In a recent study [DutykhDias2007] we presented a novel visco-potential free surface flows formulation. The governing equations contain local and nonlocal dissipative terms. From physical point of view, local dissipation terms come from molecular viscosity but in practical computations, rather eddy viscosity should be used. On the other hand, nonlocal dissipative term represents a correction due to the presence of a bottom boundary layer. Using the standard procedure of Boussinesq equations derivation, we come to nonlocal long wave equations. In this article we analyse dispersion relation properties of proposed models. The effect of nonlocal term on solitary and linear progressive waves attenuation is investigated. Finally, we present some computations with viscous Boussinesq equations solved by a Fourier type spectral method.
Physical damping, regarding the nonlinear Navier-Stokes viscous flow dynamics, refers to a tensorial turbulent dissipation term, attributed to adjacent moving macroscopic flow components. Mutual dissipation among these parts of fluid is described by a braking term in the momentum equation together with a heating term in the energy equation, both responsible of the damping of the momentum variation and of the viscous conversion of mechanical energy into heat. A macroscopic mixing scale length is currently the only characteristic length needed in the nonlinear modelling of viscous fluid dynamics…
In this work, we propose a SPH interpolating Kernel reformulation suitable also to treat free edge boundaries in the computational domain. Application to both inviscid and viscous stationary low compressibility accretion disc models in Close Binaries (CB) are shown. The investigation carried out in this paper is a consequence of the fact that a low compressibility modelling is crucial to check numerical reliability. Results show that physical viscosity supports a well-bound accretion disc formation, despite the low gas compressibility, when a Gaussian-derived Kernel (from the Error Function) i…
In the CLB method, a Bosanquet-type effective viscosity is employed to account for the rarefaction effect on the gas viscosity. To gain accurate simulations and to match the Bosanquet-type effective viscosity, the combined bounce-back/specular-reflection boundary scheme with a modified second-order slip boundary condition is adopted in the CLB method. The present method is applied to study gas flow in a microchannel with periodic boundary condition and gas flow in a long microchannel (the ratio of the length to the height L/H=100) with pressure boundary condition over a wide range of Knudsen n…
Viscous heating plays an important role in the dynamics of fluids with strongly temperature-dependent viscosity because of the coupling between the energy and momentum equations. The heat generated by viscous friction produces a local temperature increase near the tube walls with a consequent decrease of the viscosity which may dramatically change the temperature and velocity profiles. These processes are mainly controlled by the Peclét number, the Nahme number, the flow rate and the thermal boundary conditions. The problem of viscous heating in fluids was investigated in the past for its prac…
An analytic solution to the linearized Navier-Stokes equation is given that describes the radial flow of an incompressible, viscous fluid between two parallel, concentric annular plates.
Viscous heating can play an important role in the dynamics of fluids with strongly temperature-dependent viscosities because of the coupling between the energy and momentum equations. The heat generated by viscous friction produces a local temperature increase near the tube walls with a consequent decrease of the viscosity and a strong stratification in the viscosity profile. The problem of viscous heating in fluids was investigated and reviewed by Costa & Macedonio (2003) because of its important implications in the study of magma flows. Because of the strong coupling between viscosity and te…
A hierarchy of mathematical models describing viscosity-stratified flow in a Hele-Shaw cell is constructed. Numerical modelling of jet flow and development of viscous fingers with the influence of inertia and friction is carried out. One-dimensional multi-layer flows are studied. In the framework of three-layer flow the interpretation of the Saffman--Taylor instability is given. A kinematic-wave model of viscous fingering taking into account friction between the fluid layers is proposed. Comparison with calculations on the basis of two-dimensional equations shows that this model allows to dete…
Recent experimental studies have shown that particle transfer across streamlines can be controlled passively using stratified flows of co-flowing streams at a finite Reynolds number. The stratification modifies the forces acting on particles through the curvature of the undisturbed velocity profile. In this study, we numerically analyze the particle migration in stratified flow of two liquids of different viscosities flowing parallel to each other between two infinite parallel plates. Particle migration in two different flow fields is considered: (i) Couette flow and (ii) Poiseuille flow. A nu…
In the above paper an analysis has been carried out to obtain results in the Couette flow of a Newtonian fluid with viscous dissipation and temperature dependent viscosity. The fluid viscosity is an exponential function of temperature. Exact analytical solutions are obtained for the calculation of velocity and temperature. However, there are some fundamental errors in this paper which are presented herein.
The Brinkman equation has found great popularity in modelling the interfacial flow between free fluid and a porous medium. However, it is still unclear how to determine an appropriate effective Brinkman viscosity without resolving the flow at the pore scale. Here, we propose to determine the Brinkman viscosity for rough porous media from the interface slip length and the interior permeability. Both slip and permeability can be determined from unit-cell analysis, thus enabling an a priori estimate of the effective viscosity. By comparing the velocity distribution in the porous material predicte…
Motivated by the concept of eddy viscosity tensor in improved Boussinesq hypothesis, a transport model of high-order eddy viscosity tensor in 2D-3C turbulence structure is derived from the second-order moment model by tensorial analysis.
We derive the flow field disturbance produced by point viscosity variations in a heterogeneous fluid when subject to a background flow while neglecting fluid inertia. The disturbance flow field is found to be identical to that generated by a force-dipole called stresslet. Using a combination of theory and numerical simulations, we show how the hydrodynamics of an active rigid particle is altered due to the presence of point viscosity variations, and how this can be exploited to manipulate and steer them in microfluidic environments.
The velocity and friction properties of laminar pipe flow of a viscoelastic solution are bounded by the corresponding values for two Newtonian fluids, namely, the solvent and a fluid with a viscosity identical to the total viscosity of the solution. The lower friction factor for the flow of the solution when compared to the latter is tracked to an increased strain rate needed to enhance viscous dissipation. Lastly, we show analytically that the effective viscosity varies similarly to the radial diagonal component of the conformation tensor as observed numerically in turbulent flows, and give a…
In this study we consider the problem of the interface motion under the capillary-gravity and an external electric forces. The infinitely deep fluid layer is assumed to be viscous, perfectly conducting and the flow to be incompressible. The weak viscous effects are introduced using the Helmholtz-Leray decomposition and the visco-potential flow approach. The electric charge distributions above and on the free surface are considered. Finally, we derive some linearized analytical solutions for the free surface elevation shape under the localised pressure distribution and the combined action of th…
Considered here is the derivation of partial differential equations arising in pulsatile flow in pipes with viscoelastic walls. The equations are asymptotic models describing the propagation of long-crested pulses in pipes with cylindrical symmetry. Additional effects due to viscous stresses in bio-fluids are also taken into account. The effects of viscoelasticity of the vessels on the propagation of solitary and periodic waves in a vessel of constant radius are being explored numerically.
Negative viscosity seems to be an impossible parameter for any thermodynamic system. But for some special boundary conditions the viscosity of a fluid has apparently become negative, like for secondary flow of a fluid or in a plasma flow interacting with a dominant magnetic field. This work studied the effect of negative viscosity for a fluid flow over a cylinder. Four different viscosities are considered, in which the positive viscosities of Air and CO2 has been considered at 300 K temperature and their negative pair of viscosities are considered in this work. The results show a vast differen…
Starting from stationary bifurcations in Couette-Dean flow, we compute nontrivial stationary solutions in inertialess viscoelastic circular Couette flow. These solutions are strongly localized vortex pairs, exist at arbitrarily large wavelengths, and show hysteresis in the Weissenberg number, similar to experimentally observed ``diwhirl'' patterns. Based on the computed velocity and stress fields, we elucidate a heuristic, fully nonlinear mechanism for these flows. We propose that these localized, fully nonlinear structures comprise fundamental building blocks for complex spatiotemporal dynami…
Plane Couette flow of visco-elastic fluids is shown to exhibit a purely elastic subcritical instability in spite of being linearly stable. The mechanism of this instability is proposed and the nonlinear stability analysis of plane Couette flow of the Upper-Convected Maxwell fluid is presented. It is found that above the critical Weissenberg number, a small finite-size perturbation is sufficient to create a secondary flow, and the threshold value for the amplitude of the perturbation decreases as the Weissenberg number increases. The results suggest a scenario for weakly turbulent visco-elastic…
We study the behavior of the pulse waves of water into a flexible tube for application to blood flow simulations. In pulse waves both fluid friction and wall viscosity are damping factors, and difficult to evaluate separately. In this paper, the coefficients of fluid friction and wall viscosity are estimated by fitting a nonlinear 1D flow model to experimental data. In the experimental setup, a distensible tube is connected to a piston pump at one end and closed at another end. The pressure and wall displacements are measured simultaneously. A good agreement between model predictions and exper…
The linear stability of viscous Keplerian flow around a gravitating center is studied using the rheological granular fluid model. The linear rheological instability triggered by the interplay of the shear rheology and Keplerian differential rotation of incompressible dense granular fluids is found. Instability sets in granular fluids, where the viscosity parameter grows faster than the square of the local shear rate (strain rate) at constant pressure. Found instability can play a crucial role in the dynamics of dense planetary rings and granular flows in protoplanetary disks.
A stationary viscous jet falling from an oriented nozzle onto a moving surface is studied, both theoretically and experimentally. We distinguish three flow regimes and classify them by the convexity of the jet shape (concave, vertical and convex). The fluid is modeled as a Newtonian fluid, and the model for the flow includes viscous effects, inertia and gravity. By studying the characteristics of the conservation of momentum for a dynamic jet, the boundary conditions for each flow regime are derived, and the flow regimes are characterized in terms of the process and material parameters. The mo…
Linearized stability of incompressible viscous fluid flows in a thin spherical shell is studied by using the two-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations on a sphere. The stationary flow on the sphere has two singularities (a sink and a source) at the North and South poles of the sphere. We prove analytically for the linearized Navier--Stokes equations that the stationary flow is asymptotically stable. When the spherical layer is truncated between two symmetrical rings, we study eigenvalues of the linearized equations numerically by using power series solutions and show that the stationary flow re…
