By introducing a new coordinate system, we prove that there are abundant new periodic orbits near relative equilibrium solutions of the N-body problem. We consider only Lagrange relative equilibrium of the three-body problem and Euler-Moulton relative equilibrium of the N-body problem, although we believe that there are similar results for general relative equilibrium solutions. All of these periodic orbits lie on a 2d-dimensional central manifold of the planar N-body problem. Besides d one parameter family of periodic orbits which are well known as Lyapunov's orbits or Weinstein's orbits, we further prove that periodic orbits are unexpectedly abundant: generically the relative measure of the closure of the set of periodic orbits near relative equilibrium solutions on the 2d-dimensional central manifold is close to 1. These abundant periodic orbits are named Conley-Zender's orbits, since to find them is based on an extended result of Conley and Zender on the local existence result for periodic orbits near an elliptic equilibrium point of a Hamiltonian. In particular, the results provide some evidences to support the well known claim of Poincaré on the conjecture of periodic orbits of the N-body problem.
We extend our previous analytic existence of a symmetric periodic simultaneous binary collision orbit in a regularized fully symmetric equal mass four-body problem to the analytic existence of a symmetric periodic simultaneous binary collision orbit in a regularized planar pairwise symmetric equal mass four-body problem. We then use a continuation method to numerically find symmetric periodic simultaneous binary collision orbits in a regularized planar pairwise symmetric 1, m, 1, m four-body problem for $m$ between 0 and 1. Numerical estimates of the the characteristic multipliers show that th…
We study the recurrence of inhomogeneous Markov chains in the plane, when the environment is horizontally stratified and the heterogeneity of quasi-periodic type.
We provide sufficient conditions for the existence of periodic solutions with small amplitude of the non--linear planar double pendulum perturbed by smooth or non--smooth functions.
I announce a solution of the conjecture about the measure of periodic points for planar billiard tables. The theorem says that if $\Om\subset\R^2$ is a compact domain with piecewise $C^3$ boundary, then the set of periodic orbits for the billiard in $\Om$ has measure zero. Here I outline a proof. A complete version will appear elsewhere.
We study the existence of periodic solutions in a class of planar Filippov systems obtained from non-autonomous periodic perturbations of reversible piecewise smooth differential systems. It is assumed that the unperturbed system presents a simple two-fold cycle, which is characterized by a closed trajectory connecting a visible two-fold singularity to itself. It is shown that under certain generic conditions the perturbed system has sliding and crossing periodic solutions. In order to get our results, Melnikov's ideas were applied together with tools from the geometric singular perturbation t…
We present a method for proving the existence of symmetric periodic, heteroclinic or homoclinic orbits in dynamical systems with the reversing symmetry. As an application we show that the Planar Restricted Circular Three Body Problem (PCR3BP) corresponding to the Sun-Jupiter-Oterma system possesses an infinite number of symmetric periodic orbits and homoclinic orbits to the Lyapunov orbits. Moreover, we show the existence of symbolic dynamics on six symbols for PCR3BP and the possibility of resonance transitions of the comet. This extends earlier results by Wilczak and Zgliczynski - Heteroclin…
By folding an autonomous system of rational equations in the plane to a scalar difference equation, we show that the rational system has coexisting periodic orbits of all possible periods as well as stable aperiodic orbits for certain parameter ranges.
In the planar $N$-center problem, for a non-trivial free homotopy class of the configuration space satisfying certain mild condition, we show that there is at least one collision free $T$-periodic solution for any positive $T.$ We use the direct method of calculus of variations and the main difficulty is to show that minimizers under certain topological constraints are free of collision.
We derived explicit symbolic expressions for the first, second, and third Lyapunov coefficients of the complex focus of a planar system modelling activity of a neural network. The analysis of these expressions allowed us to obtain new results about the number and location of limit cycles in the model.
The paper deals with the study of a satellite attracted by n primary bodies, which form a relative equilibrium. We use orthogonal degree to prove global bifurcation of planar and spatial periodic solutions from the equilibria of the satellite. In particular, we analyze the restricted three body problem and the problem of a satellite attracted by the Maxwell's ring relative equilibrium.
In this paper, we consider the problem of determining the \emph{exact} number of periodic orbits for polynomial planar flows. This problem is a variant of Hilbert's 16th problem. Using a natural definition of computability, we show that the problem is noncomputable on the one hand and, on the other hand, computable uniformly on the set of all structurally stable systems defined on the unit disk. We also prove that there is a family of polynomial planar systems which does not have a computable sharp upper bound on the number of its periodic orbits.
We present the Euler--Langrage equations for a many-body system of coupled planar pendulums. Hence, imposing initial condition data, the equations of motion are linearized and later developed in an idealized model for the pseudo-periodicity of the system as a function of the number of pendulums $N$. The result is empirically corroborated by comparing the model with data obtained via a numerical simulation, and by employing Kane's Method integrator in Python.
Periodic and quasi-periodic solutions of the n-body problem can be found as minimizers of the Lagrangian action functional restricted to suitable spaces of symmetric paths. The main purpose of this paper is to develop a systematic approach to the equivariant minimization for the three-body problem in the three-dimensional space. First we give a finite complete list of symmetry groups fit to the minimization of the action, with the property that any other symmetry group can be reduced to be isomorphic to one of these representatives. A second step is to prove that the resulting (local and globa…
We determine periodic and aperiodic points of certain piecewise affine maps in the Euclidean plane. Using these maps, we prove for $λ\in\{\frac{\pm1\pm\sqrt5}2,\pm\sqrt2,\pm\sqrt3\}$ that all integer sequences $(a_k)_{k\in\mathbb Z}$ satisfying $0\le a_{k-1}+λa_k+a_{k+1}<1$ are periodic.
In this work we prove the lower bound for the number of $T$-periodic solutions of an asymptotically linear planar Hamiltonian system. Precisely, we show that such a system, $T$-periodic in time, with $T$-Maslov indices $i_0,i_\infty$ at the origin and at infinity, has at least $|i_\infty-i_0|$ periodic solutions, and an additional one if $i_0$ is even. Our argument combines the Poincaré--Birkhoff Theorem with an application of topological degree. We illustrate the sharpness of our result, and extend it to the case of second orders ODEs with linear-like behaviour at zero and infinity.
The famous conjecture of V.Ya.Ivrii (1978) says that {\it in every billiard with infinitely-smooth boundary in a Euclidean space the set of periodic orbits has measure zero}. In the present paper we study the complex version of Ivrii's conjecture for odd-periodic orbits in planar billiards, with reflections from complex analytic curves. We prove positive answer in the following cases: 1) triangular orbits; 2) odd-periodic orbits in the case, when the mirrors are algebraic curves avoiding two special points at infinity, the so-called isotropic points. We provide immediate applications to the re…
When the planar circular restricted 3-body problem (RTBP) is periodically perturbed, families of unstable periodic orbits break up into whiskered tori, with most tori persisting into the perturbed system. In this study, we 1) develop a quasi-Newton method which simultaneously solves for the tori and their center, stable, and unstable directions; 2) implement continuation by both perturbation as well as rotation numbers; 3) compute Fourier-Taylor parameterizations of the stable and unstable manifolds; 4) regularize the equations of motion; and 5) globalize these manifolds. Our methodology impro…

The existence and bifurcation of homoclinic orbits in planar piecewise linear homogeneous systems with two regions separated by a discontinuity boundary are investigated in this paper. In addition, existence of periodic orbits and stability of the origin are also discussed without the assumption of continuity for the planar piecewise linear homogeneous systems.
In this paper, we study the number of limit cycles that can bifurcating from a periodic annulus in discontinuous planar piecewise linear Hamiltonian differential system with three zones separated by two parallel straight lines. We prove that if the central subsystem, i.e. the system defined between the two parallel lines, has a real center and the others subsystems have centers or saddles, then we have at least three limit cycles that appear after perturbations of periodic annulus. For this, we study the number of zeros of a Melnikov function for piecewise Hamiltonian system and present a norm…
In the restricted three-body problem, consecutive collision orbits are those orbits which start and end at collisions with one of the primaries. Interests for such orbits arise not only from mathematics but also from various engineering problems. In this article, using Floer homology, we show that there are either a periodic collisional orbit, or infinitely many consecutive collision orbits in the planar circular restricted three-body problem on each bounded component of the energy hypersurface for Jacobi energy below the first critical value.
We consider a periodic planar Lorentz process with strictly convex obstacles and finite horizon. This process describes the displacement of a particle moving in the plane with unit speed and with elastic reflection on the obstacles. We call number of self-intersections of this Lorentz process the number V(n) of couples of integers (k,m) smaller than n such that the particle hits a same obstacle both at the k-th and at the m-th collision times. The aim of this paper is to prove that the variance of V(n) is equivalent to cn^2 (such a result has recently been proved for simple planar random walks…
In this work we perform a numerical exploration of the families of planar periodic orbits in the Hill's approximation in the restricted four body problem, that is, after a symplectic scaling, two massive bodies are sent to infinity, by mean of expanding the potential as a power series in m3^1/3, (the mass of the third small primary) and taking the limit case when m3 tends to zero. The limiting Hamiltonian depends on a parameter mu (the mass of the second primary) and possesses some dynamical features from both the classical restricted three- body problem and the restricted four-body problem. W…
We deal with a mechanism of generating distributional chaos in planar nonautonomous ODEs and try to measure chaosity in terms of topological entropy. It is based on the interplay between simple periodic solutions. We prove the existence of infinitely many heteroclinic solutions betwen the periodic ones.
Characterizing existence or not of periodic orbit is a classical problem and it has both theoretical importance and many real applications. Here, several new criterions on nonexistence of periodic orbits of the planar dynamical system $\dot x=y,~\dot y=-g(x)-f(x,y)y$ are obtained in this paper, and by examples showing that these criterions are applicable, but the known ones are invalid to them. Based on these criterions, we further characterize the local topological structures of its equilibrium, which also show that one of the classical results by A.F. Andreev [Amer. Math. Soc. Transl. 8 (195…
Since Poincaré, periodic orbits have been one of the most important objects in dynamical systems. However, searching them is in general quite difficult. A common way to find them is to construct families of periodic orbits which start at obvious periodic orbits. On the other hand, given two periodic orbits one might ask if they are connected by an orbit cylinder, i.e., by a one-parameter family of periodic orbits. In this article we study this question for a certain class of periodic orbits in the planar circular restricted three-body problem. Our strategy is to compare the Cieliebak-Frauenfel…
Given $n$ point masses turning in a plane at a constant speed, this paper deals with the global bifurcation of periodic solutions for the masses, in that plane and in space. As a special case, one has a complete study of n identical masses on a regular polygon and a central mass. The symmetries of the problem are used in order to find the irreducible representations, the linearization, and with the help of the orthogonal degree theory, all the symmetries of the bifurcating branches.
For the Restricted Circular Planar 3 Body Problem, we show that there exists an open set $\mathcal U$ in phase space independent of fixed measure, where the set of initial points which lead to collision is $O(μ^\frac{1}{20})$ dense as $μ\rightarrow 0$.
In this paper we provide a dynamical characterization of isolated invariant continua which are global attractors for planar dissipative flows. As a consequence, a sufficient condition for an isolated invariant continuum to be either an attractor or a repeller is derived for general planar flows.
In this paper, we study the variational properties of two special orbits: the Schubart orbit and the Broucke-Hénon orbit. We show that under an appropriate topological constraint, the action minimizer must be either the Schubart orbit or the Broucke-Hénon orbit. One of the main challenges is to prove that the Schubart orbit coincides with the action minimizer connecting a collinear configuration with a binary collision and an isosceles configuration. A new geometric argument is introduced to overcome this challenge.
We hereby introduce and study the notion of self-contracted curves, which encompasses orbits of gradient systems of convex and quasiconvex functions. Our main result shows that bounded self-contracted planar curves have a finite length. We also give an example of a convex function defined in the plane whose gradient orbits spiral infinitely many times around the unique minimum of the function.
The restricted planar four body problem describes the motion of a massless body under the Newtonian gravitational force of other three bodies (the primaries), of which the motion gives us general solutions of the three body problem. A trajectory is called {\it oscillatory} if it goes arbitrarily faraway but returns infinitely many times to the same bounded region. We prove the existence of such type of trajectories provided the primaries evolve in suitable periodic orbits.
We present a computer assisted proof of existence of a family of Lyapunov orbits which stretches from L2 up to half the distance to the smaller primary in the Jupiter-Sun planar restricted circular three body problem. We then focus on a small family of Lyapunov orbits with energies close to comet Oterma and show that their associated invariant manifolds intersect transversally. Our computer assisted proof provides explicit bounds on the location and on the angle of intersection.
The restricted planar elliptic three body problem models the motion of a massless body under the Newtonian gravitational force of the two other bodies, the primaries, which evolve in Keplerian ellipses. A trajectory is called oscillatory if it leaves every bounded region but returns infinitely often to some fixed bounded region. We prove the existence of such type of trajectories for any values for the masses of the primaries provided they make almost circular orbits.
It is well known that a planar central configuration of the $n$-body problem gives rise to solutions where each particle moves on a specific Keplerian orbit while the totality of the particles move on a homographic motion. When the eccentricity $e$ of the Keplerian orbit belongs in $[0,1)$, following Meyer and Schmidt, we call such solutions elliptic relative equilibria (shortly, ERE). In order to study the linear stability of ERE in the near-collision case, namely when $1-e$ is small enough, we introduce the collision index for planar central configurations. The collision index is a Maslov-ty…
It is shown that in the planar equal-mass four-body problem, there exist two sets of new action minimizers connecting two planar boundary configurations with fixed symmetry axes and specific order constraints on the four bodies: a double isosceles configuration and an isosceles trapezoid configuration. By applying the level estimate method, these minimizers are shown to be collision-free and they can be extended to two new sets of periodic or quasi-periodic orbits.
We study the stability of periodic trajectories of planar inverse magnetic billiards, a dynamical system whose trajectories are straight lines inside a connected planar domain $Ω$ and circular arcs outside $Ω$. Explicit examples are calculated in circles, ellipses, and the one parameter family of curves $x^{2k}+y^{2k}=1$. Comparisons are made to the linear stability of periodic billiard and magnetic billiard trajectories.
We consider a conservative system with small periodic perturbations under the assumption that the divergence of the perturbed system is negative. The main theorems provide universal sufficient conditions for the existence and asymptotic stability of periodic solutions that apply regardless of whether the zeros of the bifurcation function are simple or not.
Periodic solutions of the planar $N$-body problem determine braids through the trajectory of $N$ bodies. Braid types can be used to classify periodic solutions. According to the Nielsen-Thurston classification of surface automorphisms, braids fall into three types: periodic, reducible and pseudo-Anosov. To a braid of pseudo-Anosov type, there is an associated stretch factor greater than 1, and this is a conjugacy invariant of braids. In 2006, the third author discovered a family of multiple choreographic solutions of the planar $2n$-body problem. We prove that braids obtained from the solution…
The famous conjecture of V.Ya.Ivrii (1978) says that {\it in every billiard with infinitely-smooth boundary in a Euclidean space the set of periodic orbits has measure zero}. In the present paper we study the complex algebraic version of Ivrii's conjecture for quadrilateral orbits in two dimensions, with reflections from complex algebraic curves. We present the complete classification of 4-reflective algebraic counterexamples: billiards formed by four complex algebraic curves in the projective plane that have open set of quadrilateral orbits.
This paper constructs a certain planar four-body problem which exhibits fast energy growth. The system considered is a quasi-periodic perturbation of the Restricted Planar Circular three-body Problem (RPC3BP). Gelfreich-Turaev's and de la Llave's mechanism is employed to obtain the fast energy growth. The diffusion is created by a heteroclinic cycle formed by two Lyapunov periodic orbits surrounding $L_1$ and $L_2$ Lagrangian points and their heteroclinic intersections. Our model is the first known example in celestial mechanics of the a priori chaotic case of Arnold diffusion.
For an analytic differential system in $\mathbb R^n$ with a periodic orbit, we will prove that if the system is analytically integrable around the periodic orbit, i.e. it has $n-1$ functionally independent analytic first integrals defined in a neighborhood of the periodic orbit, then the system is analytically equivalent to its Poincaré--Dulac type normal form. This result is an extension for analytic integrable differential systems around a singularity to the ones around a periodic orbit.
Many unstable periodic orbits of the planar circular restricted 3-body problem (PCRTBP) persist as invariant tori when a periodic forcing is added to the equations of motion. In this study, we compute tori corresponding to exterior Jupiter-Europa and interior Jupiter-Ganymede PCRTBP resonant periodic orbits in a concentric circular restricted 4-body problem (CCR4BP). Motivated by the 2:1 Laplace resonance between Europa and Ganymede's orbits, we then attempt the continuation of a Jupiter-Europa 3:4 resonant orbit from the CCR4BP into the Jupiter-Ganymede PCRTBP. We strongly believe that the re…
Planar piecewise linear systems with two linearity zones separated by a straight line and with a periodic orbit at infinity are considered. By using some changes of variables and parameters, a reduced canonical form with five parameters is obtained. Instead of the usual Bendixson transformation to work near infinity, a more direct approach is introduced by taking suitable coordinates for the crossing points of the possible periodic orbits with the separation straight line. The required computations to characterize the stability and bifurcations of the periodic orbit at infinity are much easier…
