In this article, we study local zeta functions over non-Archimedean locals fields of arbitrary characteristic attached to rational functions and characters $χ$ of the units of the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{K}$, by using an approach based on the multivariate $π$-adic stationary phase formula and Newton polyhedra. When the rational function is non-degenerate with respect to its Newton polyhedron, we give an explicit formula for the local zeta function and a list of the possible poles in terms of the normal vectors of the supporting hyperplanes of the Newton polyhedron attached to the rational function and their expected multiplicities. Furthermore, we obtain some conditions under which the local zeta function attached to the trivial character has at least one real pole by describing the largest negative real pole and the smallest positive one.
We compute the Archimedean doubling zeta integrals which appear in the interpolation formulas for the p-adic L-functions of Siegel modular forms, and verify that they agree with the modified Archimedean Euler factors for p-adic interpolation conjectured by Coates--Perrin-Riou.
In this article we introduce a new type of local zeta functions and study some connections with pseudodifferential operators in the framework of non-Archimedean fields. The new local zeta functions are defined by integrating complex powers of norms of polynomials multiplied by infinitely pseudo-differentiable functions. In characteristic zero, the new local zeta functions admit meromorphic continuations to the whole complex plane, but they are not rational functions. The real parts of the possible poles have a description similar to the poles of Archimedean zeta functions. But they can be irra…
In this article, we give explicit formulas of archimedean Whittaker functions on $GL(3)$ and $GL(2)$. Moreover, we apply those to the calculation of archimedean zeta integrals for $GL(3)\times GL(2)$, and show that the zeta integral for appropriate Whittaker functions is equal to the associated $L$-factors.
In this paper, we evaluate archimedean zeta integrals for automorphic $L$-functions on $GL_n \times GL_{n-1+\ell}$ and on $ SO_{2n+1} \times GL_{n+\ell}$, for $\ell=-1$, $0$, and $1$. In each of these cases, the zeta integrals in question may be expressed as Mellin transforms of products of class one Whittaker functions. Here, we obtain explicit expressions for these Mellin transforms in terms of Gamma functions and Barnes integrals.
The numerical data of an embedded resolution determine the candidate poles of Igusa's p-adic zeta function. We determine in complete generality which real candidate poles are actual poles in the curve case.
By studying an explicit form of the Eichler--Shimura map for ${\rm GL}_3$, we describe a precise relation between critical values of the complete $L$-function for the Rankin--Selberg convolution ${\rm GL}_3 \times {\rm GL}_2$ and the cohomological cup product of certain rational cohomology classes which are uniquely determined up to rational scalar multiples from the cuspidal automorphic representations under consideration. This refines rationality results on critical values due to Raghuram et al.
The aim of this paper is to describe explicitly the poles of the meromorphic continuation of the Igusa local zeta function associated to several polynomials. Using resolution of singularities is possible to express the Igusa's local zeta function as a finite sum of p-adic monomial integrals. We compute these monomial integrals using techniques of toroidal geometry. In this way, we obtain an explicit list for the candidates to poles of the local zeta function associated to several polynomials.
Let K be a p-adic field. We explore Igusa's p-adic zeta function, which is associated to a K-analytic function on an open and compact subset of K^n. First we deduce a formula for an important coefficient in the Laurent series of this meromorphic function at a candidate pole. Afterwards we use this formula to determine all values less than -1/2 for n=2 and less than -1 for n=3 which occur as the real part of a pole.
In this paper we provide a geometric description of the possible poles of the Igusa local zeta function associated to an analytic mapping and a locally constant function, in terms of a log-principalizaton of an ideal naturally attached to the mapping. Typically our new method provides a much shorter list of possible poles compared with the previous methods. We determine the largest real part of the poles of the Igusa zeta function, and then as a corollary, we obtain an asymptotic estimation for the number of solutions of an arbitrary system of polynomial congruences in terms of the log-canonic…
Let K be a p-adic field, R the valuation ring of K, P the maximal ideal of R and q the cardinality of the residue field R/P. Let f be a polynomial over R in n>1 variables and let χbe a character of R^{\times}. Let M_i(u) be the number of solutions of f=u in (R/P^i)^n for i \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0} and u \in R/P^i. These numbers are related with Igusa's p-adic zeta function Z_{f,χ}(s) of f. We explain the connection between the M_i(u) and the smallest real part of a pole of Z_{f,χ}(s). We also prove that M_i(u) is divisible by q^{\ulcorner(n/2)(i-1)\urcorner}, where the corners indicate that we …
While the existence of a unique Kähler-Einstein metric on a canonically polarized manifold X was established by Aubin and Yau already in the 70s there are only a few explicit formulas available. In previous work a probabilistic construction of the Kähler-Einstein metric was introduced - involving canonical random point processes on X - which yields canonical approximations of the Kähler-Einstein metric, expressed as explicit period integrals over a large number of products of X. Here it is shown that the conjectural extension to the case when X is a Fano variety suggests a zero-free property o…
The main objective of this paper is to prove the monodromy conjecture for the local Igusa zeta function of a quasi-ordinary polynomial of arbitrary dimension defined over a number field. In order to do it, we compute the local Denef-Loeser motivic zeta function $Z_{\text{DL}}(h,T)$ of a quasi-ordinary power series $h$ of arbitrary dimension over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero from its characteristic exponents without using embedded resolution of singularities. This allows us to effectively represent $Z_{\text{DL}}(h,T)=P(T)/Q(T)$ such that almost all the candidate poles g…
We show that the analytic continuations of Helson zeta functions $ ζ_χ(s)= \sum_1^{\infty}χ(n)n^{-s} $ can have essentially arbitrary poles and zeroes in the strip $ 21/40 < \Re s < 1 $ (unconditionally), and in the whole critical strip $ 1/2 < \Re s <1 $ under Riemann Hypothesis.
We investigate the relationship between the poles of Igusa zeta integrals and the unextendability of semi-invariant distributions. Under some algebraic conditions, we obtain an upper bound for the order of the poles of Igusa zeta integral, and by using the order of the poles we give a criterion on the unextendability of semi-invariant distributions. A key ingredient of our method is the idea of generalized semi-invariant distributions.
It is known that Shintani zeta functions, which generalise multiple zeta functions, extend to meromorphic functions with poles on affine hyperplanes. We refine this result in showing that the poles lie on hyperplanes parallel to the facets of certain convex polyhedra associated to the defining matrix for the Shintani zeta function. Explicitly, the latter are the Newton polytopes of the polynomials induced by the columns of the underlying matrix. We then prove that the coefficients of the equation which describes the hyperplanes in the canonical basis are either zero or one, similar to the pole…
Let F be a local non-archimedean field. We prove a formula relating orbital integrals in GL(n,F) (for the unit Hecke function) and the generating series counting ideals of a certain ring. Using this formula, we give an explicit estimate for such orbital integrals. We also derive an analogous formula for global fields, proving analytic properties of the Dedekind zeta function for orders in global fields.
In this paper, we study the Igusa's local zeta functions of a class of hybrid polynomials with coefficients in a non-archimedean local field of positive characteristic. Such class of hybrid polynomial was first introduced by Hauser in 2003 to study the resolution of singularities in positive characteristic. We prove the rationality of these local zeta functions and describe explicitly their poles. The proof is based on Igusa's stationary phase formula.
We introduce the zeta function of the prehomogenous vector space of binary cubic forms, twisted by the real analytic Eisenstein series. We prove the meromorphic continuation of this zeta function and identify its poles and their residues. We also identify the poles and residues of the zeta function when restricted to irreducible binary cubic forms. This zeta function can be used to prove the equidistribution of the lattice shape of cubic rings.
We study the twisted local zeta function associated to a polynomial in two variables with coefficients in a non-Archimedean local field of arbitrary characteristic. Under the hypothesis that the polynomial is arithmetically non degenerate, we obtain an explicit list of candidates for the poles in terms of geometric data obtained from a family of arithmetic Newton polygons attached to the polynomial. The notion of arithmetical non degeneracy due to Saia and Zúñiga-Galindo is weaker than the usual notion of non degeneracy due to Kouchnirenko. As an application we obtain asymptotic expansions for…
In the 70's Igusa developed a uniform theory for local zeta functions and oscillatory integrals attached to polynomials with coefficients in a local field of characteristic zero. In the present article this theory is extended to the case of rational functions, or, more generally, meromorphic functions f/g, with coefficients in a local field of characteristic zero. This generalization is far from being straightforward due to the fact that several new geometric phenomena appear. Also, the oscillatory integrals have two different asymptotic expansions: the 'usual' one when the norm of the paramet…
For a nonzero ideal I of C[x_1,...,x_n], with 0 in supp I, a generalization of a conjecture of Igusa - Denef - Loeser predicts that every pole of its topological zeta function is a root of its Bernstein-Sato polynomial. However, typically only a few roots are obtained this way. Following ideas of Veys, we study the following question. Is it possible to find a collection G of polynomials g in C[x_1,...,x_n], such that, for all g in G, every pole of the topological zeta function associated to I and the volume form gdx on the affine n-space, is a root of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of I, and su…
Picking binomial coefficients which cannot be divided by a given prime from Pascal's triangle, we find that they form a set with self-similarity. Essouabri studied on a class of meromorphic functions associated to the above set. These functions are related to fractal geometry and it is a problem whether such a function has a non-real pole on its axis of absolute convergence. Essouabri gave a proof of existence of such a non-real pole in the simplest case. The keys of his proof are Stein's and Wilson's estimates on how fast the points multiply in Pascal's triangle modulo a prime. This article w…
This paper is dedicated to the description of the poles of the Igusa local zeta functions $Z(s,f,v)$ when $f(x,y)$ satisfies a new non degeneracy condition, that we have called arithmetic non degeneracy. More precisely, we attach to each polynomial $f(x,y)$, a collection of convex sets $Γ^{A}$ called the arithmetic Newton polygon of $f(x,y)$, and introduce the notion of arithmetic non degeneracy with respect to $Γ^{A}(f)$. The set of degenerate polynomials, with respect to a fixed geometric Newton polygon, contains an open subset, for the Zariski topology, formed by non degenerate polynomials …
Motohashi established an explicit identity between the fourth moment of the Riemann zeta function weighted by some test function and a spectral cubic moment of automorphic L-functions. By an entirely different method, we prove a generalization of this formula to a fourth moment of Dirichlet L-functions modulo q weighted by a non-archimedean test function. This establishes a new reciprocity formula. As an application, we obtain sharp upper bounds for the fourth moment twisted by the square of a Dirichlet polynomial of length q^{1/4}. An auxiliary result of independent interest is a sharp upper …
Let $K$ be a local field and $f(x)\in K[x]$ be a non-constant polynomial. When ${\rm char}K=0$, Igusa showed the local zeta function is a rational function. However, when ${\rm char}K>0$, the rationality of the local zeta function is unknown in general. In this paper, we study the local zeta functions for the so-called hybrid polynomials in three variables with coefficients in a non-archimedean local field of positive characteristic. These hybrid polynomials were first introduced by Hauser in 2003 to study the resolution of singularities in positive characteristic. We establish the rationality…
In this paper we prove that there exists a Zariski dense open subset U defined over the rationals Q in the space of all one-variable rational functions with arbitrary k poles of prescribed orders, such that for every geometric point f in U(Qbar)$, the L-function of the exponential sum of f at a prime p has Newton polygon approaching the Hodge polygon as p approaches infinity. As an application to algebraic geometry, we prove that the p-adic Newton polygon of the zeta function of a p-cover of the projective line totally ramified at arbitrary k points of prescribed orders has an asymptotic gener…
In this paper we define a continuous version of multiple zeta functions. They can be analytically continued to meromorphic functions on $\mathbb{C}^r$ with only simple poles at some special hyperplanes. The evaluations of these functions at positive integers (continuous multiple zeta values) satisfy the shuffle product. We give a detailed analysis about the depth structure of continuous multiple zeta values. There are also sum formulas for continuous multiple zeta values. Lastly we calculate some special continuous multiple zeta values in terms of special values of multiple polylogarithms.
This paper studies zeta functions of the form $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} χ(n) n^{-s}$, with $χ$ a completely multiplicative function taking only unimodular values. We denote by $σ(χ)$ the infimum of those $α$ such that the Dirichlet series $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} χ(n) n^{-s}$ can be continued meromorphically to the half-plane $\operatorname{Re} s>α$, and denote by $ζ_χ(s)$ the corresponding meromorphic function in $\operatorname{Re} s>σ(χ)$. We construct $ζ_χ(s)$ that have $σ(χ)\le 1/2$ and are universal for zero-free analytic functions on the half-critical strip $1/2<\operatorname{Re} s <1$, with zero…
The Stieltjes constants $γ_n(K)$ of a number field $K$ are the coefficients of the Laurent expansion of the Dedekind zeta function $ζ_K(s)$ at its pole $s=1$. In this paper, we establish a similar expression of $γ_n(K)$ as Stieltjes obtained in 1885 for $γ_n(\mathbb Q)$. We also study the signs of $γ_n(K)$.
A new method is devised for calculating the Igusa local zeta function $Z_f$ of a polynomial $f(x_1,\dots,x_n)$ over a $p$-adic field. This involves a new kind of generating function $G_f$ that is the projective limit of a family of generating functions, and contains more data than $Z_f$. This $G_f$ resides in an algebra whose structure is naturally compatible with operations on the underlying polynomials, facilitating calculation of local zeta functions. This new technique is used to expand significantly the set of quadratic polynomials whose local zeta functions have been calculated explicitl…
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field with a finite residue field. To a 2-dimensional finite complex $X_Γ$ arising as the quotient of the Bruhat-Tits building $X$ associated to $\Sp_4(F)$ by a discrete torsion-free cocompact subgroup $Γ$ of $\PGSp_4(F)$, associate the zeta function $Z(X_Γ, u)$ which counts geodesic tailless cycles contained in the 1-skeleton of $X_Γ$. Using a representation-theoretic approach, we obtain two closed form expressions for $Z(X_Γ, u)$ as a rational function in $u$. Equivalent statements for $X_Γ$ being a Ramanujan complex are given in terms of vertex, edge, and …
Two integral representations of q-analogues of the Hurwitz zeta function are established. Each integral representation allows us to obtain an analytic continuation including also a full description of poles and special values at non-positive integers of the q-analogue of the Hurwitz zeta function, and to study the classical limit of this q-analogue. All the discussion developed here is entirely different from the previous work in [4]
In this paper we define a symmetric zeta function. We show that it can be analytically continued to a meromorphic function on $\mathbb{C}^3$ with only simple poles at some special hyperplanes. We also calculate the value of a multiple residue at one special point. For a divergent multiple series, which can be viewed as the value of the symmetric zeta function at the point $(1,1,1)$, we give a very detailed analysis on its growth and we relate it to the classical Euler constant.
Let $K$ be a local field and $f(x)\in K[x]$ be a non-constant polynomial. The local zeta function $Z_f(s, χ)$ was first introduced by Weil, then studied in detail by Igusa. When ${\rm char}(K)=0$, Igusa proved that $Z_f(s, χ)$ is a rational function of $q^{-s}$ by using the resolution of singularities. Later on, Denef gave another proof of this remarkable result. However, if ${\rm char}(K)>0$, the question of rationality of $Z_f(s, χ)$ is still kept open. Actually, there are only a few known results so far. In this paper, we investigate the local zeta functions of two-variable polynomial $g(x,…
The theory of Ihara zeta functions is extended to non-compact arithmetic quotients of Bruhat-Tits trees. This new zeta function turns out to be a rational function, despite the infinite-dimensional setting. In general it has zeros and poles, in contrast to the compact case. The determinant formulas of Bass and Ihara hold true if one defines the determinant as limit of all finite principal minors. From this analysis, a prime geodesic theorem is derived, which, applied to special arithmetic groups, yields new asymptotic assertions on class numbers of orders in global fields.
Partial zeta functions of algebraic varieties over finite fields generalize the classical zeta function by allowing each variable to be defined over a possibly different extension field of a fixed finite field. Due to this extra variation their rationality is surprising, and even simple examples are delicate to compute. For instance, we give a detailed description of the partial zeta function of an affine curve where the number of unit poles varies, a property different from classical zeta functions. On the other hand, they do retain some properties similar to the classical case. To this end, …
For a positive irrational number $α,$ we study the ordinary Dirichlet series $ζ_α(s) = \sum\limits_{n\geq1} \lfloorαn\rfloor^{-s}$ and $S_α(s) = \sum\limits_{n\geq1} (\left\lceilαn\right\rceil - \left\lceil α(n-1)\right\rceil){n^{-s}}.$ We prove relations between them and $J_{\boldsymbolα}(s)=\sum\limits_{n\geq1}\left(\lbraceαn\rbrace-\frac{1}{2}\right)n^{-s}.$ Motivated by the previous work of Hardy and Littlewood, Hecke and others regarding $J_{\boldsymbolα},$ we show that $ζ_α$ and $S_α$ can be continued analytically beyond the imaginary axis except for a simple pole at $s=1.$ Based on the …
We show that the analytic continuations of Helson zeta functions $ ζ_χ(s)= \sum_1^{\infty}χ(n)n^{-s} $ can have essentially arbitrary poles and zeroes in the strip $ 21/40 < \Re s < 1 $ (unconditionally), and in the whole critical strip $ 1/2 < \Re s <1 $ under Riemann Hypothesis for the function $ χ$ taking values in cubic roots of unity. If the sets are symmetric with respect to the real axis, the same can be achieved with $ χ$ taking values $ \pm 1 $.
We provide a potential conceptual reason for the positivity of the Weil functional using the Hilbert space framework of the semi-local trace formula of the paper "Trace formula in noncommutative geometry and the zeros of the Riemann zeta function". (Selecta Math. 5 (1999), no. 1, 29--106). We explore in great details the simplest case of the single archimedean place. The root of the positivity is the trace of the scaling action compressed onto the orthogonal complement of the range of the cutoff projections associated to the cutoff in phase space, for cutoff parameter equal to 1. We express th…
In this paper we describe a remarkable new property of the self-adjoint extension W of the prolate spheroidal operator introduced in \cite{college98},\cite{CMbook}. The restriction of this operator to the interval J whose characteristic function commutes with it is well known, has discrete positive spectrum and is well understood. What we have discovered is that the restriction of W to the complement of J admits (besides a replica of the above positive spectrum) negative eigenvalues whose ultraviolet behavior reproduce that of the squares of zeros of the Riemann zeta function. Furthermore, the…
