Abstract. The purpose of this paper is twofold. We introduce the theory of random tensors, which naturally extends the method of random averaging operators in our earlier work arXiv:1910.08492, to study the propagation of randomness under nonlinear dispersive equations. By applying this theory we also solve Conjecture 1.7 in arXiv:1910.08492, and establish almost-sure local well-posedness for semilinear Schrödinger equations in spaces that are subcritical in the probabilistic scaling. The solution we find has an explicit expansion in terms of multilinear Gaussians with adapted random tensor coefficients.
In the random setting, the probabilistic scaling is the natural scaling for dispersive equations, and is different from the natural scaling for parabolic equations. Our theory, which covers the full subcritical regime in the probabilistic scaling, can be viewed as the dispersive counterpart of the existing parabolic theories (regularity structure, para-controlled calculus and renormalization group techniques).
We establish the well-posedness, the finite speed propagation, and a regularity result for Maxwell's equations in media consisting of dispersive (frequency dependent) metamaterials. Two typical examples for such metamaterials are materials obeying Drude's and Lorentz' models. The causality and the passivity are the two main assumptions and play a crucial role in the analysis. It is worth noting that by contrast the well-posedness in the frequency domain is not ensured in general. We also provide some numerical experiments using the Drude's model to illustrate its dispersive behaviour.
We study several basic dispersive models with random periodic initial data such that the different Fourier modes are independent random variables. Motivated by the vast Physics literature on related topics, we then study how much the Fourier modes of the solution at later times remain decorrelated. Our results are sensitive to the resonances associated with the dispersive relation and to the particular choice of the initial data.
This paper considers the initial value problem for a class of fifth order dispersive models containing the fifth order KdV equation $$\partial_tu - \partial_x^5u - 30u^2\partial_xu + 20\partial_xu\partial_x^2u + 10u\partial_x^3u = 0.$$ The main results show that regularity or polynomial decay of the data on the positive half-line yields regularity in the solution for positive times.
We propose some modification of Maxwell's equations describing mediums which electric and magnetic properties are changed essentially after interaction with outer electromagnetic field. We show for such mediums that electromagnetic waves have finite speed of propagations property for some time depending on initial energy of electromagnetic field and nonlinear parameters of the problem which are responsible for properties of medium.
We study the dispersive properties of a linear equation in one spatial dimension which is inspired by models in peridynamics. The interplay between nonlocality and dispersion is analyzed in detail through the study of the asymptotics at low and high frequencies, revealing new features ruling the wave propagation in continua where nonlocal characteristics must be taken into account. Global dispersive estimates and existence of conserved functionals are proved. A comparison between these new effects and the classical local {\it scenario} is deepened also through a numerical analysis.

We consider semilinear hyperbolic systems with a trilinear nonlinearity. Both the differential equation and the initial data contain the inverse of a small parameter $\varepsilon$, and typical solutions oscillate with frequency proportional to $1/\varepsilon$ in time and space. Moreover, solutions have to be computed on time intervals of length $1/\varepsilon$ in order to study nonlinear and diffractive effects. As a consequence, direct numerical simulations are extremely costly or even impossible. We propose an analytical approximation and prove that it approximates the exact solution up to a…
We consider solutions in frequency bands of dispersive equations on the line defined by Fourier multipliers, these solutions being considered as wave packets. In this paper, a refinement of an existing method permitting to expand time-asymptotically the solution formulas is proposed, leading to a first term inheriting the mean position of the true solution together with a constant variance error. In particular, this first term is supported in a space-time cone whose origin position depends explicitly on the initial state, implying especially a shifted time-decay rate. This method, which takes …
In this paper we study some properties of propagation of regularity of solutions of the dispersive generalized Benjamin-Ono (BO) equation. This model defines a family of dispersive equations, that can be seen as a dispersive interpolation between Benjamin-Ono equation and Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. Recently, it has been showed that solutions of the KdV equation and Benjamin-Ono equation, satisfy the following property: if the initial data has some prescribed regularity on the right hand side of the real line, then this regularity is propagated with infinite speed by the flow solution. I…
We consider transverse propagation of electromagnetic waves through a two-dimensional composite material containing a periodic rectangular array of circular cylinders. Propagation of waves is described by the Helmholtz equation with the continuity conditions the tangential components of the electric and magnetic fields on the boundaries of the cylinders. We assume that the dimensionless wave frequency $ν\ll 1$ that allows us to view the governing equation as a perturbation of the Laplace equation. We show that the eigenfunctions and the eigenvalues are even analytic functions of the magnitude …
In this paper, we study time-asymptotic propagation phenomena for a class of dispersive equations on the line by exploiting precise estimates of oscillatory integrals. We propose first an extension of the van der Corput Lemma to the case of phases which may have a stationary point of real order and amplitudes allowed to have an integrable singular point. The resulting estimates provide optimal decay rates which show explicitly the influence of these two particular points. Then we apply these abstract results to solution formulas of a class of dispersive equations on the line defined by Fourier…
We consider the initial value problem (IVP) for the fractional Korteweg-de Vries equation (fKdV) \begin{equation}\label{abstracteq1} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} \partial_{t}u-D_{x}^α\partial_{x}u+u\partial_{x}u=0, & x,t\in\mathbb{R},\,0<α<1, \\ u(x,0)=u_{0}(x).& \\ \end{array} \right. \end{equation} It has been shown that the solutions to certain dispersive equations satisfy the propagation of regularity phenomena. More precisely, it deals in determine whether regularity of the initial data on the right hand side of the real line is propagated to the left hand side by the flow solution. This pro…
This work aims to study some smoothness properties concerning the initial value problem associated to the dispersive generalized Benjamin-Ono-Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation. More precisely, we prove that the solutions to this model satisfy the so-called propagation of regularity. Roughly speaking, this principle states that if the initial data enjoys some extra smoothness prescribed on a family of half-spaces, then the regularity is propagated with infinite speed. In this sense, we prove that regardless of the scale measuring the extra regularity in such hyperplane collection, then all this regul…
The local and global control results for a general higher-order KdV-type operator posed on the unit circle are presented. Using spectral analysis, we are able to prove local results, that is, the equation is locally controllable and exponentially stable. To extend the local results to the global one we captured the smoothing properties of the Bourgain spaces, the so-called propagation of singularities, which are proved with a new perspective. These propagation, together with the Strichartz estimates, are the key to extending the local control properties to the global one, precisely, higher-ord…
We establish space-time dispersive estimates for solutions to the wave equation on compact Riemannian manifolds with bounded sectional curvature, with the same exponents as for $C^\infty$ metrics. The estimates are for bounded time intervals, so by finite propagation velocity the results apply also on non-compact manifolds under appropriate uniform conditions. We assume a priori that in local coordinates the metric tensor components satisfy ${\rm g}_{ij}\in W^{1,p}$ for some $p>d$, which ensures that the curvature tensor is well defined in the weak sense, but this can be relaxed to any assumpt…
This study deals with the analysis of the Cauchy problem of a general class of nonlocal nonlinear equations modeling the bi-directional propagation of dispersive waves in various contexts. The nonlocal nature of the problem is reflected by two different elliptic pseudodifferential operators acting on linear and nonlinear functions of the dependent variable, respectively. The well-known doubly dispersive nonlinear wave equation that incorporates two types of dispersive effects originated from two different dispersion operators falls into the category studied here. The class of nonlocal nonlinea…
In this paper we consider the nonlinear dispersive wave equation on the real line, $u_t-u_{txx}+[f(u)]_x-[f(u)]_{xxx}+\bigl[g(u)+\frac{f''(u)}{2}u_x^2\bigr]_x=0$, that for appropriate choices of the functions $f$ and $g$ includes well known models, such as Dai's equation for the study of vibrations inside elastic rods or the Camassa--Holm equation modelling water wave propagation in shallow water. We establish a local-in-space blowup criterion (i.e., a criterion involving only the properties of the data $u_0$ in a neighbourhood of a single point) simplifying and extending earlier blowup criter…
In recent years two nonlinear dispersive partial differential equations have attracted a lot of attention due to their integrable structure. We prove that both equations arise in the modeling of the propagation of shallow water waves over a flat bed. The equations capture stronger nonlinear effects than the classical nonlinear dispersive Benjamin-Bona-Mahoney and Korteweg-de Vries equations. In particular, they accomodate wave breaking phenomena.
The KdV equation models the propagation of long waves in dispersive media, while the NLS equation models the dynamics of narrow-bandwidth wave packets consisting of short dispersive waves. A system that couples the two equations to model the interaction of long and short waves seems attractive and such a system has been studied over the last decades. We evaluate the validity of this system, discussing two main problems. First, only the system coupling the linear Schrödinger equation with KdV has been derived in the literature. Second, the time variables appearing in the equations are of a diff…
