Given a regular subgroup R of AGL_n(F), one can ask if R contains nontrivial translations. A negative answer to this question was given by Liebeck, Praeger and Saxl for AGL_2(p) (p a prime), AGL_3(p) (p odd) and for AGL_4(2). A positive answer was given by Hegedus for AGL_n(p) when n >= 4 if p is odd and for n=3 or n >= 5 if p=2. A first generalization to finite fields of Hegedus' construction was recently obtained by Catino, Colazzo and Stefanelli. In this paper we give examples of such subgroups in AGL_n(F) for any n >= 5 and any field F. For n < 5 we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for their existence, assuming R to be unipotent if char F=0.
The following results are proved: The center of any finite index subgroup of an irreducible, infinite, non-affine Coxeter group is trivial; Any finite index subgroup of an irreducible, infinite, non-affine Coxeter group cannot be expressed as a product of two nontrivial subgroups. These two theorems imply a unique decomposition theorem for a class of Coxeter groups. We also obtain that the orbit of each element other than the identity under the conjugation action in an irreducible, infinite, non-affine Coxeter group is an infinite set. This implies that an irreducible, infinite Coxeter group i…
This paper is a new contribution to the study of regular subgroups of the affine group $AGL_n(F)$, for any field $F$. In particular we associate to any partition $λ\neq (1^{n+1})$ of $n+1$ abelian regular subgroups in such a way that different partitions define non-conjugate subgroups. Moreover, we classify the regular subgroups of certain natural types for $n\leq 4$. Our classification is equivalent to the classification of split local algebras of dimension $n+1$ over $F$. Our methods, based on classical results of linear algebra, are computer free.
We discuss the classification of reflection subgroups of finite and affine Weyl groups from the point of view of their root systems. A short case free proof is given of the well known classification of the isomorphism classes of reflection subgroups using completed Dynkin diagrams, for which there seems to be no convenient source in the literature. This is used as a basis for treating the affine case, where finer classifications of reflection subgroups are given, and combinatorial aspects of root systems are shown to appear. Various parameter sets for certain types of subsets of roots are inte…
The affine general linear group acting on a vector space over a prime field is a well-understood mathematical object. Its elementary abelian regular subgroups have recently drawn attention in applied mathematics thanks to their use in cryptography as a way to hide or detect weaknesses inside block ciphers. This paper is focused on building a convenient representation of their elements which suits better the purposes of the cryptanalyst. Several combinatorial counting formulas and a classification of their conjugacy classes are given as well.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ and let $C/k$ be a smooth connected affine curve. Denote by $π_1(C)$ its algebraic fundamental group. The goal of this paper is to characterize a certain subset of closed normal subgroups $N$ of $π_1(C)$. In "Normal subgroups of fundamental groups of affine curves in positive characteristic" we proved the same result under the additional hypothesis that $k$ had countable cardinality.

Let $π_1(C)$ be the algebraic fundamental group of a smooth connected affine curve, defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ of countable cardinality. Let $N$ be a normal (resp. characteristic) subgroup of $π_1(C)$. Under the hypothesis that the quotient $π_1(C)/N$ admits an infinitely generated Sylow $p$-subgroup, we prove that $N$ is indeed isomorphic to a normal (resp. characteristic) subgroup of a free profinite group of countable cardinality. As a consequence, every proper open subgroup of $N$ is a free profinite group of countable cardinality.
For a Coxeter group $W$ we have an associating bi-linear form $B$ on a real vector space. We assume that $B$ has the signature $(n-1,1)$. In this case we have the Cannon-Thurston map for $W$, that is, a $W$-equivariant continuous surjection from the Gromov boundary of $W$ to the limit set of $W$. We focus on the case where Coxeter groups contain affine special subgroups.
We extend the notion of induced conjugacy classes in reductive groups, introduced by Lusztig and Spaltenstein for unipotent classes, to arbitrary classes. We study properties of equivariant fibrations of prehomogeneous affine spaces, especially the existence of relative invariants. We also detect prehomogeneous affine spaces as subquotients of canonical parabolic subgroups attached to elements of reductive groups in the sense of Jacobson-Morozov. These results are prerequisites for making the geometric expansion of the Arthur-Selberg trace formula more explicit.
We establish a link between abelian regular subgroup of the affine group, and commutative, associative algebra structures on the underlying vector space that are (Jacobson) radical rings. As an application, we show that if the underlying field has positive characteristic, then an abelian regular subgroup has finite exponent if the vector space is finite-dimensional, while it can be torsion free if the dimension is infinite. We also give an example of an abelian, regular subgroup of the affine group over an infinite vector space, which intersects trivially the group of translations.
Exploring Bass' Triangulability Problem on unipotent algebraic subgroups of the affine Cremona groups, we prove a triangulability criterion, the existence of nontriangulable connected solvable affine algebraic subgroups of the Cremona groups, and stable triangulability of such subgroups; in particular, in the stable range we answer Bass' Triangulability Problem is the affirmative. To this end we prove a theorem on invariant subfields of $1$-extensions. We also obtain a general construction of all rationally triangulable subgroups of the Cremona groups and, as an application, classify rationall…
The goal of this paper is to give a group-theoretic proof of the congruence subgroup property for $Aut(F_2)$, the group of automorphisms of a free group on two generators. This result was first proved by Asada using techniques from anabelian geometry, and our proof is, to a large extent, a translation of Asada's proof into group-theoretic language. This translation enables us to simplify many parts of Asada's original argument and prove a quantitative version of the congruence subgroup property for $Aut(F_2)$.
In 1967 L. Auslander conjectured that every crystallographic subgroup of an affine group is virtually solvable, i.e. contains a solvable subgroup of finite index. D. Fried and W. Goldman proved Auslander's conjecture for affine space of dimension 3 using cohomological arguments. Using dynamical arguments we prove the Auslander conjecture for dimension less than 7.
Bestvina, Feighn and Handel proved that every subgroup of the outer automorphism group, $\textrm{Out}(F_n)$, of the free group of rank $n$ is either virtually finitely generated abelian or contains a nonabelian free group. In this note we consider the more general situation of the outer automorphism group $\textrm{Out}(G)$ of a finitely generated free-by-finite group $G$. We show that $\textrm{Out}(G)$ is translation discrete and that every subgroup of $\textrm{Out}(G)$ is either virtually finitely generated abelian or contains a nonabelian free group.
We show a simple geometric procedure for an extension of a loop realized as the image $Σ^{\ast}$ of a sharply transitive section in a subgroup $G^{\ast}$ of the projective linear group $PGL(n-1, \mathbb K)$ to a loop realized as the image of a sharply transitive section in a group $Δ=T' \rtimes C$ of affinities of the $n$-dimensional space ${\cal A}_n=\mathbb K^n$ over a commutative field $\mathbb K$. We desire that $T'$ is a large subgroup of affine translations and that $α(C)=G^{\ast}$ holds for the canonical homomorphism $α:GL(n,\mathbb K) \to PGL(n, \mathbb K)$. We demonstrate that our con…
For the affine and hyperbolic root system the symmetric part of the centralizers of root subgroups in the corresponding Steinberg groups are calculated. In the affine case the corresponding root subsystems can be computed in term of the centralizers in the spherical root systems, while in the hyperbolic case there emerges a "zoo" of examples, many of them non-hyperbolic. This also delivers many examples of naturally occuring root subsystems of infinite rank.
Given a toric affine algebraic variety $X$ and a collection of one-parameter unipotent subgroups $U_1,\ldots,U_s$ of $\mathop{\rm Aut}(X)$ which are normalized by the torus acting on $X$, we show that the group $G$ generated by $U_1,\ldots,U_s$ verifies the following alternative of Tits' type: either $G$ is a unipotent algebraic group, or it contains a non-abelian free subgroup. We deduce that if $G$ is $2$-transitive on a $G$-orbit in $X$, then $G$ contains a non-abelian free subgroup, and so, is of exponential growth.
We prove that all elements of infinite order in $Out(F_n)$ have positive translation lengths; moreover, they are bounded away from zero. Consequences include a new proof that solvable subgroups of $Out(F_n)$ are finitely generated and virtually abelian and the new result that such subgroups are quasi-convex.
Let $G$ be a semisimple affine algebraic group defined over a field $k$ of characteristic zero. We describe all the maximal connected solvable subgroups of $G$, defined over $k$, up to conjugation by rational points of $G$.
Let $\text{AGL}(1,\Bbb F_q)$ denote the affine linear group of dimension one over the finite field $\Bbb F_q$. We determine the Möbius function of the lattice of subgroups of $\text{AGL}(1,\Bbb F_q)$.
For a second countable locally compact group $G$ and a closed abelian subgroup $H$, we give a range function classification of closed subspaces in $L^2(G)$ invariant under left translation by $H$. For a family $\mathscr{A} \subset L^2(G)$, this classification ties with a set of conditions under which the translations of $\mathscr{A}$ by $H$ form a continuous frame or a Riesz sequence. When $G$ is abelian, our work relies on a fiberization map; for the more general case, we introduce an analogue of the Zak transform. Both transformations intertwine translation with modulation, and both rely on …
Let $G$ be an affine group over a field of characteristic not two. A $G$-torsor is called isotropic if it admits reduction of structure to a proper parabolic subgroup of $G$. This definition generalizes isotropy of affine groups and involutions of central simple algebras. When does $G$ admit anisotropic torsors? Building on work of J. Tits, we answer this question for simple groups. We also give an answer for connected and semisimple $G$ under certain restrictions on its root system.
Let $Aut_{alg}(X)$ be the subgroup of the group of regular automorphisms $Aut(X)$ of an affine algebraic variety $X$ generated by all connected algebraic subgroups. We prove that if $dim X \ge 2$ and if $Aut_{alg}(X)$ is rich enough, $Aut_{alg}(X)$ is not linear, i.e., it cannot be embedded into $GL_n(K)$, where $K$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Moreover, $Aut(X)$ is isomorphic to an algebraic group as an abstract group only if the connected component of $Aut(X)$ is either the algebraic torus or a direct limit of commutative unipotent groups. Finally, we prove that f…
Let $N$ be a normal subgroup of a finite group $G$ and $V$ be a fixed finite-dimensional $G$-module. The Poincaré series for the multiplicities of induced modules and restriction modules in the tensor algebra $T(V)=\oplus_{k \geq 0}V^{\otimes k}$ are studied in connection with the McKay-Slodowy correspondence. In particular, it is shown that the closed formulas for the Poincaré series associated with the distinguished pairs of subgroups of $\mathrm{SU}_2$ give rise to the exponents of all untwisted and twisted affine Lie algebras except ${\rm A}_{2n}^{(1)}$.
We introduce the discrete affine group of a regular tree as a finitely generated subgroup of the affine group. We describe the Poisson boundary of random walks on it as a space of configurations. We compute isoperimetric profile and Hilbert compression exponent of the group. We also discuss metric relationship with some lamplighter groups and lamplighter graphs.
We show that for a parabolic quasi-Coxeter element in an affine Coxeter group the Hurwitz action on its set of reduced factorizations into a product of reflections is transitive. We call an element of the Coxeter group parabolic quasi-Coxeter element if it has a reduced factorization into a product of reflections that generate a parabolic subgroup.
We give a new proof that compact infra-solvmanifolds with isomorphic fundamental groups are smoothly diffeomorphic. More generally, we prove rigidity results for manifolds which are constructed using affine actions of virtually polycyclic groups on solvable Lie groups. Our results are derived from rigidity properties of subgroups in solvable linear algebraic groups.
This paper is motivated by several combinatorial actions of the affine Weyl group of type $C_n$. Addressing a question of David Vogan, it was shown in an earlier paper that these permutation representations are essentialy multiplicity-free~\cite{arXiv:2009.13880}. However, the Gelfand trick, which was indispensable in~\cite{arXiv:2009.13880} to prove this property for types $C_n$ and $B_n$, is not applicable for other classical types. Here we present a unified approach to fully answer the analogous question for all irreducible affine Weyl groups. Given a finite Weyl group $W$ with maximal para…
We quantify the generation of free subgroups of surface mapping class groups by pseudo-Anosov mapping classes in terms of their translation distance and the distance between their axes. Our methods make reference to \teichmuller space only.
We explore algebraic subgroups of of the Cremona group $\mathcal C_n$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. First, we consider some class of algebraic subgroups of $\mathcal C_n$ that we call flattenable. It contains all tori. Linearizability of the natural rational actions of flattenable subgroups on the affine space $\An$ is intimately related to rationality of the invariant fields and, for tori, is equivalent to it. We prove stable linearizability of these actions and show the existence of nonlinearizable actions among them. This is applied to exploring maximal tori in …
Given a linear group G over a field k, we define a notion of index and residue of an element g of G(k((t)). This provides an alternative proof of Gabber's theorem stating that G has no subgroups isomorphic to the additive or the commutative group iff G(k[[t]])= G(k((t))). In the case of a reductive group, we offer an explicit connection with the theory of affine grassmannians.
We study the possibility of applying a finite-dimensionality argument in order to address parts of the Baum-Connes conjecture for finitely generated linear groups. This gives an alternative approach to the results of Guentner, Higson, and Weinberger concerning the Baum-Connes conjecture for linear groups. For any finitely generated linear group over a field of characteristic zero we construct a proper action on a finite-asymptotic-dimensional CAT(0)-space, provided that for such a group its unipotent subgroups have `bounded composition rank'. The CAT(0)-space in our construction is a finite pr…
We classify the finite primitive permutation groups which have a cyclic subgroup with two orbits. This extends classical topics in permutation group theory, and has arithmetic consequences. By a theorem of C. L. Siegel, affine algebraic curves with infinitely many integral points are parametrized by rational functions whose monodromy groups have this property. We classify the possibilities of these monodromy groups, and give an application to Hilbert's irreducibility theorem.
Let S be a smooth affine algebraic curve, and let S' be the Riemann surface obtained by removing a point from S. We provide evidence for the congruence subgroup property of the mapping class group Mod(S') by showing that its congruence kernel lies in the centralizer of every braid in Mod(S'). As a corollary, we obtain a new proof of Asada's theorem that the congruence subgroup property holds in genus one. We also obtain simple-connectivity of Boggi's procongruence curve complex for curves with at least two punctures, as well as a new proof of Matsumoto's theorem that the congruence kernel depe…
It is well known that if $G$ admits a f.g. subgroup $H$ with a weaklyaperiodic SFT (resp. an undecidable domino problem), then $G$itself has a weakly aperiodic SFT (resp. an undecidable domino problem). We prove that we can replace the property "$H$ is a subgroup of $G$"by "$H$ acts translation-like on $G$", provided $H$ is finitely presented. In particular:* If $G\_1$ and $G\_2$ are f.g. infinite groups, then $G\_1 \times G\_2$ has a weakly aperiodic SFT (and actually a undecidable domino problem). In particular the Grigorchuk group has an undecidable domino problem. * Every infinite f.g. $p$-g…
Let $G$ be either a profinite or a connected compact group, and $Γ, Λ$ be finitely generated dense subgroups. Assuming that the left translation action of $Γ$ on $G$ is strongly ergodic, we prove that any cocycle for the left-right translation action of $Γ\timesΛ$ on $G$ with values in a countable group is virtually cohomologous to a group homomorphism. Moreover, we prove that the same holds if $G$ is a (not necessarily compact) connected simple Lie group provided that $Λ$ contains an infinite cyclic subgroup with compact closure. We derive several applications to OE - and W$^*$- superrigidity…
