Let $\mathcal{G}_k$ be the gauge group of the principal $SU(4)$-bundle over $S^4$ with second Chern class $k$ and let $p$ be a prime. We show that there is a rational or $p$-local homotopy equivalence $Ω\mathcal{G}_k\simeqΩ\mathcal{G}_{k'}$ if and only if $(60,k)=(60,k')$.
We determine the number of distinct fibre homotopy types for the gauge groups of principal $Sp(2)$-bundles over a closed, simply-connected four-manifold.
We analyse the homotopy types of gauge groups of principal U(n)-bundles associated to pseudo Real vector bundles in the sense of Atiyah. We provide satisfactory homotopy decompositions of these gauge groups into factors in which the homotopy groups are well known. Therefore, we substantially build upon the low dimensional homotopy groups as provided in a paper by I. Biswas, J. Huisman, and J. Hurtubise.
Both the gauge groups and $5$-manifolds are important in physics and mathematics. In this paper, we combine them together to study the homotopy aspects of gauge groups over $5$-manifolds. For principal bundles over non-simply connected oriented closed $5$-manifolds of certain type, we prove various homotopy decompositions of their gauge groups according to different geometric structures on the manifolds, and give partial solution to the classification of the gauge groups. As applications, we estimate the homotopy exponents of their gauge groups, and show periodicity results of the homotopy gro…
The $p$-local homotopy types of gauge groups of principal $G$-bundles over $S^4$ are classified when $G$ is a compact connected exceptional Lie group without $p$-torsion in homology except for $(G,p)=(\mathrm{E}_7,5)$.
Let $M$ be an orientable, simply-connected, closed, non-spin 4-manifold and let $\mathcal{G}_k(M)$ be the gauge group of the principal $G$-bundle over $M$ with second Chern class $k\in\mathbb{Z}$. It is known that the homotopy type of $\mathcal{G}_k(M)$ is determined by the homotopy type of $\mathcal{G}_k(\mathbb{CP}^2)$. In this paper we investigate properties of $\mathcal{G}_k(\mathbb{CP}^2)$ when $G = SU(n)$ that partly classify the homotopy types of the gauge groups.
The first aim of this paper is to study the $p$-local higher homotopy commutativity of Lie groups in the sense of Sugawara. The second aim is to apply this result to the $p$-local higher homotopy commutativity of gauge groups. Although the higher homotopy commutativity of Lie groups in the sense of Williams is already known, the higher homotopy commutativity in the sense of Sugawara is necessary for this application. The third aim is to resolve the $5$-local higher homotopy non-commutativity problem of the exceptional Lie group $\mathrm{G}_2$, which has been open for a long time.
Let $\mathcal{G}_{k,n}$ be the gauge group of the principal $\mathrm{Sp}(n)$-bundle over $S^4$ corresponding to $k\in\mathbb{Z}\congπ_3(\mathrm{Sp}(n))$. We refine the result of Sutherland on the homotopy types of $\mathcal{G}_{k,n}$ and relate it with the order of a certain Samelson product in $\mathrm{Sp}(n)$. Then we classify the $p$-local homotopy types of $\mathcal{G}_{k,n}$ for $(p-1)^2+1\ge 2n$.
The gauge group of a principal $G$-bundle $P$ over a space $X$ is the group of $G$-equivariant homeomorphisms of $P$ that cover the identity on $X$. We consider the gauge groups of bundles over $S^4$ with $\mathrm{Spin}^c(n)$, the complex spin group, as structure group and show how the study of their homotopy types reduces to that of $\mathrm{Spin}(n)$-gauge groups over $S^4$. We then advance on what is known by providing a partial classification for $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$- and $\mathrm{Spin}(8)$-gauge groups over $S^4$.
Let $G$ be a simply-connected simple compact Lie group and let $M$ be an orientable smooth closed 4-manifold. In this paper we calculate the homotopy type of the suspension of $M$ and the homotopy types of the gauge groups of principal $G$-bundles over $M$ when $π_1(M)$ is: (1)~$\mathbb{Z}^{*m}$, (2)~$\mathbb{Z}/p^r\mathbb{Z}$, or (3)~$\mathbb{Z}^{*m}*(*^n_{j=1}\mathbb{Z}/p_j^{r_j}\mathbb{Z})$, where $p$ and the $p_j$'s are odd primes.
Let $M_{l,m}$ be the total space of the $S^3$-bundle over $S^4$ classified by the element $lσ+mρ\in{π_4(SO(4))}$, $l,m\in\mathbb Z$. In this paper we study the homotopy theory of gauge groups of principal $G$-bundles over manifolds $M_{l,m}$ when $G$ is a simply connected simple compact Lie group such that $π_6(G)=0$. That is, $G$ is one of the following groups: $SU(n)$ $(n\geq4)$, $Sp(n)$ $(n\geq2)$, $Spin(n)$ $(n\geq5)$, $F_4$, $E_6$, $E_7$, $E_8$. If the integral homology of $M_{l,m}$ is torsion-free, we describe the homotopy type of the gauge groups over $M_{l,m}$ as products of recognisab…
We construct the homotopy pullback of $A_n$-spaces and show some universal property of it. As the first application, we review the Zabrodsky's result which states that for each prime $p$, there is a finite CW complex which admits an $A_{p-1}$-form but no $A_p$-form. As the second application, we investigate $A_n$-types of gauge groups. In particular, we give a new result on $A_n$-types of the gauge groups of principal $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-bundles over $S^4$, which is a complete classification when they are localized away from 2.
We examine the relation between the gauge groups of $\mathrm{SU}(n)$- and $\mathrm{PU}(n)$-bundles over $S^{2i}$, with $2\leq i\leq n$, particularly when $n$ is a prime. As special cases, for $\mathrm{PU}(5)$-bundles over $S^4$, we show that there is a rational or $p$-local equivalence $\mathcal{G}_{2,k}\simeq_{(p)}\mathcal{G}_{2,l}$ for any prime $p$ if, and only if, $(120,k)=(120,l)$, while for $\mathrm{PU}(3)$-bundles over $S^6$ there is an integral equivalence $\mathcal{G}_{3,k}\simeq\mathcal{G}_{3,l}$ if, and only if, $(120,k)=(120,l)$.
We determine the v1-periodic homotopy groups of all irreducible p-compact groups (BX,X). In the most difficult, modular, cases, we follow a direct path from their associated invariant polynomials to these homotopy groups. We show that, if p is odd, every irreducible p-compact group has X of the homotopy type of a product of explicit spaces related to p-completed Lie groups.
The homotopy theory of gauge groups has received considerable attention in recent decades. In this work, we study the homotopy theory of gauge groups over some high dimensional manifolds. To be more specific, we study gauge groups of bundles over $(n-1)$-connected closed $2n$-manifolds, the classification of which was determined by Wall and Freedman in the combinatorial category. We also investigate the gauge groups of the total manifolds of sphere bundles based on the classical work of James and Whitehead. Furthermore, other types of $2n$-manifolds are also considered. In all the cases, we sh…
A p-compact group is a mod p homotopy theoretical analogue of a compact Lie group. It is determined the homotopy nilpotency class of a p-compact group having the homotopy type of the $p$-completion of the direct product of spheres.
We give a combinatorial description of homotopy groups of $ΣK(π,1)$. In particular, all of the homotopy groups of the $3$-sphere are combinatorially given.
We compute the homotopy groups of the spaces of self maps of Lie groups of rank 2, SU(3), Sp(2), and G_2. We use the cell structures of these Lie groups and the standard methods of homotopy theory.
Lie groupoids generalize transformation groups, and so provide a natural language for studying orbifolds and other noncommutative geometries. In this paper, we investigate a connection between orbifolds and equivariant stable homotopy theory using such groupoids. A different sort of twisted sector, along with a classical theorem of tom Dieck, allows for a natural definition of stable orbifold homotopy groups, and motivates defining extended unstable orbifold homotopy groups generalizing previous definitions.
In \cite{G}, G. Lupton conjectured that the group of self-homotopy equivalences of an $F_0$-space inducing the identity on the homotopy groups is finite. Thus, the aim of this paper is to establish this conjecture.
In this paper we study the nilpotency of certain groups of self homotopy equivalences. Our main goal is to extend, to localized homotopy groups and/or homotopy groups with coefficients, the general principle of Dror and Zabrodsky by which a group of self homotopy equivalences of a finite space which acts nilpotently on the homotopy groups is itself nilpotent.
The paper is devoted to study the behavior of quasitopological homotopy groups on inverse limit spaces. More precisely, we present some conditions under which the quasitopological homotopy group of an inverse limit space and especially a product space is a topological group. Finally, we give some conditions for countability of homotopy groups.
The concept of big homotopy theory was introduced by J. Cannon and G. Conner using big intervals of arbitrarily large cardinality to detect big loops. We find, for each space, a canonical cardinal that is sufficient to detect all big loops and all big homotopies in the space.
The purpose of this note is to give a description of the stable homotopy group of some $2$-stage Postnikov systems for a range of dimensions. The considered $2$-stage Postnikov systems has the (weak) homotopy type of a generalized Eilenberg-Mac lane space, then their stable homotopy groups can be calculated by the stable homotopy groups of generalized Eilenberg-Mac lane spaces.
We obtain explicit formulas for the rational homotopy groups of generalised symmetric spaces, i.e., the homogeneous spaces for which the isotropy subgroup appears as the fixed point group of some finite order automorphism of the group. In particular, this gives explicit formulas for the rational homotopy groups of all classical compact symmetric spaces.
We compute the 3-primary v1-periodic homotopy groups of the exceptional Lie group E7. Now E8 at the primes 3 and 5 is the only compact simple Lie group whose odd-primary v1-periodic homotopy groups remian to be computed. The main work is computing the unstable Novikov spectral sequence of ΩE7/Sp(2). Showing that this converges to v1-periodic homotopy groups requires recent work of Bousfield and Bendersky-Thompson.
For each positive integer Q there exists a path connected metric compactum X such that the Qth-homotopy group of X is compactly generated but not a topological group (with the quotient topology).
Let $M$ be a topological monoid with homotopy group completion $ΩBM$. Under a strong homotopy commutativity hypothesis on $M$, we show that $π_k (ΩBM)$ is the quotient of the monoid of free homotopy classes $[S^k, M]$ by its submonoid of nullhomotopic maps. We give two applications. First, this result gives a concrete description of the Lawson homology of a complex projective variety in terms of point-wise addition of spherical families of effective algebraic cycles. Second, we apply this result to monoids built from the unitary, or general linear, representation spaces of discrete groups, lea…
In this paper we show that the nth quasitopological homotopy group of a topological space is isomorphic to (n-1)th quasitopological homotopy group of its loop space and by this fact we obtain some results about quasitopological homotopy groups. Finally, using the long exact sequence of a based pair and a fibration in qTop introduced by Brazas in 2013, we obtain some results in this field.
D. K. Biss (Topology and its Applications 124 (2002) 355-371) introduced the topological fundamental group and presented some interesting basic properties of the notion. In this article we intend to extend the above notion to homotopy groups and try to prove some similar basic properties of the topological homotopy groups. We also study more on the topology of the topological homotopy groups in order to find necessary and sufficient conditions for which the topology is discrete. Moreover, we show that studying topological homotopy groups may be more useful than topological fundamental groups.
We discuss the current state of knowledge of stable homotopy groups of spheres. We describe a new computational method that yields a streamlined computation of the first 61 stable homotopy groups, and gives new information about the stable homotopy groups in dimensions 62 through 90. The method relies more heavily on machine computations than previous methods, and is therefore less prone to error. The main mathematical tool is the Adams spectral sequence.
We carefully present an elementary proof of the well known theorem that each homotopy group (or, in degree zero, pointed set) of the inverse limit of a tower of fibrations maps naturally onto the inverse limit of the homotopy groups (or, in degree zero, pointed sets) of the spaces in the tower, with kernel naturally isomorphic to $\lim^{1}$ of the tower of homotopy groups of one dimension higher.
In this paper we give a formula for the homotopy groups of $(n-1)$-connected $2n$-manifolds as a direct sum of homotopy groups of spheres in the case the $n^{th}$ Betti number is larger than $1$. We demonstrate that when the $n^{th}$ Betti number is $1$ the homotopy groups might not have such a decomposition. The techniques used in this computation also yield formulae for homotopy groups of connected sums of sphere products and CW complexes of a similar type. In all the families of spaces considered here, we establish a conjecture of J. C. Moore.
We use the structure of the homotopy groups of the connective spectrum tmf of topological modular forms and the elliptic and Adams-Novikov spectral sequences to compute the homotopy groups of the non-connective version, Tmf, of that spectrum. This is done separately for the localizations at 2, 3 and higher primes.
The symmetric spectra introduced by Hovey, Shipley and Smith are a convenient model for the stable homotopy category with a nice associative and commutative smash product on the point set level and a compatible Quillen closed model structure. About the only disadvantage of this model is that the stable equivalences cannot be defined by inverting those morphisms which induce isomorphisms on homotopy groups, because this would leave too many homotopy types. In this sense the naively defined homotopy groups are often `wrong`, and then their precise relationship to the `true` homotopy groups (i.e.…
Denote by E(Y) the group of homotopy classes of self-homotopy equivalences of a finite-dimensional complex Y. We give a selection of results about certain subgroups of E(Y). We establish a connection between the Gottlieb groups of Y and the subgroup of E(Y) consisting of homotopy classes of self-homotopy equivalences that fix homotopy groups through the dimension of Y, denoted by E_#(Y). We give an upper bound for the solvability class of E_#(Y) in terms of a cone decomposition of Y. We dualize the latter result to obtain an upper bound for the solvability class of the subgroup of E(Y) consist…
In this paper, we generalize the equivariant homotopy groups or equivalently the Rhodes groups. We establish a short exact sequence relating the generalized Rhodes groups and the generalized Fox homotopy groups and we introduce $Γ$-Rhodes groups, where $Γ$ admits a certain co-grouplike structure. Evaluation subgroups of $Γ$-Rhodes groups are discussed.
Let $Y$ be a pointed space and let $\mathcal E(Y^r)$ be the group of based self-equivalences of $Y^r$, $r\geq 2$. For $Y$ a homotopy commutative $H$-group we construct a subgroup $\mathcal E_{\mathrm{Mat}}(Y^r)$ of $\mathcal E(Y^r)$ which has a group structure isomorphic to either $GL_r(\mathbb Z)$, or $GL_r(\mathbb Z_d)$, $d\geq 2$. We classify principal bundles over connected sums of $q$-sphere bundles over $n$-spheres and use the group $\mathcal E_{\mathrm{Mat}}(Y^r)$ to obtain homotopy decompositions of their gauge groups. Using these decompositions we give an integral classification, up t…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the homotopy groups of simply connected finite $p$-local complexes, and define a space to be locally hyperbolic if its homotopy groups have exponential growth. Under some certain conditions related to the functorial decomposition of loop suspension, we prove that the suspended finite complexes are locally hyperbolic if suitable but accessible information of the homotopy groups is known. In particular, we prove that Moore spaces are locally hyperbolic, and other candidates are also given.
Group structures of the 2-primary components of the 31-stem homotopy groups of spheres were studied by Oda in 1979. There are, however, two incompletely determined groups. In this paper, our investigation with Toda's composition method gives structures of them.
We compute the mod(p) homotopy groups of the continuous homotopy fixed point spectrum E_2^{hH_2} for p>2, where E_n is the Landweber exact spectrum whose coefficient ring is the ring of functions on the Lubin-Tate moduli space of lifts of the height n Honda formal group law over F_{p^n}, and H_n is the subgroup WF^x_{p^n} wreath product Gal(F_{p^n}/F_p) of the extended Morava stabilizer group G_n. We examine some consequences of this related to Brown-Comenetz duality and to finiteness properties of homotopy groups of K(n)_*-local spectra. We also indicate a plan for computing pi_*(E_n^{hH_n} s…
For $n\geq 2$ we consider $(n-1)$-connected closed manifolds of dimension at most $(3n-2)$. We prove that away from a finite set of primes, the $p$-local homotopy groups of $M$ are determined by the dimension of the space of indecomposable elements in the cohomology ring $H^\ast(M)$. Moreover, we show that these $p$-local homotopy groups can be expressed as direct sum of $p$-local homotopy groups of spheres. This generalizes some of the results of our earlier work.
