The restricted planar four body problem describes the motion of a massless body under the Newtonian gravitational force of other three bodies (the primaries), of which the motion gives us general solutions of the three body problem.
A trajectory is called {\it oscillatory} if it goes arbitrarily faraway but returns infinitely many times to the same bounded region. We prove the existence of such type of trajectories provided the primaries evolve in suitable periodic orbits.
The restricted planar elliptic three body problem models the motion of a massless body under the Newtonian gravitational force of the two other bodies, the primaries, which evolve in Keplerian ellipses. A trajectory is called oscillatory if it leaves every bounded region but returns infinitely often to some fixed bounded region. We prove the existence of such type of trajectories for any values for the masses of the primaries provided they make almost circular orbits.
Consider the Restricted Planar Circular 3 Body Problem with both realistic mass ratio and Jacobi constant for the Sun-Jupiter pair. We prove the existence of all possible combinations of past and future final motions. In particular, we obtain the existence of oscillatory motions. All the constructed trajectories cross the orbit of Jupiter but avoid close encounters with it. The proof relies on the method of correctly aligned windows and is computer assisted.
A fundamental question in Celestial Mechanics is to analyze the possible final motions of the Restricted $3$-body Problem, that is, to provide the qualitative description of its complete (i.e. defined for all time) orbits as time goes to infinity. According to the classification given by Chazy back in 1922, a remarkable possible behaviour is that of oscillatory motions, where the motion $q$ of the massless body is unbounded but returns infinitely often inside some bounded region: \[ \limsup_{t\to\pm\infty} |q(t)|=\infty\qquad\qquad\text{and}\qquad\qquad \liminf_{t\to\pm\infty} |q(t)|<\infty. \…
In this paper we consider the circular restricted three body problem which models the motion of a masless body under the influence of the Newtionan gravitational force caused by two other bodies, the primaries, which move along cicular planar Keplerian orbits. In a suitable system of coordinates, this system has two degrees of freedom and the conserved energy is usually called the Jacobi constant. In 1980, J. Llibre and C. Simó proved the existence of oscillatory motions for the restricted planar circular three body problem, that is, of orbits which leave every bounded region but which return …
For the Restricted Circular Planar 3 Body Problem, we show that there exists an open set $\mathcal U$ in phase space independent of fixed measure, where the set of initial points which lead to collision is $O(μ^\frac{1}{20})$ dense as $μ\rightarrow 0$.
Double averaged planar restricted elliptic three-body problem has a two-parametric family of stable equilibria. We show that these equilibria are stable in the linear approximation as equilibria of the double averaged spatial restricted elliptic three-body problem. They are Lyapunov stable for all values of parameters but, possibly, parameters from some finite set of analytic curves.
This paper constructs a certain planar four-body problem which exhibits fast energy growth. The system considered is a quasi-periodic perturbation of the Restricted Planar Circular three-body Problem (RPC3BP). Gelfreich-Turaev's and de la Llave's mechanism is employed to obtain the fast energy growth. The diffusion is created by a heteroclinic cycle formed by two Lyapunov periodic orbits surrounding $L_1$ and $L_2$ Lagrangian points and their heteroclinic intersections. Our model is the first known example in celestial mechanics of the a priori chaotic case of Arnold diffusion.
The paper deals with the study of a satellite attracted by n primary bodies, which form a relative equilibrium. We use orthogonal degree to prove global bifurcation of planar and spatial periodic solutions from the equilibria of the satellite. In particular, we analyze the restricted three body problem and the problem of a satellite attracted by the Maxwell's ring relative equilibrium.
We present a method for proving the existence of symmetric periodic, heteroclinic or homoclinic orbits in dynamical systems with the reversing symmetry. As an application we show that the Planar Restricted Circular Three Body Problem (PCR3BP) corresponding to the Sun-Jupiter-Oterma system possesses an infinite number of symmetric periodic orbits and homoclinic orbits to the Lyapunov orbits. Moreover, we show the existence of symbolic dynamics on six symbols for PCR3BP and the possibility of resonance transitions of the comet. This extends earlier results by Wilczak and Zgliczynski - Heteroclin…
We present a computer assisted proof of existence of a family of Lyapunov orbits which stretches from L2 up to half the distance to the smaller primary in the Jupiter-Sun planar restricted circular three body problem. We then focus on a small family of Lyapunov orbits with energies close to comet Oterma and show that their associated invariant manifolds intersect transversally. Our computer assisted proof provides explicit bounds on the location and on the angle of intersection.
A method to establish regions of phase space through which pass no invariant tori transverse to a given direction field is applied to the planar circular restricted three-body problem. Implications for the location of stable orbits for planets around a binary star are deduced. It is expected that lessons learnt from this problem will be useful for applications of the method to other contexts such as flux surfaces for magnetic fields, guiding centre motion in magnetic fields, and classical models of chemical reaction dynamics.
We have discussed non-linear stability in photogravitational non-planar restricted three body problem with oblate smaller primary. By photogravitational we mean that both primaries are radiating. We normalised the Hamiltonian using Lie transform as in Coppola and Rand (1989). We transformed the system into Birkhoff's normal form. Lie transforms reduce the system to an equivalent simpler system which is immediately solvable. Applying Arnold's theorem, we have found non-linear stability criteria. We conclude that $L_6$ is stable. We plotted graphs for $(ω_1, D_2).$ They are rectangular hyperbola…
We introduce a circular restricted charged three-body problem on the plane. In this model, the gravitational and Coulomb forces, due to the primary bodies, act on a test particle; the net force exerted by some primary body on the test particle can be attractive, repulsive or null. The restricted problem is obtained by the general planar charged three-body problem considering one mass of the three bodies going to zero. We obtain necessary restrictions for the parameters that appear in the problem, in order to be well defined. Taking into account such restriction, we study the existence and line…
The set of transverse homoclinic intersections for a saddle-focus equilibrium in the planar equilateral restricted four-body problem admit certain simple homoclinic orbits which form the skeleton of the complete homoclinic intersection -- or homoclinic web. In the present work, the planar restricted four-body problem is viewed as an invariant subsystem of the spatial problem, and the influence of this planar homoclinic skeleton on the spatial dynamics is studied from a numerical point of view. Starting from the vertical Lyapunov families emanating from saddle focus equilibria, we compute the s…
We consider the elliptic three body problem as a perturbation of the circular problem. We show that for sufficiently small eccentricities of the elliptic problem, and for energies sufficiently close to the energy of the libration point L2, a Cantor set of Lyapounov orbits survives the perturbation. The orbits are perturbed to quasi-periodic invariant tori. We show that for a certain family of masses of the primaries, for such tori we have transversal intersections of stable and unstable manifolds, which lead to chaotic dynamics involving diffusion over a short range of energy levels. Some part…
Consider the planar restricted $(N+1)$-body problem with trajectories of the $N(\ge 2)$ primaries forming a collision-free periodic solution of the $N$-body problem, for any positive energy $h$ and directions $θ_{\pm} \in [0, 2π)$, we prove that starting from any initial position $x$ at any initial time $t_x$, there are hyperbolic solutions $γ^{\pm}|_{[t_x, \pm \infty)}$ satisfying $γ^{\pm}(t_x) =x$ and $$ \lim_{t \to \pm \infty} γ^{\pm}(t) / |γ^{\pm}(t)| = e^{i θ_{\pm} (\text{mod } 2π)}, \;\;\lim_{ t \to \pm \infty} \dotγ^{\pm}(t) = \pm \sqrt{2h} e^{i θ_{\pm} (\text{mod } 2π)}.$$ Moreover we …
Chaotic phenomena in generic unfoldings of the Hamilton Hopf bifurcation with emphasis on the restricted planar circular 3-body problem beyond the Gascheau-Routh mass ratio
In the restricted three-body problem, consecutive collision orbits are those orbits which start and end at collisions with one of the primaries. Interests for such orbits arise not only from mathematics but also from various engineering problems. In this article, using Floer homology, we show that there are either a periodic collisional orbit, or infinitely many consecutive collision orbits in the planar circular restricted three-body problem on each bounded component of the energy hypersurface for Jacobi energy below the first critical value.
Consider the planar 3 Body Problem with masses $m_0,m_1,m_2>0$. In this paper we address two fundamental questions: the existence of oscillatory motions and of chaotic hyperbolic sets. In 1922, Chazy classified the possible final motions of the three bodies, that is the behaviors the bodies may have when time tends to infinity. One of the possible behaviors are oscillatory motions, that is, solutions of the 3 Body Problem such that the positions of the bodies $q_0, q_1, q_2$ satisfy \[ \liminf_{t\to\pm\infty}\sup_{i,j=0,1,2, i\neq j}\|q_i-q_j\|<+\infty \quad \text{ and }\quad \limsup_{t\to\pm\…

In this work we perform a numerical exploration of the families of planar periodic orbits in the Hill's approximation in the restricted four body problem, that is, after a symplectic scaling, two massive bodies are sent to infinity, by mean of expanding the potential as a power series in m3^1/3, (the mass of the third small primary) and taking the limit case when m3 tends to zero. The limiting Hamiltonian depends on a parameter mu (the mass of the second primary) and possesses some dynamical features from both the classical restricted three- body problem and the restricted four-body problem. W…
When the planar circular restricted 3-body problem (RTBP) is periodically perturbed, families of unstable periodic orbits break up into whiskered tori, with most tori persisting into the perturbed system. In this study, we 1) develop a quasi-Newton method which simultaneously solves for the tori and their center, stable, and unstable directions; 2) implement continuation by both perturbation as well as rotation numbers; 3) compute Fourier-Taylor parameterizations of the stable and unstable manifolds; 4) regularize the equations of motion; and 5) globalize these manifolds. Our methodology impro…
We consider the planar restricted $N$-body problem where the $N-1$ primaries are assumed to be in a central configuration whereas the infinitesimal particle escapes to infinity in a parabolic orbit. We prove the existence of transversal intersections between the stable and unstable manifolds of the parabolic orbits at infinity which guarantee the existence of a Smale's horseshoe. This implies the occurrence of chaotic motions but also of oscillatory motions, that is, orbits for which the massless particle leaves every bounded region but it returns infinitely often to some fixed bounded region.…
Many unstable periodic orbits of the planar circular restricted 3-body problem (PCRTBP) persist as invariant tori when a periodic forcing is added to the equations of motion. In this study, we compute tori corresponding to exterior Jupiter-Europa and interior Jupiter-Ganymede PCRTBP resonant periodic orbits in a concentric circular restricted 4-body problem (CCR4BP). Motivated by the 2:1 Laplace resonance between Europa and Ganymede's orbits, we then attempt the continuation of a Jupiter-Europa 3:4 resonant orbit from the CCR4BP into the Jupiter-Ganymede PCRTBP. We strongly believe that the re…
The restricted planar three-body problem has a rich history, yet many unanswered questions still remain. In the present paper we prove the existence of a global surface of section near the smaller body in a new range of energies and mass ratios for which the Hill's region still has three connected components. The approach relies on recent global methods in symplectic geometry and contrasts sharply with the perturbative methods used until now.
In this work, we revisit the planar restricted four-body problem to study the dynamics of an infinitesimal mass under the gravitational force produced by three heavy bodies with unequal masses, forming an equilateral triangle configuration. We unify known results about the existence and linear stability of equilibrium points of this problem which have been obtained earlier, either as relative equilibria or a central configuration of the planar restricted $(3 + 1)$-body problem. It is the first attempt in this direction. A systematic numerical investigation is performed to obtain the resonance …
We present a diffusion mechanism for time-dependent perturbations of autonomous Hamiltonian systems introduced in [25]. This mechanism is based on shadowing of pseudo-orbits generated by two dynamics: an `outer dynamics', given by homoclinic trajectories to a normally hyperbolic invariant manifold, and an `inner dynamics', given by the restriction to that manifold. On the inner dynamics the only assumption is that it preserves area. Unlike other approaches, [25] does not rely on the KAM theory and/or Aubry-Mather theory to establish the existence of diffusion. Moreover, it does not require to …
We give a proof of existence of centre manifolds within large domains for systems with an integral of motion. The proof is based on a combination of topological tools, normal forms and rigorous-computer-assisted computations. We apply our method to obtain an explicit region in which we prove existence of a center manifold in the planar Restricted Three Body Problem.
We study the dynamics of the restricted planar three-body problem near mean motion resonances, i.e. a resonance involving the Keplerian periods of the two lighter bodies revolving around the most massive one. This problem is often used to model Sun--Jupiter--asteroid systems. For the primaries (Sun and Jupiter), we pick a realistic mass ratio $μ=10^{-3}$ and a small eccentricity $e_0>0$. The main result is a construction of a variety of non local diffusing orbits which show a drastic change of the osculating (instant) eccentricity of the asteroid, while the osculating semi major axis is kept a…
In recent years, stable and unstable manifolds of invariant objects (such as libration points and periodic orbits) have been increasingly recognized as an efficient tool for designing transfer trajectories in space missions. However, most methods currently used in mission design rely on using eigenvectors of the linearized dynamics as local approximations of the manifolds. Since such approximations are not accurate except very close to the base invariant object, this requires large amounts of numerical integration to globalize the manifolds and locate intersections. In this paper, we study hyp…

We present a computer assisted proof or diffusion in the Planar Elliptic Restricted Three Body Problem. We treat the elliptic problem as a perturbation of the circular problem, where the perturbation parameter is the eccentricity of the primaries. The unperturbed system preserves energy, and we show that for sufficiently small perturbations we have orbits with explicit energy changes, independent from the size of the perturbation. The result is based on shadowing of orbits along transversal intersections of stable/unstable manifolds of a normally hyperbolic cylinder.
In this work we introduce a planar restricted four-body problem where a massless particle moves under the gravitational influence due to three bodies following the eight figure choreography, and we explore some symmetric periodic orbits of this system which turns out to be non autonomous. We demonstrate that certain families of involutions are reversing symmetries of certain N-body problem. We consider a particular case of such families of reversing symmetries and we use it to study both theoretically and numerically certain type of symmetric periodic orbits of this system. The symmetric perio…
We prove the existence of chaotic motions in a planar restricted four body problem, establishing that the system is not integrable. The idea of the proof is to verify the hypotheses of a topological forcing theorem. The forcing theorem applies to two freedom Hamiltonian systems where the stable and unstable manifolds of a saddle-focus equilibrium intersect transversally in the energy level set of the equilibrium. We develop a mathematically rigorous computer assisted argument which verifies the hypotheses of the forcing theorem, and we implement our approach for the restricted four body proble…
We describe a method for computing an atlas for the stable or unstable manifold attached to an equilibrium point, and implement the method for the saddle-focus libration points of the planar equilateral restricted four body problem. We employ the method at the maximally symmetric case of equal masses, where we compute atlases for both the stable and unstable manifolds. The resulting atlases are comprised of thousands of individual chart maps, with each chart represented by a two variable Taylor polynomial. Post-processing the atlas data yields approximate intersections of the invariant manifol…
The problem of nonintegrability of the circular restricted three-body problem is very classical and important in dynamical systems. In the first volume of his masterpieces, Henri Poincaré showed the nonexistence of a real-analytic first integral which is functionally independent of the Hamiltonian and real-analytic in a small parameter representing the mass ratio as well as in the state variables, in both the planar and spatial cases. However, his proof was very complicated and unclear. In this paper, we give a new and simple proof of a very similar result for both the planar and spatial cases…
Rapid GPU-Assisted Search and Parameterization-Based Refinement and Continuation of Connections between Tori in Periodically Perturbed Planar Circular Restricted 3-Body Problems
We show that the planar circular restricted three body problem is of restricted contact type for all energies below the first critical value (action of the first Lagrange point) and for energies slightly above it. This opens up the possibility of using the technology of Contact Topology to understand this particular dynamical system.
Morse theoretical ideas are applied to the study of relative equilibria in the planar $n$-vortex problem. For the case of positive circulations, we prove that the Morse index of a critical point of the Hamiltonian restricted to a level surface of the angular impulse is equal to the number of pairs of real eigenvalues of the corresponding relative equilibrium periodic solution. The Morse inequalities are then used to prove the instability of some families of relative equilibria in the four-vortex problem with two pairs of equal vorticities. We also show that, for positive circulations, relative…
We apply Arnold's theory of generic smooth plane curves to Stark-Zeeman systems. This is a class of Hamiltonian dynamical systems that describes the dynamics of an electron in an external electric and magnetic field, and includes many systems from celestial mechanics. Based on Arnold's $J^+$-invariant, we introduce invariants of periodic orbits in planar Stark-Zeeman systems and study their behaviour.
We propose a contact-topological approach to the spatial circular restricted three-body problem, for energies below and slightly above the first critical energy value. We prove the existence of a circle family of global hypersurfaces of section for the regularized dynamics. Below the first critical value, these hypersurfaces are diffeomorphic to the unit disk cotangent bundle of the $2$-sphere, and they carry symplectic forms on their interior, which are each deformation equivalent to the standard symplectic form. The boundary of the global hypersurface of section is an invariant set for the r…
The planar circular restricted three body problem (PCRTBP) is symmetric with respect to the line of masses and there is a corresponding anti-symplectic involution on the cotangent bundle of the 2-sphere in the regularized PCRTBP. Recently it was shown that each bounded component of an energy hypersurface with low energy for the regularized PCRTBP is fiberwise starshaped. This enable us to define a Lagrangian Rabinowitz Floer homology which is related to periodic orbits symmetric for the anti-symplectic involution in the regularized PCRTBP and hence to symmetric periodic orbits in the unregular…
Two numerical algorithms for analyzing planar central and balanced configurations in the $(n+1)$-body problem with a small mass are presented. The first one relies on a direct solution method of the $(n+1)$-body problem by using a stochastic optimization approach, while the second one relies on an analytic-continuation method, which involves the solutions of the $n$-body and the restricted $(n+1)$-body problem, and the application of a local search procedure to compute the final $(n+1)$-body configuration in the neighborhood of the configuration obtained at the first two steps. Some exemplary …
We study the linear and nonlinear stability of relative equilibria in the planar N-vortex problem, adapting the approach of Moeckel from the corresponding problem in celestial mechanics. After establishing some general theory, a topological approach is taken to show that for the case of positive circulations, a relative equilibrium is linearly stable if and only if it is a nondegenerate minimum of the Hamiltonian restricted to a level surface of the angular impulse (moment of inertia). Using a criterion of Dirichlet's, this implies that any linearly stable relative equilibrium with positive vo…
Since Poincaré, periodic orbits have been one of the most important objects in dynamical systems. However, searching them is in general quite difficult. A common way to find them is to construct families of periodic orbits which start at obvious periodic orbits. On the other hand, given two periodic orbits one might ask if they are connected by an orbit cylinder, i.e., by a one-parameter family of periodic orbits. In this article we study this question for a certain class of periodic orbits in the planar circular restricted three-body problem. Our strategy is to compare the Cieliebak-Frauenfel…
