We compare various functional calculus properties of Ritt operators. We show the existence of a Ritt operator T : X --> X on some Banach space X with the following property: T has a bounded $\H^\infty$ functional calculus with respect to the unit disc $\D$ (that is, T is polynomially bounded) but T does not have any bounded $\H^\infty$ functional calculus with respect to a Stolz domain of $\D$ with vertex at 1. Also we show that for an R-Ritt operator, the unconditional Ritt condition of Kalton-Portal is equivalent to the existence of a bounded $\H^\infty$ functional calculus with respect to such a Stolz domain.
In this paper, we present a new class of operators, which we name to be $n$-Ritt operators. This produces a discrete analogue of $n$-sectorial operators and generalizes the notion of Ritt operators. We develop a $H^\infty$-functional calculus for $n$-Ritt operators and prove an useful transference result. We also generalize the notions of quadratic functional calculus and $n$-$R$-Ritt operator and discuss some examples.
This note deals with the boundedness of the $H^\infty$ functional calculus of Ritt operators $T$ and associated square function estimates. The purpose is to give a shorter, concise and slightly more general approach towards Le~Merdy's results [19] on this subject.
We introduce and investigate $H^\infty$-functional calculus for commuting finite families of Ritt operators on Banach space $X$. We show that if either $X$ is a Banach lattice or $X$ or $X^*$ has property $(α)$, then a commuting $d$-tuple $(T_1,\ldots, T_d)$ of Ritt operators on $X$ has an $H^\infty$ joint functional calculus if and only if each $T_k$ admits an $H^\infty$ functional calculus. Next for $p\in(1,\infty)$, we characterize commuting $d$-tuple of Ritt operators on $L^p(Ω)$ which admit an $H^\infty$ joint functional calculus, by a joint dilation property. We also obtain a similar cha…

We show that any bounded analytic semigroup on $L^p$ (with $1<p<\infty$) whose negative generator admits a bounded $H^{\infty}$ functional calculus with respect to some angle $< π/2$ can be dilated into a bounded analytic semigroup $(R_t)_{t\geq 0}$ on a bigger $L^p$-space in such a way that $R_t$ is a positive contraction for any $t$. We also establish a discrete analogue for Ritt operators and consider the case when $L^p$-spaces are replaced by more general Banach spaces. In connection with these functional calculus issues, we study isometric dilations of bounded continuous representations o…
In this paper, we investigate the role of square functions defined for a $d$-tuple of commuting Ritt operators $(T_1,...,T_d)$ acting on a general Banach space $X$. Firstly, we prove that if the $d$-tuple admits a $H^\infty$ joint functional calculus, then it verifies various square function estimates. Then we study the converse when every $T_k$ is a $R$-Ritt operator. Under this last hypothesis, and when $X$ is a $K$-convex space, we show that square function estimates yield dilation of $(T_1,...,T_d)$ on some Bochner space $L_p(Ω;X)$ into a $d$-tuple of isomorphisms with a $C(\mathbb{T}^d)$ …
A Ritt operator T : X --> X on Banach space is a power bounded operator such that the sequence of all n(T^{n} -T^{n-1}) is bounded. When X=Lp for some 1<p<\infty, we study the validity of square functions estimates Norm{(\sum_k k |T^{k}(x) - T^{k-1}(x)|^2)^{1/2}}_{Lp} \leq K Norm{x}_{Lp} for such operators. We show that T and its adjoint T^* both satisfy such estimates if and only if T admits a bounded functional calculus with respect to a Stolz domain. This is a single operator analog of the famous Cowling-Doust-McIntosh-Yagi characterization of bounded H^\infty-calculus on $Lp$-spaces by the…
For any Ritt operator $T$ acting on a noncommutative $L^p$-space, we define the notion of \textit{completely} bounded functional calculus $H^\infty(B_γ)$ where $B_γ$ is a Stolz domain. Moreover, we introduce the `column square functions' $\norm{x}_{T,c,α}=\Bnorm{\Big(\sum_{k=1}^{+\infty}k^{2α-1}|T^{k-1}(I-T)^α(x)|^2\Big)^{1/2}}_{L^p(M)}$ and the `row square functions' $\norm{x}_{T,r,α}=\Bnorm{\Big(\sum_{k=1}^{+\infty}k^{2α-1} |\Big(T^{k-1}(I-T)^α(x)\Big)^*|^2\Big)^{1/2}}_{L^p(M)}$ for any $α>0$ and any $x\in L^p(M)$. Then, we provide an example of Ritt operator which admits a completely bounde…
By means of a new technique, we develop further a discrete subordination approach to the functional calculus of power bounded and Ritt operators initiated by N. Dungey in [19]. This allows us to show, in particular, that (infinite) convex combinations of powers of Ritt operators are Ritt. Moreover, we provide a unified framework for several main results on discrete subordination from [19] and answer a question left open in [19]. The paper can be considered as a complement to [26] for the discrete setting.
Let $G$ be a locally compact abelian group, let $ν$ be a regular probability measure on $G$, let $X$ be a Banach space, let $π\colon G\to B(X)$ be a bounded strongly continuous representation. Consider the average (or subordinated) operator $S(π,ν) = \int_{G} π(t)\,dν(t)\,\colon X\to X$. We show that if $X$ is a UMD Banach lattice and $ν$ has bounded angular ratio, then $S(π,ν)$ is a Ritt operator with a bounded $H^\infty$ functional calculus. Next we show that if $ν$ is the square of a symmetric probability measure and $X$ is $K$-convex, then $S(π,ν)$ is a Ritt operator. We further show that …
For any Ritt operator T:L^{p}(Ω) --> L^{p}(Ω), for any positive real number α, and for any x in L^{p}, we consider the square functions |x |_{T,α} = \Bigl| \Bigl(\sum_{k=1}^{\infty} k^{2α-1}\bigl |T^{k-1}(I-T)^αx \bigr|^2 \Bigr)^{1/2}_{L^{p}}. We show that if T is actually an R-Ritt operator, then these square functions are pairwise equivalent. Then we show that T and its adjoint T* acting on L^{p'} both satisfy uniform estimates |x|_{T,1} \lesssim |x|_{L^{p}} and |y|_{T*,1} \lesssim |y|_{L^{p'}} for x in L^{p} and y in L^{p'} if and only if T is R-Ritt and admits a dilation in the following s…
We develop a functional calculus for $d$-tuples of non-commuting elements in a Banach algebra. The functions we apply are free analytic functions, that is nc functions that are bounded on certain polynomial polyhedra.
Operator $k$-tone functions on an open interval of the real line, which are higher order extensions of operator monotone and convex functions, are characterized via certain inequalities for the real and imaginary parts of analytic functional calculus by those functions.
We study functional calculus properties of $C_{0}$-groups on real interpolation spaces, using transference principles. We obtain interpolation versions of the classical transference principle for bounded groups and of a recent transference principle for unbounded groups. Then we show that each group generator on a Banach space has a bounded $H^{\infty}_{1}$-calculus on real interpolation spaces. Additional results are derived from this.
If X is a sequentially complete locally convex space, then a quotient bounded operator T is regular (in the sense of Waelbroeck) if and only if it is a bounded element (in the sense of Allan) of the algebra of quotient bounded operators on X. The classic functional calculus for the bounded operators on Banach space is generalized for such bounded operators. Also are studied some spectral propreties of the locally bounded operators.
In this paper, we introduce a parametric pseudodifferential calculus on noncommutative $n$-tori which is a natural nest for resolvents of elliptic pseudodifferential operators. Unlike in some previous approaches to parametric pseudodifferential calculi, our parametric pseudodifferential calculus contains resolvents of elliptic pseudodifferential operators that need not be differential operators. As an application we show that complex powers of positive elliptic pseudodifferential operators on noncommutative $n$-tori are pseudodifferential operators. This confirms a claim of Fathi-Ghorbanpour-K…
Spectral theory and functional calculus for unbounded self-adjoint operators on a Hilbert space are usually treated through von Neumann's Cayley transform. Based on ideas of Woronowicz, we redevelop this theory from the point of view of multiplier algebras and the so-called bounded transform (which establishes a bijective correspondence between closed operators and pure contractions). This also leads to a simple account of the affiliation relation between von Neumann algebras and self-adjoint operators.
The goal of the present paper is to introduce and study noncommutative Hardy spaces associated with the regular $Λ$-polyball, to develop a functional calculus on noncommutative Hardy spaces for the completely non-coisometric (c.n.c.) $k$-tuples in ${\bf B}_Λ(H)$, and to study the characteristic functions and the associated multi-analytic models for the c.n.c. elements in the regular $Λ$-polyball. In addition, we show that the characteristic function is a complete unitary invariant for the class of c.n.c. $k$-tuples in ${\bf B}_Λ(H)$. These results extend the corresponding classical results of …
The extension of Hille-Phillips functional calculus of semigroup generators which leads to unbounded operators is considered. Connections of this calculus to Bochner-Phillips functional calculus are indicated. In particular, the multiplication rule and the composition rule are proved. Several examples are given.
A consistent functional calculus approach to the spectral theorem for strongly commuting normal operators on Hilbert spaces is presented. In contrast to the common approaches using projection-valued measures or multiplication operators, here the functional calculus is not treated as a subordinate but as the central concept. Based on five simple axioms for a "measurable functional calculus", the theory of such calculi is developed in detail, including spectral theory, uniqueness results and construction principles. Finally, the functional calculus form of the spectral theorem is stated and prov…
The extension of Hille-Phillips functional calculus of semigroup generators which leads to unbounded operators is given. Connections of this calculus to Bochner-Phillips functional calculus are indicated, and several examples are considered.
In this paper we extend the $H^\infty$ functional calculus to quaternionic operators and to $n$-tuples of noncommuting operators using the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions and the associated functional calculus, called $S$-functional calculus. The $S$-functional calculus has two versions one for quaternionic-valued functions and one for Clifford algebra-valued functions and can be considered the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus based on slice hyperholomorphicity because it shares with it the most important properties. The $S$-functional calculus is based on the notion of $S$-spectru…
This note is a complement to Pusz--Woronowicz's works on functional calculus for two positive forms from the viewpoint of operator theory. Based on an elementary, self-contained and purely Hilbert space operator explanation of their functional calculus, we show that any operator connection type operations (including any operator perspectives) are captured by their functional calculus.
In this note, we show that if a Banach space X has a predual, then every bounded linear operator on X with a continuous functional calculus admits a bounded Borel functional calculus. A consequence of this is that on such a Banach space, the classes of finitely spectral and prespectral operators coincide. We also apply this result to give some sufficient conditions for an operator with an absolutely continuous functional calculus to admit a bounded Borel one.
The functional calculus of semigroup generators, based on the class of Bernstein functions in several variables is developed, the condition for holomorphy of semigroups, generated by operators which arisen in the calculus is given, and in the one-dimensional case the moment inequality for such operators is proved.
In the present note a functional calculus $ϕ\mapsto ϕ(A)$ for self-adjoint definitizable linear relation on Krein spaces is developed. This functional calculus is the proper analogue of $ϕ\mapsto \int ϕ\, dE$ in the Hilbert space situation. It also comprises the Spectral Theorem for self-adjoint definitizable operators on Krein spaces showing the existence of spectral projections.
In this paper we introduce the two possible formulations of the F-functional calculus which are based on the Fueter-Sce mapping theorem in integral form and we introduce the pseudo F-resolvent equation. In the case of dimension 3 we prove the F-resolvent equation and we study the analogue of the Riesz projectors associated with this calculus. The case of dimension 3 is also useful to study the quaternionic version of the F-functional calculus.
We consider a functional calculus for compact operators, acting on the singular values rather than the spectrum, which appears frequently in applied mathematics. Necessary and sufficient conditions for this singular value functional calculus to be Lipschitz-continuous with respect to the Hilbert-Schmidt norm are given. We also provide sharp constants.
The multidimensional functional calculus of semigroup generators, based on the class of Bernstein functions in several variables is developed, the spectral mapping theorems for joint spectra have been stated, the condition for holomorphy of semigroups, generated by operators which arises in the calculus is given, and the moment inequality for such operators is proved.
We discuss a new concept of definitizability of a normal operator on Krein spaces. For this new concept we develop a functional calculus $ϕ\mapsto ϕ(N)$ which is the proper analogue of $ϕ\mapsto \int ϕ\, dE$ in the Hilbert space situation.
We describe a closed operator functional calculus in Banach modules over the group algebra $L^1(\mathbb R)$ and illustrate its usefulness with a few applications. In particular, we deduce a spectral mapping theorem for operators in the functional calculus, which generalizes some of the known results. We also obtain an estimate for the spectrum of a perturbed differential operator in a certain class.
In this paper, we first prove that the S-spectrum of a bounded right quaternionic linear operator on a two-sided quaternionic Banach space is a union of the spectrum of some bounded linear operators on a complex Banach space. Furthermore, we show that the S-functional calculus is obtained by the Riesz-Dunford functional calculus for complex linear operators. We also give simple proofs of some already existing results.
In this short note we use ideas from systems theory to define a functional calculus for infinitesimal generators of strongly continuous semigroups on a Hilbert space. Among others, we show how this leads to new proofs of (known) results in functional calculus.
We present an approach to the spectrum and analytic functional calculus for quaternionic linear operators, following the corresponding results concerning the real linear operators. In fact, the construction of the analytic functional calculus for real linear operators can be refined to get a similar construction for quaternionic linear ones, in a classical manner, using a Riesz-Dunford-Gelfand type kernel, and considering spectra in the complex plane. A quaternionic joint spectrum for pairs of operators is also discussed, and an analytic functional calculus is constructed, via a Martinelli typ…
We give a simple proof of the fact that the classical Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator $L$ is R-sectorial of angle $arcsin|1-2/p|$ on $L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{n},\exp(-|x|^2/2)dx)$ (for $1<p<\infty$). Applying the abstract holomorphic functional calculus theory of Kalton and Weis, this immediately gives a new proof of the fact that $L$ has a bounded $H^{\infty}$ functional calculus with this optimal angle.
The wark is a contribution to the functional calculus constructed by of the author and A. A. Atvinovskii of closed operators on Banach spaces. The calculus is based on Markov and related functions as symbols. Estimates of bounded perturbations of operator functions with respect to general operator ideal norms, operator Lipschitzness, moment inequality, Freshet operator differentiability, and Livshitz-Krein trace formulae have been considered.
On a reflexive Banach space $X$, if an operator $T$ admits a functional calculus for the absolutely continuous functions on its spectrum $σ(T) \subseteq \mathbb{R}$, then this functional calculus can always be extended to include all the functions of bounded variation. This need no longer be true on nonreflexive spaces. In this paper, it is shown that on most classical separable nonreflexive spaces, one can construct an example where such an extension is impossible. Sufficient conditions are also given which ensure that an extension of an $\AC$ functional calculus is possible for operators act…
The S-functional calculus is a functional calculus for $(n+1)$-tuples of non necessarily commuting operators that can be considered a higher dimensional version of the classical Riesz-Dunford functional calculus for a single operator. In this last calculus, the resolvent equation plays an important role in the proof of several results. Associated with the S-functional calculus there are two resolvent operators: the left $S_L^{-1}(s,T)$ and the right one $S_R^{-1}(s,T)$, where $s=(s_0,s_1,\ldots,s_n)\in \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ and $T=(T_0,T_1,\ldots,T_n)$ is an $(n+1)$-tuple of non commuting operator…
Regarding quaternions as normal matrices, we first characterize the $2\times 2$ matrix-valued functions, defined on subsets of quaternions, whose values are quaternions. Then we investigate the regularity of quaternionic-valued functions, defined by the analytic functional calculus. Constructions of analytic functional calculi for real linear operators, in particular for quaternionic linear ones, are finally discussed, using a Riesz-Dunford-Gelfand type kernel in one variable, or a Martinelly type kernel in two variables.
We prove that the existence of a Mihlin-Hörmander functional calculus for an operator $L$ implies the boundedness on $L^p$ of both the maximal operators and the continuous square functions build on spectral multipliers of $L.$ The considered multiplier functions are finitely smooth and satisfy an integral condition at infinity. In particular multipliers of compact support are admitted.
Area integral functions are introduced for sectorial operators on Hilbert spaces. We establish the equivalence relationship between the square and area integral functions. This immediately extends McIntosh/Yagi's results on $H^{\8}$ functional calculus of sectorial operators on Hilbert spaces to the case when the square functions are replaced by the area integral functions.
Since 2006 the theory of slice hyperholomorphic functions and the related spectral theory on the S-spectrum have had a very fast development. This new spectral theory based on the S-spectrum has applications, for example, in the formulation of quaternionic quantum mechanics, in Schur analysis and in fractional diffusion problems. In this paper we introduce and study the theory of poly slice monogenic functions, also proving some Cauchy type integral formulas. Then we introduce the associated functional calculus, called PS-functional calculus, which is the polyanalytic version of the S-function…
Let $L$ be the sublaplacian and $T$ the partial Laplacian with respect to central variables on H-type groups. We investigate a class of invariant differential operators by the joint functional calculus of $L$ and $T$. We establish Stein-Tomas type restriction theorems for these operators. In particular, the asymptotic behaviors of restriction estimates are given.
In this work we investigate semigroups of operators acting on noncommutative $L^p$-spaces. We introduce noncommutative square functions and their connection to sectoriality, variants of Rademacher sectoriality, and $H^\infty$ functional calculus. We discuss several examples of noncommutative diffusion semigroups. This includes Schur multipliers, $q$-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroups, and the noncommutative Poisson semigroup on free groups.
Properties of the mappings \begin{align*} C&\mapsto\frac1{(2πi)^2}\int_{Γ_1}\int_{Γ_2}f(λ,μ)\,R_{1,\,λ}\,C\, R_{2,\,μ}\,dμ\,dλ, C&\mapsto\frac1{2πi}\int_Γg(λ)R_{1,\,λ}\,C\, R_{2,\,λ}\,dλ\end{align*} are discussed; here $R_{1,\,(\cdot)}$ and $R_{2,\,(\cdot)}$ are pseudo-resolvents, i.~e., resolvents of bounded, unbounded, or multivalued linear operators, and $f$ and $g$ are analytic functions. Several applications are considered: a representation of the impulse response of a second order linear differential equation with operator coefficients, a representation of the solution of the Sylvester e…
In this paper we develop a functional calculus for a countable system of generators of contraction strongly continuous semigroups. As a symbol class of such calculus we use the algebra of polynomial tempered distributions. We prove a differential property of constructed calculus and describe its image with the help of the commutant of polynomial shift semigroup. As an application, we consider a function of countable set of second derivative operators.
In the multicentric calculus one takes a polynomial with simple roots as a new global variable and replaces scalar functions φ by functions f taking values in C^d with d the degree of the polynomial leading to an efficient holomorphic functional calculus for bounded operators. This calculus was extended for non-holomorphic functions, so that if A is not diagonalizable one can find a p such that p(A) is diagonalizable and apply the calculus to all matrices. This was done in [7] by creating a Banach algebra for C^d-valued continuous functions in such a way that the original functions φ appear as…
We study bounded holomorphic functional calculus for nonsymmetric infinite dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators ${\mathscr L}$. We prove that if $-{\mathscr L}$ generates an analytic semigroup on $L^{2}(γ_{\infty})$, then ${\mathscr L}$ has bounded holomorphic functional calculus on $L^{r}(γ_{\infty})$, $1<r<\infty$, in any sector of angle $θ>θ^{*}_{r}$, where $γ_{\infty}$ is the associated invariant measure and $θ^{*}_{r}$ the sectoriality angle of ${\mathscr L}$ on $L^{r}(γ_{\infty})$. The angle $θ^{*}_{r}$ is optimal. In particular our result applies to any nondegenerate finite dimensio…
Given any square matrix or a bounded operator $A$ in a Hilbert space such that $p(A)$ is normal (or similar to normal), we construct a Banach algebra, depending on the polynomial $p$, for which a simple functional calculus holds. When the polynomial is of degree $d$, then the algebra deals with continuous $\mathbb C^d$-valued functions, defined on the spectrum of $p(A)$. In particular, the calculus provides a natural approach to deal with nontrivial Jordan blocks and one does not need differentiability at such eigenvalues.
Based on Stokes' theorem we derive a non-holomorphic functional calculus for matrices, assuming sufficient smoothness near eigenvalues, corresponding to the size of related Jordan blocks. It is then applied to the complex conjugation function $τ: z \mapsto \overline z$. The resulting matrix agrees with the hermitian transpose if and only if the matrix is normal. Two other, as such elementary, approaches to define the complex conjugate of a matrix yield the same result.
