D. K. Biss (Topology and its Applications 124 (2002) 355-371) introduced the topological fundamental group and presented some interesting basic properties of the notion. In this article we intend to extend the above notion to homotopy groups and try to prove some similar basic properties of the topological homotopy groups. We also study more on the topology of the topological homotopy groups in order to find necessary and sufficient conditions for which the topology is discrete. Moreover, we show that studying topological homotopy groups may be more useful than topological fundamental groups.
This paper develops a basic theory of H-groups. We introduce a special quotient of H-groups and extend some algebraic constructions of topological groups to the category of H-groups and H-maps. We use these constructions to prove some advantages in topological homotopy groups. Also, we present a family of spaces that their topological fundamental groups are indiscrete topological group and find out a family of spaces whose topological fundamental group is a topological group.
The notion of the \emph{homotopy type} of a topological stack has been around in the literature for some time. The basic idea is that an atlas $X \to \mathfrak{X}$ of a stack determines a topological groupoid $\mathbb{X}$ with object space $X$. The homotopy type of $\mathfrak{X}$ should be the classifying space $B \mathbb{X}$. The choice of an atlas is not part of the data of a stack and hence it is not immediately clear why this construction of a homotopy type is well-defined, let alone functorial. The purpose of this note is to give an elementary construction of such a homotopy-type functor.
In this paper we analyze some relationships between the topological complexity of a space $X$ and the category of $C_{Δ_X},$ the homotopy cofibre of the diagonal map $Δ_X:X\rightarrow X\times X.$ We establish the equality of the two invariants for several classes of spaces including the spheres, the H-spaces, the real and complex projective spaces and almost all the (standard) lens spaces.
The aim of this paper is to show that homotopy pro-nilpotent structured ring spectra are TQ-local, where structured ring spectra are described as algebras over a spectral operad O. Here, TQ is short for topological Quillen homology, which is weakly equivalent to O-algebra stabilization. An O-algebra is called homotopy pro-nilpotent if it is equivalent to a limit of nilpotent O-algebras. Our result provides new positive evidence to a conjecture by Francis-Gaisgory on Koszul duality for general operads. As an application, we simultaneously extend the previously known 0-connected and nilpotent TQ…
In this paper, using the topology on the set of shape morphisms between arbitrary topological spaces $X$, $Y$, $Sh(X,Y)$, defined by Cuchillo-Ibanez et al. in 1999, we consider a topology on the shape homotopy groups of arbitrary topological spaces which make them Hausdorff topological groups. We then exhibit an example in which $\checkπ_k^{top}$ succeeds in distinguishing the shape type of $X$ and $Y$ while $\checkπ_k$ fails, for all $k\in \Bbb{N}$. Moreover, we present some basic properties of topological shape homotopy groups, among them commutativity of $\checkπ_k^{top}$ with finite produc…
Uchillo-Ibanez et al. introduced a topology on the sets of shape morphisms between arbitrary topological spaces in 1999. In this paper, applying a similar idea, we introduce a topology on the set of coarse shape morphisms $Sh^*(X,Y)$, for arbitrary topological spaces $X$ and $Y$. In particular, we can consider a topology on the coarse shape homotopy group of a topological space $(X,x)$, $Sh^*((S^k,*),(X,x))=\checkπ_k^{*}(X,x)$, which makes it a Hausdorff topological group. Moreover, we study some properties of these topological coarse shape homotopoy groups such as second countability, movabil…
The homotopy type and homotopy groups of some spectra TAF of topological automorphic forms associated to a unitary similitude group GU of type (1,1) are explicitly described in quasi-split cases. The spectrum TAF is shown to be closely related to the spectrum TMF in these cases, and homotopy groups of some of these spectra are explicitly computed.
We define the notion of {\em classifying space} of a topological stack and show that every topological stack \X has a classifying space X which is a topological space well-defined up to weak homotopy equivalence. Under a certain paracompactness condition on \X, we show that X is actually well-defined up to homotopy equivalence. These results are formulated in terms of functors from the category of topological stacks to the (weak) homotopy category of topological spaces. We prove similar results for (small) diagrams of topological stacks.
Working in the context of symmetric spectra, we describe and study a homotopy completion tower for algebras and left modules over operads in the category of modules over a commutative ring spectrum (e.g., structured ring spectra). We prove a strong convergence theorem that for 0-connected algebras and modules over a (-1)-connected operad, the homotopy completion tower interpolates (in a strong sense) between topological Quillen homology and the identity functor. By systematically exploiting strong convergence, we prove several theorems concerning the topological Quillen homology of algebras an…
We determine the v1-periodic homotopy groups of all irreducible p-compact groups (BX,X). In the most difficult, modular, cases, we follow a direct path from their associated invariant polynomials to these homotopy groups. We show that, if p is odd, every irreducible p-compact group has X of the homotopy type of a product of explicit spaces related to p-completed Lie groups.
The purpose of this paper is to introduce $N_k(\ell)$-maps ($1\le k,\ell\le\infty$), which describe higher homotopy normalities, and to study their basic properties and examples. An $N_k(\ell)$-map is defined with higher homotopical conditions. It is shown that a homomorphism is an $N_k(\ell)$-map if and only if there exists fiberwise maps between fiberwise projective spaces with some properties. Also, the homotopy quotient of an $N_k(k)$-map is shown to be an $H$-space if its LS category is not greater than $k$. As an application, we investigate when the inclusions $\operatorname{SU}(m)\to\op…
We exhibit a map f between aspherical spaces X and Y such that f induces an isomorphism on homotopy groups but, with natural topologies, X and Y fail to have homeomorphic fundamental groups. Thus the topological fundamental group has the capacity to distinguish homotopy type when the Whitehead theorem fails.
By an $n$-Hawaiian like space $X$ we mean the natural inverse limit, $\displaystyle{\varprojlim (Y_i^{(n)},y_i^*)}$, where $(Y_i^{(n)},y_i^*)=\bigvee_{j\leq i}(X_j^{(n)},x_j^*)$ is the wedge of $X_j^{(n)}$'s in which $X_j^{(n)}$'s are $(n-1)$-connected, locally $(n-1)$-connected, $n$-semilocally simply connected and compact CW spaces. In this paper, first we show that the natural homomorphism $\displaystyle{β_n:π_n(X,*)\rightarrow \varprojlim π_n(Y_i^{(n)},y_i^*)}$ is bijection. Second, using this fact we prove that the topological $n$-homotopy group of an $n$-Hawaiian like space, $π_n^{top}(X…
A topological groupoid G is K-pointed, if it is equipped with a homomorphism from a topological group K to G. We describe the homotopy groups of such K-pointed topological groupoids and relate these groups to the ordinary homotopy groups in terms of a long exact sequence. As an application, we give an obstruction to presentability of proper regular Lie groupoids.
Motivated by constructions in topological data analysis and algebraic combinatorics, we study homotopy theory on the category of Cech closure spaces $\mathbf{Cl}$, the category whose objects are sets endowed with a Cech closure operator and whose morphisms are the continuous maps between them. We introduce new classes of Cech closure structures on metric spaces, graphs, and simplicial complexes, and we show how each of these cases gives rise to an interesting homotopy theory. In particular, we show that there exists a natural family of Cech closure structures on metric spaces which produces a …
A p-compact group is a mod p homotopy theoretical analogue of a compact Lie group. It is determined the homotopy nilpotency class of a p-compact group having the homotopy type of the $p$-completion of the direct product of spheres.
Quillen showed that simplicial sets form a model category (with appropriate choices of three classes of morphisms), which organized the homotopy theory of simplicial sets. His proof is very difficult and uses even the classification theory of principal bundles. Thus, Goerss-Jardine appealed to topological methods for the verification. In this paper we give a new proof of this organizing theorem of simplicial homotopy theory which is elementary in the sense that it does not use the classifying theory of principal bundles or appeal to topological methods.
We give a combinatorial description of homotopy groups of $ΣK(π,1)$. In particular, all of the homotopy groups of the $3$-sphere are combinatorially given.
We compute the homotopy groups of the spaces of self maps of Lie groups of rank 2, SU(3), Sp(2), and G_2. We use the cell structures of these Lie groups and the standard methods of homotopy theory.
In this article we consider the homotopy theory of stratified spaces through a simplicial point of view. We first consider a model category of filtered simplicial sets over some fixed poset $P$, and show that it is a simplicial combinatorial model category. We then define a generalization of the homotopy groups for any fibrant filtered simplicial set $X$ : the filtered homotopy groups $sπ_n(X)$. They are diagrams of groups built from the homotopy groups of the different pieces of $X$. We then show that the weak equivalences are exactly the morphisms that induce isomorphisms on those filtered h…
The first aim of this paper is to study the $p$-local higher homotopy commutativity of Lie groups in the sense of Sugawara. The second aim is to apply this result to the $p$-local higher homotopy commutativity of gauge groups. Although the higher homotopy commutativity of Lie groups in the sense of Williams is already known, the higher homotopy commutativity in the sense of Sugawara is necessary for this application. The third aim is to resolve the $5$-local higher homotopy non-commutativity problem of the exceptional Lie group $\mathrm{G}_2$, which has been open for a long time.
Lie groupoids generalize transformation groups, and so provide a natural language for studying orbifolds and other noncommutative geometries. In this paper, we investigate a connection between orbifolds and equivariant stable homotopy theory using such groupoids. A different sort of twisted sector, along with a classical theorem of tom Dieck, allows for a natural definition of stable orbifold homotopy groups, and motivates defining extended unstable orbifold homotopy groups generalizing previous definitions.
In \cite{G}, G. Lupton conjectured that the group of self-homotopy equivalences of an $F_0$-space inducing the identity on the homotopy groups is finite. Thus, the aim of this paper is to establish this conjecture.
In this master thesis, we extend results from classical simple homotopy theory to the world of stratified homotopy theory. To obtain a well-established framework to work in, we prove a series of results on two model categories of simplicial sets and topological spaces, both equipped with a notion of filtration, introduced by Sylvain Douteau in his PHD thesis. In particular, we show that there is a fully faithful embedding of homotopy categories from the (finite) filtered simplicial into the filtered topological setting. We also use these results to characterize the morphisms in the topological…
We analyse the homotopy types of gauge groups of principal U(n)-bundles associated to pseudo Real vector bundles in the sense of Atiyah. We provide satisfactory homotopy decompositions of these gauge groups into factors in which the homotopy groups are well known. Therefore, we substantially build upon the low dimensional homotopy groups as provided in a paper by I. Biswas, J. Huisman, and J. Hurtubise.
In this paper we study the nilpotency of certain groups of self homotopy equivalences. Our main goal is to extend, to localized homotopy groups and/or homotopy groups with coefficients, the general principle of Dror and Zabrodsky by which a group of self homotopy equivalences of a finite space which acts nilpotently on the homotopy groups is itself nilpotent.
The paper is devoted to study the behavior of quasitopological homotopy groups on inverse limit spaces. More precisely, we present some conditions under which the quasitopological homotopy group of an inverse limit space and especially a product space is a topological group. Finally, we give some conditions for countability of homotopy groups.
We introduce and compare two approaches to equivariant homotopy theory in a topological or ordinary Quillen model category. For the topological model category of spaces, we generalize Piacenza's result that the categories of topological presheaves indexed by the orbit category of a fixed topological group $G$ and the category of $G$-spaces can be endowed with Quillen equivalent model category structures. We prove an analogous result for any cofibrantly generated model category and discrete group $G$, under certain conditions on the fixed point functors of the subgroups of $G$. These conditions…
The concept of big homotopy theory was introduced by J. Cannon and G. Conner using big intervals of arbitrarily large cardinality to detect big loops. We find, for each space, a canonical cardinal that is sufficient to detect all big loops and all big homotopies in the space.
We provide a topological duality resolution for the spectrum $E_2^{h\mathbb{S}_2^1}$, which itself can be used to build the $K(2)$-local sphere. The resolution is built from spectra of the form $E_2^{hF}$ where $E_2$ is the Morava spectrum for the formal group of a supersingular curve at the prime $2$ and $F$ is a finite subgroup of the automorphisms of that formal group. The results are in complete analogy with the resolutions of Goerss, Henn, Mahowald, and Rezk at the prime $3$, but the methods are of necessity very different. As in the prime $3$ case, the main difficulty is in identifying t…
The purpose of this note is to give a description of the stable homotopy group of some $2$-stage Postnikov systems for a range of dimensions. The considered $2$-stage Postnikov systems has the (weak) homotopy type of a generalized Eilenberg-Mac lane space, then their stable homotopy groups can be calculated by the stable homotopy groups of generalized Eilenberg-Mac lane spaces.
We obtain explicit formulas for the rational homotopy groups of generalised symmetric spaces, i.e., the homogeneous spaces for which the isotropy subgroup appears as the fixed point group of some finite order automorphism of the group. In particular, this gives explicit formulas for the rational homotopy groups of all classical compact symmetric spaces.
For each positive integer Q there exists a path connected metric compactum X such that the Qth-homotopy group of X is compactly generated but not a topological group (with the quotient topology).
We compute the 3-primary v1-periodic homotopy groups of the exceptional Lie group E7. Now E8 at the primes 3 and 5 is the only compact simple Lie group whose odd-primary v1-periodic homotopy groups remian to be computed. The main work is computing the unstable Novikov spectral sequence of ΩE7/Sp(2). Showing that this converges to v1-periodic homotopy groups requires recent work of Bousfield and Bendersky-Thompson.
Let $M$ be a topological monoid with homotopy group completion $ΩBM$. Under a strong homotopy commutativity hypothesis on $M$, we show that $π_k (ΩBM)$ is the quotient of the monoid of free homotopy classes $[S^k, M]$ by its submonoid of nullhomotopic maps. We give two applications. First, this result gives a concrete description of the Lawson homology of a complex projective variety in terms of point-wise addition of spherical families of effective algebraic cycles. Second, we apply this result to monoids built from the unitary, or general linear, representation spaces of discrete groups, lea…
In this paper we show that the nth quasitopological homotopy group of a topological space is isomorphic to (n-1)th quasitopological homotopy group of its loop space and by this fact we obtain some results about quasitopological homotopy groups. Finally, using the long exact sequence of a based pair and a fibration in qTop introduced by Brazas in 2013, we obtain some results in this field.
The $p$-local homotopy types of gauge groups of principal $G$-bundles over $S^4$ are classified when $G$ is a compact connected exceptional Lie group without $p$-torsion in homology except for $(G,p)=(\mathrm{E}_7,5)$.
We discuss the current state of knowledge of stable homotopy groups of spheres. We describe a new computational method that yields a streamlined computation of the first 61 stable homotopy groups, and gives new information about the stable homotopy groups in dimensions 62 through 90. The method relies more heavily on machine computations than previous methods, and is therefore less prone to error. The main mathematical tool is the Adams spectral sequence.
We carefully present an elementary proof of the well known theorem that each homotopy group (or, in degree zero, pointed set) of the inverse limit of a tower of fibrations maps naturally onto the inverse limit of the homotopy groups (or, in degree zero, pointed sets) of the spaces in the tower, with kernel naturally isomorphic to $\lim^{1}$ of the tower of homotopy groups of one dimension higher.
Given a topological group G, its orbit category Orb_G has the transitive G-spaces G/H as objects and the G-equivariant maps between them as morphisms. A well known theorem of Elmendorf then states that the category of G-spaces and the category of contravariant functors Func(Orb_G,Spaces) have equivalent homotopy theories. We extend this result to the context of orbispaces, with the role of Orb_G now played by a category whose objects are topological groups and whose morphisms are given by Hom(H,G) = Mono(H,G) x_G EG. On our way, we endow the category of topological groupoids with notions of we…
