In this paper, we study various dissipative mechanics associated with the Boussinesq systems which model two-dimensional small amplitude long wavelength water waves. We will show that the decay rate for the damped one-directional model equations, such as the KdV and BBM equations, holds for some of the damped Boussinesq systems which model two-directional waves.
In this article we consider the Boussinesq system supplemented with some dissipation terms. These equations model the propagation of a waterwave in shallow water. We prove the existence of a global smooth attractor for the corresponding dynamical system.
We consider the Cauchy problem for an evolution equation modeling bidirectional surface waves in a convecting fluid. Under small condition on the initial value, the existence and asymptotic behavior of global solutions in some time weighted spaces are established by the contraction mapping principle.
In this paper we establish local-in-time existence and uniqueness of strong solutions in $H^s$ for $s > \frac{n}{2}$ to the viscous, zero thermal-diffusive Boussinesq equations in $\mathbb{R}^n , n = 2,3$. Beale-Kato-Majda type blow-up criterion has been established in three-dimensions with respect to the $BMO$-norm of the vorticity. We further prove the local-in-time existence and blow-up criterion for non-viscous and fully ideal Boussinesq systems. Commutator estimates due to Kato and Ponce (1988) \cite {KP} and Fefferman et. al. (2014) \cite {Fe} play important roles in the calculations.
The three-dimensional incompressible Boussinesq system is one of the important equations in fluid dynamics. The system describes the motion of temperature-dependent incompressible flows. And the temperature naturally has diffusion. Recently, Elgindi, Ghoul and Masmoudi constructed a $C^{1,α}$ finite time blow-up solutions for Euler systems with finite energy. Inspired by their works, we constructed $C^{1,α}$ finite time blow-up solution for Boussinesq equations where the temperature has diffusion and finite energy. Generally speaking, the diffusion of temperature smooths the solution of the sy…
We consider the initial value problem for the inviscid Primitive and Boussinesq equations in three spatial dimensions. We recast both systems as an abstract Euler-type system and apply the methods of convex integration of De Lellis and Székelyhidi to show the existence of infinitely many global weak solutions of the studied equations for general initial data. We also introduce an appropriate notion of dissipative solutions and show the existence of suitable initial data which generate infinitely many dissipative solutions.
The classical theory of water waves is based on the theory of inviscid flows. However it is important to include viscous effects in some applications. Two models are proposed to add dissipative effects in the context of the Boussinesq equations, which include the effects of weak dispersion and nonlinearity in a shallow water framework. The dissipative Boussinesq equations are then integrated numerically.
We consider a dissipative, dispersive system of Boussinesq type, describing wave phenomena in settings where dissipation has an effect. Examples include undular bores in rivers or oceans where dissipation due to turbulence is important for their description. We show that the model system admits traveling wave solutions known as diffusive-dispersive shock waves, and we categorize them into oscillatory and regularized shock waves depending on the relationship between dispersion and dissipation. Comparison of numerically computed solutions with laboratory data suggests that undular bores are accu…
In this article, we study the long time behavior of solutions of a variant of the Boussinesq system in which the equation for the velocity is parabolic while the equation for the temperature is hyperbolic. We prove that the system has a global attractor which retains some of the properties of the global attractors for the 2D and 3D Navier-Stokes equations. Moreover, this attractor contains infinitely many invariant manifolds in which several universal properties of the Batchelor, Kraichnan, Leith theory of turbulence are potentially present.
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic stability of certain stationary solution to Boussinesq equations without thermal conduction in the infinite flat strip $Ω=\mathbb{R}\times (0,1)$. It is shown that the solution starting from initial data close to the stationary solution will converge to it with explicit algebraic rates as time tends to infinity.
The water wave theory traditionally assumes the fluid to be perfect, thus neglecting all effects of the viscosity. However, the explanation of several experimental data sets requires the explicit inclusion of dissipative effects. In order to meet these practical problems, the theory of visco-potential flows has been developed (see P.-F. Liu & A. Orfila (2004) and D. Dutykh & F. Dias (2007)). Then, usually this formulation is further simplified by developing the potential in an entire series in the vertical coordinate and by introducing thus, the long wave approximation. In the present study we…
We investigate the asymptotic stability of solution to Boussinesq equations without thermal conduction with the initial data near a specific stationary solution in the three--dimensional domain $Ω= \mathbb{R}^{2}\times (0,1)$. It is shown that the solution starting from a small perturbation to the stationary solution converges to it with explicit algebraic rates as time tends to infinity.
We address the asymptotic properties for the Boussinesq equations with vanishing thermal diffusivity in a bounded domain with no-slip boundary conditions. We show the dissipation of the $L^2$ norm of the velocity and its gradient, convergence of the $L^2$ norm of $Au$, and an $o(1)$-type exponential growth for $\Vert A^{3/2}u\Vert_{L^2}$. We also obtain that in the interior of the domain the gradient of the vorticity is bounded by a polynomial function of time.
We consider the 2D Boussinesq equations with a velocity damping term in a strip $\mathbb{T}\times[-1,1]$, with impermeable walls. In this physical scenario, where the \textit{Boussinesq approximation} is accurate when density/temperature variations are small, our main result is the asymptotic stability for a specific type of perturbations of a stratified solution. To prove this result, we use a suitably weighted energy space combined with linear decay, Duhamel's formula and "bootstrap" arguments.
In this paper, we first address the space-time decay properties for higher order derivatives of strong solutions to the Boussinesq system in the usual Sobolev space. The decay rates obtained here are optimal. The proof is based on a parabolic interpolation inequality, bootstrap argument and some weighted estimates. Secondly, we present a new solution integration formula for the Boussinesq system, which will be employed to establish the existence of strong solutions in scaling invariant function spaces. We further investigate the asymptotic profiles and decay properties of these strong solution…
We consider an initial boundary value problem of the multi-dimensional Boussinesq equations in the absence of thermal diffusion with velocity damping or velocity diffusion under the stress free boundary condition in horizontally periodic strip domain. We prove the global-in-time existence of classical solutions in high order Sobolev spaces satisfying high order compatibility conditions around the linearly stratified equilibrium, the convergence of the temperature to the asymptotic profile, and sharp decay rates of the velocity field and temperature fluctuation in all intermediate norms based o…
In this article we prove highly improved and flexible Strichartz-type estimates allowing us to generalize the asymptotics we obtained for a stratified and rotating incompressible Navier-Stokes system: for large (and less regular) initial data, we obtain global well-posedness, asymptotics (as the Rossby number $ε$ goes to zero) and convergence rates as a power of the small parameter $ε$. Our approach is lead by the special structure of the limit system: the 3D quasi-geostrophic system.
We obtain a family of nonlinear maximum principles for linear dissipative nonlocal operators, that are general, robust, and versatile. We use these nonlinear bounds to provide transparent proofs of global regularity for critical SQG and critical d-dimensional Burgers equations. In addition we give applications of the nonlinear maximum principle to the global regularity of a slightly dissipative anti-symmetric perturbation of 2d incompressible Euler equations and generalized fractional dissipative 2d Boussinesq equations.
The aim of this article is to extend previous works about the asymptotics of an ill-prepared fast rotating, highly stratified incompressible Navier-Stokes system. Thanks to improved Strichartz estimates, we are able not only to cover a case which was unanswered in our previous work (allowing bigger ill-prepared initial data) but also to reduce some assumptions on the initial data. In passing we also widen the range of some parameters and compare two methods to obtain dispersive estimates.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic stability for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes Boussinesq system around the Couette flow with small viscosity $ν$ and small thermal diffusion $μ$ in a finite channel. In particular, we prove that if the initial velocity and initial temperature $(v_{in},ρ_{in})$ satisfies $\|v_{in}-(y,0)\|_{H_{x,y}^2}\leq \e_0 \min\{ν,μ\}^{\f12}$ and $\|ρ_{in}-1\|_{H_x^{1}L_y^2}\leq \e_1 \min\{ν,μ\}^{\f{11}{12}}$ for some small $\e_0,\e_1$ independent of $ν, μ$, then for the solution of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes Boussinesq system, the velocity remains within $O(\m…
J.-Y. Chemin proved the convergence (as the Rossby number $ε$ goes to zero) of the solutions of the Primitive Equations to the solution of the 3D quasi-geostrophic system when the Froude number F = 1 that is when no dispersive property is available. The result was proved in the particular case where the kinematic viscosity $ν$ and the thermal diffusivity $ν$ ' are close. In this article we generalize this result for any choice of the viscosities, the key idea is to rely on a special feature of the quasi-geostrophic structure.
This work deals with the local rapid exponential stabilization for a Boussinesq system of KdV-KdV type introduced by J. Bona, M. Chen and J.-C. Saut. This is a model for the motion of small amplitude long waves on the surface of an ideal fluid. Here, we will consider the Boussinesq system of KdV-KdV type posed on a finite domain, with homogeneous Dirichlet--Neumann boundary controls acting at the right end point of the interval. Our goal is to build suitable integral transformations to get a feedback control law that leads to the stabilization of the system. More precisely, we will prove that …
We analyze the spectral stability of small-amplitude, periodic, traveling-wave solutions of a Boussinesq-Whitham system. These solutions are shown numerically to exhibit high-frequency instabilities when subject to bounded perturbations on the real line. We use a formal perturbation method to estimate the asymptotic behavior of these instabilities in the small-amplitude regime. We compare these asymptotic results with direct numerical computations. This is the second paper in a series of three that investigates high-frequency instabilities of Stokes waves.
We consider the long time behavior of weak and strong solutions of the n-dimensional viscous Boussinesq system in the half space, with $n\geq3$ . The $L^r(R^n_+)$-asymptotics of strong solutions and their first three derivatives, with $1\leq r\leq\infty$, are derived combining $L^q-L^r$ estimates and properties of the fractional powers of the Stokes operator. For the $L^\infty-$asymptotics of the second order derivatives the unboundedness of the projection operator $P: L^\infty(R^n_+)\rightarrow L^\infty_σ(R^n_+)$ is dealt by an appropriate decomposition of the nonlinear term.
We compute the sharp time decay rates of the solutions of the IVP for quasi-geostrophic equation and the Boussinesq model, subject to fractional dissipation. Moreover, we explicitly identify the asymptotic profiles, the kernel of the $α$ stable processes, which are analogues of the Oseen vortices.
In this paper, we study the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the Couette flow in the stably stratified regime, namely the Richardson number $γ^2>\frac{1}{4}$. Precisely, we prove that if the initial perturbation $(u_{in},\vartheta_{in})$ of the Couette flow $v_s=(y,0)$ and the linear temperature $ρ_s=-γ^2y+1$ satisfies $\|u_{in}\|_{H^{s+1}}+\|\vartheta_{in}\|_{H^{s+2}}\leq ε_0ν^{\frac{1}{2}}$, then the asymptotic stability holds.
We study here some asymptotic models for the propagation of internal and surface waves in a two-fluid system. We focus on the so-called long wave regime for one dimensional waves, and consider the case of a flat bottom. Starting from the classical Boussinesq/Boussinesq system, we introduce a new family of equivalent symmetric hyperbolic systems. We study the well-posedness of such systems, and the asymptotic convergence of their solutions towards solutions of the full Euler system. Then, we provide a rigorous justification of the so-called KdV approximation, stating that any bounded solution o…
This study deals with higher-ordered asymptotic equations for the water-waves problem. We considered the higher-order/extended Boussinesq equations over a flat bottom topography in the well-known long wave regime. Providing an existence and uniqueness of solution on a relevant time scale of order $1/\sqrt{\eps}$ and showing that the solution's behavior is close to the solution of the water waves equations with a better precision corresponding to initial data, the asymptotic model is well-posed in the sense of Hadamard. Then we compared several water waves solitary solutions with respect to the…
In this paper we deal with the long time existence for the Cauchy problem associated to BBM-type Boussinesq systems of equations which are asymptotic models for long wave, small amplitude gravity surface water waves. As opposed to previous papers devoted to the long time existence issue, we consider initial data with nontrivial behaviour at innity which may be used to model bore propagation.
In this paper, we study the existence and asymptotic properties of the traveling vortex pairs for the two-dimensional inviscid incompressible Boussinesq equations. We construct a family of traveling vorticity pairs, which constitutes the de-singularization of a pair of point vortices with equal intensity but opposite sign. Using the improved vorticity method, we also give limiting position of the supports of vorticities.

In a recent paper, we showed that the large $(x,t)$ behavior of a class of physically relevant solutions of Boussinesq's equation for water waves is described by ten main asymptotic sectors. In the sector adjacent to the positive $x$-axis, referred to as Sector I, we stated without proof an exact expression for the leading asymptotic term together with an error estimate. Here we provide a proof of this asymptotic formula.
In this paper we deal with the long time existence for the Cauchy problem associated to some asymptotic models for long wave, small amplitude gravity surface waves. We generalize some of the results that can be found in the literature devoted to the study of Boussinesq systems by implementing an energy method on spectrally localized equations. In particular, we obtain better results in terms of the regularity level required to solve the initial value problem on large time scales.
In this article we consider the asymptotic stability of the two-dimensional Boussinesq equations with partial dissipation near a combination of Couette flow and temperature profiles $T(y)$. As a first main result we show that if $T'$ is of size at most $ν^{1/3}$ in a suitable norm, then the linearized Boussinesq equations with only vertical dissipation of the velocity but not of the temperature are stable. Thus, mixing enhanced dissipation can suppress Rayleigh-Bénard instability in this linearized case. We further show that these results extend to the (forced) nonlinear equations with vertica…
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for the generalized Boussinesq equation with initial data in modulation spaces $M^{s}_{p^\prime,q}(\mathbb{R}^n),$ $n\geq 1.$ After a decomposition of the Boussinesq equation in a $2\times 2$-nonlinear system, we obtain the existence of global and local solutions in several classes of functions with values in $ M^s_{p,q}\times D^{-1}JM^s_{p,q}$ spaces for suitable $p,q$ and $s,$ including the special case $p=2,q=1$ and $s=0.$ Finally, we prove some results of scattering and asymptotic stability in the framework of modulation spaces.
Through Borel summation methods, we analyze two different variations of the Navier-Stokes equation --the Boussinesq equation and the magnetic Benard equation. This method has previously been applied to the Navier-Stokes equation. We prove that an equivalent system of integral equations in each case has a unique solution, which is exponentially bounded for p in R^{+}, p being the Laplace dual variable of 1/t. This implies the local existence of a classical solution in a complex t-region that includes a real positive time (t)-axis segment. In this formalism, global existence of PDE solutions bec…
In this article we consider the stability and damping problem for the 2D Boussinesq equations with partial dissipation near a two parameter family of stationary solutions which includes Couette flow and hydrostatic balance. In the first part we show that for the linearized problem in an infinite periodic channel the evolution is asymptotically stable if any diffusion coefficient is non-zero. In particular, this imposes weaker conditions than for example vertical diffusion. Furthermore, we study the interaction of shear flow, hydrostatic balance and partial dissipation. In a second part we adap…
In this paper, we study the viscous Boussinesq equation in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$, which describes the propagation of small amplitude and long waves on the surface of water with viscous effects. Concerning the linearized Cauchy problem, some qualitative properties of solutions including $L^m-L^q$ estimates with $1\leqslant m\leqslant q\leqslant \infty$, inviscid limits and asymptotic profiles of solution with respect to the small viscosity are investigated by means of the Fourier analysis and the WKB method. For another, by applying some fractional order interpolations in the harmonic …
In this paper, we consider the Boussinesq equations with magnetohydrodynamics convection in the domain $\mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R}$ and establishes the nonlinear stability of the Couette flow $(\mathbf{u}_{sh} = (y,0), \mathbf{b}_{sh} = (1,0), p_{sh} = 0, θ_{sh} = 0$). The novelty in this paper is that we design a new Fourier multiplier operator by using the properties of the enhanced dissipation to overcome the difficult term $\partial_{xy}(-Δ)^{-1}j$ in the linearized and nonlinear system. Then, we prove the asymptotic stability for the linearized system. Finally, we establish the nonlinea…
