In this paper we study stationary incompressible Newtonian fluid flow in a thin porous media. The media under consideration is a bounded perforated $3D$ domain confined between two parallel plates. The description of the domain includes two small parameters: $\varepsilon$ representing the distance between pates and $a_\varepsilon$ connected to the microstructure of the domain such that $a_\varepsilon\ll \varepsilon$. We consider the classical setting of perforated media, i.e. $a_\varepsilon$-periodically distributed solid (not connected) obstacles of size $a_\varepsilon$. The goal of this paper is to introduce a version of the unfolding method, depending on both parameters $\varepsilon$ and $a_\varepsilon$, and then to derive the corresponding $2D$ Darcy's law.
For a fully-coupled Darcy-Stokes system describing the exchange of fluid and stress balance across the interface between a saturated porous medium and an open very narrow channel, the limiting problem is characterized as the width of the channel converges to zero. It is proven that the limit problem is a fully-coupled system of Darcy flow in the porous medium with Brinkman flow in tangential coordinates of the lower dimensional interface.
We prove that the quadratic approximation of the capillarity-driven free-boundary Darcy flow is well posed in $ \dot{H}^{3/2} $, and globally well-posed if the initial datum is small in $ \dot{H}^{3/2} $.
We provide a rigorous mathematical study of an asymptotic model describing Darcy flow with free boundary in a low amplitude/large wavelength approximation. In particular, we prove several well-posedness results in critical spaces. Furthermore, we also study how the solution decays towards the flat equilibrium.
A linear system of differential equations describing a joint motion of a thermoelastic porous body with a sufficiently large Lame's constants (absolutelty rigid body) and a thermofluid, occupying porous space, is considered. The rigorous justification, under various conditions imposed on physical parameters, is fulfilled for homogenization procedures as the dimensionless size of the pores tends to zero, while the porous body is geometrically periodic. As the results we derive Darcy's system of filtration for thermofluid, depending on ratios between physical parameters. The proofs are based on …
In this paper we study the homogenization of the Dirichlet problem for the Stokes equations in a perforated domain with multiple microstructures. First, under the assumption that the interface between subdomains is a union of Lipschitz surfaces, we show that the effective velocity and pressure are governed by a Darcy law, where the permeability matrix is piecewise constant. The key step is to prove that the effective pressure is continuous across the interface, using Tartar's method of test functions. Secondly, we establish the sharp error estimates for the convergence of the velocity and pres…
The Nernst-Planck-Darcy system models ionic electrodiffusion in porous media. We consider the system for two ionic species with opposite valences. We prove that the initial value problem for the Nernst-Planck-Darcy system in periodic domains in two or three dimensions has global weak solutions in $W^{1, p}$ ($p \geq 2$). We obtain furthermore global existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions for arbitrary large data.
In porous media, there are three known regimes of fluid flows, namely, pre-Darcy, Darcy and post-Darcy. Because of their different natures, these are usually treated separately in literature. To study complex flows when all three regimes may be present in different portions of a same domain, we use a single equation of motion to unify them. Several scenarios and models are then considered for slightly compressible fluids. A nonlinear parabolic equation for the pressure is derived, which is degenerate when the pressure gradient is either small or large. We estimate the pressure and its gradient…
The nonlinear Brinkman-Forchheimer-extended Darcy equation is used to model some porous medium flow in chemical reactors of packed bed type. The results concerning the existence and uniqueness of a weak solution are presented for nonlinear convective flows in medium with nonconstant porosity and for small data. Furthermore, the finite element approximations to the flow profiles in the fixed bed reactor are presented for several Reynolds numbers at the non-Darcy's range.
In this manuscript we consider a porous medium equation with non-local diffusion effects given by a fractional heat operator $\partial_t + (-Δ)^s$ in two space dimensions. Global in time existence of weak solutions is shown by employing a time semi-discretization of the equations, an energy inequality, a higher order integral estimate, and a generalized version of the Div-Curl lemma.
We consider the homogenization of a Poisson problem or a Stokes system in a randomly punctured domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We assume that the holes are spherical and have random centres and radii. We impose that the average distance between the balls is of size $\eps$ and their average radius is $\varepsilon^α$, $α\in (1; 3)$. We prove that, as in the periodic case [G. Allaire, ``Homogenization of the Navier-Stokes equations in domains perforated with tiny holes. II''], the solutions converge to the solution of Darcy's law (or its scalar analogue in the case of Poisson). In the …
The asymptotic analysis of a Darcy-Stokes system modeling the fluid exchange between a narrow channel (Stokes) and a porous medium (Darcy) coupled through a $ C^{2} $ curved interface, is presented. The channel is a cylindrical domain between the interface ($ Γ$) and a parallel translation of it ($ Γ+ ε\, \boldsymbol{\widehat{e}}_{N} $). The introduction of a change variable to fix the domain's geometry and the introduction of two systems of coordinates: the Cartesian and a local one (consistent with the geometry of the surface), permit to find a Darcy-Brinkman lower dimensional coupled system…
This paper is concerned with Darcy's law for an incompressible viscous fluid flowing in a porous medium. We establish the sharp $O(\sqrt{\e})$ convergence rate in a periodically perforated and bounded domain in $R^d$ for $d\ge 2$, where $\e$ represents the size of solid obstacles. This is achieved by constructing two boundary correctors to control the boundary layers created by the incompressibility condition and the discrepancy of boundary values between the solution and the leading term in its asymptotic expansion. One of the correctors deals with the tangential boundary data, while the othe…
We provide rigorous asymptotic models for the free boundary Darcy and Forchheimer problem under the assumption of weak nonlinear interaction, in a regime in which the steepness parameter of the interface is considered to be very small. The models we derive capture the nonlinear interaction of the original free boundary Darcy and Forchheimer problem up to quadratic terms. Furthermore, we provide models that consider both the two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases, with and without bottom topography.
Fluid flows in coupled systems consisting of a free-flow region and the adjacent porous medium appear in a variety of environmental settings and industrial applications. In many applications, fluid flow is non-parallel to the fluid-porous interface that requires a generalisation of the Beavers-Joseph coupling condition typically used for the Stokes-Darcy problem. Generalised coupling conditions valid for arbitrary flow directions to the interface are recently derived using the theory of homogenisation and boundary layers. The aim of this work is the mathematical analysis of the Stokes-Darcy pr…
We introduce a Darcy-scale model to describe compressible multi-component flow in a fully saturated porous medium. In order to capture cross-diffusive effects between the different species correctly, we make use of the Maxwell--Stefan theory in a thermodynamically consistent way. For inviscid flow the model turns out to be a nonlinear system of hyperbolic balance laws. We show that the dissipative structure of the Maxwell-Stefan operator permits to guarantee the existence of global classical solutions for initial data close to equilibria. Furthermore it is proven by relative entropy techniques…
In this paper we show the global well-posedness of solutions to a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) model in porous media. Compared to the classical MHD equations, our system involves a nonlinear damping term in the momentum equations due to the "Brinkman-Forcheimer-extended-Darcy" law of flow in porous media.
We show that the widely used model governing the motion of two incompressible immiscible fluids in a possibly heterogeneous porous medium has a formal gradient flow structure. More precisely, the fluid composition is governed by the gradient flow of some non-smooth energy. Starting from this energy together with a dissipation potential, we recover the celebrated Darcy-Muskat law and the capillary pressure law governing the flow thanks to the principle of least action. Our interpretation does not require the introduction of any algebraic transformation like, e.g., the global pressure or the Kir…
We consider the flow of a viscous incompressible fluid through a porous medium. We allow the permeability of the medium to depend exponentially on the pressure and provide an analysis for this model. We study a splitting formulation where a convection diffusion problem is used to define the permeability, which is then used in a linear Darcy equation. We also study a discretization of this problem, and provide an error analysis for it.
We study a moving boundary problem modeling an injected fluid into another viscous fluid. The viscous fluid is withdrawn at infinity and governed by Darcy's law. We present solutions to the free boundary problem in terms of time-derivative of a generalized Newtonian potentials of the characteristic function of the bubble. This enables us to show that the bubble occupies the entire space as the time tends to infinity if and only if the internal generalized Newtonian potential of the initial bubble is a quadratic polynomial.
In this article we derive the fractional porous medium equation for any power of the fractional Laplacian as the hydrodynamic limit of a microscopic dynamics of random particles with long range interactions, but the jump rate highly depends on the occupancy near the sites where the interactions take place.
By using the unfolding operators for periodic homogenization, we give a general compactness result for a class of functions defined on bounded domains presenting perforations of two different size. Then we apply this result to the homogenization of the flow of a Bingham fluid in a porous medium with solid obstacles of different size. Next we give the interpretation of the limit problem in term of a non linear Darcy law.
