We study the flow of a micropolar fluid in a thin domain with microstructure, i.e. a thin domain with thickness $\varepsilon$ which is perforated by periodically distributed solid cylinders of size $a_\varepsilon$. A main feature of this study is the dependence of the characteristic length of the micropolar fluid on the small parameters describing the geometry of the thin porous medium under consideration. Depending on the ratio of $a_\varepsilon$ with respect to $\varepsilon$, we derive three different generalized Darcy equations where the interaction between the velocity and the microrotation fields is preserved.
Motivated by lubrication problems, we consider a micropolar uid ow in a 2D domain with a rough and free boundary. We assume that the thickness and the roughness are both of order 0 < " << 1. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a solution of this problem for any value of " and we establish some a priori estimates. Then we use the two-scale convergence technique to derive the limit problem when " tends to zero. Moreover we show that the limit velocity and micro-rotation elds are uniquely determined via auxiliary well-posed problems and the limit pressure is given as the unique solution of a…
We describe the asymptotic behaviour of a filtration problem from a contaminated porous medium to a non-contaminated porous medium through thin vertical fissures of fixed height h>0, of random thinness of order ε and which are $ε$-periodically distributed. We compute the limit velocity of the flow and the limit flux of pollutant at the interfaces between the two porous media and the intermediate one.
By using dimension reduction and homogenization techniques, we study the steady flow of an incompresible viscoplastic Bingham fluid in a thin porous medium. A main feature of our study is the dependence of the yield stress of the Bingham fluid on the small parameters describing the geometry of the thin porous medium under consideration. Three different problems are obtained in the limit when the small parameter $\varepsilon$ tends to zero, following the ratio between the height $\varepsilon$ of the porous medium and the relative dimension $a_\varepsilon$ of its periodically distributed pores. …
The singular limit of the thin film Muskat problem is performed when the density (and possibly the viscosity) of the lighter fluid vanishes and the porous medium equation is identified as the limit problem. In particular, the height of the denser fluid is shown to converge towards the solution to the porous medium equation and an explicit rate for this convergence is provided in space dimension d $\le$ 4. Moreover, the limit of the height of the lighter fluid is determined in a certain regime and is given by the corresponding initial condition.
We consider the Stokes system in a thin porous medium $Ω_\varepsilon$ of thickness $\varepsilon$ which is perforated by periodically distributed solid cylinders of size $\varepsilon$. On the boundary of the cylinders we prescribe non-homogeneous slip boundary conditions depending on a parameter $γ$. The aim is to give the asymptotic behavior of the velocity and the pressure of the fluid as $\varepsilon$ goes to zero. Using an adaptation of the unfolding method, we give, following the values of $γ$, different limit systems.
In this paper we discuss a model describing global behavior of the two phase incompressible flow in fractured porous media. The fractured media is regarded as a porous medium consisting of two superimposed continua, a connected fracture system, which is assumed to be thin of order $\varepsilonδ$, and an $\varepsilon$-periodic system of disjoint matrix blocks. We derive global behavior of the fractured media by passing to the limit as $\varepsilon\rightarrow 0$ and then as the relative fracture thickness $δ\rightarrow 0$, taking into account that the permeability of the blocks is proportional t…
We study the process of two-phase flow in thin porous media domains of Brinkman-type. This is generally described by a model of coupled, mixed-type differential equations of fluids' saturation and pressure. To reduce the model complexity, different approaches that utilize the thin geometry of the domain have been suggested. We focus on a reduced model that is formulated as a single nonlocal evolution equation of saturation. It is derived by applying standard asymptotic analysis to the dimensionless coupled model, however, a rigid mathematical derivation is still lacking. In this paper, we prov…
In this paper we investigate the interaction of fluid flow with a thin porous elastic layer. We consider two fluid-filled bulk domains which are separated by a thin periodically perforated layer consisting of a fluid and an elastic solid part. Thickness and periodicity of the layer are of order $ε$, where $ε$ is small compared to the size of the bulk domains. The fluid flow is described by an instationary Stokes equation and the solid via linear elasticity. The main contribution of this paper is the rigorous homogenization of the porous structure in the layer and the reduction of the layer to …
In this paper, we study a nonlocal degenerate parabolic equation of order α + 2 for 0<α<2. The equation is a generalization of the one arising in the modeling of hydraulic fractures studied by Imbert and Mellet in 2011. Using the same approach, we prove the existence of solutions for this equation for 0<α<2 and for nonnegative initial data satisfying appropriate assumptions. The main difference is the compactness results due to different Sobolev embeddings. Furthermore, for α > 1, we construct a nonnegative solution for nonnegative initial data under weaker assumptions.
We prove global existence of nonnegative weak solutions to a degenerate parabolic system which models the interaction of two thin fluid films in a porous medium. Furthermore, we show that these weak solutions converge at an exponential rate towards flat equilibria.
We prove global existence of nonnegative weak solutions for a strongly coupled, fourth order degenerate parabolic system governing the motion of two thin fluid layers in a porous medium when capillarity is the sole driving mechanism.
This investigation develops basic methods for the multi-scale analysis for problems in thin porous layers. More precisely, we provide tools for the homogenization in case of "tangentially" periodic structures and dimensional reduction letting the layer thickness tend to zero proportional to the scale parameter $ε$. A crucial point is the identification of scale limits of functions $v_ε$ in subsets of function spaces characterized by uniform a priori estimates with respect to $ε$, arising for solutions of differential equations in heterogeneous media with thin layers, e.g., of a Navier-Stokes s…
This paper deals with a nonlinear degenerate parabolic equation of order $α$ between 2 and 4 which is a kind of fractional version of the Thin Film Equation. Actually, this one corresponds to the limit value $α=4$ while the Porous Medium Equation is the limit $α=2$. We prove existence of a nonnegative weak solution for a general class of initial data, and establish its main properties. We also construct the special solutions in self-similar form which turn out to be explicit and compactly supported. As in the porous medium case, they are supposed to give the long time behaviour or the wide cla…
Various degenerate diffusion equations exhibit a waiting time phenomenon: Dependening on the "flatness" of the compactly supported initial datum at the boundary of the support, the support of the solution may not expand for a certain amount of time. We show that this phenomenon is captured by particular Lagrangian discretizations of the porous medium and the thin-film equations, and we obtain suffcient criteria for the occurrence of waiting times that are consistent with the known ones for the original PDEs. Our proof is based on estimates on the fluid velocity in Lagrangian coordinates. Combi…
We deal with the large time behavior for a porous medium equation posed in nonhomogeneous media with singular critical density $$ |x|^{-2}\partial_tu(x,t)=Δu^m(x,t), \quad (x,t)\in \real^N\times(0,\infty), \ m\geq1, $$ posed in dimensions $N=1$ and $N=2$, which are also interesting in applied models according to works by Kamin and Rosenau. We deal with the Cauchy problem with bounded and continuous initial data $u_0$. We show that in dimension $N=2$, the asymptotic profiles are self-similar solutions that vary depending on whether $u_0(0)=0$ or $u_0(0)=K\in(0,\infty)$. In dimension $N=1$, thin…
The thin-film and quantum drift diffusion equations belong to a fourth-order family of evolution equations proposed in ref. 16 to be analogous to the (second-order) porous medium family. They are $2$-Wasserstein gradient ($W_2$) flows of the generalized Fisher information $I(u)$ just as the porous medium family was shown to be the $W_2$ gradient flow of the generalized entropy $E(u)$ by Otto. The identity $I(u) = |\nabla_{W_2} E(u)|^2/2$ (formally) becomes $\Hess_{W_2} I(u_*) =\Hess_{W_2}^2 E(u_*)$ when linearizing the equation around its self-similar solution $u_*$. We couple this relation wi…
This paper studies the dynamics of an incompressible fluid driven by gravity and capillarity forces in a porous medium. The main interest is the stabilization of the fluid in Rayleigh-Taylor unstable situations where the fluid lays on top of a dry region. An important feature considered here is that the layer of fluid is under an impervious wall. This physical situation have been widely study by mean of thin film approximations in the case of small characteristic high of the fluid considering its strong interaction with the fixed boundary. Here, instead of considering any simplification leadin…
Consider the thin-film equation $h_t + \left(h h_{yyy}\right)_y = 0$ with a zero contact angle at the free boundary, that is, at the triple junction where liquid, gas, and solid meet. Previous results on stability and well-posedness of this equation have focused on perturbations of equilibrium-stationary or self-similar profiles, the latter eventually wetting the whole surface. These solutions have their counterparts for the second-order porous-medium equation $h_t - (h^m)_{yy} = 0$, where $m > 1$ is a free parameter. Both porous-medium and thin-film equation degenerate as $h \searrow 0$, but …
We consider the thin-film equation $\partial_t h + \nabla \cdot \left(h^2 \nabla Δh\right) = 0$ in physical space dimensions (i.e., one dimension in time $t$ and two lateral dimensions with $h$ denoting the height of the film in the third spatial dimension), which corresponds to the lubrication approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations of a three-dimensional viscous thin fluid film with Navier-slip at the substrate. This equation can have a free boundary (the contact line), moving with finite speed, at which we assume a zero contact angle condition (complete-wetting regime). Previous result…
