In this paper we study the regularity properties of the "good" Boussinesq equation on the half line. We obtain local existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence on initial data in low-regularity spaces. Moreover we prove that the nonlinear part of the solution on the half line is smoother than the initial data, obtaining half derivative smoothing of the nonlinear term in some cases. Our paper improves the result in [Himonas-Mantzavinos 2015], being the first result that constructs solutions for the initial and boundary value problem of the "good" Boussinesq equation below the $L^2$ space. Our theorems are sharp within the framework of the restricted norm method that we use and match the known results on the full line in [Kenig-Ponce-Vega 1996] and [Farah 2009].
In this paper, we study the analytical smoothing effect of Cauchy problem for the incompressible Boussinesq equations. Precisely, we use the Fourier method to prove that the Sobolev H 1-solution to the incompressible Boussinesq equations in periodic domain is analytic for any positive time. So the incompressible Boussinesq equation admet exactly same smoothing effect properties of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations.
In this paper, we study the 3D regularized Boussinesq equations. The velocity equation is regularized à la Leray through a smoothing kernel of order $α$ in the nonlinear term and a $β$-fractional Laplacian; we consider the critical case $α+β=\frac{5}{4}$ and we assume $\frac 12 <β<\frac 54$. The temperature equation is a pure transport equation, where the transport velocity is regularized through the same smoothing kernel of order $α$. We prove global well posedness when the initial velocity is in $H^r$ and the initial temperature is in $H^{r-β}$ for $r>\max(2β,β+1)$. This regularity is enough…
We consider the long time behavior of weak and strong solutions of the n-dimensional viscous Boussinesq system in the half space, with $n\geq3$ . The $L^r(R^n_+)$-asymptotics of strong solutions and their first three derivatives, with $1\leq r\leq\infty$, are derived combining $L^q-L^r$ estimates and properties of the fractional powers of the Stokes operator. For the $L^\infty-$asymptotics of the second order derivatives the unboundedness of the projection operator $P: L^\infty(R^n_+)\rightarrow L^\infty_σ(R^n_+)$ is dealt by an appropriate decomposition of the nonlinear term.
We consider the initial value problem (IVP) associated to a Boussinesq type system. After rewriting the system in an equivalent form of coupled KdV-type equations, we prove that this is locally well-posed in $(H^s(\R^2))^4$, $s>3/2$, using sharp smoothing estimates. Consequently we obtain the local well-posedness result for the original system in $H^s\times \mathcal{V}^{s+1}$ for $s>3/2$ (see below for the definition of $\mathcal{V}^{s}$).
In this paper, for the 3-D Navier-Stokes-Boussinesq system with horizontal dissipation, where there is no smoothing effect on the vertical derivatives, we prove a uniqueness result of solutions $ (u,ρ)\in L^{\infty}_T\big( H^{0,s}\times H^{0,1-s}\big)$ with $ (\nabla_h u,\nabla_hρ)\in L^{2}_T\big( H^{0,s}\times H^{0,1-s}\big)$ and $s\in [1/2,1]$. As a consequence, we improve the conditions stated in the paper \cite{Miao} in order to obtain a global well-posedness result in the case of axisymmetric initial data.
This paper is devoted to the study of the Cauchy problem for the Boussinesq system with partial viscosity in dimension $N\geq3.$ First we prove a global existence result for data in Lorentz spaces satisfying a smallness condition which is at the scaling of the equations. Second, we get a uniqueness result in Besov spaces with {\it negative} indices of regularity (despite the fact that there is no smoothing effect on the temperature). The proof relies on a priori estimates with loss of regularity for the nonstationary Stokes system with convection. As a corollary, we obtain a global existence a…
We prove that the "good" Boussinesq model with the periodic boundary condition is locally well-posed in the space $H^{s}\times H^{s-2}$ for $s > -3/8$. In the proof, we employ the normal form approach, which allows us to explicitly extract the rougher part of the solution. This also leads to the conclusion that the remainder is in a smoother space $C([0,T], H^{s+a}), where $0 <= a < \min (2s+1, 1/2)$. If we have a mean-zero initial data, this implies a smoothing effect of this order for the non-linearity. This is new even in the previously considered cases $s > -1/4$.
The linearization of the classical Boussinesq system is solved explicitly in the case of nonzero boundary conditions on the half-line. The analysis relies on the unified transform method of Fokas and is performed in two different frameworks: (i) by exploiting the recently introduced extension of Fokas's method to systems of equations; (ii) by expressing the linearized classical Boussinesq system as a single, higher-order equation which is then solved via the usual version of the unified transform. The resulting formula provides a novel representation for the solution of the linearized classica…
We consider the Boussinesq PDE perturbed by a time-dependent forcing. Even though there is no smoothing effect for arbitrary smooth initial data, we are able to apply the method of self-consistent bounds to deduce the existence of smooth classical periodic solutions in the vicinity of 0. The proof is non-perturbative and relies on construction of periodic isolating segments in the Galerkin projections.
We establish the existence, uniqueness and attraction properties of an ergodic invariant measure for the Boussinesq Equations in the presence of a degenerate stochastic forcing acting only in the temperature equation and only at the largest spatial scales. The central challenge is to establish time asymptotic smoothing properties of the Markovian dynamics corresponding to this system. Towards this aim we encounter a Lie bracket structure in the associated vector fields with a complicated dependence on solutions. This leads us to develop a novel Hörmander-type condition for infinite-dimensional…
We establish a local-in-space short-time smoothing effect for the Navier-Stokes equations in the half space. The whole space analogue, due to Jia and Šverák [JŠ14], is a central tool in two of the authors' recent work on quantitative $L^3_x$ blow-up criteria [BP21]. The main difficulty is that the non-local effects of the pressure in the half space are much stronger than in the whole space. As an application, we demonstrate that the critical $L^3_x$ norm must concentrate at scales $\sim \sqrt{T^* - t}$ in the presence of a Type I blow-up.
In this article, we study an initial-boundary-value problem of the sixth order Boussinesq equation on a half line with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions: \[ u_{tt}-u_{xx}+βu_{xxxx}-u_{xxxxxx}+(u^2)_{xx}=0,\quad x>0\mbox{, }t>0,\] \[u(x,0)=φ(x), u_t(x,0)=ψ''(x),\] \[ u(0,t)=h_1(t), u_{xx}(0,t)=h_2(t), u_{xxxx}(0,t)=h_3(t),\] where $β=\pm1$. It is shown that the problem is locally well-posed in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^+)$ for $-\frac12<s\leq 0$ with initial condition $(φ,ψ)\in H^s(\mathbb{R}^+)\times H^{s-1}(\mathbb{R}^+)$ and boundary condition $(h_1,h_2,h_3) $ in the product space $H^{\frac{s+1}{3}}(…
We study the initial-boundary value problem for the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation. More precisely we study the wellposedness theory and the regularity properties of the DNLS equation on the half line. We prove almost sharp local wellposedness, nonlinear smoothing, and small data global wellposedness in the energy space. One of the obstructions is that the crucial gauge transformation we use replaces the boundary condition with a nonlocal one. We resolve this issue by running an additional fixed point argument. Our method also implies almost sharp local and small energy globa…
The global regularity problem for the Boussinesq system is a well known open problem in mathematical fluid dynamics. As a follow up to our work \cite{EJSI}, we give examples of finite-energy and Lipschitz continuous velocity field and density $(u_0,ρ_0)$ which are $C^\infty$-smooth away from the origin and belong to a natural local well-posedness class for the Boussinesq equation whose corresponding local solution becomes singular in finite time. That is, while the sup norm of the gradient of the velocity field and the density remain finite on the time interval $t\in [0,1)$, both quantities be…
In this paper, we are concerned with the tridimensional anisotropic Boussinesq equations which can be described by {equation*} {{array}{ll} (\partial_{t}+u\cdot\nabla)u-κΔ_{h} u+\nabla Π=ρe_{3},\quad(t,x)\in\mathbb{R}^{+}\times\mathbb{R}^{3}, (\partial_{t}+u\cdot\nabla)ρ=0, \text{div}u=0. {array}. {equation*} Under the assumption that the support of the axisymmetric initial data $ρ_{0}(r,z)$ does not intersect the axis $(Oz)$, we prove the global well-posedness for this system with axisymmetric initial data. We first show the growth of the quantity $\fracρr$ for large time by taking advantage …
We establish an instantaneous smoothing property for decaying solutions on the half-line $(0,+\infty)$ of certain degenerate Hilbert space-valued evolution equations arising in kinetic theory, including in particular the steady Boltzmann equation. Our results answer the two main open problems posed by Pogan and Zumbrun in their treatment of $H^1$ stable manifolds of such equations, showing that $L^2_{loc}$ solutions that remain sufficiently small in $L^\infty$ (i) decay exponentially, and (ii) are $C^\infty$ for $t>0$, hence lie eventually in the $H^1$ stable manifold constructed by Pogan and …
In this paper we study the local and global regularity properties of the Zakharov system on the half line with rough initial data. These properties include local and global wellposedness results, local and global smoothing results and the behavior of higher order Sobolev norms of the solutions. Smoothing means that the nonlinear part of the solution on the half line is smoother than the initial data. The gain in regularity coincides with the gain that was observed for the periodic Zakharov and the Zakharov on the real line. Uniqueness is proved in the class of smooth solutions. When the bounda…
We obtain probabilistic local well-posedness in quasilinear regimes for the Schrödinger half-wave equation with a cubic nonlinearity. We need to use a refined ansatz because of the lack of probabilistic smoothing in the Picard's iterations, which is due to the high-low-low frequency interactions. The proof is an adaptation of the method of Bringmann on the derivative nonlinear wave equation to Schrödinger-type equations. In addition, we discuss ill-posedness results for this equation.
The Boussinesq equations are known since the end of the XIXst century. However, the proliferation of various \textsc{Boussinesq}-type systems started only in the second half of the XXst century. Today they come under various flavours depending on the goals of the modeller. At the beginning of the XXIst century an effort to classify such systems, at least for even bottoms, was undertaken and developed according to both different physical regimes and mathematical properties, with special emphasis, in this last sense, on the existence of symmetry groups and their connection to conserved quantitie…
We consider refinements of the local smoothing estimates for the Schrödinger equation in domains which are exterior to a strictly convex obstacle in $\RR^n$. By restricting the solution to small, frequency dependent collars of the boundary, it is expected that taking its square integral in space-time should exhibit a larger gain in regularity when compared to the usual gain of half a derivative. By a result of Ivanovici, these refined local smoothing estimates are satisfied by solutions in the exterior of a ball. We show that when such estimates are valid, they can be combined with wave packet…
A reaction-diffusion equation with power nonlinearity formulated either on the half-line or on the finite interval with nonzero boundary conditions is shown to be locally well-posed in the sense of Hadamard for data in Sobolev spaces. The result is established via a contraction mapping argument, taking advantage of a novel approach that utilizes the formula produced by the unified transform method of Fokas for the forced linear heat equation to obtain linear estimates analogous to those previously derived for the nonlinear Schrödinger, Korteweg-de Vries and "good" Boussinesq equations. Thus, t…
In this paper we study the local and global regularity properties of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on the half line with rough initial data. These properties include local and global wellposedness results, local and global smoothing results and the behavior of higher order Sobolev norms of the solutions. In particular, we prove that the nonlinear part of the cubic NLS on the half line is smoother than the initial data. The gain in regularity coincides with the gain that was observed for the periodic cubic NLS \cite{et2} and the cubic NLS on the line \cite{erin}. We also prove …
In a recent article \textit{"Lower regularity solutions of the biharmonic Schrödinger equation in a quarter plane", to appear on Pacific Journal of Mathematics [15]}, the authors gave a starting point of the study on a series of problems concerning the initial boundary value problem and control theory of Biharmonic NLS in some non-standard domains. In this direction, this article deals to present answers for some questions left in [15] concerning the study of the cubic fourth order Schrödinger equation in a star graph structure $\mathcal{G}$. Precisely, consider $\mathcal{G}$ composed by $N$ e…
