A consistent functional calculus approach to the spectral theorem for strongly commuting normal operators on Hilbert spaces is presented. In contrast to the common approaches using projection-valued measures or multiplication operators, here the functional calculus is not treated as a subordinate but as the central concept. Based on five simple axioms for a "measurable functional calculus", the theory of such calculi is developed in detail, including spectral theory, uniqueness results and construction principles. Finally, the functional calculus form of the spectral theorem is stated and proved, with some proof variants being discussed.
We develop a functional calculus for $d$-tuples of non-commuting elements in a Banach algebra. The functions we apply are free analytic functions, that is nc functions that are bounded on certain polynomial polyhedra.
We compare various functional calculus properties of Ritt operators. We show the existence of a Ritt operator T : X --> X on some Banach space X with the following property: T has a bounded $\H^\infty$ functional calculus with respect to the unit disc $\D$ (that is, T is polynomially bounded) but T does not have any bounded $\H^\infty$ functional calculus with respect to a Stolz domain of $\D$ with vertex at 1. Also we show that for an R-Ritt operator, the unconditional Ritt condition of Kalton-Portal is equivalent to the existence of a bounded $\H^\infty$ functional calculus with respect to s…
Operator $k$-tone functions on an open interval of the real line, which are higher order extensions of operator monotone and convex functions, are characterized via certain inequalities for the real and imaginary parts of analytic functional calculus by those functions.
The extension of Hille-Phillips functional calculus of semigroup generators which leads to unbounded operators is considered. Connections of this calculus to Bochner-Phillips functional calculus are indicated. In particular, the multiplication rule and the composition rule are proved. Several examples are given.
In this article we give an approach to define continuous functional calculus for bounded quaternionic normal operators defined on a right quaternionic Hilbert space.
We build on the work by Davies, extending the Helffer-Sjöstrand Functional Calculus domain for semi-bounded operators on Banach spaces given a priori controlled growth of the resolvents. We employ Seeley's Extension Theorem to extend smooth functions on the half line to the whole line and thus indirectly define functions of these operators.
We prove a transference principle for general (i.e., not necessarily bounded) strongly continuous groups on Banach spaces. If the Banach space has the UMD property, the transference principle leads to estimates for the functional calculus of the group generator. In the Hilbert space case, the results cover classical theorems of McIntosh and Boyadzhiev-de Laubenfels; in the UMD case they are analogues of classical results by Hieber and Pruess. By using functional calculus methods, consequences for sectorial operators are derived. For instance it is proved, that every generator of a cosine funct…
We study functional calculus properties of $C_{0}$-groups on real interpolation spaces, using transference principles. We obtain interpolation versions of the classical transference principle for bounded groups and of a recent transference principle for unbounded groups. Then we show that each group generator on a Banach space has a bounded $H^{\infty}_{1}$-calculus on real interpolation spaces. Additional results are derived from this.
The extension of Hille-Phillips functional calculus of semigroup generators which leads to unbounded operators is given. Connections of this calculus to Bochner-Phillips functional calculus are indicated, and several examples are considered.
If X is a sequentially complete locally convex space, then a quotient bounded operator T is regular (in the sense of Waelbroeck) if and only if it is a bounded element (in the sense of Allan) of the algebra of quotient bounded operators on X. The classic functional calculus for the bounded operators on Banach space is generalized for such bounded operators. Also are studied some spectral propreties of the locally bounded operators.
In this paper, we introduce a parametric pseudodifferential calculus on noncommutative $n$-tori which is a natural nest for resolvents of elliptic pseudodifferential operators. Unlike in some previous approaches to parametric pseudodifferential calculi, our parametric pseudodifferential calculus contains resolvents of elliptic pseudodifferential operators that need not be differential operators. As an application we show that complex powers of positive elliptic pseudodifferential operators on noncommutative $n$-tori are pseudodifferential operators. This confirms a claim of Fathi-Ghorbanpour-K…
In this article, we get the spectral solution $\mathcal{P}_μ^{m}$ of operators $m(\mathcal{L}, -Δ_\mathfrak{z})$, the joint functional calculus of the sub-Laplacian and Laplacian on the centre of Métivier group. Then, we give some group-analogues of the Thomas-Stein-type restriction theorem, asserting the mix-norm boundness of the restriction operators $\mathcal{P}_μ^{m}$ for two classes of functions $m=(a^α+b^β)^γ$ and $m=(1+a^α+b^β)^γ$ with $α, β>0, γ\neq0$.
Spectral theory and functional calculus for unbounded self-adjoint operators on a Hilbert space are usually treated through von Neumann's Cayley transform. Based on ideas of Woronowicz, we redevelop this theory from the point of view of multiplier algebras and the so-called bounded transform (which establishes a bijective correspondence between closed operators and pure contractions). This also leads to a simple account of the affiliation relation between von Neumann algebras and self-adjoint operators.
In this paper we extend the $H^\infty$ functional calculus to quaternionic operators and to $n$-tuples of noncommuting operators using the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions and the associated functional calculus, called $S$-functional calculus. The $S$-functional calculus has two versions one for quaternionic-valued functions and one for Clifford algebra-valued functions and can be considered the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus based on slice hyperholomorphicity because it shares with it the most important properties. The $S$-functional calculus is based on the notion of $S$-spectru…
This note is a complement to Pusz--Woronowicz's works on functional calculus for two positive forms from the viewpoint of operator theory. Based on an elementary, self-contained and purely Hilbert space operator explanation of their functional calculus, we show that any operator connection type operations (including any operator perspectives) are captured by their functional calculus.
In this note, we show that if a Banach space X has a predual, then every bounded linear operator on X with a continuous functional calculus admits a bounded Borel functional calculus. A consequence of this is that on such a Banach space, the classes of finitely spectral and prespectral operators coincide. We also apply this result to give some sufficient conditions for an operator with an absolutely continuous functional calculus to admit a bounded Borel one.
The functional calculus of semigroup generators, based on the class of Bernstein functions in several variables is developed, the condition for holomorphy of semigroups, generated by operators which arisen in the calculus is given, and in the one-dimensional case the moment inequality for such operators is proved.
In the present note a functional calculus $ϕ\mapsto ϕ(A)$ for self-adjoint definitizable linear relation on Krein spaces is developed. This functional calculus is the proper analogue of $ϕ\mapsto \int ϕ\, dE$ in the Hilbert space situation. It also comprises the Spectral Theorem for self-adjoint definitizable operators on Krein spaces showing the existence of spectral projections.
In this paper we introduce the two possible formulations of the F-functional calculus which are based on the Fueter-Sce mapping theorem in integral form and we introduce the pseudo F-resolvent equation. In the case of dimension 3 we prove the F-resolvent equation and we study the analogue of the Riesz projectors associated with this calculus. The case of dimension 3 is also useful to study the quaternionic version of the F-functional calculus.
The main purpose of this work is the construction of an analytic functional calculus for Clifford operators, which are operators acting on certain modules over Clifford algebras. Unlike in some preceding works by other authors, we use a spectrum defined in the complex plane, and certain stem functions, analytic in neighborhoods of such a spectrum. The replacement of the slice regular functions, having values in a Clifford algebra, by analytic stem functions becomes possible because of an isomorphism induced by a Cauchy type transform, whose existence is proved in the first part of this work.
We consider a functional calculus for compact operators, acting on the singular values rather than the spectrum, which appears frequently in applied mathematics. Necessary and sufficient conditions for this singular value functional calculus to be Lipschitz-continuous with respect to the Hilbert-Schmidt norm are given. We also provide sharp constants.
The multidimensional functional calculus of semigroup generators, based on the class of Bernstein functions in several variables is developed, the spectral mapping theorems for joint spectra have been stated, the condition for holomorphy of semigroups, generated by operators which arises in the calculus is given, and the moment inequality for such operators is proved.
The Fueter-Sce-Qian mapping theorem is a two steps procedure to extend holomorphic functions of one complex variable to quaternionic or Clifford algebra-valued functions in the kernel of a suitable generalized Cauchy-Riemann operator. Using the Cauchy formula of slice monogenic functions it is possible to give the Fueter-Sce-Qian extension theorem an integral form and to define the $\mathcal{F}$-functional calculus for $n$-tuples of commuting operators. This functional calculus is defined on the $S$-spectrum but it generates a monogenic functional calculus in the spirit of McIntosh and collabo…
We discuss a new concept of definitizability of a normal operator on Krein spaces. For this new concept we develop a functional calculus $ϕ\mapsto ϕ(N)$ which is the proper analogue of $ϕ\mapsto \int ϕ\, dE$ in the Hilbert space situation.
We describe a closed operator functional calculus in Banach modules over the group algebra $L^1(\mathbb R)$ and illustrate its usefulness with a few applications. In particular, we deduce a spectral mapping theorem for operators in the functional calculus, which generalizes some of the known results. We also obtain an estimate for the spectrum of a perturbed differential operator in a certain class.
In this paper, we first prove that the S-spectrum of a bounded right quaternionic linear operator on a two-sided quaternionic Banach space is a union of the spectrum of some bounded linear operators on a complex Banach space. Furthermore, we show that the S-functional calculus is obtained by the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus for complex linear operators. We also give simple proofs of some already existing results.
In this paper, we present a new class of operators, which we name to be $n$-Ritt operators. This produces a discrete analogue of $n$-sectorial operators and generalizes the notion of Ritt operators. We develop a $H^\infty$-functional calculus for $n$-Ritt operators and prove an useful transference result. We also generalize the notions of quadratic functional calculus and $n$-$R$-Ritt operator and discuss some examples.
In this short note we use ideas from systems theory to define a functional calculus for infinitesimal generators of strongly continuous semigroups on a Hilbert space. Among others, we show how this leads to new proofs of (known) results in functional calculus.
The Fueter mapping theorem gives a constructive way to extend holomorphic functions of one complex variable to monogenic functions, i.e., null solutions of the generalized Cauchy-Riemann operator in $\mathbb{R}^4$, denoted by $\mathcal{D}$. This theorem is divided in two steps. In the first step a holomorphic function is extended to a slice hyperholomorphic function. The Cauchy formula for these type of functions is the starting point of the $S$-functional calculus. In the second step a monogenic function is obtained by applying the Laplace operator in four real variables, namely $ Δ$, to a sl…
The goal of the present paper is to introduce and study noncommutative Hardy spaces associated with the regular $Λ$-polyball, to develop a functional calculus on noncommutative Hardy spaces for the completely non-coisometric (c.n.c.) $k$-tuples in ${\bf B}_Λ(H)$, and to study the characteristic functions and the associated multi-analytic models for the c.n.c. elements in the regular $Λ$-polyball. In addition, we show that the characteristic function is a complete unitary invariant for the class of c.n.c. $k$-tuples in ${\bf B}_Λ(H)$. These results extend the corresponding classical results of …
This note deals with the boundedness of the $H^\infty$ functional calculus of Ritt operators $T$ and associated square function estimates. The purpose is to give a shorter, concise and slightly more general approach towards Le~Merdy's results [19] on this subject.
We present an approach to the spectrum and analytic functional calculus for quaternionic linear operators, following the corresponding results concerning the real linear operators. In fact, the construction of the analytic functional calculus for real linear operators can be refined to get a similar construction for quaternionic linear ones, in a classical manner, using a Riesz-Dunford-Gelfand type kernel, and considering spectra in the complex plane. A quaternionic joint spectrum for pairs of operators is also discussed, and an analytic functional calculus is constructed, via a Martinelli typ…
We give a simple proof of the fact that the classical Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator $L$ is R-sectorial of angle $arcsin|1-2/p|$ on $L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{n},\exp(-|x|^2/2)dx)$ (for $1<p<\infty$). Applying the abstract holomorphic functional calculus theory of Kalton and Weis, this immediately gives a new proof of the fact that $L$ has a bounded $H^{\infty}$ functional calculus with this optimal angle.
The wark is a contribution to the functional calculus constructed by of the author and A. A. Atvinovskii of closed operators on Banach spaces. The calculus is based on Markov and related functions as symbols. Estimates of bounded perturbations of operator functions with respect to general operator ideal norms, operator Lipschitzness, moment inequality, Freshet operator differentiability, and Livshitz-Krein trace formulae have been considered.
On a reflexive Banach space $X$, if an operator $T$ admits a functional calculus for the absolutely continuous functions on its spectrum $σ(T) \subseteq \mathbb{R}$, then this functional calculus can always be extended to include all the functions of bounded variation. This need no longer be true on nonreflexive spaces. In this paper, it is shown that on most classical separable nonreflexive spaces, one can construct an example where such an extension is impossible. Sufficient conditions are also given which ensure that an extension of an $\AC$ functional calculus is possible for operators act…
The S-functional calculus is a functional calculus for $(n+1)$-tuples of non necessarily commuting operators that can be considered a higher dimensional version of the classical Riesz-Dunford functional calculus for a single operator. In this last calculus, the resolvent equation plays an important role in the proof of several results. Associated with the S-functional calculus there are two resolvent operators: the left $S_L^{-1}(s,T)$ and the right one $S_R^{-1}(s,T)$, where $s=(s_0,s_1,\ldots,s_n)\in \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ and $T=(T_0,T_1,\ldots,T_n)$ is an $(n+1)$-tuple of non commuting operator…
Regarding quaternions as normal matrices, we first characterize the $2\times 2$ matrix-valued functions, defined on subsets of quaternions, whose values are quaternions. Then we investigate the regularity of quaternionic-valued functions, defined by the analytic functional calculus. Constructions of analytic functional calculi for real linear operators, in particular for quaternionic linear ones, are finally discussed, using a Riesz-Dunford-Gelfand type kernel in one variable, or a Martinelly type kernel in two variables.
We prove that the existence of a Mihlin-Hörmander functional calculus for an operator $L$ implies the boundedness on $L^p$ of both the maximal operators and the continuous square functions build on spectral multipliers of $L.$ The considered multiplier functions are finitely smooth and satisfy an integral condition at infinity. In particular multipliers of compact support are admitted.
Area integral functions are introduced for sectorial operators on Hilbert spaces. We establish the equivalence relationship between the square and area integral functions. This immediately extends McIntosh/Yagi's results on $H^{\8}$ functional calculus of sectorial operators on Hilbert spaces to the case when the square functions are replaced by the area integral functions.
Since 2006 the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions and the related spectral theory on the S-spectrum have had a very fast development. This new spectral theory based on the S-spectrum has applications, for example, in the formulation of quaternionic quantum mechanics, in Schur analysis and in fractional diffusion problems. In this paper we introduce and study the theory of poly slice monogenic functions, also proving some Cauchy type integral formulas. Then we introduce the associated functional calculus, called PS-functional calculus, which is the polyanalytic version of the S-function…
Let $L$ be the sublaplacian and $T$ the partial Laplacian with respect to central variables on H-type groups. We investigate a class of invariant differential operators by the joint functional calculus of $L$ and $T$. We establish Stein-Tomas type restriction theorems for these operators. In particular, the asymptotic behaviors of restriction estimates are given.
In this work we investigate semigroups of operators acting on noncommutative $L^p$-spaces. We introduce noncommutative square functions and their connection to sectoriality, variants of Rademacher sectoriality, and $H^\infty$ functional calculus. We discuss several examples of noncommutative diffusion semigroups. This includes Schur multipliers, $q$-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroups, and the noncommutative Poisson semigroup on free groups.
In this paper we develop a functional calculus for a countable system of generators of contraction strongly continuous semigroups. As a symbol class of such calculus we use the algebra of polynomial tempered distributions. We prove a differential property of constructed calculus and describe its image with the help of the commutant of polynomial shift semigroup. As an application, we consider a function of countable set of second derivative operators.
In the multicentric calculus one takes a polynomial with simple roots as a new global variable and replaces scalar functions φ by functions f taking values in C^d with d the degree of the polynomial leading to an efficient holomorphic functional calculus for bounded operators. This calculus was extended for non-holomorphic functions, so that if A is not diagonalizable one can find a p such that p(A) is diagonalizable and apply the calculus to all matrices. This was done in [7] by creating a Banach algebra for C^d-valued continuous functions in such a way that the original functions φ appear as…
We study bounded holomorphic functional calculus for nonsymmetric infinite dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators ${\mathscr L}$. We prove that if $-{\mathscr L}$ generates an analytic semigroup on $L^{2}(γ_{\infty})$, then ${\mathscr L}$ has bounded holomorphic functional calculus on $L^{r}(γ_{\infty})$, $1<r<\infty$, in any sector of angle $θ>θ^{*}_{r}$, where $γ_{\infty}$ is the associated invariant measure and $θ^{*}_{r}$ the sectoriality angle of ${\mathscr L}$ on $L^{r}(γ_{\infty})$. The angle $θ^{*}_{r}$ is optimal. In particular our result applies to any nondegenerate finite dimensio…
Given any square matrix or a bounded operator $A$ in a Hilbert space such that $p(A)$ is normal (or similar to normal), we construct a Banach algebra, depending on the polynomial $p$, for which a simple functional calculus holds. When the polynomial is of degree $d$, then the algebra deals with continuous $\mathbb C^d$-valued functions, defined on the spectrum of $p(A)$. In particular, the calculus provides a natural approach to deal with nontrivial Jordan blocks and one does not need differentiability at such eigenvalues.
Based on Stokes' theorem we derive a non-holomorphic functional calculus for matrices, assuming sufficient smoothness near eigenvalues, corresponding to the size of related Jordan blocks. It is then applied to the complex conjugation function $τ: z \mapsto \overline z$. The resulting matrix agrees with the hermitian transpose if and only if the matrix is normal. Two other, as such elementary, approaches to define the complex conjugate of a matrix yield the same result.
We investigate the new definition of analytic functional calculus in the terms of representation theory of SL2(R). We avoid any usage of its algebraic homomorphism property and replace it by the demand to be an intertwining operator. The related notion of spectrum and spectral mapping theorem are given. The construction is illustrated by a simple example of calculus and spectrum of non-normal n x n matrix. Keywords: Functional calculus, spectrum, intertwining operator, spectral mapping theorem, jet spaces.
In this article we study bounded operators $T$ on Banach space $X$ which satisfy the discrete Gomilko Shi-Feng condition $$\int_{0}^{2π}|\langle R(re^{it},T)^{2}x,x^*\rangle |dt \leq \frac{C}{(r^2-1)}\norme{x}\norme{x^*},\quad r>1, x\in X, x^* \in X^*. $$ We show that it is equivalent to a certain derivative bounded functional calculus and also to a bounded functional calculus relative to Besov space. Also on Hilbert space discrete Gomilko Shi-Feng condition is equivalent to power-boundedness. Finally we discuss the last equivalence on general Banach space involving the concept of $γ$-boundedn…
By using an $H^{\infty}$ joint functional calculus for strongly commuting operators, we derive a scheme to deduce the $L^p$ boundedness of certain $d$-dimensional Riesz transforms from the $L^p$ boundedness of appropriate one-dimensional Riesz transforms. Moreover, the $L^p$ bounds we obtain are independent of the dimension. The scheme is applied to Riesz transforms connected with orthogonal expansions and discrete Riesz transforms on products of groups with polynomial growth.
In this paper we develop the functional calculus for elliptic operators on compact Lie groups without the assumption that the operator is a classical pseudo-differential operator. Consequently, we provide a symbolic descriptions of complex powers of such operators. As an application, we give a constructive symbolic proof of the Gårding inequality for operators in $(ρ,δ)$-classes in the setting of compact Lie groups.
This paper is devoted to the multivariable $H^\infty$ functional calculus associated with a finite commuting family of sectorial operators on Banach space. First we prove that if $(A_1,\ldots, A_d)$ is such a family, if $A_k$ is $R$-sectorial of $R$-type $ω_k\in(0,π)$, $k=1,\ldots,d$, and if $(A_1,\ldots, A_d)$ admits a bounded $H^\infty(Σ_{θ_1}\times \cdots\timesΣ_{θ_d})$ joint functional calculus for some $θ_k\in (ω_k,π)$, then it admits a bounded $H^\infty(Σ_{θ_1}\times \cdots\timesΣ_{θ_d})$ joint functional calculus for all $θ_k\in (ω_k,π)$, $k=1,\ldots,d$. Second we introduce square funct…
This paper generalizes the classical Sz.-Nagy--Foias $H^{\infty}(\mathbb{D})$ functional calculus for Hilbert space contractions. In particular, we replace the single contraction $T$ with a tuple $T=(T_1, \dots, T_d)$ of commuting bounded operators on a Hilbert space and replace $H^{\infty}(\mathbb{D})$ with a large class of multiplier algebras of Hilbert function spaces on the unit ball in $\mathbb C^d$.
In this paper we establish the associativity property of the pathwise Itô integral in a functional setting for continuous integrators. Here, associativity refers to the computation of the Itô differential of an Itô integral, by means of the intuitive cancellation of the Itô differential and integral signs.
We consider a perturbation determinant for pairs of nonpositive (in a sense of Komatsu) operators on Banach space with nuclear difference and prove a generalization of the important formula for the logarithmic derivative of this determinant. To this end the Frechet differentiability of operator monotonic (negative complete Bernstein) functions of negative and nonpositive operators on Banach spaces is investigated. The results may be regarded as a contribution to the Hirsch functional calculus.
We study the boundedness of the $H^{\infty}$ functional calculus for differential operators acting in (L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{n};\mathbb{C}^{N})). For constant coefficients, we give simple conditions on the symbols implying such boundedness. For non-constant coefficients, we extend our recent results for the (L^p) theory of the Kato square root problem to the more general framework of Hodge-Dirac operators with variable coefficients (Π_B) as treated in (L^2(\mathbb{R}^{n};\mathbb{C}^{N})) by Axelsson, Keith, and McIntosh. We obtain a characterization of the property that (Π_B) has a bounded (H^{\in…
