We consider solutions in frequency bands of dispersive equations on the line defined by Fourier multipliers, these solutions being considered as wave packets. In this paper, a refinement of an existing method permitting to expand time-asymptotically the solution formulas is proposed, leading to a first term inheriting the mean position of the true solution together with a constant variance error. In particular, this first term is supported in a space-time cone whose origin position depends explicitly on the initial state, implying especially a shifted time-decay rate. This method, which takes into account both spatial and frequency information of the initial state, makes then stable some propagation features and permits a better description of the motion and the dispersion of the solutions of interest. The results are achieved firstly by making apparent the cone origin in the solution formula, secondly by applying precisely an adapted version of the stationary phase method with a new error bound, and finally by minimizing the error bound with respect to the cone origin.
In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the scalar non-viscous diffusive dispersive conservation laws where the far field states are prescribed. We proved that the solution of the Cauchy problem tends toward the constant state as time goes to infinity.
We consider semilinear hyperbolic systems with a trilinear nonlinearity. Both the differential equation and the initial data contain the inverse of a small parameter $\varepsilon$, and typical solutions oscillate with frequency proportional to $1/\varepsilon$ in time and space. Moreover, solutions have to be computed on time intervals of length $1/\varepsilon$ in order to study nonlinear and diffractive effects. As a consequence, direct numerical simulations are extremely costly or even impossible. We propose an analytical approximation and prove that it approximates the exact solution up to a…
In this paper we study some properties of propagation of regularity of solutions of the dispersive generalized Benjamin-Ono (BO) equation. This model defines a family of dispersive equations, that can be seen as a dispersive interpolation between Benjamin-Ono equation and Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. Recently, it has been showed that solutions of the KdV equation and Benjamin-Ono equation, satisfy the following property: if the initial data has some prescribed regularity on the right hand side of the real line, then this regularity is propagated with infinite speed by the flow solution. I…
The aim of this article is to extend previous works about the asymptotics of an ill-prepared fast rotating, highly stratified incompressible Navier-Stokes system. Thanks to improved Strichartz estimates, we are able not only to cover a case which was unanswered in our previous work (allowing bigger ill-prepared initial data) but also to reduce some assumptions on the initial data. In passing we also widen the range of some parameters and compare two methods to obtain dispersive estimates.
We analyze the stability of Maxwell equations in bounded domains taking into account electric and magnetization effects. Well-posedness of the model is obtained by means of semigroup theory. A passitivity assumption guarantees the boundedness of the associated semigroup. Further the exponential or polynomial decay of the energy is proved under suitable sufficient conditions. Finally, several illustrative examples are presented.
In this short note, we review recent results concerning the long time dynamics of large data solutions to several dispersive models. Starting with the KdV case and ending with the KP models, we review the literature and present new results where virial estimates allow one to prove local energy decay in different regions of space where solitons, lumps or solitary waves are not present.
Estimates of oscillatory integrals with stationary phase and singular amplitude: Applications to propagation features for dispersive equations
In this article we prove highly improved and flexible Strichartz-type estimates allowing us to generalize the asymptotics we obtained for a stratified and rotating incompressible Navier-Stokes system: for large (and less regular) initial data, we obtain global well-posedness, asymptotics (as the Rossby number $ε$ goes to zero) and convergence rates as a power of the small parameter $ε$. Our approach is lead by the special structure of the limit system: the 3D quasi-geostrophic system.
We consider the initial value problem (IVP) for the fractional Korteweg-de Vries equation (fKdV) \begin{equation}\label{abstracteq1} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} \partial_{t}u-D_{x}^α\partial_{x}u+u\partial_{x}u=0, & x,t\in\mathbb{R},\,0<α<1, \\ u(x,0)=u_{0}(x).& \\ \end{array} \right. \end{equation} It has been shown that the solutions to certain dispersive equations satisfy the propagation of regularity phenomena. More precisely, it deals in determine whether regularity of the initial data on the right hand side of the real line is propagated to the left hand side by the flow solution. This pro…
This work aims to study some smoothness properties concerning the initial value problem associated to the dispersive generalized Benjamin-Ono-Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation. More precisely, we prove that the solutions to this model satisfy the so-called propagation of regularity. Roughly speaking, this principle states that if the initial data enjoys some extra smoothness prescribed on a family of half-spaces, then the regularity is propagated with infinite speed. In this sense, we prove that regardless of the scale measuring the extra regularity in such hyperplane collection, then all this regul…
We revisit the proof of Landau damping near stable homogenous equilibria of Vlasov-Poisson systems with screened interactions in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ (for $d\geq3$) that was first established by Bedrossian, Masmoudi and Mouhot. Our proof follows a Lagrangian approach and relies on precise pointwise in time dispersive estimates in the physical space for the linearized problem that should be of independent interest. This allows to cut down the smoothness of the initial data required in Bedrossian at al. (roughly, we only need Lipschitz regularity). Moreover, the time decay estimates we…
Abstract. The purpose of this paper is twofold. We introduce the theory of random tensors, which naturally extends the method of random averaging operators in our earlier work arXiv:1910.08492, to study the propagation of randomness under nonlinear dispersive equations. By applying this theory we also solve Conjecture 1.7 in arXiv:1910.08492, and establish almost-sure local well-posedness for semilinear Schrödinger equations in spaces that are subcritical in the probabilistic scaling. The solution we find has an explicit expansion in terms of multilinear Gaussians with adapted random tensor co…
We show that for any uniformly bounded in time $H^1\cap L^1$ solution of the dispersive generalized Benjamin-Ono equation, the limit infimum, as time $t$ goes to infinity, converges to zero locally in an increasing-in-time region of space of order $t/\log t$. This result is in accordance with the one established by Muñoz and Ponce \cite{MP1} for solutions of the Benjamin-Ono equation. Similar to solutions of the Benjamin-Ono equation, for a solution of the dispersive generalized Benjamin-Ono equation, with a mild $L^1$-norm growth in time, its limit infimum must converge to zero, as time goes …
A multispecies, collisionless plasma is modeled by the Vlasov-Poisson system. Assuming that the electric field decays with sufficient rapidity as $t \to\infty$, we show that the velocity characteristics and spatial averages of the particle distributions converge as time grows large. Using these limits we establish the precise asymptotic profile of the electric field and its derivatives, as well as, the charge and current densities. Modified spatial characteristics are then shown to converge using the limiting electric field. Finally, we establish a modified $L^\infty$ scattering result for eac…
In this work, we consider the long-time asymptotics for the Cauchy problem of a fourth-order dispersive nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero boundary conditions at infinity. Firstly, in order to construct the basic Riemann-Hilbert problem associated with nonzero boundary conditions, we analysis direct scattering problem. Then we deform the corresponding matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem to explicitly solving models via using the nonlinear steepest descent method and employing the $g$-function mechanism to eliminate the exponential growths of the jump matrices. Finally, we obtain the asympt…

We prove a long time existence result for the solutions of a two-dimensional Boussinesq system modeling the propagation of long, weakly nonlinear water waves. This system is exceptional in the sense that it is the only linearly well-posed system in the (abcd) family of Boussinesq systems whose eigenvalues of the linearized system have nontrivial zeroes. This new difficulty is solved by the use of "good unknowns " and of normal form techniques.
In this work, we employ the $\bar{\partial}$-steepset descent method to study the Cauchy problem of the coupled dispersive AB system with initial conditions in weighted Sobolev space $H^{1,1}(\mathbb{R})$, \begin{align*} \left\{\begin{aligned} &A_{xt}-αA-βAB=0,\\ &B_{x}+\fracγ{2}(|A|^2)_t=0,\\ &A(x,0)=A_0(x),~~~~B(x,0)=B_0(x)\in H^{1,1}(\mathbb{R}). \end{aligned}\right. \end{align*} Begin with the Lax pair of the coupled dispersive AB system, we successfully derive the solutions of the coupled dispersive AB system by constructing the basic Riemann-Hilbert problem. By using the $\bar{\partial}$…
In this paper, we mainly investigate the long-time asymptotic behavior of the solution for the coupled dispersive AB system with weighted Sobolev initial data, which allows soliton solutions via the Dbar steepest descent method.Based on the spectral analysis of Lax pair, the Cauchy problem of the coupled dispersive AB system is transformed into a Riemann-Hilbert problem, and its existence and uniqueness of the solution is proved by the vanishing lemma. The stationary phase points play an important role in the long-time asymptotic behavior. We demonstrate that in any fixed time cone $\mathcal{C…
The local and global control results for a general higher-order KdV-type operator posed on the unit circle are presented. Using spectral analysis, we are able to prove local results, that is, the equation is locally controllable and exponentially stable. To extend the local results to the global one we captured the smoothing properties of the Bourgain spaces, the so-called propagation of singularities, which are proved with a new perspective. These propagation, together with the Strichartz estimates, are the key to extending the local control properties to the global one, precisely, higher-ord…
A novel approach to critical-contrast homogenisation for periodic PDEs is proposed, via an explicit asymptotic analysis of Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators. Norm-resolvent asymptotics for non-uniformly elliptic problems with highly oscillating coefficients are explicitly constructed. An essential feature of the new technique is that it relates homogenisation limits to a class of time-dispersive media.
We study the dispersive properties of a linear equation in one spatial dimension which is inspired by models in peridynamics. The interplay between nonlocality and dispersion is analyzed in detail through the study of the asymptotics at low and high frequencies, revealing new features ruling the wave propagation in continua where nonlocal characteristics must be taken into account. Global dispersive estimates and existence of conserved functionals are proved. A comparison between these new effects and the classical local {\it scenario} is deepened also through a numerical analysis.
We consider transverse propagation of electromagnetic waves through a two-dimensional composite material containing a periodic rectangular array of circular cylinders. Propagation of waves is described by the Helmholtz equation with the continuity conditions the tangential components of the electric and magnetic fields on the boundaries of the cylinders. We assume that the dimensionless wave frequency $ν\ll 1$ that allows us to view the governing equation as a perturbation of the Laplace equation. We show that the eigenfunctions and the eigenvalues are even analytic functions of the magnitude …
We extend the monumental result of Christodoulou-Klainerman on the global nonlinear stability of the Minkowski spacetime to the global nonlinear stability of a class of large dispersive spacetimes. More precisely, we show that any regular future causally geodesically complete, asymptotically flat solution to the Einstein-scalar field system which approaches the Minkowski spacetime sufficiently fast for large times is future globally nonlinearly stable. Combining our main theorem with results of Luk-Oh, Luk-Oh-Yang and Kilgore, we prove that a class of large data spherically symmetric dispersiv…
Designing devices composed of many small resonators is a challenging problem that can easily incur significant computational cost. Can asymptotic techniques be used to overcome this often limiting factor? Integral methods and asymptotic techniques have been used to derive concise characterisations for scattering by resonators, but can these be generalised to systems of many dispersive resonators whose material parameters have highly non-linear frequency dependence? In this paper, we study halide perovskite resonators as a demonstrative example. We extend previous work to show how a finite numb…
