In this paper, we investigate the long-time behavior of the two-dimensional incompressible Boussinesq system with kinematic viscosity in a periodic channel, focusing on instability and asymptotic stability near hydrostatic equilibria. Firstly, we prove that any hydrostatic equilibrium reveals long-time instability when the initial data are perturbed in Sobolev spaces of low regularity. Secondly, we establish asymptotic stability of the stratified density, which is strictly decreasing in the vertical direction, under sufficiently regular perturbations, proving that the solution converges to the unique minimizer of the total energy.
Our analysis is based on the energy method. Although the total energy dissipates due to kinematic viscosity, such mechanism cannot capture the stratification of the density. We overcome this difficulty by discovering another Lyapunov functional which exhibits the density stratification in a quantitative manner.
We show the existence of Hölder continuous periodic solution with compact support in time of the Boussinesq equations with partial viscosity. The Hölder regularity of the solution we constructed is anisotropic which is compatible with partial viscosity of the equations.
We study the existence, uniqueness as well as regularity issues for the two-dimensional incompressible Boussinesq equations with temperature-dependent thermal and viscosity diffusion coefficients in general Sobolev spaces. The optimal regularity exponent ranges are considered.
The present paper is dedicated to the global well-posedness issue for the Boussinesq system with the temperature-dependent viscosity in $\mathbb{R}^2.$ We aim at extending the work by Abidi and Zhang ( Adv. Math. 2017 (305) 1202--1249 ) to a supercritical dissipation for temperature.
We prove the global well-posedness of the two-dimensional Boussinesq equations with zero viscosity and positive diffusivity in bounded domains for rough initial data [ $u_{0}\in L^{2}$, $\text{curl}\,u_{0}\in L^{\infty}$ and $θ_{0}\in B^{2-2/p}_{q,p}$ with $p\in (1,\infty)$, $q\in (2,\infty)$ ]. Our method is based on the maximal regularity for heat equation.
In this paper, we discuss with the global well-posedness of 2D anisotropic nonlinear Boussinesq equations with any two positive viscosities and one positive thermal diffusivity. More precisely, for three kinds of viscous combinations, we obtain the global well-posedness without any assumption on the solution. For other three difficult cases, under the minimal regularity assumption, we also derive the unique global solution. To the authors' knowledge, our result is new even for the simplified model.
In this work we prove a global well-posedness result for a tridimensional rescaled Boussinesq system, with positive full viscosity and diffusivity parameters in the framework of critical Fourier-Besov spaces. This rescaled approach permits to know the behaviour of the system according to relations between both the parameters and the initial velocity and temperature; for instance, it is possible to consider, for small enough viscosity and large diffusivity, a large enough critical Fourier-Besov norm for the initial temperature and it is also possible to consider, for small enough diffusivity an…
In this paper, we investigate the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to 2D Boussinesq system with anisotropic thermal diffusion or anisotropic viscosity and with striated initial data. Using the key idea of Chemin to solve 2-D vortex patch of ideal fluid, namely the striated regularity can help to bound the gradient of the velocity, we can prove the global well-posedness of the Boussinesq system with anisotropic thermal diffusion with initial vorticity being discontinuous across some smooth interface. In the case of an anisotropic horizontal viscosity we can study the propagat…
Global Existence Results for the Anisotropic Boussinesq System in Dimension Two
We establish global-posedness in time for the viscous Boussinesq equations in two dimensions of space with temperature-dependent diffusivity in the framework of a smooth vortex patch. We also provide the inviscid limit for velocity, temperature, and associated flow toward the system studied very recently in \cite{Paicu-Zhu} as soon as the viscosity goes to zero, and quantify the rate of convergence.
In this paper we derive kinematic relations for quantities involving the rate of strain tensor and the Hessian of the pressure for solutions of the 3D Euler equations and the 2D Boussinesq equations. Using these kinematic relations, we prove new blow up criteria and obtain conditions for the absence of type I singularity for these equations. We obtain both global and localized versions of the results. Some of the new blow up criteria and type I conditions improve previous results of [3].

We address the persistence of regularity for the 2D $α$-fractional Boussinesq equations with positive viscosity and zero diffusivity in general Sobolev spaces, i.e., for $(u_{0}, ρ_{0}) \in W^{s,q}(\mathbb R^2) \times W^{s,q}(\mathbb R^2)$, where $s> 1$ and $q \in (2, \infty)$. We prove that the solution $(u(t), ρ(t))$ exists and belongs to $W^{s,q}(\mathbb R^2) \times W^{s,q}(\mathbb R^2)$ for all positive time $t$ for $q>2$, where $α\in(1,2)$ is arbitrary.
J.-Y. Chemin proved the convergence (as the Rossby number $ε$ goes to zero) of the solutions of the Primitive Equations to the solution of the 3D quasi-geostrophic system when the Froude number F = 1 that is when no dispersive property is available. The result was proved in the particular case where the kinematic viscosity $ν$ and the thermal diffusivity $ν$ ' are close. In this article we generalize this result for any choice of the viscosities, the key idea is to rely on a special feature of the quasi-geostrophic structure.
This paper considers the temperature patch problem for the incompressible Boussinesq system with no diffusion and viscosity in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^2$. We prove that for initial patches with $W^{2,\infty}$ boundary the curvature remains bounded for all time. The proof explores new cancellations that allow us to bound $\nabla^2u$, even for those components given by time dependent singular integrals with kernels with nonzero mean on circles. In addition, we give a different proof of the $C^{1+γ}$ regularity result in [23], $0<γ<1$, using the scale of Sobolev spaces for the velocity. Furth…
This paper establishes the nonlinear stability of the Couette flow for the 2D Boussinesq equations with only vertical dissipation. The Boussinesq equations concerned here model buoyancy-driven fluids such as atmospheric and oceanographic flows. Due to the presence of the buoyancy forcing, the energy of the standard Boussinesq equations could grow in time. It is the enhanced dissipation created by the linear non-self-adjoint operator $y\partial_x -ν\partial_{yy}$ in the perturbation equation that makes the nonlinear stability possible. When the initial perturbation from the Couette flow $(y, 0)…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic stability for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes Boussinesq system around the Couette flow with small viscosity $ν$ and small thermal diffusion $μ$ in a finite channel. In particular, we prove that if the initial velocity and initial temperature $(v_{in},ρ_{in})$ satisfies $\|v_{in}-(y,0)\|_{H_{x,y}^2}\leq \e_0 \min\{ν,μ\}^{\f12}$ and $\|ρ_{in}-1\|_{H_x^{1}L_y^2}\leq \e_1 \min\{ν,μ\}^{\f{11}{12}}$ for some small $\e_0,\e_1$ independent of $ν, μ$, then for the solution of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes Boussinesq system, the velocity remains within $O(\m…
We investigate the zero kinematic viscosity-magnetic diffusion limit of the incompressible viscous magnetohydrodynamic equations with Navier boundary conditions in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. We obtain the uniform regularity of solutions with respect to the kinematic viscosity coefficient and the magnetic diffusivity coefficient. These solutions are uniformly bounded in a conormal Sobolev space and $W^{1,\infty}(Ω)$ which allow us to take the zero kinematic viscosity-magnetic diffusion limit. Moreover, we also get the rates of convergence.
In Lipschitz two and three dimensional domains, we study the existence for the so--called Boussinesq model of thermally driven convection under singular forcing. By singular we mean that the heat source is allowed to belong to $H^{-1}(\varpi,Ω)$, where $\varpi$ is a weight in the Muckenhoupt class $A_2$ that is regular near the boundary. We propose a finite element scheme and, under the assumption that the domain is convex and $\varpi^{-1} \in A_1$, show its convergence. In the case that the thermal diffusion and viscosity are constants, we propose an a posteriori error estimator and show its …
We consider a Navier-Stokes-Voigt fluid model where the instantaneous kinematic viscosity has been completely replaced by a memory term incorporating hereditary effects, in presence of Ekman damping. The dissipative character of our model is weaker than the one where hereditary and instantaneous viscosity coexist, previously studied by Gal and Tachim-Medjo. Nevertheless, we prove the existence of a regular exponential attractor of finite fractal dimension under rather sharp assumptions on the memory kernel.
We derive a semi-geostrophic variational balance model for the three-dimensional Euler--Boussinesq equations on the non-traditional $f$-plane under the rigid lid approximation. The model is obtained by a small Rossby number expansion in the Hamilton principle, with no other approximations made. We allow for a fully non-hydrostatic flow and do not neglect the horizontal components of the Coriolis parameter, i.e., we do not make the so-called "traditional approximation". The resulting balance models have the same structure as the "$L_1$ balance model" for the primitive equations: a kinematic bal…
In this paper, the convergence of an algorithm for recovering the unknown kinematic viscosity of a two-dimensional incompressible, viscous fluid is studied. The algorithm of interest is a recursive feedback control-based algorithm that leverages observations that are received continuously-in-time, then dynamically provides updated values of the viscosity at judicious moments. It is shown that in an idealized setup, convergence to the true value of the viscosity can indeed be achieved under a natural and practically verifiable non-degeneracy condition. This appears to be first such result of it…
