This study deals with higher-ordered asymptotic equations for the water-waves problem. We considered the higher-order/extended Boussinesq equations over a flat bottom topography in the well-known long wave regime. Providing an existence and uniqueness of solution on a relevant time scale of order $1/\sqrt{\eps}$ and showing that the solution's behavior is close to the solution of the water waves equations with a better precision corresponding to initial data, the asymptotic model is well-posed in the sense of Hadamard. Then we compared several water waves solitary solutions with respect to the numerical solution of our model. At last, we solve explicitly this model and validate the results numerically.
The primitive equations of large-scale oceanic dynamics form a fundamental model in geophysical flows. It is well-known that the primitive equations can be formally derived by the hydrostatic approximation. On the other hand, the mathematically rigorous derivation of the primitive equations without coupling with the temperature is also known. In this paper, we generalize the above result from the mathematical point of view. More precisely, we prove that the scaled Boussinesq equations with rotation converge to the full primitive equations in a strong sense, globally in time, with the convergen…
This paper is a continuation of a previous work by two of the Authors on long time existence for Boussinesq systems modeling the propagation of long, weakly nonlinear water waves. We provide proofs on examples not considered previously in particular we prove a long time well-posedness result for a delicate "strongly dispersive" Boussinesq system.
We consider the Cauchy problem for an evolution equation modeling bidirectional surface waves in a convecting fluid. Under small condition on the initial value, the existence and asymptotic behavior of global solutions in some time weighted spaces are established by the contraction mapping principle.
We prove a long time existence result for the solutions of a two-dimensional Boussinesq system modeling the propagation of long, weakly nonlinear water waves. This system is exceptional in the sense that it is the only linearly well-posed system in the (abcd) family of Boussinesq systems whose eigenvalues of the linearized system have nontrivial zeroes. This new difficulty is solved by the use of "good unknowns " and of normal form techniques.
The Boussinesq equations are known since the end of the XIXst century. However, the proliferation of various \textsc{Boussinesq}-type systems started only in the second half of the XXst century. Today they come under various flavours depending on the goals of the modeller. At the beginning of the XXIst century an effort to classify such systems, at least for even bottoms, was undertaken and developed according to both different physical regimes and mathematical properties, with special emphasis, in this last sense, on the existence of symmetry groups and their connection to conserved quantitie…
We investigate large time existence of solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Boussinesq equations with spatially almost periodic large data when the density stratification is sufficiently large. In 1996, Kimura and Herring \cite{KH} examined numerical simulations to show a stabilizing effect due to the stratification. They observed scattered two-dimensional pancake-shaped vortex patches lying almost in the horizontal plane. Our result is a mathematical justification of the presence of such two-dimensional pancakes. To show the existence of solutions for large times, we use $\ell^1$-norm of amplitudes…
Considered herein are a number of variants of the Boussinesq type systems modeling surface water waves. Such equations were derived by different authors to describe the two-way propagation of long gravity waves. A question of existence of special solutions, the so called solitary waves, is of a particular interest. There are a number of studies relying on a variational approach and a concentration-compactness argument. These proofs are technically very demanding and may vary significantly from one system to another. Our approach is based on the implicit function theorem, which makes the treatm…
In this work we prove that the solution of the Serre-Green-Naghdi equation cannot be globally defined when the interface reaches the impervious bottom tangentially. As a consequence, our result complements the paper \emph{Camassa, R., Falqui, G., Ortenzi, G., Pedroni, M., \& Thomson, C. Hydrodynamic models and confinement effects by horizontal boundaries. Journal of Nonlinear Science, 29(4), 1445-1498, 2019.} Furthermore, we also prove that the solution to the $abcd-$Boussinesq system can change sign in finite time. Finally, we provide with a proof of a scenario of finite time singularity for …
In this paper we address the Cauchy problem for two systems modeling the propagation of long gravity waves in a layer of homogeneous, incompressible and inviscid fluid delimited above by a free surface, and below by a non-necessarily flat rigid bottom. Concerning the Green-Naghdi system, we improve the result of Alvarez-Samaniego and Lannes (Invent. Math., 2008) in the sense that much less regular data are allowed, and no loss of derivatives is involved. Concerning the Boussinesq-Peregrine system, we improve the lower bound on the time of existence provided by M{é}sognon-Gireau (Adv. Different…
The Boussinesq $abcd$ system arises in the modeling of long wave small amplitude water waves in a channel, where the four parameters $(a,b,c,d)$ satisfy one constraint. In this paper we focus on the solitary wave solutions to such a system. In particular we work in two parameter regimes where the system does not admit a Hamiltonian structure (corresponding to $b \ne d$). We prove via analytic global bifurcation techniques the existence of solitary waves in such parameter regimes. Some qualitative properties of the solutions are also derived, from which sharp results can be obtained for the glo…
Consideration is given to the influence of an underwater landslide on waves at the surface of a shallow body of fluid. The equations of motion which govern the evolution of the barycenter of the landslide mass include various dissipative effects due to bottom friction, internal energy dissipation, and viscous drag. The surface waves are studied in the Boussinesq scaling, with time-dependent bathymetry. A numerical model for the Boussinesq equations is introduced which is able to handle time-dependent bottom topography, and the equations of motion for the landslide and surface waves are solved …
The 2d Boussinesq equations model large scale atmospheric and oceanic flows. Whether its solutions develop a singularity in finite-time remains a classical open problem in mathematical fluid dynamics. In this work, blowup from smooth nontrivial initial velocities in stagnation-point form solutions of this system is established. On an infinite strip $Ω=\{(x,y)\in[0,1]\times\mathbb{R}^+\}$, we consider velocities of the form $u=(f(t,x),-yf_x(t,x))$, with scalar temperature\, $θ=yρ(t,x)$. Assuming $f_x(0,x)$ attains its global maximum only at points $x_i^*$ located on the boundary of $[0,1]$, gen…
The global regularity problem for the Boussinesq system is a well known open problem in mathematical fluid dynamics. As a follow up to our work \cite{EJSI}, we give examples of finite-energy and Lipschitz continuous velocity field and density $(u_0,ρ_0)$ which are $C^\infty$-smooth away from the origin and belong to a natural local well-posedness class for the Boussinesq equation whose corresponding local solution becomes singular in finite time. That is, while the sup norm of the gradient of the velocity field and the density remain finite on the time interval $t\in [0,1)$, both quantities be…
The nonlinear fractional Boussinesq equations are known as the fractional differential equation class that has an important place in mathematical physics. In this study, a method called (G'G^2)-extension method which works well and reveals exact solutions is used to examine nonlinear Boussinesq equations with conformable time-fractional derivatives. This method is a very useful approach and extremely useful compared to other analytical methods. With the proposed method, there are three unique types of solutions such as hyperbolic, trigonometric and rational solutions. This approach can similar…
The Boussinesq system for buoyancy driven fluids couples the momentum equation forced by the buoyancy with the convection-diffusion equation for the temperature. One fundamental issue on the Boussinesq system is the stability problem on perturbations near the hydrostatic balance. This problem can be extremely difficult when the system lacks full dissipation. This paper solves the stability problem for a two-dimensional Boussinesq system with only vertical dissipation and horizontal thermal diffusion. We establish the stability for the nonlinear system and derive precise large-time behavior for…
This paper is devoted to the study of the long wave approximation for water waves under the influence of the gravity and a Coriolis forcing. We start by deriving a generalization of the Boussinesq equations in 1D (in space) and we rigorously justify them as an asymptotic model of the water waves equations. These new Boussinesq equations are not the classical Boussinesq equations. A new term due to the vorticity and the Coriolis forcing appears that can not be neglected. Then, we study the Boussinesq regime and we derive and fully justify different asymptotic models when the bottom is flat : a …
In this paper, we rigorously derive the governed equations describing the motion of stable stratified fluid, from the mathematical point of view. Specially, we prove that the scaled Boussinesq equations strongly converge to the viscous primitive equations with density stratification as the aspect ration parameter goes to zero, and the rate of convergence is of the same order as the aspect ratio parameter. Moreover, in order to obtain this convergence result, we also establish the global well-posedness of strong solutions to the viscous primitive equations with density stratification.
In this paper we prove a local well-posedness result for a class of quasi-linear systems of hyperbolic type involving Fourier multipliers. Among the physically relevant systems in this class is a family of Whitham-Boussinesq systems arising in the modeling free-surface water waves. Our result allows to prove the rigorous justification of these systems as approximations to the general water waves system on a relevant time scale, independent of the shallowness parameter.
This paper is devoted to the derivation and mathematical analysis of a wave-structure interaction problem which can be reduced to a transmission problem for a Boussinesq system. Initial boundary value problems and transmission problems in dimension d= 1 for $2\times2$ hyperbolic systems are well understood. However, for many applications, and especially for the description of surface water waves, dispersive perturbations of hyperbolic systems must be considered. We consider here a configuration where the motion of the waves is governed by a Boussinesq system (a dispersive perturbation of the h…
Coupled Boussinesq equations describe long weakly-nonlinear longitudinal strain waves in a bi-layer with a soft bonding between the layers (e.g. a soft adhesive). From the mathematical viewpoint, a particularly difficult case appears when the linear long-wave speeds in the layers are significantly different (high-contrast case). The traditional derivation of the uni-directional models leads to four uncoupled Ostrovsky equations, for the right- and left-propagating waves in each layer. However, the models impose a ``zero-mass constraint'' i.e. the initial conditions should necessarily have zero…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of weakly transverse water-waves under a weak Coriolis forcing in the long wave regime. We derive the Boussinesq-Coriolis equations in this setting and we provide a rigorous justification of this model. Then, from these equations, we derive two other asymptotic models. When the Coriolis forcing is weak, we fully justify the rotation-modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation (also called Grimshaw-Melville equation). When the Coriolis forcing is very weak, we rigorously justify the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. This work provides the first mathem…
Lymphocyte selection is a fundamental operation of adaptive immunity. In order to produce B-lymphocytes with a desired antigenic profile, a process of mutation-selection occurs in the germinal center, which is part of the lymph nodes. We introduce in this article a simplified mathematical model of this process, taking into account the main mechanisms of division, mutation and selection. This model is written as a non-linear, non-local, inhomogeneous second order partial differential equation, for which we develop a mathematical analysis in the case of piecewise-constant coefficients. We assess…
This paper presents an age structured problem modelling mosquito blood-feeding plasticity in a natural environment. We first investigate the analytical asymptotic solution through studying the spectrum of an operator $\mathbb{A}$ which is the infinitesimal generator of a $C_0$-semigroup. Indeed, the study of the spectrum of $\mathbb{A}$ {\it per se} is interesting. Additionally, we get the existence and nonexistence of nonnegative steady solutions under some conditions.
We perform mathematical anaysis of the biofilm development process. A model describing biomass growth is proposed: It arises from coupling three parabolic nonlinear equations: a biomass equation with degenerate and singular diffusion, a nutrient tranport equation with a biomass-density dependent diffusion, and an equation of the Navier-Stokes type, describing the fluid flow in which the biofilm develops. This flow is subject to a biomass--density dependent obstacle. The model is treated as a system of three inclusions, or variational inequalities; the third one causes major difficulties for th…
We study an inverse problem for Light Sheet Fluorescence Microscopy (LSFM), where the density of fluorescent molecules needs to be reconstructed. Our first step is to present a mathematical model to describe the measurements obtained by an optic camera during an LSFM experiment. Two meaningful stages are considered: excitation and fluorescence. We propose a paraxial model to describe the excitation process which is directly related with the Fermi pencil-beam equation. For the fluorescence stage, we use the transport equation to describe the transport of photons towards the detection camera. Fo…
The simulation of long, nonlinear dispersive waves in bounded domains usually requires the use of slip-wall boundary conditions. Boussinesq systems appearing in the literature are generally not well-posed when such boundary conditions are imposed, or if they are well-posed it is very cumbersome to implement the boundary conditions in numerical approximations. In the present paper a new Boussinesq system is proposed for the study of long waves of small amplitude in a basin when slip-wall boundary conditions are required. The new system is derived using asymptotic techniques under the assumption…
The aim of this paper is to provide a mathematical model for spatial distribution of membrane electrical potential changes by fluorescence diffuse optical tomography. We derive the resolving power of the imaging method in the presence of measurement noise. The proposed mathematical model can be used for cell membrane tracking with the resolution of the optical microscope.
We develop two mathematical lumped parameter models for blood pressure distribution in the Fontan blood flow circulation: an ODE based spatially homogeneous model and a PDE based spatially inhomogeneous model. We present numerical simulations of the cardiac pressure-volume cycle and study the effect of pulmonary resistance on cardiac output. We analyze solutions of two initial-boundary value problems for a non-linear parabolic partial differential equation (PDE models) with switching in the time dynamic boundary conditions which model blood pressure distribution in the cardiovascular system wi…
Inorganic scintillating crystals can be modelled as continua with microstructure. For rigid and isothermal crystals the evolution of charge carriers becomes in this way described by a reaction-diffusion-drift equation coupled with the Poisson equation of electrostatic. Here we give a survey of the available existence and asymptotic decays results for the resulting boundary value problem, the latter being a direct estimate of the scintillation decay time. We also show how to recover various approximated models which encompass also the two most used phenomenological models for scintillators, nam…
