A subgroup $H$ of a group $G$ is said to be {\it pronormal} in $G$ if $H$ and $H^g$ are conjugate in $\langle H, H^g \rangle$ for each $g \in G$. Some problems in Finite Group Theory, Combinatorics, and Permutation Group Theory were solved in terms of pronormality, therefore, the question of pronormality of a given subgroup in a given group is of interest. Subgroups of odd index in finite groups satisfy a native necessary condition of pronormality. In this paper we continue investigations on pronormality of subgroups of odd index and consider the pronormality question for subgroups of odd index in some direct products of finite groups.
In particular, in this paper we prove that the subgroups of odd index are pronormal in the direct product $G$ of finite simple symplectic groups over fields of odd characteristics if and only if the subgroups of odd index are pronormal in each direct factor of $G$. Moreover, deciding the pronormality of a given subgroup of odd index in the direct product of simple symplectic groups over fields of odd characteristics is reducible to deciding the pronormality of some subgroup $H$ of odd index in a subgroup of $\prod_{i=1}^t \mathbb{Z}_3\wr Sym_{n_i}$, where each $Sym_{n_i}$ acts naturally on $\{1,\dots, n_i\}$, such that $H$ projects onto $\prod_{i=1}^t Sym_{n_i}$. Thus, in this paper we obtain a criterion of pronormality of a subgroup $H$ of odd index in a subgroup of $\prod_{i=1}^t \mathbb{Z}_{p_i}\wr Sym_{n_i}$, where each $p_i$ is a prime and each $Sym_{n_i}$ acts naturally on $\{1,\dots, n_i\}$, such that $H$ projects onto $\prod_{i=1}^t Sym_{n_i}$.
Fix a set of primes $π$. A finite group is said to satisfy $C_π$ or, in other words, to be a $C_π$-group, if it possesses exactly one class of conjugate $π$-Hall subgroups. The pronormality of $π$-Hall subgroups in $C_π$-groups is proven, or, equivalently, we prove that $C_π$ is inherited by overgroups of $π$-Hall subgroups. Thus an affirmative solution to Problem 17.44(a) from the "Kourovka notebook" is obtained. We also provide an example, showing that Hall subgroups in finite groups are not pronormal in general.
A subgroup $H$ of a group $G$ is said to be {pronormal} in $G$ if $H$ and $H^g$ are conjugate in $\langle H, H^g \rangle$ for every $g \in G$. Some problems in finite group theory, combinatorics, and permutation group theory were solved in terms of pronormality. In 2012, E. Vdovin and the third author conjectured that the subgroups of odd index are pronormal in finite simple groups. In this paper we disprove their conjecture and discuss a recent progress in the classification of finite simple groups in which the subgroups of odd index are pronormal.
A subgroup $H$ of a group $G$ is said to be pronormal in $G$ if $H$ and $H^g$ are conjugate in $\langle H, H^g\rangle$ for every element $g \in G$. In [Sib. Math. J. 2015. Vol. 56, no. 6] we proved that subgroups of odd indeces are pronormal in many finite simple group. In [Proc. Steklov Inst. Math., to appear] we proved that a group $PSp_{6n}(q)$ with $q \equiv \pm 3 \pmod 8$ contains a nonpronormal subgroup of odd index. In this paper we prove that if $n \not \in \{2^m, 2^m(2^{2k}+1) \mid m, k \in \mathbb{N} \cup \{0\}\}$ then a group $PSp_{2n}(q)$ with $q \equiv \pm 3 \pmod 8$ contains a no…
Let $π$ be a set of primes. According to H. Wielandt, a subgroup $H$ of a finite group $X$ is called a $π$-submaximal subgroup if there is a monomorphism $ϕ:X\rightarrow Y$ into a finite group $Y$ such that $X^ϕ$ is subnormal in $Y$ and $H^ϕ=K\cap X^ϕ$ for a $π$-maximal subgroup $K$ of $Y$. In his talk at the well-known conference on finite groups in Santa-Cruz (USA) in 1979, Wielandt posed a series of open questions and among them the following problem: to describe the $π$-submaximal subgroup of the minimal nonsolvable groups and to study properties of such subgroups: the pronormality, the in…
In the note we prove that all composition factors of a finite group possessing a Carter subgroup of odd order either are abelain, or are isomorphic to $L_2(3^{2n+1})$.
We prove that every noncyclic subgroup of a free $m$-generator Burnside group $B(m,n)$ of odd exponent $n \gg 1$ contains a subgroup $H$ isomorphic to a free Burnside group $B(\infty,n)$ of exponent $n$ and countably infinite rank such that for every normal subgroup $K$ of $H$ the normal closure $<K >^{B(m,n)}$ of $K$ in $B(m,n)$ meets $H$ in $K$. This implies that every noncyclic subgroup of $B(m,n)$ is SQ-universal in the class of groups of exponent $n$.
A subgroup $H$ of a group $G$ is said to be pronormal in $G$ if $H$ and $H^g$ are conjugate in $\langle H, H^g \rangle$ for every $g \in G$. In this paper we classify finite simple groups $E_6(q)$ and ${}^2E_6(q)$ in which all the subgroups of odd index are pronormal. Thus, we complete a classification of finite simple exceptional groups of Lie type in which all the subgroups of odd index are pronormal.
We give a criterion for a finitely generated odd-angled Coxeter group to have a proper finite index subgroup generated by reflections. The answer is given in terms of the least prime divisors of the exponents of the Coxeter relations.
A classification of maximal subgroups of odd index in finite simple groups was given by Liebeck and Saxl and, independently, Kantor in 1980s. In the cases of alternating groups or classical groups of Lie type over fields of odd characteristics, the classification was not complete. The classification was completed by the author in 2008. In the cases of finite simple classical groups of Lie type we used results obtained in Kleidman's PhD thesis. However there is a number of flaws in this PhD thesis. The flaws were corrected by Bray, Holt, and Roney-Dougal in 2013. In this note we provide a revis…
A finite group $G$ is called monomial if every irreducible character of $G$ is induced from a linear character of some subgroup of $G$. One of the main questions regarding monomial groups is whether or not a normal subgroup $N$ of a monomial group $G$ is itself monomial. In the case that $G$ is a group of even order, it has been proved (Dade, van der Waall) that $N$ need not be monomial. Here we show that, if $G$ is a monomial group of order $p^aq^b$, where $p$ and $q$ are distinct odd primes, then any normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ is also monomial.
We prove that an isomorphism between saturated fusion systems over the same finite p-group is detected on the elementary abelian subgroups of the hyperfocal subgroup if p is odd, and on the abelian subgroups of the hyperfocal subgroup of exponent at most 4 if p = 2. For odd p, this has implications for mod p group cohomology.
In the spirit of Glauberman's fundamental work in B-loops and Moufang loops, we prove Cauchy and strong Lagrange theorems for Bol loops of odd order. We also establish necessary conditions for the existence of a simple Bol loop of odd order, conditions which should be useful in the development of a Feit-Thompson theorem for Bol loops. Bol loops are closely related to Aschbacher's twisted subgroups, and we survey the latter in some detail, especially with regard to the so-called Aschbacher radical.
Let $G$ be a finite group of odd order, $\F$ a finite field of odd characteristic $p$ and $\B$ a finite--dimensional symplectic $\F G$-module. We show that $\B$ is $\F G$-hyperbolic, i.e., it contains a self--perpendicular $\F G$-submodule, iff it is $\F N$-hyperbolic for every cyclic subgroup $N$ of $G$.
In this paper we investigate the structure of finite $p$-groups with the property that every subgroup of index $p^i$ is powerful for some $i$. For odd primes $p$, we show that under certain conditions these groups must be potent. Then, motivated by a question of Mann, we investigate in detail the case when all maximal subgroups are powerful. We show that for odd $p$ any finite $p$-group $G$ with all maximal subgroups powerful has a regular power structure - with precisely one exceptional case which is a $3$-group of maximal class and order $81$. To show this counterexample is unique we use a c…
We study finite groups which possess a strongly p-embedded subgroup for some odd prime p. The main results of the paper will be applied in the ongoing project to classify the simple groups of local characteristic p.
We consider an amalgam of groups constructed from fusion systems for different odd primes p and q. This amalgam contains a self-normalizing cyclic subgroup of order pq and isolated elements of order p and q.
We construct the first examples of finitely presented groups with cubic Dehn function containing a finitely generated infinite torsion subgroup. Moreover, we show that any infinite free Burnside group with sufficiently large odd exponent can be embedded as a subgroup of a finitely presented group with cubic Dehn function.
If every element of a matrix group is similar to a permutation matrix, then it is called a permutation-like matrix group. References [4] and [5] showed that, if a permutation-like matrix group contains a maximal cycle of length equal to a prime or a square of a prime and the maximal cycle generates a normal subgroup, then it is similar to a permutation matrix group. In this paper, we prove that if a permutation-like matrix group contains a maximal cycle of length equal to any power of any odd prime and the maximal cycle generates a normal subgroup, then it is similar to a permutation matrix gr…
The paper contains versions of the Strong Embedding Theorem and the Uniqueness Subgroup Theorem for groups of finite Morley rank and odd type which are needed for the study of permutations actions and modules in the finite Morley rank category.
Suppose that p is an odd prime and G is a finite group having no normal non-trivial p'-subgroup. We show that if a is an automorphism of G of p-power order centralizing a Sylow p-group of G, then a is inner. This answers a conjecture of Gross. An easy corollary is that if p is an odd prime and P is a Sylow p-subgroup of G, then the center of P is contained in the generalized Fitting subgroup of G. We give two proofs both requiring the classification of finite simple groups. For p=2, the result fails but Glauberman in 1968 proved that the square of a is inner. This answered a problem of Kourovk…
We determine, for $p$ odd, all saturated fusion systems on a Sylow $p$-subgroup $S$ of the unitary group $SU_4(p)$ and we prove that they are all realizable by finite groups. In particular, we prove that $S$ does not support any exotic fusion systems.
In this note we show that if $p$ is an odd prime and $G$ is a powerful $p$-group with $N\leq G^{p}$ and $N$ normal in $G$, then $N$ is powerfully nilpotent. An analogous result is proved for $p=2$ when $N\leq G^{4}$.
A group $G$ is said to be cut if, for every $g \in G$, each generator of $< \! g \! >$ is conjugated to either $g$ or $g^{-1}$. It is conjectured that a Sylow 3-subgroup $P$ of a cut group $G$ is cut. We prove that this is true if $|G|$ is odd.
In this note, we show that among finite nilpotent groups of a given order or finite groups of a given odd order, the cyclic group of that order has the minimum number of edges in its cyclic subgroup graph. We also conjecture that this holds for arbitrary finite groups.
Let $P$ be a finite $p$-group and $p$ be an odd prime. Let $\mathcal{A}_p(P)_{\geq2}$ be a poset consisting of elementary abelian subgroups of rank at least 2. If the derived subgroup $P'\cong C_p\times C_p$, then the spheres occurring in $\mathcal{A}_p(P)_{\geq2}$ all have the same dimension.
For the black box groups $X$ encrypting ${\rm{PGL}}_2(q)$, $q$ odd, we propose an algorithm constructing a subgroup encrypting ${\rm{Sym}}_4$ and subfield subgroups of $X$. We also present the analogous algorithms for black box groups encrypting ${\rm{(P)SL}}_2(q)$.
We consider the structure of a finite groups having a normal series whose factors have bicyclic Sylow subgroups. In particular, we investigated groups of odd order and $A_4$-free groups with this property. Exact estimations of the derived length and nilpotent length of such groups are obtained.
In 1974, Helmut Wielandt proved that in a finite group $G$, a subgroup $A$ is subnormal if and only if it is subnormal in every $\seq{A,g}$ for all $g\in G$. In this paper, we prove that the subnormality of an odd order nilpotent subgroup $A$ of $G$ is already guaranteed by a seemingly weaker condition: $A$ is subnormal in $G$ if for every conjugacy class $C$ of $G$ there exists $c\in C$ for which $A$ is subnormal in $\seq{A,c}$. We also prove the following property of finite non-abelian simple groups: if $A$ is a subgroup of odd prime order $p$ in a finite almost simple group $G$, then there …
Given a regular subgroup R of AGL_n(F), one can ask if R contains nontrivial translations. A negative answer to this question was given by Liebeck, Praeger and Saxl for AGL_2(p) (p a prime), AGL_3(p) (p odd) and for AGL_4(2). A positive answer was given by Hegedus for AGL_n(p) when n >= 4 if p is odd and for n=3 or n >= 5 if p=2. A first generalization to finite fields of Hegedus' construction was recently obtained by Catino, Colazzo and Stefanelli. In this paper we give examples of such subgroups in AGL_n(F) for any n >= 5 and any field F. For n < 5 we provide necessary and sufficient conditi…
In this paper we prove that any strongly embedded subgroup of a K*-group G of finite Morley rank and odd type that does not interpret any bad field is solvable if its Pruefer 2-rank is at least 2. If the normal 2-rank of G is at least 3 this has two important consequences: If G contains a non-solvable centraliser of an involution, then G does not contain any proper 2-generated core and centralisers of involutions have trivial cores.
We present a one sided Monte--Carlo algorithm which constructs a long root $\sl_2(q)$-subgroup in $X/O_p(X)$, where $X$ is a black-box group and $X/O_p(X)$ is a finite simple group of Lie type defined over a field of odd order $q=p^k > 3$ for some $k\geqslant 1$. Our algorithm is based on the analysis of the structure of centralizers of involutions and can be viewed as a computational version of Aschbacher's Classical Involution Theorem. We also present an algorithm which determines whether the $p$-core (or "unipotent radical") $O_p(X)$ of a black-box group $X$ is trivial or not, where $X/O_p(…
A Grigorchuk-Gupta-Sidki (GGS-)group is a subgroup of the automorphism group of the $p$-adic tree for an odd prime $p$, generated by one rooted automorphism and one directed automorphism. Pervova proved that all torsion GGS-groups do not have maximal subgroups of infinite index. Here we extend the result to non-torsion GGS-groups, which include the weakly regular branch, but not branch, GGS-group.
We consider the question: When do two finite abelian groups have isomorphic lattices of characteristic subgroups? An explicit description of the characteristic subgroups of such groups enables us to give a complete answer to this question in the case where at least one of the groups has odd order. An "exceptional" isomorphism, which occurs between the lattice of characteristic subgroups of $Z_p\times Z_{p^2}\times Z_{p^4}$ and $Z_{p^2} \times Z_{p^5}$, for any prime $p$, is noteworthy.
In this article we determine the number of isotopic classes of transversals of a subgroup of order 2 in $ D_{2n}$ ($n$ is a positive odd integer greater than 1), where isotopism classes are formed with respect to the induced right loop structures. We also determine the cyclic index of the Affine group Aff$(1,p^{2})$, where $p$ is an odd prime.
Let $G$ be a finite group of odd order admitting an involutory automorphism $ϕ$. We obtain two results bounding the exponent of $[G,ϕ]$. Denote by $G_{-ϕ}$ the set $\{[g,ϕ]\,\vert\, g\in G\}$ and by $G_ϕ$ the centralizer of $ϕ$, that is, the subgroup of fixed points of $ϕ$. The obtained results are as follows.1. Assume that the subgroup $\langle x,y\rangle$ has derived length at most $d$ and $x^e=1$ for every $x,y\in G_{-ϕ}$. Suppose that $G_ϕ$ is nilpotent of class $c$. Then the exponent of $[G,ϕ]$ is $(c,d,e)$-bounded.2. Assume that $G_ϕ$ has rank $r$ and $x^e=1$ for each $x\in G_{-ϕ}$. Then…
For $S$ a Sylow $p$-subgroup of the group $\mathrm{G}_2(p)$ for $p$ odd, up to isomorphism of fusion systems, we determine all saturated fusion systems $\mathcal{F}$ on $S$ with $O_p(\mathcal{F})=1$. For $p \ne 7$, all such fusion systems are realized by finite groups whereas for $p=7$ there are $29$ saturated fusion systems of which $27$ are exotic.
Let $p$ be an odd prime, and let $S$ be a $p$-group with a unique elementary abelian subgroup $A$ of index $p$. We classify the simple fusion systems over all such groups $S$ in which $A$ is essential. The resulting list, which depends on the classification of finite simple groups, includes a large variety of new, exotic simple fusion systems.
For a finite group $G$ we investigate the difference between the maximum size MaxDim$(G)$ of an "independent" family of maximal subgroups of $G$ and maximum size $m(G)$ of an irredundant sequence of generators of $G$. We prove that MaxDim$(G)=m(G)$ if the derived subgroup of $G$ is nilpotent. However MaxDim$(G)-m(G)$ can be arbitrarily large: for any odd prime $p,$ we construct a finite soluble group with Fitting length 2 satisfying $m(G)=3$ and MaxDim$(G)=p.$
Let $q$ be an odd prime power, $n > 1$, and let $P$ denote a maximal parabolic subgroup of $GL_n(q)$ with Levi subgroup $GL_{n-1}(q) \times GL_1(q)$. We restrict the odd-degree irreducible characters of $GL_n(q)$ to $P$ to discover a natural correspondence of characters, both for $GL_n(q)$ and $SL_n(q)$. A similar result is established for certain finite groups with self-normalizing Sylow $p$-subgroups. We also construct a canonical bijection between the odd-degree irreducible characters of $S_n$ and those of $M$, where $M$ is any maximal subgroup of $S_n$ of odd index; as well as between the …
We construct the first examples of finitely presented groups with quadratic Dehn function containing a finitely generated infinite torsion subgroup. These examples are "optimal" in the sense that the Dehn function of any such finitely presented group must be at least quadratic. Moreover, we show that for any $n\geq2^{48}$ such that $n$ is either odd or divisible by $2^9$, any infinite free Burnside group with exponent $n$ is a quasi-isometrically embedded subgroup of a finitely presented group with quadratic Dehn function satisfying the Congruence Extension Property.
A finite $p$-group $G$ is called \textit{powerful} if either $p$ is odd and $[G,G]\subseteq G^p$ or $p=2$ and $[G,G]\subseteq G^4$. A {\em{cover}} for a group is a collection of subgroups whose union is equal to the entire group. We will discuss covers of $p$-groups by powerful $p$-subgroups. The size of the smallest cover of a $p$-group by powerful $p$-subgroups is called the \textit{powerful covering number}. In this paper we determine the powerful covering number of the dihedral 2-groups.
Let $G$ be an odd order nilpotent group with class 2 and $e$ denotes the exponent of its commutator subgroup. Let $e=p_1^{r_1}p_2^{r_2}... p_s^{r_s}$, where $p_i$'s are odd primes and $r_i$'s are non-negative integers. Then there are at least $r_1+r_2+... +r_s$ non-isomorphic nilpotent groups with class two and the order of each of the group is equal to the order of $G$.
Let G be a powerful finite p-group. In this note, we give a short elementary proof of the following facts for all $i\ge 0$: (i) $\exp Ω_-i(G)\le p^i$ for odd p, and $\exp Ω_-i(G)\le 2^{i+1}$ for p = 2; (ii) the index $|G:G^{p^i}|$ coincides with the number of elements of G of order at most $p^i$.
