We study non-supersymmetric minima in N_f=N_c SQCD conjectured by Intriligator, Seiberg and Shih (ISS). We show that the existence of such minima depends on the signs of three non-calculable parameters and that no evidence can be inferred by deforming the theory. We illustrate this by demonstrating that the conjectured minimum is destabilized in a different deformation of N_f=N_c SQCD. We also comment briefly on the phenomenological consequences of this instability.
We search for viable models of direct gauge mediation, where the SUSY-breaking sector is (generalized) SQCD, which has cosmologically favorable uplifted vacua even when the reheating temperature is well above the messenger scale. This requires a relatively large tadpole term in the scalar potential for the spurion field X and, consequently, we argue that pure (deformed) SQCD is not a viable model. On the other hand, in SQCD with an adjoint, which is natural e.g. in string theory, assuming an appropriate sign in the Kahler potential for X, such metastable vacua are possible.
We study how dynamically breaking SQCD can be obtained on two intersecting seven-branes in F-theory. In the mechanism which we present in this paper one of the seven-branes is responsible for producing the low-energy gauge group and the other one is for generating vector bundle moduli. The fundamental matter charged under the gauge group is localized on the intersection. The mass of the matter fields is controlled by the vector bundle moduli. The analysis of under what conditions a sufficient number of the fundamental flavors becomes light turns out to be equivalent to the analysis of non-pert…
We review progress in studying the solutions of SQCD in the presence of explicit, soft SUSY breaking terms. Massive N=1 SQCD in the presence of a small gaugino mass leads to a controlled solution which has interesting phase structure with changing theta angle reminiscent of the QCD chiral Lagrangian. Current attempts to test the solutions of pure glue SQCD on the lattice require a theoretical understanding of the theory with small gaugino mass in order to understand the approach to the SUSY point. We provide such a description making predictions for the gaugino condensate and lightest bound st…
We show that supersymmetry and R-symmetry can be dynamically broken in a long-lived metastable vacuum of SQCD with massive and massless flavors. The vacuum results from a competition of a (leading) two-loop effect and small "Planck" suppressed higher-dimension operators. This mechanism provides a particularly simple realization of dynamical SUSY and R-symmetry breaking, and as such it is a good starting point for building phenomenologically viable models of gauge mediation. We take a preliminary step in this direction by constructing a complete model of minimal gauge mediation. Here we find th…
We investigate neutralino dark matter from a string/M-theory perspective. Using the Kallosh-Linde (KL) scenario to stabilize the string moduli requires supersymmetry breaking for uplifting to a de Sitter vacuum. We consider the free magnetic dual description of $\mathcal{N}=1$ SUSY QCD with massive flavours, the Intriligator-Seiberg-Shih model (ISS), as an F-term dynamical SUSY breaking sector. This framework allows for a gravitino mass in the TeV range. Moreover, due to the plethora of particles from the ISS sector, we investigate the consequences of coupling the MSSM with the KL-ISS setup to…
The similarity of massive CSW scalar vertices and quark vertices can be understood using a kind of light-cone SUSY transformation presented in this paper. We also show that the canonical transformation generating the MHV-SQCD lagrangian, can be fixed by applying this light-cone SUSY transformation to the canonical transformation for MHV-QCD obtained in paper arxiv:0805.0239. Most of the massive CSW vertices for SQCD can also be pinned down in this way.
We investigate the behavior of softly broken $N=2$ SQCD at non-zero bare theta angle $θ_0$, using superfield spurions to implement the SUSY breaking. We find a first-order phase transition as $θ_0$ is varied from zero to $2 π$, in agreement with a prediction of `t Hooft. The low-energy theta angle $θ_{eff}$, which determines the effective charges of dyonic excitations, has a complicated dependence on $θ_0$ and breaking parameters.
We consider the Seiberg-Witten Toda chains arising in the context of exact solutions to N=2 SUSY Yang-Mills and their relation to the properties of N=1 SUSY gauge theories. In particular, we discuss their "perturbative" and "solitonic" degenerations and demonstrate some relations of the latter ones to the confining properties of N=1 vacua.
We study how coupling to supergravity affects the phase structure of a system exhibiting dynamical supersymmetry breaking in a metastable vacuum. More precisely, we consider the Seiberg dual of SQCD coupled to supergravity at finite temperature. We show that the gravitational interactions decrease the critical temperature for the second order phase transition in the quark direction, that is also present in the global case. Furthermore, we find that, due to supergravity, a new second order phase transition occurs in the meson direction, whenever there is a nonvanishing constant term in the supe…
We study supersymmetry breaking metastable vacua arising from beta deformed quiver gauge theories. The relation between the bounds on metastability and the deformation are discussed. Metastable supersymmetry breaking vacua are found in the IR of beta deformed cascading quivers with vector-like field content. Furthermore the limiting case of massive Nf=Nc SQCD appears in the IR of gauge theories with chiral-like field content. We comment on the field theory origin of the deformation and on possible applications in AdS/CFT.
We briefly review the instanton-torus knot duality found in 5d SUSY gauge theories with one compact dimension. The fermion condensate turn out to be the generating function for the torus knot polynomials colored by the fundamental representation.
Gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions can admit monopole operators in the potential. Starting with the theory without monopole potential, if the monopole potential is relevant there is an RG flow to the monopole-deformed theory. Here, focusing on U(Nc) SQCD with Nf flavors and N=2 supersymmetry, we show that even when the monopole potential is irrelevant, the monopole-modified theory Tm can exist and enjoy Seiberg-like dualities. We provide a renormalizable UV completion of Tm and an electric-magnetic dual description Tm'. We subject our proposal to various consistency checks such as mass deformati…
By the use of an effective superpotential in supersymmetric quantum chromodynamics (SQCD) with N_f flavors and N_c colors of quarks for N_f>=N_c+2, the influence of soft supersymmetry (SUSY) breakings is examined to clarify dynamics of chiral symmetry breakings near the SUSY limit. In case that SQCD triggers spontaneous chiral symmetry breakings, it is possible to show that our superpotential dynamically favors the successive formation of condensates, leaving either SU(N_f-N_c) or SU(N_f-N_c+1) unbroken as a chiral nonabelian symmetry.
We consider supersymmetric QCD in the free magnetic phase with massless and massive flavors. The theory has a supersymmetry breaking pseudo-moduli space of vacua and a runaway behavior far away from the origin. A two-loop computation reveals that the origin is destabilized and there is no meta-stable SUSY breaking solution. We also study the embedding of this model in type IIA string theory and find evidence for similar behavior. The perturbative brane dynamics involves simple interactions between branes, correctly predicting the two-loop result in the gauge theory. Our results also apply to t…
We revisit N_f=N_c SQCD and its non-supersymmetric minima conjectured by Intriligator, Seiberg and Shih (ISS). We argue that the existence of such minima depends on the signs of three non-calculable parameters and that no evidence can be inferred by deforming the theory. We demonstrate this by studying a deformation of the theory which involves additional gauge singlets. In this case, the conjectured minimum is destabilized. We comment on the consequences of such singlets in models of direct mediation and in particular in the Pentagon model.
We study the existence of long-lived meta-stable supersymmetry breaking vacua in gauge theories with massless quarks, upon the addition of extra massive flavors. A simple realization is provided by a modified version of SQCD with N_{f,0} < N_c massless flavors, N_{f,1} massive flavors and additional singlet chiral fields. This theory has local meta-stable minima separated from a runaway behavior at infinity by a potential barrier. We find further examples of such meta-stable minima in flavored versions of quiver gauge theories on fractional branes at singularities with obstructed complex defor…
We study a new mechanism to dynamically break supersymmetry in the E8xE8 heterotic string. As discussed recently in the literature, a long-lived, meta-stable non-supersymmetric vacuum can be achieved in an N=1 SQCD whose spectrum contains a sufficient number of light fundamental flavors. In this paper, we present, within the context of the hidden sector of the weakly and strongly coupled heterotic string, a slope-stable, holomorphic vector bundle on a Calabi-Yau threefold for which all matter fields are in the fundamental representation and are massive at generic points in moduli space. It is …
We show in (1+2) dimensions that supersymmetric (SUSY) BF action for a (minimal and off-shell) spin-(1,3/2) supermultiplet is a unique SUSY invariant one required from the closure property of commutator algebra for SUSY transformations.
The effective potential in the model introduced by Buchbinder-Inagaki-Odintsov (BIO) which represents SUSY NJL model non-minimally coupled with the external gravitational field is found. The topology of the space is considered to be non-trivial. Chiral symmetry breaking under the action of external curvature and non-trivial topology is investigated.
The electroweak (EW) symmetry breaking in the simplest supersymmetric (SUSY) extensions of the standard model (SM), i.e. minimal and next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard models (MSSM and NMSSM), is considered. The spectrum of the Higgs particles, upper bound on the mass of the lightest Higgs boson and little hierarchy problem are discussed. The breakdown of gauge symmetry and Higgs phenomenology within the E6 inspired SUSY models with extra U(1)' factor are briefly reviewed.
In the string landscape picture, the effective potential is characterized by an enormous number of local minima of which only a minuscule fraction are suitable for the evolution of life. In this "multiverse", random transitions are continually made between the various minima with the most likely transitions being to minima of lower vacuum energy. The inflationary era in the very early universe ended with such a transition to our current phase which is described by a broken supersymmetry and a small, positive vacuum energy. However, it is likely that an exactly supersymmetric (susy) phase of ze…
We consider Supersymmetric (SUSY) and non-SUSY models of chaotic inflation based on the simplest power-law potential with exponents n=2 and 4. We propose a convenient non-minimal coupling to gravity and a non-minimal kinetic term which ensure, mainly for n=4, inflationary observables favored by the BICEP2/Keck Array and Planck results. Inflation can be attained for subplanckian inflaton values with the corresponding effective theories retaining the perturbative unitarity up to the Planck scale.
We propose a limited class of models, describing interacting chiral multiplets with a non-minimal coupling to a vector multiplet, in curved superspace of $N=1$ supergravity. Those models are suitable for the inflationary model building in supergravity with inflaton assigned to a massive vector multiplet and spontaneous SUSY breaking in Minkowski vacuum after inflation, for any values of the inflationary parameters $n_s$ and $r$, and any scale of SUSY breaking.
