In this paper, we mainly consider the relative isoperimetric inequalities for minimal submanifolds with free boundary. We first generalize ideas of restricted normal cones introduced by Choe-Ghomi-Ritoré in \cite{CGR06} and obtain an optimal area estimate for generalized restricted normal cones. This area estimate, together with the ABP method of Cabré in \cite{Cabre2008}, provides a new proof of the relative isoperimetric inequality obtained by Choe-Ghomi-Ritoré in \cite{CGR07}. Furthermore, we use this estimate and the idea of Brendle in his recent work \cite{Brendle2019} to obtain a relative isoperimetric inequality for minimal submanifolds with free boundary on a convex support surface in $\mathbb{R}^{n+m}$, which is optimal and gives an affirmative answer to an open problem proposed by Choe in \cite{Choe2005}, Open Problem 12.6, when the codimension $m\leq 2$.
In this paper, we prove a Sobolev and isoperimetric inequalities for submanifold in weighted manifold. Our results generalize the Hoffman-Spruck's inequalities.
We prove a Sobolev inequality which holds on submanifolds in Euclidean space of arbitrary dimension and codimension. This inequality is sharp if the codimension is at most 2. As a special case, we obtain a sharp isoperimetric inequality for minimal submanifolds in Euclidean space of codimension at most 2.
We prove an isoperimetric-type inequality for maximal, spacelike submanifold in the Minkowski space. The argument is based on the recent work of Brendle.
We obtain an estimate of the Cheeger isoperimetric constant in terms of the volume growth for a properly immersed submanifold in a Riemannian manifold which possesses at least one pole and sectional curvature bounded from above .
Based on Markvorsen and Palmer's work on mean time exit and isoperimetric inequalities we establish slightly better isoperimetric inequalities and mean time exit estimates for minimal submanifolds of $N\times\mathbb{R}$. We also prove isoperimetric inequalities for submanifolds of Hadamard spaces with tamed second fundamental form.
We obtain upper bounds for the isoperimetric quotients of extrinsic balls of submanifolds in ambient spaces which have a lower bound on their radial sectional curvatures. The submanifolds are themselves only assumed to have lower bounds on the radial part of the mean curvature vector field and on the radial part of the intrinsic unit normals at the boundaries of the extrinsic spheres, respectively. In the same vein we also establish lower bounds on the mean exit time for Brownian motion in the extrinsic balls. In those cases, where we may extend our analysis to hold all the way to infinity, we…
The aim of this paper is to prove isoperimetric inequalities on submanifolds of the Euclidean space using mass transportation methods. We obtain a sharp ?weighted isoperimetric inequality? and a nonsharp classical inequality similar to the one obtained by J. Michael and L. Simon. The proof relies on the description of a solution of the problem of Monge when the initial measure is supported in a submanifold and the final one supported in a linear subspace of the same dimension.
In this paper we first prove some linear isoperimetric inequalities for submanifolds in the de Sitter-Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom manifolds. Moreover, the equality is attained. Next, we prove some monotonicity formulas for submanifolds with bounded mean curvature vector in warped product manifolds and, as consequences, we give lower bound estimates for the volume of these submanifolds in terms of the warping function. We conclude the paper with an isoperimetric inequality for minimal surfaces.
In this paper we provide an extension to the Jellett-Minkowski's formula for immersed submanifolds into ambient manifolds which possesses a pole and radial curvatures bounded from above or below by the radial sectional curvatures of a rotationally symmetric model space. Using this Jellett-Minkowski's generalized formula we can focus on several isoperimetric problems. More precisely, on lower bounds for isoperimetric quotients of any precompact domain with smooth boundary, or on the isoperimetric profile of the submanifold and its modified volume. In the particular case of a model space with st…
We prove an sharp anisotropic isoperimetric inequality for a domain outside an Euclidean ball in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n\geq 2$. The proof applies the ABP method to a Neumann boundary value problem.
In this paper we prove general inequalities involving the weighted mean curvature of compact submanifolds immersed in weighted manifolds. As a consequence we obtain a relative linear isoperimetric inequality for such submanifolds. We also prove an extrinsic upper bound to the first non zero eigenvalue of the drift Laplacian on closed submanifolds of weighted manifolds.
Let $Σ$ be a $k$-dimensional complete proper minimal submanifold in the Poincaré ball model $B^n$ of hyperbolic geometry. If we consider $Σ$ as a subset of the unit ball $B^n$ in Euclidean space, we can measure the Euclidean volumes of the given minimal submanifold $Σ$ and the ideal boundary $\partial_\infty Σ$, say $\rvol(Σ)$ and $\rvol(\partial_\infty Σ)$, respectively. Using this concept, we prove an optimal linear isoperimetric inequality. We also prove that if $\rvol(\partial_\infty Σ) \geq \rvol(\mathbb{S}^{k-1})$, then $Σ$ satisfies the classical isoperimetric inequality. By proving the…
For compact Riemannian manifolds with convex boundary, B.White proved the following alternative: Either there is an isoperimetric inequality for minimal hypersurfaces or there exists a closed minimal hypersurface, possibly with a small singular set. There is the natural question if a similar result is true for submanifolds of higher codimension. Specifically, B.White asked if the non-existence of an isoperimetric inequality for k-varifolds implies the existence of a nonzero, stationary, integral k-varifold. We present examples showing that this is not true in codimension greater than two. The …
We consider a variational problem for submanifolds Q $\subset$ M with nonempty boundary $\partial$Q = K. We propose the definition that the boundary K of any critical point Q have constant mean curvature, which seems to be a new perspective when dim Q \textless{} dim M . We then construct small nearly-spherical solutions of this higher codimension CMC prob-lem; these concentrate near the critical points of a certain curvature function.
We prove an inequality for submanifolds of Cartan-Hadamard manifolds, which relates the geometry of a submanifold to the measure of the geodesics in the ambient space which it intersects. For hypersurfaces, this gives an extension of Banchoff and Pohl's isoperimetric inequality to spaces of non-positive curvature. We also prove a modified version of Croke's isoperimetric inequality for hypersurfaces immersed in Cartan-Hadamard manifolds and a sharp, quantitative version of an isoperimetric inequality of Yau in spaces of negative curvature. We discuss the relationship between these results, and…
We prove a sharp logarithmic Sobolev inequality which holds for submanifolds in Euclidean space of arbitrary dimension and codimension. Like the Michael-Simon Sobolev inequality, this inequality includes a term involving the mean curvature.
We study the isoperimetric problem for Euclidean space endowed with a continuous density. In dimension one, we characterize isoperimetric regions for a unimodal density. In higher dimensions, we prove existence results and we derive stability conditions, which lead to the conjecture that for a radial log-convex density, balls about the origin are isoperimetric regions. Finally, we prove this conjecture and the uniqueness of minimizers for the density $\exp (|x|^2)$ by using symmetrization techniques.
For any closed Riemannian manifold $X$ we prove that large isoperimetric regions in $X\times{\mathbb R}^n$ are of the form $X\times$(Euclidean ball). We prove that if $X$ has non-negative Ricci curvature then the only soap bubbles enclosing a large volume are the products $X\times$(Euclidean sphere). We give an example of a surface $X$, with Gaussian curvature negative somewhere, such that the product $X\times{\mathbb R}$ contains stable soap bubbles of arbitrarily large enclosed volume which do not even project surjectively onto the $X$ factor.
We prove spectral, stochastic and mean curvature estimates for complete $m$-submanifolds $φ\colon M \to N$ of $n$-manifolds with a pole $N$ in terms of the comparison isoperimetric ratio $I_{m}$ and the extrinsic radius $r_φ\leq \infty$. Our proof holds for the bounded case $r_φ< \infty$, recovering the known results, as well as for the unbounded case $r_φ=\infty$. In both cases, the fundamental ingredient in these estimates is the integrability over $(0, r_φ)$ of the inverse $I_{m}^{-1}$ of the comparison isoperimetric radius. When $r_φ=\infty$, this condition is guaranteed if $N$ is highly n…
Given a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ without boundary, we show that large isoperimetric regions in $M\times\mathbb{R}^k$ are tubular neighborhoods of $M\times\{x\}$, with $x\in\mathbb{R}^k$.
In this paper we consider the problem of minimizing the relative perimeter under a volume constraint in the interior of a convex body, i.e., a compact convex set in Euclidean space with interior points. We shall not impose any regularity assumption on the boundary of the convex set. Amongst other results, we shall prove the equivalence between Hausdorff and Lipschitz convergence, the continuity of the isoperimetric profile with respect to the Hausdorff distance, and the convergence in Hausdorff distance of sequences of isoperimetric regions and their free boundaries. We shall also describe the …
We establish a new symmetrization procedure for the isoperimetric problem in symmetric spaces of noncompact type. This symmetrization generalizes the well known Steiner symmetrization in euclidean space. In contrast to the classical construction the symmetrized domain is obtained by solving a nonlinear elliptic equation of mean curvature type. We conclude the paper discussing possible applications to the isoperimetric problem in symmetric spaces of noncompact type.
The aim of this paper is to give not only an explicit upper bound of the total Q-curvature but also an induced isoperimetric deficit formula for the complete conformal metrics on $\mathbb R^n$, $n\ge 3$ with scalar curvature being nonnegative near infinity and Q-curvature being absolutely convergent.
In this paper we provide new existence results for isoperimetric sets of large volume in Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and Euclidean volume growth. We find sufficient conditions for their existence in terms of the geometry at infinity of the manifold. As a byproduct we show that isoperimetric sets of big volume always exist on manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature and Euclidean volume growth. Our method combines an asymptotic mass decomposition result for minimizing sequences, a sharp isoperimetric inequality on nonsmooth spaces, and the concavity property of t…
For general varifolds in Euclidean space, we prove an isoperimetric inequality, adapt the basic theory of generalised weakly differentiable functions, and obtain several Sobolev type inequalities. We thereby intend to facilitate the use of varifold theory in the study of diffused surfaces.
Evolving smooth, compact hypersurfaces in R^{n+1} with normal speed equal to a positive power k of the mean curvature improves a certain 'isoperimetric difference' for k >= n-1. As singularities may develop before the volume goes to zero, we develop a weak level-set formulation for such flows and show that the above monotonicity is still valid. This proves the isoperimetric inequality for n <= 7. Extending this to complete, simply connected 3-dimensional manifolds with nonpositive sectional curvature, we give a new proof for the Euclidean isoperimetric inequality on such manifolds.
We study the Riemannian quantiative isoperimetric inequality. We show that direct analogue of the Euclidean quantitative isoperimetric inequality is--in general--false on a closed Riemannian manifold. In spite of this, we show that the inequality is true generically. Moreover, we show that a modified (but sharp) version of the quantitative isoperimetric inequality holds for a real analytic metric, using the Lojasiewicz-Simon inequality. A main novelty of our work is that in all our results we do not require any a priori knowledge on the structure/shape of the minimizers.
For a submanifold M in a Euclidean space, the tangential component x^T of the position vector field x of M is the most natural vector field tangent to the Euclidean submanifold, called the canonical vector field of M. In this article, first we prove that the canonical vector field of every Euclidean submanifold is always conservative. Then we initiate the study of Euclidean submanifolds with incompressible canonical vector fields. In particular, we obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions for the canonical vector field of a Euclidean submanifold to be incompressible. Further, we provide …
The position vector field x is the most elementary and natural geometric object on a Euclidean submanifold $M$. The position vector field plays very important roles in mathematics as well as in physics. Similarly, the tangential component x^T of the position vector field is the most natural vector field tangent to the Euclidean submanifold $M$. We simply call the vector field x^T the \textit{canonical vector field} of the Euclidean submanifold M. In earlier articles, we investigated Euclidean submanifolds whose canonical vector fields are concurrent, concircular, or torse-forming. In this arti…
Motivated by Perelman's Pseudo Locality Theorem for the Ricci flow, we prove that if a Riemannian manifold has Ricci curvature bounded below in a metric ball which moreover has almost maximal volume, then in a smaller ball (in a quantified sense) it holds an almost-euclidean isoperimetric inequality. The result is actually established in the more general framework of non-smooth spaces satisfying local Ricci curvature lower bounds in a synthetic sense via optimal transportation.
The authors obtained the classification theorem for Lagrangian H-umbilical submanifolds in quaternion Euclidean spaces using the idea of quaternion extensors.
In this paper, we prove some isoperimetric bounds for lower order eigenvalues of the Wentzell-Laplace operator on bounded domains of a Euclidean space or a Hadamard manifold, of the Laplacian on closed hypersurfaces of a Euclidean space or a Hadamard manifold, and of a biharmonic Steklov problem on bounded domains of a Euclidean space. Especially, interesting rigidity results can be obtained if sharp bounds were achieved.
We prove that the isoperimetric inequalities in the euclidean and hyperbolic plane hold for all euclidean, respectively hyperbolic, cone-metrics on a disk with singularities of negative curvature. This is a discrete analog of the theorems of Weil and Bol that deal with Riemannian metrics of curvature bounded from above by 0, respectively by -1. A stronger discrete version was proved by A.D.Alexandrov, with a subsequent extension by approximation to metrics of bounded integral curvature. Our proof uses "discrete conformal deformations" of the metric that eliminate the singularities and increase…
In this paper we give local and global parametric classifications of a class of Einstein submanifolds of Euclidean space. The highlight is for submanifolds of codimension two since in this case our assumptions are only of intrinsic nature.
Using the idea of special Legendre curves, the authors obtained the explicit description of flat Lagrangian H-umbilical submanifolds in quaternion Euclidean spaces.
In this short note, we study the asymptotic property of Huisken's functional for mean curvature flow on the minimal submanifolds of Euclidean space. We prove that the limit of Huisken's functional equals to the extrinsic asymptotic volume ratio on the minimal submanifold of Euclidean space.
Systems of ordinary differential equations (or dynamical forms in Lagrangian mechanics), induced by embeddings of smooth fibered manifolds over one-dimensional basis, are considered in the class of variational equations. For a given non-variational system, conditions assuring variationality (the Helmholtz conditions) of the induced system with respect to a submanifold of a Euclidean space are studied, and the problem of existence of these "variational submanifolds" is formulated in general and solved for second-order systems. The variational sequence theory on sheaves of differential forms is …
Let $(M,g)$ be a smooth compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$ with smooth boundary $\partial M$. Suppose that $(M,g)$ admits a scalar-flat conformal metric. We prove that the supremum of the isoperimetric quotient over the scalar-flat conformal class is strictly larger than the best constant of the isoperimetric inequality in the Euclidean space, and consequently is achieved, if either (i) $n\ge 12$ and $\partial M$ has a nonumbilic point; or (ii) $n\ge 10$, $\partial M$ is umbilic and the Weyl tensor does not vanish at some boundary point.
In this paper we initiate the study of Yamabe and quasi-Yamabe solitons on Euclidean submanifolds whose soliton fields are the tangential components of their position vector fields. Several fundamental results of such solitons were proved. In particular, we classify such Yamabe and quasi-Yamabe solitons on Euclidean hypersurfaces.
It is proved some results about existence and non existence of unit normal sections of submanifolds of the Euclidean space and sphere which associated Gauss maps are harmonic. Some applications to CMC hypersurfaces of the sphere and isoparametric submanifolds are obtained too.
We show that a complete Euclidean submanifold with minimal index of relative nullity $ν_0>0$ and Ricci curvature with a certain controlled decay must be a $ν_0$-cylinder. This is an extension of the classical Hartman cylindricity theorem.
} In this article, we put forward a Neumann eigenvalue problem for the bi-harmonic operator $Δ^2$ on a bounded smooth domain $\Om$ in the Euclidean $n$-space ${\bf R}^n$ ($n\ge2$) and then prove that the corresponding first non-zero eigenvalue $Υ_1(\Om)$ admits the isoperimetric inequality of Szegö-Weinberger type: $Υ_1(\Om)\le Υ_1(B_{\Om})$, where $B_{\Om}$ is a ball in ${\bf R}^n$ with the same volume of $\Om$. The isoperimetric inequality of Szegö-Weinberger type for the first nonzero Neumann eigenvalue of the even-multi-Laplacian operators $Δ^{2m}$ ($m\ge1$) on $\Om$ is also exploited.
We prove that if a quasiconvex subset $X$ of a metric space $Y$ has finite Nagata dimension and is Lipschitz $k$-connected or admits Euclidean isoperimetric inequalities up to dimension $k$ for some $k$ then $X$ is isoperimetrically undistorted in $Y$ up to dimension $k+1$. This generalizes and strengthens a recent result of the third named author and has several consequences and applications. It yields for example that in spaces of finite Nagata dimension, Lipschitz connectedness implies Euclidean isoperimetric inequalities, and Euclidean isoperimetric inequalities imply coning inequalities. …
We consider a complete nonnegative biminimal submanifold M (that is, a complete biminimal submanifold with lambda>=0) in a Euclidean space E^N. Assume that the immersion is proper, that is, the preimage of every compact set in E^N is also compact in M. Then, we prove that M is minimal. From this result, we give an affirmative partial answer to Chen's conjecture. For the case of lambda<0, we construct examples of biminimal submanifolds and curves.
We describe several families of Lagrangian submanifolds in the complex Euclidean space which are H-minimal, i.e. critical points of the volume functional restricted to Hamiltonian variations. We make use of various constructions involving planar, spherical and hyperbolic curves, as well as Legendrian submanifolds of the odd-dimensional unit sphere.
Let $(M,g)$ be a smooth compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$ with smooth boundary $\partial M$, admitting a scalar-flat conformal metric. We prove that the supremum of the isoperimetric ratio over the scalar-flat conformal class is strictly larger than the best constant of the isoperimetric inequality in the Euclidean space, and consequently is achieved, if either (i) $9\le n\le 11$ and $\partial M$ has a nonumbilic point; or (ii) $7\le n\le 9$, $\partial M$ is umbilic and the Weyl tensor does not vanish identically on the boundary. This is a continuation of the work \cite{Jin-Xiong} b…
We consider a complete biharmonic immersed submanifold $M$ in an Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^N$. Assume that the immersion is proper, that is, the preimage of every compact set in $\mathbb{E}^N$ is also compact in $M$. Then, we prove that $M$ is minimal. It is considered as an affirmative answer to the global version of Chen's conjecture for biharmonic submanifolds.
An isometric immersion $f:M^n\to \tilde M^n$ from a Riemannian $n$-manifold $M^n$ into a Kähler $n$-manifold $\tilde M^n$ is called {\it Lagrangian} if the complex structure $J$ of the ambient manifold $\tilde M^n$ interchanges each tangent space of $M^n$ with the corresponding normal space. In this paper, we completely classify spherical Lagrangian submanifolds in complex Euclidean spaces. Furthermore, we also provide two corresponding classification theorems for Lagrangian submanifolds in the complex pseudo-Euclidean spaces with arbitrary complex index.
We address the study of some curvature equations for distinguished submanifolds in para-Kähler geometry. We first observe that a para-complex submanifold of a para-Kähler manifold is minimal. Next we describe the extrinsic geometry of Lagrangian submanifolds in the para-complex Euclidean space D^n and discuss a number of examples, such as graphs and normal bundles. We also characterize those Lagrangian surfaces of D^2 which are minimal and have indefinite metric. Finally we describe the Lagrangian self-similar solutions of the Mean Curvature Flow which are SO(n)-equivariant.
We study the problem of existence of regions separating a given amount of volume with the least possible perimeter inside a Euclidean cone. Our main result shows that nonexistence for a given volume implies that the isoperimetric profile of the cone coincides with the one of the half-space. This allows us to give some criteria ensuring existence of isoperimetric regions: for instance, local convexity of the cone at some boundary point. We also characterize which are the stable regions in a convex cone, i.e., second order minima of perimeter under a volume constraint. From this it follows that …
We obtain the parametric equations of all biharmonic Legendre curves and Hopf cylinders in the 3-dimensional unit sphere endowed with the modified Sasakian structure defined by Tanno.
This paper belongs to the realm of conformal geometry and deals with Euclidean submanifolds that admit smooth variations that are infinitesimally conformal. Conformal variations of Euclidean submanifolds is a classical subject in differential geometry. In fact, already in 1917 Cartan classified parametrically the Euclidean hypersurfaces that admit nontrivial conformal variations. Our first main result is a Fundamental theorem for conformal infinitesimal variations. The second is a rigidity theorem for Euclidean submanifolds that lie in low codimension.
Let $f\colon M^{2n}\to\mathbb{R}^{2n+\ell}$, $n \geq 5$, denote a conformal immersion into Euclidean space with codimension $\ell$ of a Kaehler manifold of complex dimension $n$ and free of flat points. For codimensions $\ell=1,2$ we show that such a submanifold can always be locally obtained in a rather simple way, namely, from an isometric immersion of the Kaehler manifold $M^{2n}$ into either $\mathbb{R}^{2n+1}$ or $\mathbb{R}^{2n+2}$, the latter being a class of submanifolds already extensively studied.
