We consider the initial-value problem for the ``good'' Boussinesq equation on the line. Using inverse scattering techniques, the solution can be expressed in terms of the solution of a $3 \times 3$-matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem. We establish formulas for the long-time asymptotics of the solution by performing a Deift-Zhou steepest descent analysis of a regularized version of this Riemann-Hilbert problem.
We develop an inverse scattering transform formalism for the "good" Boussinesq equation on the line. Assuming that the solution exists, we show that it can be expressed in terms of the solution of a $3 \times 3$ matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem. The Riemann-Hilbert problem is formulated in terms of two reflection coefficients whose definitions involve only the initial data, and it has a form which makes it suitable for the evaluation of long-time asymptotics via Deift-Zhou steepest descent arguments.
We study the local well-posedness of the initial-value problem for the nonlinear "good" Boussinesq equation with data in Sobolev spaces \textit{$H^s$} for negative indices of $s$.
In this paper, we study various dissipative mechanics associated with the Boussinesq systems which model two-dimensional small amplitude long wavelength water waves. We will show that the decay rate for the damped one-directional model equations, such as the KdV and BBM equations, holds for some of the damped Boussinesq systems which model two-directional waves.
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic stability of certain stationary solution to Boussinesq equations without thermal conduction in the infinite flat strip $Ω=\mathbb{R}\times (0,1)$. It is shown that the solution starting from initial data close to the stationary solution will converge to it with explicit algebraic rates as time tends to infinity.
We investigate the asymptotic stability of solution to Boussinesq equations without thermal conduction with the initial data near a specific stationary solution in the three--dimensional domain $Ω= \mathbb{R}^{2}\times (0,1)$. It is shown that the solution starting from a small perturbation to the stationary solution converges to it with explicit algebraic rates as time tends to infinity.
We study the well-posedness of the initial-value problem for the periodic nonlinear "good" Boussinesq equation. We prove that this equation is local well-posed for initial data in Sobolev spaces \textit{$H^s(\T)$} for $s>-1/4$, the same range of the real case obtained in Farah \cite{LG4}.
We consider the Cauchy problem for an evolution equation modeling bidirectional surface waves in a convecting fluid. Under small condition on the initial value, the existence and asymptotic behavior of global solutions in some time weighted spaces are established by the contraction mapping principle.
In this paper we study the regularity properties of the "good" Boussinesq equation on the half line. We obtain local existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence on initial data in low-regularity spaces. Moreover we prove that the nonlinear part of the solution on the half line is smoother than the initial data, obtaining half derivative smoothing of the nonlinear term in some cases. Our paper improves the result in [Himonas-Mantzavinos 2015], being the first result that constructs solutions for the initial and boundary value problem of the "good" Boussinesq equation below the $L^2$ space. …
We address the asymptotic properties for the Boussinesq equations with vanishing thermal diffusivity in a bounded domain with no-slip boundary conditions. We show the dissipation of the $L^2$ norm of the velocity and its gradient, convergence of the $L^2$ norm of $Au$, and an $o(1)$-type exponential growth for $\Vert A^{3/2}u\Vert_{L^2}$. We also obtain that in the interior of the domain the gradient of the vorticity is bounded by a polynomial function of time.
We consider the 2D Boussinesq equations with a velocity damping term in a strip $\mathbb{T}\times[-1,1]$, with impermeable walls. In this physical scenario, where the \textit{Boussinesq approximation} is accurate when density/temperature variations are small, our main result is the asymptotic stability for a specific type of perturbations of a stratified solution. To prove this result, we use a suitably weighted energy space combined with linear decay, Duhamel's formula and "bootstrap" arguments.
In this paper, we first address the space-time decay properties for higher order derivatives of strong solutions to the Boussinesq system in the usual Sobolev space. The decay rates obtained here are optimal. The proof is based on a parabolic interpolation inequality, bootstrap argument and some weighted estimates. Secondly, we present a new solution integration formula for the Boussinesq system, which will be employed to establish the existence of strong solutions in scaling invariant function spaces. We further investigate the asymptotic profiles and decay properties of these strong solution…
This paper concerns the local well-posedness for the "good" Boussinesq equation subject to quasi-periodic initial conditions. By constructing a delicately and subtly iterative process together with an explicit combinatorial analysis, we show that there exists a unique solution for such a model in a small region of time. The size of this region depends on both the given data and the frequency vector involved. Moreover the local solution has an expansion with exponentially decaying Fourier coefficients.
We consider an initial boundary value problem of the multi-dimensional Boussinesq equations in the absence of thermal diffusion with velocity damping or velocity diffusion under the stress free boundary condition in horizontally periodic strip domain. We prove the global-in-time existence of classical solutions in high order Sobolev spaces satisfying high order compatibility conditions around the linearly stratified equilibrium, the convergence of the temperature to the asymptotic profile, and sharp decay rates of the velocity field and temperature fluctuation in all intermediate norms based o…
In this article we prove highly improved and flexible Strichartz-type estimates allowing us to generalize the asymptotics we obtained for a stratified and rotating incompressible Navier-Stokes system: for large (and less regular) initial data, we obtain global well-posedness, asymptotics (as the Rossby number $ε$ goes to zero) and convergence rates as a power of the small parameter $ε$. Our approach is lead by the special structure of the limit system: the 3D quasi-geostrophic system.
In a recent paper, we showed that the large $(x,t)$ behavior of a class of physically relevant solutions of Boussinesq's equation for water waves is described by ten main asymptotic sectors. In the sector adjacent to the positive $x$-axis, referred to as Sector I, we stated without proof an exact expression for the leading asymptotic term together with an error estimate. Here we provide a proof of this asymptotic formula.
The aim of this article is to extend previous works about the asymptotics of an ill-prepared fast rotating, highly stratified incompressible Navier-Stokes system. Thanks to improved Strichartz estimates, we are able not only to cover a case which was unanswered in our previous work (allowing bigger ill-prepared initial data) but also to reduce some assumptions on the initial data. In passing we also widen the range of some parameters and compare two methods to obtain dispersive estimates.
We prove that the "good" Boussinesq model with the periodic boundary condition is locally well-posed in the space $H^{s}\times H^{s-2}$ for $s > -3/8$. In the proof, we employ the normal form approach, which allows us to explicitly extract the rougher part of the solution. This also leads to the conclusion that the remainder is in a smoother space $C([0,T], H^{s+a}), where $0 <= a < \min (2s+1, 1/2)$. If we have a mean-zero initial data, this implies a smoothing effect of this order for the non-linearity. This is new even in the previously considered cases $s > -1/4$.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic stability for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes Boussinesq system around the Couette flow with small viscosity $ν$ and small thermal diffusion $μ$ in a finite channel. In particular, we prove that if the initial velocity and initial temperature $(v_{in},ρ_{in})$ satisfies $\|v_{in}-(y,0)\|_{H_{x,y}^2}\leq \e_0 \min\{ν,μ\}^{\f12}$ and $\|ρ_{in}-1\|_{H_x^{1}L_y^2}\leq \e_1 \min\{ν,μ\}^{\f{11}{12}}$ for some small $\e_0,\e_1$ independent of $ν, μ$, then for the solution of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes Boussinesq system, the velocity remains within $O(\m…
J.-Y. Chemin proved the convergence (as the Rossby number $ε$ goes to zero) of the solutions of the Primitive Equations to the solution of the 3D quasi-geostrophic system when the Froude number F = 1 that is when no dispersive property is available. The result was proved in the particular case where the kinematic viscosity $ν$ and the thermal diffusivity $ν$ ' are close. In this article we generalize this result for any choice of the viscosities, the key idea is to rely on a special feature of the quasi-geostrophic structure.
This work deals with the local rapid exponential stabilization for a Boussinesq system of KdV-KdV type introduced by J. Bona, M. Chen and J.-C. Saut. This is a model for the motion of small amplitude long waves on the surface of an ideal fluid. Here, we will consider the Boussinesq system of KdV-KdV type posed on a finite domain, with homogeneous Dirichlet--Neumann boundary controls acting at the right end point of the interval. Our goal is to build suitable integral transformations to get a feedback control law that leads to the stabilization of the system. More precisely, we will prove that …
We analyze the spectral stability of small-amplitude, periodic, traveling-wave solutions of a Boussinesq-Whitham system. These solutions are shown numerically to exhibit high-frequency instabilities when subject to bounded perturbations on the real line. We use a formal perturbation method to estimate the asymptotic behavior of these instabilities in the small-amplitude regime. We compare these asymptotic results with direct numerical computations. This is the second paper in a series of three that investigates high-frequency instabilities of Stokes waves.
We consider the generalized Good-Boussinesq model in one dimension, with power nonlinearity and data in the energy space $H^1\times L^2$. This model has solitary waves with speeds $-1<c<1$. When $|c|$ approaches 1, Bona and Sachs showed orbital stability of such waves. It is well-known from a work of Liu that for small speeds solitary waves are unstable. In this paper we consider in more detail the long time behavior of zero speed solitary waves, or standing waves. By using virial identities, in the spirit of Kowalczyk, Martel and Muñoz, we construct and characterize a manifold of even-odd ini…
We consider the Boussinesq equation on the line for a broad class of Schwartz initial data relevant for water waves. In a recent work, we identified ten main sectors describing the asymptotic behavior of the solution, and for each of these sectors we gave an exact expression for the leading asymptotic term in the case when no solitons are present. In this paper, we derive an asymptotic formula in Sector IV, characterized by $\frac{x}{t}\in (\frac{1}{\sqrt{3}},1)$, in the case when solitons are present. In particular, our results provide an exact expression for the soliton-radiation interaction…
We consider the long time behavior of weak and strong solutions of the n-dimensional viscous Boussinesq system in the half space, with $n\geq3$ . The $L^r(R^n_+)$-asymptotics of strong solutions and their first three derivatives, with $1\leq r\leq\infty$, are derived combining $L^q-L^r$ estimates and properties of the fractional powers of the Stokes operator. For the $L^\infty-$asymptotics of the second order derivatives the unboundedness of the projection operator $P: L^\infty(R^n_+)\rightarrow L^\infty_σ(R^n_+)$ is dealt by an appropriate decomposition of the nonlinear term.
We compute the sharp time decay rates of the solutions of the IVP for quasi-geostrophic equation and the Boussinesq model, subject to fractional dissipation. Moreover, we explicitly identify the asymptotic profiles, the kernel of the $α$ stable processes, which are analogues of the Oseen vortices.
In the present article, we prove the sharp local well-posedness and ill-posedness results for the "good" Boussinesq equation on $\mathbb{T}$; the initial value problem is locally well-posed in $H^{-1/2}(\mathbb{T})$ and ill-posed in $H^s(\mathbb{T})$ for $s<-1/2$. Well-posedness result is obtained from reduction of the problem into a quadratic nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the contraction argument in suitably modified $X^{s,b}$ spaces. The proof of the crucial bilinear estimates in these spaces, especially in the lowest regularity, rely on some bilinear estimates for one dimensional perio…
In this paper, we study the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the Couette flow in the stably stratified regime, namely the Richardson number $γ^2>\frac{1}{4}$. Precisely, we prove that if the initial perturbation $(u_{in},\vartheta_{in})$ of the Couette flow $v_s=(y,0)$ and the linear temperature $ρ_s=-γ^2y+1$ satisfies $\|u_{in}\|_{H^{s+1}}+\|\vartheta_{in}\|_{H^{s+2}}\leq ε_0ν^{\frac{1}{2}}$, then the asymptotic stability holds.
We study here some asymptotic models for the propagation of internal and surface waves in a two-fluid system. We focus on the so-called long wave regime for one dimensional waves, and consider the case of a flat bottom. Starting from the classical Boussinesq/Boussinesq system, we introduce a new family of equivalent symmetric hyperbolic systems. We study the well-posedness of such systems, and the asymptotic convergence of their solutions towards solutions of the full Euler system. Then, we provide a rigorous justification of the so-called KdV approximation, stating that any bounded solution o…
We prove a long time existence result for the solutions of a two-dimensional Boussinesq system modeling the propagation of long, weakly nonlinear water waves. This system is exceptional in the sense that it is the only linearly well-posed system in the (abcd) family of Boussinesq systems whose eigenvalues of the linearized system have nontrivial zeroes. This new difficulty is solved by the use of "good unknowns " and of normal form techniques.
This study deals with higher-ordered asymptotic equations for the water-waves problem. We considered the higher-order/extended Boussinesq equations over a flat bottom topography in the well-known long wave regime. Providing an existence and uniqueness of solution on a relevant time scale of order $1/\sqrt{\eps}$ and showing that the solution's behavior is close to the solution of the water waves equations with a better precision corresponding to initial data, the asymptotic model is well-posed in the sense of Hadamard. Then we compared several water waves solitary solutions with respect to the…
In this paper we deal with the long time existence for the Cauchy problem associated to BBM-type Boussinesq systems of equations which are asymptotic models for long wave, small amplitude gravity surface water waves. As opposed to previous papers devoted to the long time existence issue, we consider initial data with nontrivial behaviour at innity which may be used to model bore propagation.
The aim of this article is to prove new ill-posedness results concerning the nonlinear "good" Boussinesq equation, for both the periodic and non-periodic initial value problems. Specifically, we prove that the associated flow map is not continuous in Sobolev spaces $H^s$, for all $s<-1/2$.
The initial-value problem for a particular bidirectional Whitham system modelling surface water waves is under consideration. This system was recently introduced in [4]. It is numerically shown to be stable and a good approximation to the incompressible Euler equations. Here we prove local in time well-posedness. Our proof relies on an energy method and a compactness argument.
The inviscid 2D Boussinesq system with thermal diffusivity and multiplicative noise of transport type is studied in the $L^2$-setting. It is shown that, under a suitable scaling of the noise, weak solutions to the stochastic 2D Boussinesq equations converge weakly to the unique solution of the deterministic viscous Boussinesq system. Consequently, the transport noise asymptotically regularizes the inviscid 2D Boussinesq system and enhances dissipation in the limit.
In this paper, we study the existence and asymptotic properties of the traveling vortex pairs for the two-dimensional inviscid incompressible Boussinesq equations. We construct a family of traveling vorticity pairs, which constitutes the de-singularization of a pair of point vortices with equal intensity but opposite sign. Using the improved vorticity method, we also give limiting position of the supports of vorticities.

In this article we present ill-posedness results for generalized Boussinesq equations, which incorporate also the ones obtained by the authors for the classical "good" Boussinesq equation (arXiv:1202.6671). More precisely, we show that the associated flow map is not smooth for a range of Sobolev indices, thus providing a threshold for the regularity needed to perform a Picard iteration for these problems.
In this paper we deal with the long time existence for the Cauchy problem associated to some asymptotic models for long wave, small amplitude gravity surface waves. We generalize some of the results that can be found in the literature devoted to the study of Boussinesq systems by implementing an energy method on spectrally localized equations. In particular, we obtain better results in terms of the regularity level required to solve the initial value problem on large time scales.
In this article we consider the asymptotic stability of the two-dimensional Boussinesq equations with partial dissipation near a combination of Couette flow and temperature profiles $T(y)$. As a first main result we show that if $T'$ is of size at most $ν^{1/3}$ in a suitable norm, then the linearized Boussinesq equations with only vertical dissipation of the velocity but not of the temperature are stable. Thus, mixing enhanced dissipation can suppress Rayleigh-Bénard instability in this linearized case. We further show that these results extend to the (forced) nonlinear equations with vertica…
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for the generalized Boussinesq equation with initial data in modulation spaces $M^{s}_{p^\prime,q}(\mathbb{R}^n),$ $n\geq 1.$ After a decomposition of the Boussinesq equation in a $2\times 2$-nonlinear system, we obtain the existence of global and local solutions in several classes of functions with values in $ M^s_{p,q}\times D^{-1}JM^s_{p,q}$ spaces for suitable $p,q$ and $s,$ including the special case $p=2,q=1$ and $s=0.$ Finally, we prove some results of scattering and asymptotic stability in the framework of modulation spaces.
Through Borel summation methods, we analyze two different variations of the Navier-Stokes equation --the Boussinesq equation and the magnetic Benard equation. This method has previously been applied to the Navier-Stokes equation. We prove that an equivalent system of integral equations in each case has a unique solution, which is exponentially bounded for p in R^{+}, p being the Laplace dual variable of 1/t. This implies the local existence of a classical solution in a complex t-region that includes a real positive time (t)-axis segment. In this formalism, global existence of PDE solutions bec…
