Using the idea of special Legendre curves, the authors obtained the explicit description of flat Lagrangian H-umbilical submanifolds in quaternion Euclidean spaces.
The authors obtained the classification theorem for Lagrangian H-umbilical submanifolds in quaternion Euclidean spaces using the idea of quaternion extensors.
In the present note, first we derive an intrinsic inequality for Pseudo-umbilical spacelike submanifold in an indefinite space form. We use this inequality to show that such submanifold is totally geodesic. In the rest part of this paper, using a result of Aiyama [1], we prove that Pseudo-umbilical spacelike subamnifold is totally umbilical.
$H$-umbilicity was introduced as an analogue of total umbilicity for Lagrangian submanifolds since, in some relevant cases, totally umbilical Lagrangian submanifolds are automatically totally geodesic. In this paper, we show that in the homogeneous nearly Kähler $\mathbb{S}^3\times\mathbb{S}^3$, also $H$-umbilical Lagrangian submanifolds are automatically totally geodesic.
In this paper, by studying the position of umbilical normal vectors in the normal bundle, we prove that pseudo-umbilical totally real submanifolds with flat normal connection in non-flat complex space forms must be minimal.
The purpose of this paper is to classify totally umbilical slant submanifolds of a Kenmotsu manifold. We prove that a totally umbilical slant submanifold $M$ of a Kenmotsu manifold $\bar M$ is either invariant or anti-invariant or $dim M=1$ or the mean curvature vector $H$ of $M$ lies in the invariant normal subbundle. Moreover, we find with an example that every totally umbilical proper slant submanifold is totally geodesic.
The present paper is a continuation of our previous work, where a class of half lightlike submanifolds of almost contact B-metric manifolds was introduced. We study curvature properties of totally and screen totally umbilical such submanifolds as well as of the corresponding semi-Riemannian submanifolds with respect to the associated B-metric.
We present classifications of totally geodesic and totally umbilical Legendrian submanifolds of $(κ,μ)$-spaces with Boeckx invariant $I \leq -1$. In particular, we prove that such submanifolds must be, up to local isometries, among the examples that we explicitly construct.
A totally umbilical submanifold in pseudo-Riemannian manifolds is a fundamental notion, which is characterized by the condition that the second fundamental form is proportional to the metric. It is also a generalization of the notion of a totally geodesic submanifold. In this paper, we classify congruent classes of full totally umbilical submanifolds in non-flat pseudo-Riemannian space forms, and consider their moduli spaces. As a consequence, we show that some moduli spaces of isometric immersions between space forms which one of the same constant curvature are non-Hausdorff.
In this article we complete the classification of the umbilical submanifolds of a Riemannian product of space forms, addressing the case of a conformally flat product $\mathbb{H}^k\times \mathbb{S}^{n-k+1}$, which has not been covered in previous works on the subject. We show that there exists precisely a $p$-parameter family of congruence classes of umbilical submanifolds of $\mathbb{H}^k\times \mathbb{S}^{n-k+1}$ with substantial codimension~$p$, which we prove to be at most $\mbox{min}\,\{k+1, n-k+2\}$. We study more carefully the cases of codimensions one and two and exhibit, respectively,…
We give a complete classification of umbilical submanifolds of arbitrary dimension and codimension of $\Sf^n\times \R$, extending the classification of umbilical surfaces in $\Sf^2\times \R$ by Rabah-Souam and Toubiana as well as the local description of umbilical hypersurfaces in $\Sf^n\times \R$ by Van der Veken and Vrancken. We prove that, besides small spheres in a slice, up to isometries of the ambient space they come in a two-parameter family of rotational submanifolds whose substantial codimension is either one or two and whose profile is a curve in a totally geodesic $\Sf^1\times \R$ o…
In [2] we have classified the Blaschke quasi-umbilical submanifolds in the conformal space ${\mathbb Q}^n_s$. In this paper we shall classify the Blaschke para-umbilical hypersurfaces in the conformal space ${\mathbb Q}^n_s$. That may be also considered as the extension of the classification of the conformal isotropic submanifolds in the conformal space ${\mathbb Q}^n_s$.
For Riemannian submanifolds of a semi-Riemannian manifold, we introduce the concepts of \emph{total shear tensor} and \emph{shear operators} as the trace-free part of the corresponding second fundamental form and shape operators. The relationship between these quantities and the umbilical properties of the submanifold is shown. Several novel notions of umbilical submanifolds are then considered along with the classical concepts of totally umbilical and pseudo-umbilical submanifolds. Then we focus on the case of co-dimension $2$, and we present necessary and sufficient conditions for the subman…
We show that every spherical 2-Dupin submanifold that is not a hypersurface is conformally congruent to the standard embedding of the real, complex, quaternionic or octonionic projective plane. We also classify 2-CPC, 2-umbilical and weakly 2-umbilical submanifolds in space forms.
Given a semi-Riemannian manifold, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a Riemannian submanifold of arbitrary co-dimension to be umbilical along normal directions. We do that by using the so-called \emph{total shear tensor}, i.e., the trace-free part of the second fundamental form. We define the \emph{shear space} and the \emph{umbilical space} as the spaces generated by the total shear tensor and by the umbilical vector fields, respectively. We show that the sum of their dimensions must equal the co-dimension.
We derive total mean curvature integration formulae of a three co-dimensional foliation $\mathcal{F}^{n}$ on a screen integrable half-lightlike submanifold, $M^{n+1}$ in a semi-Riemannian manifold $\overline{M}^{n+3}$. We give generalized differential equations relating to mean curvatures of a totally umbilical half-lightlike submanifold admitting a totally umbilical screen distribution, and show that they are generalizations of those given by [4].
We give a complete classification of submanifolds with parallel second fundamental form of a product of two space forms. We also reduce the classification of umbilical submanifolds with dimension $m\geq 3$ of a product $\Q_{k_1}^{n_1}\times \Q_{k_2}^{n_2}$ of two space forms whose curvatures satisfy $k_1+k_2\neq 0$ to the classification of $m$-dimensional umbilical submanifolds of codimension two of $\Sf^n\times \R$ and $\Hy^n\times \R$. The case of $\Sf^n\times \R$ was carried out in \cite{mt}. As a main tool we derive reduction of codimension theorems of independent interest for submanifolds…
The purpose of the present paper is to study the differential geometric properties of a quaternion CR-submanifold in a locally conformal quaternion Kaehler manifold.
In the present paper, we obtain the basic Chen inequalities for submanifolds of quaternion Kaehler-like statistical manifolds. Also, we discuss the same inequality for Lagrangian submanifolds.
Let M be a compact pseudo-umbilical submanifold of the unit sphere S. In the present note, it is shown that if the normal curvature, scalar curvature S and square of the length of second fundamental form satisfy certain conditions, then M is totally geodesic.
In this paper we establish some inequalities concerning the $k$-Ricci curvature of a slant submanifold in a quaternionic space form. We also obtain obstructions to the existence of quaternionic slant immersions in quaternionic space forms with unfull first normal bundle.
In this paper, authors have established Chen's inequalities for the submanifolds of quaternionic Kaehler manifolds characterized by Ricci quarter-symmetric metric connection. Other than these inequalities, we have also derived generalized normalized Casorati curvature inequalities for the same submanifolds.
In this paper we prove two sharp inequalities involving the normalized scalar curvature and the generalized normalized $δ$-Casorati curvatures for slant submanifolds in quaternionic space forms. We also characterize those submanifolds for which the equality cases hold. These results are a generalization of some recent results concerning the Casorati curvature for a slant submanifold in a quaternionic space form obtained by Slesar et al.: J. Inequal. Appl. 2014, 2014:123.
In this paper, we study the CR submanifolds of maximal CR dimension with flat normal connection of a complex projective space. We first investigate the position of the umbilical normal vector in the normal bundle, especially for the submanifolds of dimension 3. Then as the application, we prove the non-existence of a class of CR submanifolds of maximal CR dimension with flat normal connection.
Minimal Submanifolds of The Complex and Quaternionic Projective and Hyperbolic Spaces $\cn P^{2n-1}$, $\hn P^{2n-1}$, $\cn H^{2n-1}$, $\hn H^{2n-1}$ via Harmonic Morphisms
In this article, I classify the totally geodesic submanifolds in the complex 2-Grassmannians and in the quaternionic 2-Grassmannians. It turns out that for both of these spaces, the earlier classification of maximal totally geodesic submanifolds in Riemannian symmetric spaces of rank 2, published by Chen and Nagano (B.-Y. Chen, T. Nagano, "Totally geodesic submanifolds of symmetric spaces, II", Duke Math. J. 45 (1978), 405--425) is incomplete. For example, G_2(H^n) with n >= 7 contains totally geodesic submanifolds isometric to a HP^2, its metric scaled such that the minimal sectional curvatur…
In this paper, we derived biharmonic equations for pseudo-Riemannian submanifolds of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds which includes the biharmonic equations for submanifolds of Riemannian manifolds as a special case. As applications, we proved that a pseudo-umbilical biharmonic pseudo-Riemannian submanifold of a pseudo-Riemannian manifold has constant mean curvature, we completed the classifications of biharmonic pseudo-Riemannian hypersurfaces with at most two distinct principal curvatures, which were used to give four construction methods to produce proper biharmonic pseudo-Riemannian submanifol…
In [21], the authors initiated the study of quasi generalized CR (QGCR)-null submanifolds. In this paper, attention is drawn to some distributions on ascreen QGCR-null submanifolds in an indefinite nearly cosymplectic manifold. We characterize totally umbilical and irrotational ascreen QGCR-null submanifolds. We finally discuss the geometric effects of geodesity conditions on such submanifold.
In this paper we construct new examples of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in the complex hyperbolic space with large symmetry groups, obtaining three 1-parameter families with cohomegeneity one. We characterize them as the only minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in CH^n foliated by umbilical hypersurfaces of Lagrangian subspaces RH^n of CH^n. Several suitable generalizations of the above construction allow us to get new families of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in CH^n from curves in CH^1 and (n-1)-dimensional minimal Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex space forms CP^n-1, CH^n-1 and C^n-1.…
This paper extends to dimension 4 the results in the article "Second Order Families of Special Lagrangian 3-folds" by Robert Bryant. We consider the problem of classifying the special Lagrangian 4-folds in C^4 whose fundamental cubic at each point has a nontrivial stabilizer in SO(4). Points on special Lagrangian 4-folds where the SO(4)-stabilizer is nontrivial are the analogs of the umbilical points in the classical theory of surfaces. In proving existence for the families of special Lagrangian 4-folds, we used the method of exterior differential systems in Cartan-Kahler theory. This method i…
We provide a classification theorem for compact stable minimal immersions (CSMI) of codimension $1$ or dimension $1$ (codimension $1$ and $2$ or dimension $1$ and $2$) in the product of a complex (quaternionic) projective space with any other Riemannian manifold. We characterize the complex minimal immersions of codimension $2$ or dimension $2$ as the only CSMI in the product of two complex projective spaces. As an application, we characterize the CSMI of codimension $1$ or dimension $1$ (codimension $1$ and $2$ or dimension $1$ and $2$) in the product of a complex (quaternionic) projective sp…
We use the Cartan representations of $SO(3)$ and $SU(3)$, and an irreducible 14-dimensional representation of $Sp(3)$ to construct certain totally geodesic submanifolds in "skew" position in the complex quadrics, the complex 2-Grassmannians and the quaternionic 2-Grassmannians.
In this paper, we consider the rigidity for an $n(\geq 4)$-dimensional submanfolds $M^n$ with parallel mean curvature in the space form ${\mathbb M}^{n+p}_c$ when the integral Ricci curvature of $M$ has some bound. We prove that, if $c+H^2>0$ and $\|\mathrm{Ric}_{-}^λ\|_{n/2}< ε(n,c, λ, H)$ for $λ$ satisfying $ \frac{n-2}{n-1} (c+H^2) < λ\le c+H^2$, then $M$ is the totally umbilical sphere $\mathbb{S}^n(\tfrac{1}{\sqrt{c+H^2}})$. Here $H$ is the norm of the parallel mean curvature of $M$, and $ε(n,c,λ, H)$ is a positive constant depending only on $n, c,λ$ and $H$. This extends some of the earl…
We prove that there do not exist odd-dimensional stable compact minimal immersions in the product of two complex projective spaces. We also prove that the only stable compact minimal immersions in the product of a quaternionic projective space with any other Riemannian manifold are the products of quaternionic projective subspaces with compact stable minimal immersions of the second manifold in the Riemmanian product. These generalize similar results of the second-named author of immersions with low dimensions or codimensions to immersions with arbitrary dimensions. In addition, we prove that …
We show that Lagrangian submanifolds in six-dimensional nearly Kähler (non Kähler) manifolds and in twistor spaces $Z\sp{4n+2}$ over quaternionic Kähler manifolds $Q\sp{4n}$ are minimal. Moreover, we will prove that any Lagrangian submanifold $L$ in a nearly Kähler manifold $M$ splits into a product of two Lagrangian submanifolds for which one factor is Lagrangian in the strict nearly Kähler part of $M$ and the second factor is Lagrangian in the Kähler part of $M$. Using this splitting theorem we then describe Lagrangian submanifolds in nearly Kähler manifolds of dimensions six, eight and ten.
We find many examples of compact Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ whose closed minimal hypersurfaces satisfy a lower bound on their index that is linear in their first Betti number. Moreover, we show that these bounds remain valid when the metric $g$ is replaced with $g'$ in a neighbourhood of $g$. Our examples $(M,g)$ consist of certain minimal isoparametric hypersurfaces of spheres; their focal manifolds; the Lie groups $SU(n)$ for $n\leq 17$, and $Sp(n)$ for all $n$; and all quaternionic Grassmannians.
A theorem of Lawson and Simons states that the only stable minimal submanifolds in complex projective spaces are complex submanifolds. We generalize their result to the cases of quaternionic and octonionic projective spaces. Our approach gives a unified viewpoint towards conformal and projective geometries.
We show the total space of the canonical line bundle $\mathbb{L}$ of a Kahler-Einstein manifold $X^n$ supports integrable $SU(n+1)$ structures, or Calabi-Yau structures. The canonical real line bundle $L \subset \mathbb{L}$ over a minimal Lagrangian submanifold $M \subset X$ is calibrated in this setting and hence can be considered as the special Lagrangian lift of $M$. For the integrable $G_2$ and $Spin(7)$ structures on spin bundles and bundles of anti-self-dual 2-forms on self-dual Einstein 4-manifolds constructed by Bryant and Salamon, minimal surfaces with vanishing complex quartic form (…
Every compact 3-Sasakian 7-manifold $M$ admits a canonical 2-parameter family of co-closed $\text{G}_2$-structures $φ_{a,b}$ for $a,b > 0$, as well as a foliation by $φ_{a,b}$-associative 3-folds whose leaf space $X$ is a positive quaternion-Kähler 4-orbifold. We prove that associative 3-folds in $(M,φ_{a,b})$ that are ruled by a certain type of geodesic are in correspondence with pseudo-holomorphic curves in the almost-complex 8-manifold $Z \times S^2$, where $Z$ is the twistor space of $X$ equipped with its strict nearly-Kähler structure. As an application, we construct infinitely many topol…
We establish inequalities for the eigenvalues of Schrödinger operators on compact submanifolds (possibly with nonempty boundary) of Euclidean spaces, of spheres, and of real, complex and quaternionic projective spaces, which are related to inequalities for the Laplacian on Euclidean domains due to Payne, Pólya, and Weinberger and to Yang, but which depend in an explicit way on the mean curvature. In later sections, we prove similar results for Schrödinger operators on homogeneous Riemannian spaces and, more generally, on any Riemannian manifold that admits an eigenmap into a sphere, as well as…
