field theories with mass deformations. Two types of anomaly equations, namely, the modular anomaly and holomorphic anomaly, have been discovered in the literature. We provide a clean solution to the long standing puzzle about their precise relation, and obtain some universal formulas. We show that the partition function is invariant under the SL(2,Z) duality which exchanges theories at strong coupling with those of weak coupling.
In this note we study four dimensional theories with N=3 superconformal symmetry, that do not also have N=4 supersymmetry. No examples of such theories are known, but their existence is also not ruled out. We analyze several properties that such theories must have. We show that their conformal anomalies obey a=c. Using the N=3 superconformal algebra, we show that they do not have any exactly marginal deformations preserving N=3 supersymmetry, or global symmetries (except for their R-symmetries). Finally, we analyze the possible dimensions of chiral operators labeling their moduli space.
Quantization of the geometric quasiconformal realizations of noncompact groups and supergroups leads directly to their minimal unitary representations (minreps). Using quasiconformal methods massless unitary supermultiplets of superconformal groups SU(2,2|N) and OSp(8*|2n) in four and six dimensions were constructed as minreps and their U(1) and SU(2) deformations, respectively. In this paper we extend these results to SU(2) deformations of the minrep of N=4 superconformal algebra D(2,1;λ) in one dimension. We find that SU(2) deformations can be achieved using n pairs of bosons and m pairs of …
Recently, a 2d coset model with N=3 superconformal symmetry was proposed to be holographic dual to a higher spin supergravity on AdS_3 and the relation to superstring theory was discussed. However, away from the tensionless limit, there is no higher spin symmetry and the higher spin states are massive. In this paper, we examine the deformations of the coset model which preserve N=3 superconformal symmetry, but break generic higher spin symmetry. We focus on double-trace type deformations which are dual to changes of boundary conditions for the bulk matter fields. In the bulk theory, the symmet…
We find a simple relation between two-dimensional BPS N=2 superconformal blocks and bosonic Virasoro conformal blocks, which allows us to analyze the crossing equations for BPS 4-point functions in unitary (2,2) superconformal theories numerically with semidefinite programming. We constrain gaps in the non-BPS spectrum through the operator product expansion of BPS operators, in ways that depend on the moduli of exactly marginal deformations through chiral ring coefficients. In some cases, our bounds on the spectral gaps are observed to be saturated by free theories, by N=2 Liouville theory, an…
Under reasonable assumptions about the complex structure of the set of singularities on the Coulomb branch of $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal field theories, we present a relatively simple and elementary argument showing that the scaling dimension, $Δ$, of a Coulomb branch operator of a rank $r$ theory is allowed to take values in a finite set of rational numbers$Δ\in \big[\frac{n}{m}\big|n,m\in\mathbb N, 0<m\le n, gcd(n,m)=1,\ φ(n)\le2r\big]$ where $φ(n)$ is the Euler totient function. The maximal dimension grows superlinearly with rank as $Δ_\text{max} \sim r \ln\ln r$. This agrees with the re…
We show how three-dimensional superconformal theories for any number N <= 8 of supersymmetries can be obtained by taking a conformal limit of the corresponding three-dimensional gauged supergravity models. The superconformal theories are characterized by an embedding tensor that satisfies a linear and quadratic constraint. We analyze these constraints and give the general solutions for all cases. We find new N = 4,5 superconformal theories based on the exceptional Lie superalgebras F(4), G(3) and D(2|1;α). Using the supergravity connection we discuss which massive deformations to expect. As an…
We apply the technique of supersymmetric localization to exactly compute the $S^5$ partition function of several large $N$ superconformal field theories in five dimensions that have $AdS_6$ duals in massive type IIA supergravity. The localization computations are performed in the non-renormalizable effective field theories obtained through relevant deformations of the UV superconformal field theories. We compare the $S^5$ free energy to a holographic computation of entanglement entropy in the $AdS_6$ duals and find perfect agreement. In particular, we reproduce the $N^{5/2}$ scaling of the $S^…
We initiate the classification of unitary superconformal defects in unitary superconformal field theories (SCFT) of diverse spacetime dimensions $3\leq d \leq 6$. Our method explores general constraints from the defect superconformal symmetry, unitarity, as well as consistency conditions of local bulk-defect couplings. Such features are common to all superconformal defects regardless of any Lagrangian description. In particular, modified Ward identities of conserved currents in the presence of the defect induce a distinguished set of conformal primary operators on the defect worldvolume, which…
It is known that the two- and three-point functions of Higgs-branch superconformal primaries in 4d N=2 superconformal field theories obey non-renormalization theorems on N=2 superconformal manifolds. In this paper we prove a stronger statement, that the bundles of Higgs-branch superconformal primaries over N=2 superconformal manifolds are endowed with a flat connection, or equivalently that Higgs-branch superconformal primaries have vanishing Berry phases under N=2 exactly marginal deformations. This statement fits well with the proposed correspondence between the rigid structures of 2d chiral…
In the paper, based on recent studies on $T\bar{T}$ deformation of 2D field theory with supersymmetry, we investigate the deformed correlation functions in $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ 2D superconformal field theories. Up to the leading order in perturbation theory, we compute the correlation functions under $T\bar{T}$ deformation. The correlation functions in these undeformed theories are almost known, and together with the help of superconformal Ward identity in $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ theories respectively we can obtain the correlation functions with opera…
We analyze in detail the relation between an exactly marginal deformation of N=4 SYM - the Leigh-Strassler or ``beta-deformation'' - and its string theory dual (recently constructed in hep-th/0502086) by comparing energies of semiclassical strings to anomalous dimensions of gauge-theory operators in the two-scalar sector. We stress the existence of integrable structures on the two sides of the duality. In particular, we argue that the integrability of strings in AdS_5 x S^5 implies the integrability of the deformed world sheet theory with real deformation parameter. We compare the fast string …
We study N=1 superconformal theories in four dimensions obtained wrapping M5 branes on a Riemann surface. We propose a method to determine from the spectral curve the scaling dimension of chiral operators in the SCFT. Whenever the R-symmetry has to be determined via a-maximization, our procedure allows us to determine the charge of chiral operators under the "trial" R-symmetry. Our proposal reduces to the correct prescription in the special case of N=2 theories of class S. We perform several consistency checks and apply our method to study some new SCFT's such as N=1 deformations of Argyres-Do…
We show that extremal correlators in all Lagrangian ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal field theories with a simple gauge group are governed by the same universal Toda system of equations, which dictates the structure of extremal correlators to all orders in the perturbation series. A key point is the construction of a convenient orthogonal basis for the chiral ring, by arranging towers of operators in order of increasing dimension, which has the property that the associated two-point functions satisfy decoupled Toda chain equations. We explicitly verify this in all known SCFTs based on $\mathrm{SU}(…
We study a class of near-BPS operators for a complex 2-parameter family of N=1 superconformal Yang-Mills theories that can be obtained by a Leigh-Strassler deformation of N=4 SYM theory. We identify these operators in the large N and large R-charge limit and compute their exact scaling dimensions using N=1 superspace methods. From these scaling dimensions we attempt to reverse-engineer the light-cone worldsheet theory that describes string propagation on the Penrose limit of the dual geometry.
We review aspects of superconformal indices in three dimension. Three dimensional superconformal indices can be exactly computed by using localization method including monopole contribution, and can be applied to provide evidences for mirror duality, AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence and global symmetry enhancement of strongly coupled gauge theories. After reviewing, we discuss the possibility of global symmetry enhancement in a finite rank of gauge group.
The behavior of the beta-function of the low-energy effective coupling in the N=2 supersymmetric SU(2) QCD with several massive matter hypermultiplets and in the SU(3) Yang-Mills theory is determined near the superconformal points in the moduli space. The renormalization group flow is unambiguously fixed by looking at limited types of deformation near the superconformal points. It is pointed out that the scaling dimension of the beta-function is controlled by the scaling behavior of moduli parameters and the relation between them is explicitly worked out. Our scaling dimensions of the beta-fun…
We study superconformal deformations of the $T_ρ^{\hatρ}[SU(N)]$ theories of Gaiotto-Hanany-Witten, paying special attention to mixed-branch operators with both electrically- and magnetically-charged fields. We explain why all marginal ${\cal N}=2$ operators of an ${\cal N}=4$ CFT$_3$ can be extracted unambiguously from the superconformal index. Computing the index at the appropriate order we show that the mixed moduli in $T_ρ^{\hatρ}[SU(N)]$ theories are double-string operators transforming in the (Adjoint, Adjoint) representation of the electric and magnetic flavour groups, up to some overco…
We test several expected isomorphisms between the U(N)xU(N) ABJM theory and (SU(N)xSU(N))/Z_N theory including the BLG theory by comparing their superconformal indices. From moduli space analysis, it is expected that this equivalence can hold if and only if the rank N and Chern-Simons level k are coprime. We also calculate the index of the ABJ theory and investigate whether some theories with identical moduli spaces are isomorphic or not.
We study the BPS index for the four-dimensional rank-one N=2 superconformal field theories H_0, H_1, H_2, E_6, E_7, E_8. We consider compactifications of the E-string theory on T^2 in which these theories arise as low energy limits. Using this realization we clarify the general structure of the BPS index. The index is characterized by two exponents and a sequence of invariants. We determine the exponents and the first few invariants.
