We study here some asymptotic models for the propagation of internal and surface waves in a two-fluid system. We focus on the so-called long wave regime for one dimensional waves, and consider the case of a flat bottom. Starting from the classical Boussinesq/Boussinesq system, we introduce a new family of equivalent symmetric hyperbolic systems. We study the well-posedness of such systems, and the asymptotic convergence of their solutions towards solutions of the full Euler system. Then, we provide a rigorous justification of the so-called KdV approximation, stating that any bounded solution of the full Euler system can be decomposed into four propagating waves, each of them being well approximated by the solutions of uncoupled Korteweg-de Vries equations. Our method also applies for models with the rigid lid assumption, and the precise behavior of the KdV approximations depending on the depth and density ratios is discussed for both rigid lid and free surface configurations. The fact that we obtain {\it simultaneously} the four KdV equations allows us to study extensively the influence of the rigid lid assumption on the evolution of the interface, and therefore its domain of validity. Finally, solutions of the Boussinesq/Boussinesq systems and the KdV approximation are rigorously compared and numerically computed.
This work deals with the local rapid exponential stabilization for a Boussinesq system of KdV-KdV type introduced by J. Bona, M. Chen and J.-C. Saut. This is a model for the motion of small amplitude long waves on the surface of an ideal fluid. Here, we will consider the Boussinesq system of KdV-KdV type posed on a finite domain, with homogeneous Dirichlet--Neumann boundary controls acting at the right end point of the interval. Our goal is to build suitable integral transformations to get a feedback control law that leads to the stabilization of the system. More precisely, we will prove that …
We consider a Boussinesq system of KdV-KdV type introduced by J. Bona, M. Chen and J.-C. Saut as a model for the motion of small amplitude long waves on the surface of an ideal fluid. This system of two equations can describe the propagation of waves in both directions, while the single KdV equation is limited to unidirectional waves. We are concerned here with the exact controllability of the Boussinesq system by using some boundary controls. By reducing the controllability problem to a spectral problem which is solved by using the Paley-Wiener method introduced by the third author for KdV, w…
We are interested in the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), the Burgers, and the Whitham limit for a spatially periodic Boussinesq model with non-small contrast. We prove estimates between the KdV, the Burgers, and the Whitham approximation and true solutions of the original system which guarantee that these amplitude equations make correct predictions about the dynamics of the spatially periodic Boussinesq model over the natural time scales of the amplitude equations. The proof is based on Bloch wave analysis and energy estimates. The result is the first justification result of the KdV, the Burgers, an…
We consider in this paper the well-posedness for the Cauchy problem associated to two-dimensional dispersive systems of Boussinesq type which model weakly nonlinear long wave surface waves. We emphasize the case of the {\it strongly dispersive} ones with focus on the "KdV-KdV" system which possesses the strongest dispersive properties and which is a vector two-dimensional extension of the classical KdV equation.
In order to investigate corrections to the common KdV approximation to long waves, we derive modulation equations for the evolution of long wavelength initial data for a Boussinesq equation. The equations governing the corrections to the KdV approximation are explicitly solvable and we prove estimates showing that they do indeed give a significantly better approximation than the KdV equation alone. We also present the results of numerical experiments which show that the error estimates we derive are essentially optimal.
In this paper, we study various dissipative mechanics associated with the Boussinesq systems which model two-dimensional small amplitude long wavelength water waves. We will show that the decay rate for the damped one-directional model equations, such as the KdV and BBM equations, holds for some of the damped Boussinesq systems which model two-directional waves.
This paper is devoted to the study of the long wave approximation for water waves under the influence of the gravity and a Coriolis forcing. We start by deriving a generalization of the Boussinesq equations in 1D (in space) and we rigorously justify them as an asymptotic model of the water waves equations. These new Boussinesq equations are not the classical Boussinesq equations. A new term due to the vorticity and the Coriolis forcing appears that can not be neglected. Then, we study the Boussinesq regime and we derive and fully justify different asymptotic models when the bottom is flat : a …
In this paper we are concerned with a nonlocal system to model the propagation of internal waves in a two-layer interface problem with rigid lid assumption and under a Boussinesq regime for both fluids. The main goal is to investigate aspects of well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the deviation of the interface and the velocity, as well as the existence of solitary wave solutions and some of their properties.
The aim of this article is to derive surface wave models in the presence of surface tension and viscosity. Using the Navier-Stokes equations with a free surface, flat bottom and surface tension, we derive the viscous 2D Boussinesq system with a weak transverse variation. The assumed transverse variation is on a larger scale than along the main propagation direction. This Boussinesq system is proved to be consistent with the Navier-Stokes equations. This system is only an intermediate result that enables us to derive the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation which is a 2D generalization of the K…
In this paper we focus on the water waves problem for uneven bottoms on a two-dimensionnal domain. Starting from the symmetric Boussinesq systems derived in [Chazel, Influence of topography on long water waves, 2007], we recover the uncoupled Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) approximation justified by Schneider and Wayne for flat bottoms, and by Iguchi in the context of bottoms tending to zero at infinity at a substantial rate. The goal of this paper is to investigate the validity of this approximation for more general bathymetries. We exhibit two kinds of topography for which this approximation diverg…
In this paper a three-parameter family of Boussinesq systems is studied. The systems have been proposed as models of the propagation of long internal waves along the interface of a two-layer system of fluids with rigid-lid condition for the upper layer and under a Boussinesq regime for the flow in both layers. We first present some theoretical properties of well-posedness, conservation laws and Hamiltonian structure of the systems. Then the corresponding periodic initial-value problem is discretized in space by the spectral Fourier Galerkin method and for each system, error estimates for the s…
This paper is concerned with the control properties of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation posed on a bounded interval with a distributed control. When the control region is an arbitrary open subdomain, we prove the null controllability of the KdV equation by means of a new Carleman inequality. As a consequence, we obtain a regional controllability result, the state function being controlled on the left part of the complement of the control region. Finally, when the control region is a neighborhood of the right endpoint, an exact controllability result in a weighted L2 space is also establish…
The aim of this paper is to establish the existence of solitary wave solutions for two classes of two-layers systems modeling the propagation of internal waves. More precisely we will consider the Boussinesq-Full dispersion system and the Intermediate Long Wave (ILW) system together with its Benjamin-Ono (BO) limit.
We study the relevance of various scalar equations, such as inviscid Burgers', Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), extended KdV, and higher order equations (of Camassa-Holm type), as asymptotic models for the propagation of internal waves in a two-fluid system. These scalar evolution equations may be justified with two approaches. The first method consists in approximating the flow with two decoupled, counterpropagating waves, each one satisfying such an equation. One also recovers homologous equations when focusing on a given direction of propagation, and seeking unidirectional approximate solutions. Th…
In this paper, we derive asymptotic models for the propagation of two and three-dimensional gravity waves at the free surface and the interface between two layers of immiscible fluids of different densities, over an uneven bottom. We assume the thickness of the upper and lower fluids to be of comparable size, and small compared to the characteristic wavelength of the system (shallow water regimes). Following a method introduced by Bona, Lannes and Saut based on the expansion of the involved Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators, we are able to give a rigorous justification of classical models for wea…
In this paper we study some theoretical and numerical issues of the Boussinesq/Full dispersion system. This is a a three-parameter system of pde's that models the propagation of internal waves along the interface of two-fluid layers with rigid lid condition for the upper layer, and under a Boussinesq regime for the upper layer and a full dispersion regime for the lower layer. We first discretize in space the periodic initial-value problem with a Fourier-Galerkin spectral method and prove error estimates for several ranges of values of the parameters. Solitary waves of the model systems are the…
In this paper the permanent profile waves governed by a Boussinesq-type wave equation are analysed. The model involves displacement-type nonlinearities and dispersion terms. Physically such a model equation describes longitudinal waves (density change) in biomembranes which have an internal structure composed by lipid molecules. The possible solutions are constructed and analysed. The phase plane analysis and numerical simulation reveal a novel phenomenon: the possible existence of a soliton doublet.
We are interested in asymptotic models for the propagation of internal waves at the interface between two shallow layers of immiscible fluid, under the rigid-lid assumption. We review and complete existing works in the literature, in order to offer a unified and comprehensive exposition. Anterior models such as the shallow water and Boussinesq systems, as well as unidirectional models of Camassa-Holm type, are shown to descend from a broad Green-Naghdi model, that we introduce and justify in the sense of consistency. Contrarily to earlier works, our Green-Naghdi model allows a non-flat topogra…
Consideration is given to the influence of an underwater landslide on waves at the surface of a shallow body of fluid. The equations of motion which govern the evolution of the barycenter of the landslide mass include various dissipative effects due to bottom friction, internal energy dissipation, and viscous drag. The surface waves are studied in the Boussinesq scaling, with time-dependent bathymetry. A numerical model for the Boussinesq equations is introduced which is able to handle time-dependent bottom topography, and the equations of motion for the landslide and surface waves are solved …
