We present the necessary and sufficient condition for the $L^2$-well-posedness of the initial problem for a third order linear dispersive equation on the two dimensional torus. Birkhoff's method of asymptotic solutions is used to prove the necessity. Some properties of a system for quadratic algebraic equations associated to the principal symbol play crucial role in proving the sufficiency.
We present the necessary and sufficient conditions of the well-posedness of the initial value problem for certain fourth-order linear dispersive systems on the one-dimensional torus. This system is related with a dispersive flow for closed curves into compact Riemann surfaces. For this reason, we study not only the general case but also the corresponding special case in detail. We apply our results on the linear systems to the fourth-order dispersive flows. We see that if the sectional curvature of the target Riemann surface is constant, then the equation of the dispersive flow satisfies our c…
The moment method is used to prove the exact controllability of a wide class of bidimensional linear dispersive PDE's posed on the two-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^{2}.$ The control function is considered to be acting on a small vertical and horizontal strip of the torus. Our results apply to several well-known models including some bidimesional extensions of the Benajamin-Ono and Korteweg-de Vries equations. As a by product, the exponential stabilizability with any given decay rate is also established in $H^{s}_{p}(\mathbb{T}^{2}),$ with $s\geq 0,$ by constructing an appropriated feedback co…
We present local existence theorem of the initial value problem for third order semilinear dispersive partial differential equations in two space dimensions. This type of equations arises in the study of gravity wave of deep water, and cannot be solved by the classical energy method. To solve the initial value problem, we make full use of pseudodifferential operators with nonsmooth coefficients.
We use exponential sums to study the fractal dimension of the graphs of solutions to linear dispersive PDE. Our techniques apply to Schrödinger, Airy, Boussinesq, the fractional Schrödinger, and the gravity and gravity-capillary water wave equations. We also discuss applications to certain nonlinear dispersive equations. In particular, we obtain bounds for the dimension of the graph of the solution to cubic nonlinear Schrödinger and Korteweg-de Vries equations along oblique lines in space-time.
We consider the Cauchy problem of fifth order dispersive equations on the torus. We assume that the initial data is sufficiently smooth and the nonlinear term is a polynomial depending on $\partial_x^3 u, \partial_x^2 u, \partial_x u$ and $u$. We prove that the local well-posedness holds on $[-T,T]$ when the nonlinear term satisfies a condition and otherwise, the local well-posedness holds with a smoothing effect only on either $[0,T]$ or $[-T,0]$ and nonexistence result holds on the other time interval, which means that the nonlinear term can not be treated as a perturbation of the linear par…
This paper is devoted to studying the initial value problem for a third-order dispersive equation for closed curves into Kähler manifolds. This equation is a geometric generalization of a two-sphere valued system modeling the motion of vortex filament. We prove the local existence theorem by using geometric analysis and classical energy method.
We prove global existence of solutions to the initial value problem for a third order dispersive flow into compact locally Hermitian symmetric spaces. The equation we consider generalizes two-sphere-valued completely integrable systems modelling the motion of vortex filament. Unlike one-dimensional Schrödinger maps, our third order equation is not completely integrable under the curvature condition on the target manifold in general. The idea of our proof is to exploit two conservation laws and an energy which is not necessarily preserved in time but does not blow up in finite time.
We present a time-local existence theorem of the initial value problem for a third-order dispersive evolution equation for open curves on compact almost Hermitian manifolds arising in the geometric analysis of vortex filaments. This equation causes the so-called loss of one-derivative since the target manifold is not supposed to be a Kähler manifold. We overcome this difficulty by using a gauge transformation of a multiplier on the pull-back bundle to eliminate the bad first order terms essentially.
We discuss a short-time existence theorem of solutions to the initial value problem for a third order dispersive flow for closed curves into a compact almost Hermitian manifold. Our equations geometrically generalize a physical model describing the motion of vortex filament. The classical energy method cannot work for this problem since the almost complex structure of the target manifold is not supposed to be parallel with respect to the Levi-Civita connection. In other words, a loss of one derivative arises from the covariant derivative of the almost complex structure. To overcome this diffic…
We consider the Cauchy problem of third order Benjamin-Ono type equations on the torus. Nonlinear terms may yield derivative losses, which prevents us from using the classical energy method. In order to overcome that difficulty, we add a correction term into the energy. We also use the Bona-Smith type argument to show the continuous dependence.
We study the initial value problem of fully nonlinear third-order equations on the torus. Under some conditions on the nonlinearity and the data, we prove that the equation behaves like a parabolic one: there exists a unique local solution in one direction of time that is infinitely smooth and the problem in not well-posed in the other direction. Under other conditions on the nonlinearity and the data, we prove that the equation behaves like a dispersive one: there exists a unique local solution in both directions of time.
We consider the third order Benjamin-Ono equation on the torus $\partial_t u= \partial_x \left( -\partial_{xx}u-\frac{3}{2}u H\partial_x u - \frac{3}{2}H(u\partial_x u) + u^3 \right).$ We prove that for any $t\in\mathbb{R}$, the flow map continuously extends to $H^s_{r,0}(\mathbb{T})$ if $s\geq 0$, but does not admit a continuous extension to $H^{-s}_{r,0}(\mathbb{T})$ if $0<s<\frac{1}{2}$. Moreover, we show that the extension is not weakly sequentially continuous in $L^2_{r,0}(\mathbb{T})$. We then classify the traveling wave solutions for the third order Benjamin-Ono equation in $L^2_{r,0}(\…
We prove dispersive estimates for linear Schroedinger equations in two space dimensions. The potential is assumed to be real-valued with some polynomial decay (faster than a negative third power), and zero energy is assumed to be a regular point for the perturbed resolvent.
In this paper we study fractal solutions of linear and nonlinear dispersive PDE on the torus. In the first part we answer some open questions on the fractal solutions of linear Schrödinger equation and equations with higher order dispersion. We also discuss applications to their nonlinear counterparts like the cubic Schrödinger equation (NLS) and the Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV). In the second part, we study fractal solutions of the vortex filament equation and the associated Schrödinger map equation (SM). In particular, we construct global strong solutions of the SM in $H^s$ for $s>\frac3…
We analyze a homogenization limit for the linear wave equation of second order. The spatial operator is assumed to be of divergence form with an oscillatory coefficient matrix $a^\varepsilon$ that is periodic with characteristic length scale $\varepsilon$; no spatial symmetry properties are imposed. Classical homogenization theory allows to describe solutions $u^\varepsilon$ well by a non-dispersive wave equation on fixed time intervals $(0,T)$. Instead, when larger time intervals are considered, dispersive effects are observed. In this contribution we present a well-posed weakly dispersive eq…
We consider a linear second order parabolic system with a third order dispersion term. This type of system arises when considering a nonlinear model equation describing the motion of a vortex filament with axial flow immersed in an incompressible and inviscid fluid. We prove the solvability of an initial-boundary value problem of the parabolic-dispersive system which allows application to the motion of a vortex filament. To do so, we propose a new regularization technique by adding a space-time derivative term.
We consider the $L^2$ well-posedness of third order Benjamin-Ono equation. We show that by means of a normal form and a gauge transformation, the equation can be changed into an Airy-type equation. A second goal of this work is to establish that the solutions to the nonlinear third order Benjamin-Ono equation problem exhibit a dispersive decay estimate analogue to the corresponding linear associated problem. The key ingredient is the use of a nonlinear vector field method.
In this short paper, we elucidate how the solution of certain illustrative boundary value problems for the Airy equation $u_t+u_{xxx}=0$ on $[0,1]$ can be expressed as a perturbation of the solution of the purely periodic problem. The motivation is to understand the role boundary conditions play in the properties of the solution. This is particularly important in related work on the solution of linear dispersive problems with discontinuous initial data and the phenomena of revivals and fractalization.
We derive a $L^1_x (\mathbb R^d)-L^{\infty}_x ( \mathbb R^d)$ decay estimate of order $\mathcal O \left( t^{-d/2}\right)$ for the linear propagators $$\exp \left( {\pm it \sqrt{ |D|\left(1+ β|D|^2\right) \tanh |D | } }\right), \qquad β\in \{0, 1\}. \quad D = -i\nabla,$$ with a loss of $3d/4$ or $d/4$-derivatives in the case $β=0$ or $β=1$, respectively. These linear propagators are known to be associated with the linearized water wave equations, where the parameter $β$ measures surface tension effects. As an application we prove low regularity well-posedness for a Whitham-Boussinesq type syste…
In this article we prove local well-posedness of quasilinear dispersive systems of PDE generalizing KdV. These results adapt the ideas of Kenig- Ponce-Vega from the Quasi-Linear Schrödinger equations to the third order dispersive problems. The main ingredient of the proof is a local smoothing estimate for a general linear problem that allows us to proceed via the artificial viscosity method.
Given a first-order nonlinear hyperbolic system of conservation laws endowed with a convex entropy-entropy flux pair, we can consider the class of weak solutions containing shock waves depending upon some small scale parameters. In this Note, we define and derive several classes of entropy-dissipating augmented models, as we call them, which involve (possibly nonlinear) second- and third-order augmentation terms. Such terms typically arise in continuum physics and model the viscosity and capillarity effects in a fluid, for instance. By introducing a new notion of positive entropy production th…
We consider the ill-posedness and well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the third order NLS equation with Raman scattering term on the one dimensional torus. It is regarded as a mathematical model for the photonic crystal fiber oscillator. Regarding the ill-posedness, we show the nonexistence of solutions in the Sobolev space and the norm inflation of the data-solution map under slightly different conditions, respectively. We also prove the local unique existence of solutions in the analytic function space.
We consider a nonlinear third order dispersive equation which models the motion of a vortex filament immersed in an incompressible and inviscid fluid occupying the three dimensional half space. We prove the unique solvability of initial-boundary value problems as an attempt to analyze the motion of a tornado.
Given three transversal and sufficiently regular hypersurfaces in R^3 it follows from work of Bennett-Carbery-Wright that the convolution of two L^2 functions supported of the first and second hypersurface, respectively, can be restricted to an L^2 function on the third hypersurface, which can be considered as a nonlinear version of the Loomis-Whitney inequality. We generalize this result to a class of C^{1,beta} hypersurfaces in R^3, under scaleable assumptions. The resulting uniform L^2 estimate has applications to nonlinear dispersive equations.
We examine a degenerate, dispersive, nonlinear wave equation related to the evolution of partially molten rock in dimensions two and higher. This simplified model, for a scalar field capturing the melt fraction by volume, has been studied by direct numerical simulation where it has been observed to develop stable solitary waves. In this work, we prove local in time well-posedness results for the time dependent equation, on both the whole space and the torus, for dimensions two and higher. We also prove the existence of the solitary wave solutions in dimensions two and higher.
The main objective of this paper is understanding the propagation laws obeyed by high-frequency limits of Wigner distributions associated to solutions to the Schroedinger equation on the standard d-dimensional torus T^{d}. From the point of view of semiclassical analysis, our setting corresponds to performing the semiclassical limit at times of order 1/h, as the characteristic wave-length h of the initial data tends to zero. It turns out that, in spite that for fixed h every Wigner distribution satisfies a Liouville equation, their limits are no longer uniquely determined by those of the Wigne…
This paper is devoted to the study of large time bounds for the Sobolev norms of the solutions of the following fractional cubic Schr{ö}dinger equation on the torus :$$i \partial\_t u = |D|^αu+|u|^2 u, \quad u(0, \cdot)=u\_0,$$where $α$ is a real parameter. We show that, apart from the case $α= 1$, which corresponds to a half-wave equation with no dispersive property at all, solutions of this equation grow at a polynomial rate at most. We also address the case of the cubic and quadratic half-wave equations.
We look at the long-time behaviour of solutions to a semi-classical Schrödinger equation on the torus. We consider time scales which go to infinity when the semi-classical parameter goes to zero and we associate with each time-scale the set of semi-classical measures associated with all possible choices of initial data. On each classical invariant torus, the structure of semi-classical measures is described in terms of two-microlocal measures, obeying explicit propagation laws. We apply this construction in two directions. We first analyse the regularity of semi-classical measures, and we emph…

We study the large time behaviour of the solution of a linear dispersive PDEs posed on a finite interval, when the prescribed boundary conditions are time periodic. We use the approach pioneered in Fokas & Lenells 2012 for nonlinear integrable PDEs. and then applied to linear problems on the half-line in Fokas & van der Weele 2021, to characterise necessary conditions for the solution of such a problem to be periodic, at least in an asymptotic sense. We then fully describe the periodicity properties of the solution in three important illustrative examples, recovering known results for the seco…
