We present an approach to the spectrum and analytic functional calculus for quaternionic linear operators, following the corresponding results concerning the real linear operators. In fact, the construction of the analytic functional calculus for real linear operators can be refined to get a similar construction for quaternionic linear ones, in a classical manner, using a Riesz-Dunford-Gelfand type kernel, and considering spectra in the complex plane. A quaternionic joint spectrum for pairs of operators is also discussed, and an analytic functional calculus is constructed, via a Martinelli type kernel in two variables.
In this paper we extend the $H^\infty$ functional calculus to quaternionic operators and to $n$-tuples of noncommuting operators using the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions and the associated functional calculus, called $S$-functional calculus. The $S$-functional calculus has two versions one for quaternionic-valued functions and one for Clifford algebra-valued functions and can be considered the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus based on slice hyperholomorphicity because it shares with it the most important properties. The $S$-functional calculus is based on the notion of $S$-spectru…
Regarding quaternions as normal matrices, we first characterize the $2\times 2$ matrix-valued functions, defined on subsets of quaternions, whose values are quaternions. Then we investigate the regularity of quaternionic-valued functions, defined by the analytic functional calculus. Constructions of analytic functional calculi for real linear operators, in particular for quaternionic linear ones, are finally discussed, using a Riesz-Dunford-Gelfand type kernel in one variable, or a Martinelly type kernel in two variables.
Denoting by $\mathbb{M}$ the complexification of the quaternionic algebra $\mathbb{H}$, we characterize the family of those $\mathbb{M}$-valued functions, defined on subsets of $\H$, whose values are actually quaternions, using an intrinsic approach. In particular, we show that the slice quaternionic regularity can be characterized via a Cauchy type transform acting on the space of analytic $\mathbb{M}$-valued stem functions.
Most of theoretical physics is based on the mathematics of functions of a real or a complex variable; yet we frequently are drawn to try extending our reach to include quaternions. The non-commutativity of the quaternion algebra poses obstacles for the usual manipulations of calculus; but we show in this paper how many of those obstacles can be overcome. The surprising result is that the first order term in the expansion of F(x+delta) is a compact formula involving both F'(x) and [F(x) - F(x*)]/(x-x*). This advance in the differential calculus for quaternionic variables also leads us to some p…
In this article we give an approach to define continuous functional calculus for bounded quaternionic normal operators defined on a right quaternionic Hilbert space.
In this paper, we first prove that the S-spectrum of a bounded right quaternionic linear operator on a two-sided quaternionic Banach space is a union of the spectrum of some bounded linear operators on a complex Banach space. Furthermore, we show that the S-functional calculus is obtained by the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus for complex linear operators. We also give simple proofs of some already existing results.
Two themes drive this article: identifying the structure necessary to formulate quaternionic operator theory and revealing the relation between complex and quaternionic operator theory. The theory of quaternionic right linear operators is usually formulated assuming the existenc of both a right- and a left-multiplication on the Banach space $V$, as the space of bounded operators on $V$ is otherwise not a quaternionic linear space. A right linear operator is however only associated with the right-multiplication and in certain settings, e.g. on Hilbert spaces, the left-multiplication is not defi…
The spectral theory on the $S$-spectrum was born out of the need to give quaternionic quantum mechanics (formulated by Birkhoff and von Neumann) a precise mathematical foundation. Then it turned out that this theory has important applications in several fields such as fractional diffusion problems and, moreover, it allows one to define several functional calculi for $n$-tuples of noncommuting operators. With this paper we show that the spectral theory on the $S$-spectrum is much more general and it contains, just as particular cases, the complex, the quaternionic and the Clifford settings. Mor…
The aim of this work is to define a continuous functional calculus in quaternionic Hilbert spaces, starting from basic issues regarding the notion of spherical spectrum of a normal operator. As properties of the spherical spectrum suggest, the class of continuous functions to consider in this setting is the one of slice quaternionic functions. Slice functions generalize the concept of slice regular function, which comprises power series with quaternionic coefficients on one side and that can be seen as an effective generalization to quaternions of holomorphic functions of one complex variable.…
In this paper we introduce the Schatten class of operators and the Berezin transform of operators in the quaternionic setting. The first topic is of great importance in operator theory but it is also necessary to study the second one because we need the notion of trace class operators, which is a particular case of the Schatten class. Regarding the Berezin transform, we give the general definition and properties. Then we concentrate on the setting of weighted Bergman spaces of slice hyperholomorphic functions. Our results are based on the S-spectrum for quaternionic operators, which is the not…
Recent innovations in the differential calculus for functions of non-commuting variables, beginning with a quaternionic variable, are now extended to consider some integration.
In this paper we introduce the two possible formulations of the F-functional calculus which are based on the Fueter-Sce mapping theorem in integral form and we introduce the pseudo F-resolvent equation. In the case of dimension 3 we prove the F-resolvent equation and we study the analogue of the Riesz projectors associated with this calculus. The case of dimension 3 is also useful to study the quaternionic version of the F-functional calculus.
In this paper we introduce fractional powers of quaternionic operators. Their definition is based on the theory of slice-hyperholomorphic functions and on the $S$-resolvent operators of the quaternionic functional calculus. The integral representation formulas of the fractional powers and the quaternionic version of Kato's formula are based on the notion of $S$-spectrum of a quaternionic operator. The proofs of several properties of the fractional powers of quaternionic operators rely on the $S$-resolvent equation. This equation, which is very important and of independent interest, has already…
Due to the existence of incompatible observables, the propositional calculus of a quantum system does not form a Boolean algebra but an orthomodular lattice. Such lattice can be realised as a lattice of subspaces on a real, complex or quaternionic Hilbert space, which motivated the formulation of real and quaternionic quantum mechanics in addition to the usual complex formulation. It was argued that any real quantum system admits a complex structure that turns it into a complex quantum system and hence real quantum mechanics was soon discarded. Several authors however developed a quaternionic …
Since 2006 the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions and the related spectral theory on the S-spectrum have had a very fast development. This new spectral theory based on the S-spectrum has applications, for example, in the formulation of quaternionic quantum mechanics, in Schur analysis and in fractional diffusion problems. In this paper we introduce and study the theory of poly slice monogenic functions, also proving some Cauchy type integral formulas. Then we introduce the associated functional calculus, called PS-functional calculus, which is the polyanalytic version of the S-function…
The quaternionic spectral theorem has already been considered in the literature, see e.g. [22], [31], [32], however, except for the finite dimensional case in which the notion of spectrum is associated to an eigenvalue problem, see [21], it is not specified which notion of spectrum underlies the theorem. In this paper we prove the quaternionic spectral theorem for unitary operators using the $S$-spectrum. In the case of quaternionic matrices, the $S$-spectrum coincides with the right-spectrum and so our result recovers the well known theorem for matrices. The notion of $S$-spectrum is relative…
Here we follow the basic analysis that is common for real and complex variables and find how it can be applied to a quaternionic variable. Non-commutativity of the quaternion algebra poses obstacles for the usual manipulations; but we show how many of those obstacles can be overcome. After a tiny bit of linear algebra we look at the beginnings of differential calculus. The surprising result is that the first order term in the expansion of F(x+delta) is a compact formula involving both F'(x) and [F(x) - F(x*)]/(x-x*).
The Fueter-Sce-Qian mapping theorem is a two steps procedure to extend holomorphic functions of one complex variable to quaternionic or Clifford algebra-valued functions in the kernel of a suitable generalized Cauchy-Riemann operator. Using the Cauchy formula of slice monogenic functions it is possible to give the Fueter-Sce-Qian extension theorem an integral form and to define the $\mathcal{F}$-functional calculus for $n$-tuples of commuting operators. This functional calculus is defined on the $S$-spectrum but it generates a monogenic functional calculus in the spirit of McIntosh and collabo…
In this paper we show how the spectral theory based on the notion of $S$-spectrum allows us to study new classes of fractional diffusion and of fractional evolution processes. We prove new results on the quaternionic version of the $H^\infty$ functional calculus and we use it to define the fractional powers of vector operators. The Fourier laws for the propagation of the heat in non homogeneous materials is a vector operator of the form \[ T=e_1\,a(x)\partial_{x_1} + e_2\,b(x)\partial_{x_2} + e_3\,c(x)\partial_{x_3}, \] where $e_\ell$, $e_\ell=1,2,3$ are orthogonal unit vectors, $a$, $b$, $c$ …
The $S$-functional calculus is based on the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions and it defines functions of $n$-tuples of not necessarily commuting operators or of quaternionic operators. This calculus relays on the notion of $S$-spectrum and of $S$-resolvent operator. Since most of the properties that hold for the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus extend to the S-functional calculus it can be considered its non commutative version. In this paper we show that the Taylor formula of the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus can be generalized to the S-functional calculus, the proof is not a t…
The possibility of formulating quantum mechanics over quaternionic Hilbert spaces can be traced back to von Neumann's foundational works in the thirties. The absence of a suitable quaternionic version of spectrum prevented the full development of the theory. The first rigorous quaternionic formulation has been started only in 2007 with the definition of the spherical spectrum of a quaternionic operator based on a quadratic version of resolvent operator. The relevance of this notion is proved by the existence of a quaternionic continuous functional calculus and a theory of quaternionic semigrou…
For a bounded quaternionic operator $T$ on a right quaternionic Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ and $\varepsilon >0$, the pseudo $S$-spectrum of $T$ is defined as \begin{align*} Λ_{\varepsilon}^{S}(T) := σ_S (T) \bigcup \left \{ q \in \mathbb{H}\setminus σ_S(T):\; \|Δ_{q}(T)^{-1}\| \geq \frac{1}{\varepsilon} \right\}, \end{align*} where $\mathbb{H}$ denotes the division ring of quaternions, $σ_S(T)$ is the $S$-spectrum of $T$ and $Δ_q(T)= T^2-2 \text{Re}(q)T+|q|^2I$. This is a natural generalization of pseudospectrum from the theory of complex Hilbert spaces. In this article, we investigate severa…
We show that any bounded analytic semigroup on $L^p$ (with $1<p<\infty$) whose negative generator admits a bounded $H^{\infty}$ functional calculus with respect to some angle $< π/2$ can be dilated into a bounded analytic semigroup $(R_t)_{t\geq 0}$ on a bigger $L^p$-space in such a way that $R_t$ is a positive contraction for any $t$. We also establish a discrete analogue for Ritt operators and consider the case when $L^p$-spaces are replaced by more general Banach spaces. In connection with these functional calculus issues, we study isometric dilations of bounded continuous representations o…
In this work we treat realization results for operator-valued functions which are analytic in the complex sense or slice hyperholomorphic over the quaternions. In the complex setting, we prove a realization theorem for an operator-valued function analytic in a neighborhood of the origin with a coisometric state space operator thus generalizing an analogous result in the unitary case. A main difference with previous works is the use of reproducing kernel Krein spaces. We then prove the counterpart of this result in the quaternionic setting. The present work is the first paper which presents a r…
Recent innovations on the differential calculus for functions of non-commuting variables, begun for a quaternionic variable, are now extended to the case of a general matrix over the complex numbers. The expansion of F(X+Delta) is given to first order in Delta for general matrix variables X and Delta that do not commute with each other.
We show that a bounded analytic semigroup on an $L_p$-space has a bounded $H^{\infty}(Σ_φ)$-calculus for some $φ< \fracπ{2}$ if and only if the semigroup can be obtained, after restricting to invariant subspaces, factorizing through invariant subspaces and similarity transforms, from a bounded analytic semigroup on some bigger $L_p$-space which is positive and contractive on the real line.
Operator $k$-tone functions on an open interval of the real line, which are higher order extensions of operator monotone and convex functions, are characterized via certain inequalities for the real and imaginary parts of analytic functional calculus by those functions.
The main purpose of this work is the construction of an analytic functional calculus for Clifford operators, which are operators acting on certain modules over Clifford algebras. Unlike in some preceding works by other authors, we use a spectrum defined in the complex plane, and certain stem functions, analytic in neighborhoods of such a spectrum. The replacement of the slice regular functions, having values in a Clifford algebra, by analytic stem functions becomes possible because of an isomorphism induced by a Cauchy type transform, whose existence is proved in the first part of this work.
This paper provides sharp lower estimates near the origin for the functional calculus $F(-uA)$ of a generator $A$ of an operator semigroup defined on a sector; here $F$ is given as the Fourier--Borel transform of an analytic functional. The results are linked to the existence of an identity element in the Banach algebra generated by the semigroup. Both the quasinilpotent and non-quasinilpotent cases are considered, and sharp results are proved extending many in the literature.
We study bounded holomorphic functional calculus for nonsymmetric infinite dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators ${\mathscr L}$. We prove that if $-{\mathscr L}$ generates an analytic semigroup on $L^{2}(γ_{\infty})$, then ${\mathscr L}$ has bounded holomorphic functional calculus on $L^{r}(γ_{\infty})$, $1<r<\infty$, in any sector of angle $θ>θ^{*}_{r}$, where $γ_{\infty}$ is the associated invariant measure and $θ^{*}_{r}$ the sectoriality angle of ${\mathscr L}$ on $L^{r}(γ_{\infty})$. The angle $θ^{*}_{r}$ is optimal. In particular our result applies to any nondegenerate finite dimensio…
The goal of the present paper is to introduce and study noncommutative Hardy spaces associated with the regular $Λ$-polyball, to develop a functional calculus on noncommutative Hardy spaces for the completely non-coisometric (c.n.c.) $k$-tuples in ${\bf B}_Λ(H)$, and to study the characteristic functions and the associated multi-analytic models for the c.n.c. elements in the regular $Λ$-polyball. In addition, we show that the characteristic function is a complete unitary invariant for the class of c.n.c. $k$-tuples in ${\bf B}_Λ(H)$. These results extend the corresponding classical results of …
Solving analytic systems using inversion can be implemented in a variety of ways. One method is to use Lagrange inversion and variations. Here we present a different approach, based on dual vector fields. For a function analytic in a neighborhood of the origin in the complex plane, we associate a vector field and its dual, an operator version of Fourier transform. The construction extends naturally to functions of several variables. We illustrate with various examples and present an efficient algorithms readily implemented symbolically in Maple while suitable as well for numerical computations…
We investigate the boundedness of the $H^\infty$-calculus by estimating the bound $b(\varepsilon)$ of the mapping $H^{\infty}\rightarrow \mathcal{B}(X)$: $f\mapsto f(A)T(\varepsilon)$ for $\varepsilon$ near zero. Here, $-A$ generates the analytic semigroup $T$ and $H^{\infty}$ is the space of bounded analytic functions on a domain strictly containing the spectrum of $A$. We show that $b(\varepsilon)=\mathcal{O}(|\log\varepsilon|)$ in general, whereas $b(\varepsilon)=\mathcal{O}(1)$ for bounded calculi. This generalizes a result by Vitse and complements work by Haase and Rozendaal for non-analy…
We develop a functional calculus for $d$-tuples of non-commuting elements in a Banach algebra. The functions we apply are free analytic functions, that is nc functions that are bounded on certain polynomial polyhedra.
Properties of the mappings \begin{align*} C&\mapsto\frac1{(2πi)^2}\int_{Γ_1}\int_{Γ_2}f(λ,μ)\,R_{1,\,λ}\,C\, R_{2,\,μ}\,dμ\,dλ, C&\mapsto\frac1{2πi}\int_Γg(λ)R_{1,\,λ}\,C\, R_{2,\,λ}\,dλ\end{align*} are discussed; here $R_{1,\,(\cdot)}$ and $R_{2,\,(\cdot)}$ are pseudo-resolvents, i.~e., resolvents of bounded, unbounded, or multivalued linear operators, and $f$ and $g$ are analytic functions. Several applications are considered: a representation of the impulse response of a second order linear differential equation with operator coefficients, a representation of the solution of the Sylvester e…
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for diffusion equations associated to a class of strongly hypoelliptic pseudo-differential operators on graded Lie groups. To do so, we develop a global complex functional calculus on graded Lie groups in order to analyse the corresponding energy estimates. One of the main aspects of this complex functional calculus is that for the $(ρ,δ)$-Euclidean Hörmander classes we recover the standard functional calculus developed by Seeley [38]. In consequence the Gårding inequality that we prove for arbitrary graded Lie groups absorbs the historical 1953's ineq…
We investigate the new definition of analytic functional calculus in the terms of representation theory of SL2(R). We avoid any usage of its algebraic homomorphism property and replace it by the demand to be an intertwining operator. The related notion of spectrum and spectral mapping theorem are given. The construction is illustrated by a simple example of calculus and spectrum of non-normal n x n matrix. Keywords: Functional calculus, spectrum, intertwining operator, spectral mapping theorem, jet spaces.
Let $\{T_t\}_{t>0}$ be a strongly continuous semigroup of positive contractions on $L_p(X,μ)$ with $1<p<\infty$. Let $E$ be a UMD Banach lattice of measurable functions on another measure space $(Ω,ν)$. For $f\in L_p(X; E)$ define $$\mathcal M(f)(x, ω)=\sup_{t>0}\frac1t\Big|\int_0^tT_s(f(\cdot,ω))(x)ds\Big|,\quad (x,ω)\in X\timesΩ.$$ Then the following maximal ergodic inequality holds $$\big\|\mathcal M(f)\big\|_{L_p(X; E)}\lesssim \big\|f\big\|_{L_p(X; E)},\quad f\in L_p(X; E).$$ If the semigroup $\{T_t\}_{t>0}$ is additionally assumed to be analytic, then $\{T_t\}_{t>0}$ extends to an analyt…
We discuss an extension of Toeplitz quantization based on polyanalytic functions. We derive isomorphism theorem for polyanalytic Toeplitz operators between weighted Sobolev-Fock spaces of polyanalytic functions, which are images of modulation spaces under polyanalytic Bargmann transforms. This generalizes well-known results from the analytic setting. Finally, we derive an asymptotic symbol calculus and present an asymptotic expansion of complex Weyl operators in terms of polyanalytic Toeplitz operators.
