We prove that $L_2(\mathbb{R})$ contains a Schauder basis of non-negative functions. Similarly, $L_p(\mathbb{R})$ contains a Schauder basic sequence of non-negative functions such that $L_p(\mathbb{R})$ embeds into the closed span of the sequence. We prove as well that if $X$ is a separable Banach space with the bounded approximation property, then any set in $X$ with dense span contains a quasi-basis (Schauder frame) for $X$. Furthermore, if $X$ is a separable Banach lattice with a bibasis then any set in $X$ with dense span contains a u-frame.
We construct a Schauder basis for $L_1$ consisting of non-negative functions and investigate unconditionally basic and quasibasic sequences of non-negative functions in $L_p$, $1\le p < \infty$.
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a complex separable Hilbert space. We prove that if $\{f_{n}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ is a Schauder basis of the Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, then the angles between any two vectors in this basis must have a positive lower bound. Furthermore, we investigate that $\{z^{σ^{-1}(n)}\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ can never be a Schauder basis of $L^{2}(\mathbb{T},ν)$, where $\mathbb{T}$ is the unit circle, $ν$ is a finite positive discrete measure, and $σ: \mathbb{Z} \rightarrow \mathbb{N}$ is an arbitrary surjective and injective map.
In the present note we give a construction (based on a retractional argument) of a Schauder basis for the Lipschitz free space $\mathcal{F}(N)$, over a net $N$ in any separable infinite dimensional $\mathcal{L}_\infty$-space $X$. In particular, this yields the first example of an infinite dimensional Banach space $X$ not containing $c_0$ with such a property.
We show that the basis constant of every retractional Schauder basis on the Free space of a graph circle increases with the radius. As a consequence, there exists a uniformly discrete subset $M\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ such that $\mathcal F(M)$ does not have a retractional Schauder basis. Furthermore, we show that for any net $ N\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$ there is no retractional unconditional basis on the Free space $\mathcal F(N)$.
We give an intrinsic characterisation of the separable reflexive Banach spaces that embed into separable reflexive spaces with an unconditional basis all of whose normalised block sequences with the same growth rate are equivalent. This uses methods of E. Odell and T. Schlumprecht.
We extend the well-known characterizations of convergence in the spaces $l_p$ ($1\le p<\infty$) of $p$-summable sequence and $c_0$ of vanishing sequences to a general characterization of convergence in a Banach space with a Schauder basis and obtain as instant corollaries characterizations of convergence in an infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space and the space $c$ of convergent sequences.
In the present note we give two explicit constructions (based on a retractional argument) of a Schauder basis for the Lipschitz free space $\mathcal{F}(N)$, over certain uniformly discrete metric spaces $N$. The first one applies to every net $N$ in a finite dimensional Banach space, leading to the basis constant independent of the dimension. The second one applies to grids in Banach spaces with an FDD. As a corollary, we obtain a retractional Schauder basis for the Lipschitz free space $\mathcal{F}(N)$ over a net $N$ in every Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis containing a copy of $c_0$, …
For a Banach space $X$ with a shrinking Schauder frame $(x_i,f_i)$ we provide an explicit method for constructing a shrinking associated basis. In the case that the minimal associated basis is not shrinking, we prove that every shrinking associated basis of $(x_i,f_i)$ dominates an uncountable family of incomparable shrinking associated bases of $(x_i,f_i)$. By adapting a construction of Pełczy{ń}ski, we characterize spaces with shrinking Schauder frames as spaces having the $w^*$-bounded approximation property.
We develope a local theory for frames on finite dimensional Hilbert spaces. In particular, a bounded frame on a finite dimensional Hilbert space contains a subset which is a good Riesz basis for a percentage (arbitrarily close to one) of the space. We also construct a normalized frame for a Hilbert space which contains a subset which is a Schauder basis for H but does not contain any subset which is a Riesz basis for H.
The main result of this paper is a fixed point result relating the spreading model structure of Banach spaces and Schauder basis with not too large basis constant. As a striking consequence, we deduce that every super-reflexive space has the fixed point property thus solving a long-standing open question in metric fixed point theory.
We consider evolution differential equations in Fréchet spaces that possess unconditional Schauder basis and construct a version of the majorant functions method to obtain existence theorems for Cauchy problems. Applications to PDE and ODE have been considered.
In this paper, we firstly give a matrix approach to the bases of a separable Hilbert space and then correct a mistake appearing in both review and the English translation of the Olevskii's paper. After this, we show that even a diagonal compact operator may map an orthonormal basis into a conditional basis.
We present an isometric version of the complementably universal Banach space $\mathbb{P}$ with a Schauder decomposition. The space $\mathbb{P}$ is isomorphic to Pełczyński's space with a universal basis as well as to Kadec' complementably universal space with the bounded approximation property.
We prove that a Schauder frame for any separable Banach space is shrinking if and only if it has an associated space with a shrinking basis, and that a Schauder frame for any separable Banach space is shrinking and boundedly complete if and only if it has a reflexive associated space. To obtain these results, we prove that the upper and lower estimate theorems for finite dimensional decompositions of Banach spaces can be extended and modified to Schauder frames. We show as well that if a separable infinite dimensional Banach space has a Schauder frame, then it also has a Schauder frame which i…
We show that, for suitable enumerations, the multivariate Haar system is a Schauder basis in the classical Sobolev spaces on $\mathbb R^d$ with integrability $1<p<\infty$ and smoothness $1/p-1<s<1/p$. This complements earlier work by the last two authors on the unconditionality of the Haar system and implies that it is a {conditional} Schauder basis for a nonempty open subset of the $(1/p,s)$-diagram. The results extend to (quasi-)Banach spaces of Hardy-Sobolev and Triebel-Lizorkin type in the range of parameters $\frac{d}{d+1}<p<\infty$ and $\max\{d(1/p-1),1/p-1\}<s<\min\{1,1/p\}$, which is o…
We consider the classical Cauchy problem for the linear heat equation and integrable initial data in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^N$. In the case $N=1$ we show that given a weighted $L^p$-space $L_w^p(\mathbb{R})$ with $1 \leq p < \infty$ and a fast growing weight $w$, there is a Schauder basis $(e_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ in $L_ w^p(\mathbb{R})$ with the following property: given a positive integer $m $ there exists $n_m > 0$ such that, if the initial data $f$ belongs to the closed linear space of $e_n$ with $n \geq n_m$, then the decay rate of the solution of the heat equation is at least $t^{-m}…
Let $A$ be a finite subset of $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ and $p,q\in\mathbb{N}$. We characterize the Schauder basis properties in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ of the Gabor system $$G(1,p/q,A)=\{e^{2πi m x}g(x-np/q) : m,n\in \mathbb{Z}, g\in A\},$$ with a specific ordering on $\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z}\times A$. The characterization is given in terms of a Muckenhoupt matrix $A_2$ condition on an associated Zibulski-Zeevi type matrix.
We introduce and study two notions of entropy in a Banach space X with a normalized Schauder basis . The geometric entropy E(A) of a subset A of X is defined to be the infimum of radii of compact bricks containing A. We obtain several compactness characterizations for bricks (Theorem 3.7) useful for main results. We also obtain sufficient conditions on a set in a Hilbert space to have finite unconditional entropy. For Banach spaces without a Schauder basis we offer another entropy, called the Auerbach entropy. Finally, we pose some open problems.
Under the assumption that $V \in L^2([0,π]; dx)$, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for (non-self-adjoint) Schrödinger operators $-d^2/dx^2+V$ in $L^2([0,π]; dx)$ with periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions to possess a Riesz basis of root vectors (i.e., eigenvectors and generalized eigenvectors spanning the range of the Riesz projection associated with the corresponding periodic and antiperiodic eigenvalues). We also discuss the case of a Schauder basis for periodic and antiperiodic Schrödinger operators $-d^2/dx^2+V$ in $L^p([0,π]; dx)$, $p \in (1,\infty)$.
It is shown that the monomials $Λ=(z^n)_{n=0}^{\infty}$ are a Schauder basis of the Fréchet spaces $A_+^{-γ}, \ γ\geq 0,$ that consists of all the analytic functions $f$ on the unit disc such that $(1-|z|)^μ|f(z)|$ is bounded for all $μ> γ$. Lusky \cite{L} proved that $Λ$ is not a Schauder basis for the closure of the polynomials in weighted Banach spaces of analytic functions of type $H^{\infty}$. A sequence space representation of the Fréchet space $A_+^{-γ}$ is presented. The case of (LB)-spaces $A_{-}^{-γ}, \ γ> 0,$ that are defined as unions of weighted Banach spaces is also studied.
We prove that in every separable Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis and a $C^k$-smooth norm it is possible to approximate, uniformly on bounded sets, every equivalent norm with a $C^k$-smooth one in a way that the approximation is improving as fast as we wish on the elements depending only on the tail of the Schauder basis. Our result solves a problem from the recent monograph of Guirao, Montesinos and Zizler.
It is a classical result that every $\mathbb{C}$-valued holomorphic function has a local power series representation. This even remains true for holomorphic functions with values in a locally complete locally convex Hausdorff space $E$ over $\mathbb{C}$. Motivated by this example we try to answer the following question. Let $E$ be a locally convex Hausdorff space over a field $\mathbb{K}$, $\mathcal{F}(Ω)$ be a locally convex Hausdorff space of $\mathbb{K}$-valued functions on a set $Ω$ and $\mathcal{F}(Ω,E)$ be an $E$-valued counterpart of $\mathcal{F}(Ω)$ (where the term $E$-valued counterpa…
For a constant $K\geq 1$ let $\mathfrak{B}_K$ be the class of pairs $(X,(\mathbf e_n)_{n\inω})$ consisting of a Banach space $X$ and an unconditional Schauder basis $(\mathbf e_n)_{n\inω}$ for $X$, having the unconditional basic constant $K_u\leq K$. Such pairs are called $K$-based Banach spaces. A based Banach space $X$ is rational if the unit ball of any finite-dimensional subspace spanned by finitely many basic vectors is a polyhedron whose vertices have rational coordinates in the Schauder basis of $X$. Using the technique of Fraïssé theory, we construct a rational $K$-based Banach space $…
We provide a characterization of the Banach spaces $X$ with a Schauder basis $(e_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ which have the property that the dual space $X^*$ is naturally isomorphic to the space $\mathcal{L}_{diag}(X)$ of diagonal operators with respect to $(e_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ . We also construct a Hereditarily Indecomposable Banach space ${\mathfrak X}_D$ with a Schauder basis $(e_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ such that ${\mathfrak X}^*_D$ is isometric to $\mathcal{L}_{diag}({\mathfrak X}_D)$ with these Banach algebras being Hereditarily Indecomposable. Finally, we show that every $T\in \mathcal{L}_{dia…
This paper is devoted to the question of constructing a higher order Faber spline basis for the sampling discretization of functions with higher regularity than Lipschitz. The basis constructed in this paper has similar properties as the piecewise linear classical Faber-Schauder basis except for the compactness of the support. Although the new basis functions are supported on the real line they are very well localized (exponentially decaying) and the main parts are concentrated on a segment. This construction gives a complete answer to Problem 3.13 in Triebel's monograph (see References [47]) …
We construct a Hereditarily Indecomposable Banach space $\eqs_d$ with a Schauder basis \seq{e}{n} on which there exist strictly singular non-compact diagonal operators. Moreover, the space $\mc{L}_{\diag}(\eqs_d)$ of diagonal operators with respect to the basis \seq{e}{n} contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_{\infty}(\N)$.
We introduce a non-commutative Walsh system and prove that it forms a Schauder basis in the Lp-spaces (1 < p < \infty) associated with the hyperfinite III_λ-factors (0 < λ<= 1).
We prove that a sequence $(f_i)_{i=1}^\infty$ of translates of a fixed $f\in L_p(R)$ cannot be an unconditional basis of $L_p(R)$ for any $1\le p<\infty$. In contrast to this, for every $2<p<\infty$, $d\in N$ and unbounded sequence $(λ_n)_{n\in N}\subset R^d$ we establish the existence of a function $f\in L_p(R^d)$ and sequence $(g^*_n)_{n\in N}\subset L_p^*(R^d)$ such that $(T_{λ_n} f, g^*_n)_{n\in N}$ forms an unconditional Schauder frame for $L_p(R^d)$. In particular, there exists a Schauder frame of integer translates for $L_p(R)$ if (and only if) $2<p<\infty$.
We prove that, given $2<p<\infty$, the Fourier coefficients of functions in $L_2(\mathbb{T}, \lvert t \rvert^{1-2/p}\, dt)$ belong to $\ell_p$, and that, given $1<p<2$, the Fourier series of sequences in $\ell_p$ belong $L_2(\mathbb{T}, \lvert t \rvert^{2/p-1}\, dt)$. Then, we apply these results to the study of conditional Schauder bases and conditional almost greedy bases in Banach spaces. Specifically, we prove that, for every $1<p<\infty$ and every $0\le α<1$, there is a Schauder basis of $\ell_p$ whose conditionality constants grow as $(m^α)_{m=1}^\infty$, and there is an almost greedy ba…
We study Schauder basis properties for the Haar system in Besov spaces $B^s_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^d)$. We give a complete description of the limiting cases, obtaining various positive results for $q\leq \min\{1,p\}$, and providing new counterexamples in other situations. The study is based on suitable estimates of the dyadic averaging operators $\mathbb{E}_N$; in particular we find asymptotically optimal growth rates for the norms of these operators in global and local situations.
We prove that if $ C $ is a family of separable Banach spaces which is analytic with respect to the Effros-Borel structure and none member of $ C $ is isometrically universal for all separable Banach spaces, then there exists a separable Banach space with a monotone Schauder basis which is isometrically universal for $ C $ but still not for all separable Banach spaces. We also establish an analogous result for the class of strictly convex spaces.
We prove that the Hermite functions are an absolute Schauder basis for many global weighted spaces of ultradifferentiable functions in the matrix weighted setting and we determine also the corresponding coefficient spaces, thus extending previous work by Langenbruch. As a consequence we give very general conditions for these spaces to be nuclear. In particular, we obtain the corresponding results for spaces defined by weight functions.
