We study the process of two-phase flow in thin porous media domains of Brinkman-type. This is generally described by a model of coupled, mixed-type differential equations of fluids' saturation and pressure. To reduce the model complexity, different approaches that utilize the thin geometry of the domain have been suggested.
We focus on a reduced model that is formulated as a single nonlocal evolution equation of saturation. It is derived by applying standard asymptotic analysis to the dimensionless coupled model, however, a rigid mathematical derivation is still lacking. In this paper, we prove that the reduced model is the analytical limit of the coupled two-phase flow model as the geometrical parameter of domain's width--length ratio tends to zero. Precisely, we prove the convergence of weak solutions for the coupled model to a weak solution for the reduced model as the geometrical parameter approaches zero.
For a fully-coupled Darcy-Stokes system describing the exchange of fluid and stress balance across the interface between a saturated porous medium and an open very narrow channel, the limiting problem is characterized as the width of the channel converges to zero. It is proven that the limit problem is a fully-coupled system of Darcy flow in the porous medium with Brinkman flow in tangential coordinates of the lower dimensional interface.
We consider three-dimensional (3D) Boussinesq convection system of an incompressible fluid in a closed sample of a porous medium. Specifically, we introduce and analyze a 3D Brinkman-Forchheimer-Bénard convection problem describing the behavior of an incompressible fluid in a porous medium between two plates heated from the bottom and cooled from the top. We show the existence and uniqueness of global in-time solutions, and the existence of absorbing balls in $L^2$ and $H^1$. Eventually, we comment on the applicability of a data assimilation algorithm to our system.
We study a nonlocal evolution equation that involves a pseudo-parabolic third-order term. The equation models almost uni-directional two-phase flow in Brinkman regimes. We prove the existence of weak solutions for this equation. We also give a series of numerical examples that demonstrate the ability of the equation to support overshooting and explore the behavior of solutions in various limit regimes.
Slightly compressible Brinkman-Forchheimer equations in a bounded 3D domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions are considered. These equations model fluids motion in porous media. The dissipativity of these equations in higher order energy spaces is obtained and regularity and smoothing properties of the solutions are studied. In addition, the existence of a global and an exponential attractors for these equations in a natural phase space is verified.
The nonlinear Brinkman-Forchheimer-extended Darcy equation is used to model some porous medium flow in chemical reactors of packed bed type. The results concerning the existence and uniqueness of a weak solution are presented for nonlinear convective flows in medium with nonconstant porosity and for small data. Furthermore, the finite element approximations to the flow profiles in the fixed bed reactor are presented for several Reynolds numbers at the non-Darcy's range.
In this paper we study optimal control problem for non local Cahn-Hilliard-Brinkman system which models phase separation of binary fluids in porous media. We consider the system in two dimensional bounded domain with regular potential. We extend recently proved existence of weak solution results for such a system and prove the existence of strong solution under certain assumptions on the forcing term and initial datum. Further using our regularity results, we study the tracking type optimal control problem. We prove the existence of an optimal control and establish the first order optimality c…
We consider a diffuse interface model for phase separation of an isothermal incompressible binary fluid in a Brinkman porous medium. The coupled system consists of a convective Cahn-Hilliard equation for the phase field $ϕ$, i.e., the difference of the (relative) concentrations of the two phases, coupled with a modified Darcy equation proposed by H.C. Brinkman in 1947 for the fluid velocity $\mathbf{u}$. This equation incorporates a diffuse interface surface force proportional to $ϕ\nabla μ$, where $μ$ is the so-called chemical potential. We analyze the well-posedness of the resulting Cahn-Hil…
In this paper we show the global well-posedness of solutions to a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) model in porous media. Compared to the classical MHD equations, our system involves a nonlinear damping term in the momentum equations due to the "Brinkman-Forcheimer-extended-Darcy" law of flow in porous media.
We show the solvability of a multidimensional Muskat type initial boundary value problem. The proposed mathematical model describing the transport phenomena of non-homogeneous flow in porous media, relies on a generalized formulation of the Brinkman equation.
In this article, we study an inverse problem for the following convective Brinkman-Forchheimer (CBF) equations: \begin{align*} \boldsymbol{u}_t-μΔ\boldsymbol{u}+(\boldsymbol{u}\cdot\nabla)\boldsymbol{u}+α\boldsymbol{u}+β|\boldsymbol{u}|^{r-1}\boldsymbol{u}+\nabla p=\boldsymbol{F}:=\boldsymbol{f} g, \ \ \ \nabla\cdot\boldsymbol{u}=0, \end{align*} in bounded domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ ($d=2,3$) with smooth boundary, where $α,β,μ>0$ and $r\in[1,\infty)$. The CBF equations describe the motion of incompressible fluid flows in a saturated porous medium. The inverse problem under our consideratio…
In this paper, we study Brinkman's equations with microscale properties that are highly heterogeneous in space and time. The time variations are controlled by a stochastic particle dynamics described by an SDE. The particle dynamics can be thought as particle deposition that often occurs in filter problems. Our main results include the derivation of macroscale equations and showing that the macroscale equations are deterministic. The latter is important for our (also many other) applications as it greatly simplifies the macroscale equations. We use the asymptotic properties of the SDE and the …
We study in this paper compression effects in heterogeneous media with maximal packing constraint. Starting from compressible Brinkman equations, where maximal packing is encoded in a singular pressure and a singular bulk viscosity, we show that the global weak solutions converge (up to a subsequence) to global weak solutions of the two-phase compressible/incompressible Brinkman equations with respect to a parameter $\varepsilon$ which measures effects close to the maximal packing value. Depending on the importance of the bulk viscosity with respect to the pressure in the dense regimes, memory…
In this work, we carry out the asymptotic analysis of the two dimensional convective Brinkman-Forchheimer (CBF) equations, which characterize the motion of incompressible fluid flows in a saturated porous medium. We establish the existence of a global attractor in both bounded (using compact embedding) and Poincaré domains (using asymptotic compactness property). In Poincaré domains, for $r=1,2$ and $3$, the estimates for Hausdorff as well as fractal dimensions of the global attractors are also obtained. We then show an upper semicontinuity of global attractors for the 2D CBF equations. We con…
The phase separation of an isothermal incompressible binary fluid in a porous medium can be described by the so-called Brinkman equation coupled with a convective Cahn-Hilliard (CH) equation. The former governs the average fluid velocity $\mathbf{u}$, while the latter rules evolution of $φ$, the difference of the (relative) concentrations of the two phases. The two equations are known as the Cahn-Hilliard-Brinkman (CHB) system. In particular, the Brinkman equation is a Stokes-like equation with a forcing term (Korteweg force) which is proportional to $μ\nablaφ$, where $μ$ is the chemical poten…
We present a two-species model with applications in tumour modelling. The main novelty is the coupling of both species through the so-called Brinkman law which is typically used in the context of visco-elastic media, where the velocity field is linked to the total population pressure via an elliptic equation. The same model for only one species has been studied by Perthame and Vauchelet in the past. The first part of this paper is dedicated to establishing existence of solutions to the problem, while the second part deals with the incompressible limit as the stiffness of the pressure law tends…
In this paper, periodic homogenization of a steady fluid flow in fissured porous solids with imperfect interfacial contact is performed via two-scale asymptotic method.
In this work we consider weak solutions of the incompressible 2-D porous media equation. By using the approach of De Lellis-Székelyhidi we prove non-uniqueness for solutions in $L^\infty$ in space and time.
We construct examples of solutions to the incompressible porous media (IPM) equation that must exhibit infinite in time growth of derivatives provided they remain smooth. As an application, this allows us to obtain nonlinear instability for a class of stratified steady states of IPM.
Using measure-capacity inequalities we study new functional inequalities, namely L^q-Poincaré inequalities and L^q-logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. As a consequence, we establish the asymptotic behavior of the solutions to the so-called weighted porous media equation for m?1, in terms of L^2-norms and entropies.
Compaction in reactive porous media is modelled as a reaction-diffusion process with a moving boundary. Asymptotic analysis is used to find solutions for the coupled nonlinear compaction equations, and a traveling wave solution is obtained above the reaction zone.
We describe the asymptotic behaviour of a filtration problem from a contaminated porous medium to a non-contaminated porous medium through thin vertical fissures of fixed height h>0, of random thinness of order ε and which are $ε$-periodically distributed. We compute the limit velocity of the flow and the limit flux of pollutant at the interfaces between the two porous media and the intermediate one.
In this paper we study the existence and partial regularity of weak solutions to an elliptic-parabolic system that models the single-phase miscible displacement of one incompressible fluid by another in a porous media. The system is singular and involves quadratic nonlinearity. A partial regularity result is obtained via the Fefferman-Stein inequality.
In this paper we consider the incompressible porous media equation in the Sobolev spaces $H^s(\R^2), s > 2$. We prove that for $T > 0$ the time $T$ solution map $ρ_0 \mapsto ρ(T)$ is nowhere locally uniformly continuous. On the other hand we show that the particle trajectories are analytic curves in $\R^2$.
We consider a PDE system with degenerate hysteresis describing unsaturated flow in 3D porous media. Assuming that a time periodic forcing is prescribed on the boundary, we prove that a time periodic response exists as long as the amplitude of the forcing terms is small enough to keep the solution within the convexity domain of the hysteresis operator.
The purpose of this paper is the mathematical analysis of the weak solution of the mixed Dirichlet-Robin boundary value problem for the nonlinear Darcy-Forchheimer- Brinkman system in a bounded, two-dimensional Lipschitz domain, and the application of the corresponding results to the study of the lid-driven flow problem of an incompressible viscous fluid located in a square cavity filled with a porous medium. First we obtain a well-posedness result for the linear Brinkman system with Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions, employing a variational approach for the corresponding boundary integral…
The Muskat problem involves filtration of two incompressible fluids throughout a porous medium. In this paper we shall discuss in 3-D the relevance of the Rayleigh-Taylor condition, and the topology of the initial interface, in order to prove its local existence in Sobolev spaces.
We establish uniqueness of the solution of the unsteady state dam problem in the heterogeneous and rectangular case assuming the dam wet at the bottom and dry near to the top.
We show that advection-diffusion equations with porous media type diffusion and integrable initial data are globally solvable under very mild conditions. Some generalizations and related results are also given.
We study a generalization of the porous medium equation involving nonlocal terms. More precisely, explicit self-similar solutions with compact support generalizing the Barenblatt solutions are constructed. We also present a formal argument to get the $L^p$ decay of weak solutions of the corresponding Cauchy problem.
The Nernst-Planck-Darcy system models ionic electrodiffusion in porous media. We consider the system for two ionic species with opposite valences. We prove that the initial value problem for the Nernst-Planck-Darcy system in periodic domains in two or three dimensions has global weak solutions in $W^{1, p}$ ($p \geq 2$). We obtain furthermore global existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions for arbitrary large data.
From the steady Stokes and Navier-Stokes models, a penalization method has been considered by several authors for approximating those fluid equations around obstacles. In this work, we present a justification for using fictitious domains to study obstacles immersed in incompressible viscous fluids through a simplified version of Brinkman's law for porous media. If the scalar function $ψ$ is considered as the inverse of permeability, it is possible to study the singularities of $ψ$ as approximations of obstacles (when $ψ$ tends to $\infty$) or of the domain corresponding to the fluid (when $ψ= …
We prove global well-posedness in the strong sense for stochastic generalized porous media equations driven by square integrable martingales with stationary independent increments.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of non-negative entropy solutions of the obstacle problem for stochastic porous media equations. The core of the method is to combine the entropy formulation with the penalization method.
The long time behaviour of solutions to generalised stochastic porous media equations on bounded domains with Dirichlet boundary data is studied. We focus on a degenerate form of nonlinearity arising in self-organised criticality. Based on the so-called lower-bound method, the existence and uniqueness of an invariant measure is proved.
In this paper, we study the discrete Morse flow for the Ricci flow on football, which is the 2-sphere with removed north and south poles and with the metric $g_0$ of constant scalar curvature, and and for Porous media equation on a bounded regular domain in the plane. We show that with a suitable assumption about $g(0)$ we have a weak approximated discrete Morse flow for the approximated Ricci flow and Porous media equation on any time intervals.
We study the displacement of three immiscible Stokes fluids with constant viscosities in a porous medium. The middle-layer fluid is contained in a bounded region. We give an analysis of the linear stability of this process. This stability problem has no solution (in general).
The paper deals with homogenization of a model problem describing an immiscible compressible two-phase flow in random statistically homogeneous porous media. We derive the effective (macroscopic) problem and prove the convergence of solutions. Our approach relies on stochastic two-scale convergence techniques, the realization-wise notion of stochastic two-scale convergence being used. Also, we exploit various a priori estimates as well as monotonicity and compactness arguments.
We prove finite speed of propagation for stochastic porous media equations perturbed by linear multiplicative space-time rough signals. Explicit and optimal estimates for the speed of propagation are given. The result applies to any continuous driving signal, thus including fractional Brownian motion for all Hurst parameters. The explicit estimates are then used to prove that the corresponding random attractor has infinite fractal dimension.
The injection and in-situ generation of foam in porous media successfully control gas mobility and improve the fluids' sweep efficiency inside porous media. Mathematical models describing this problem use two phases, foamed gas and fluid, and usually have a term for foam generation and destruction. Moreover, the non-Newtonian foam behavior is frequently modeled using the Hirasaki and Lawson's formula for foamed gas viscosity. In this paper, we detail how the traveling wave analysis can be used to estimate the propagation profiles and velocity for a range of non-Newtonian foam models in porous …
