Let $R$ be a principal ideal domain (PID). For a simply connected CW-complex $X$ of dimension $n$, let $Y$ be a space obtained by attaching cells of dimension $q$ to $X$, $q>n$, and let $A(Y)$ denote an Adams-Hilton model of $Y$. If $\mathcal E(A(Y))$ denotes the group of homotopy self-equivalences of $A(Y)$ and $\mathcal E_{*}(A(Y))$ its subgroup of the elements inducing the identity on $H_{*}( Y,R)$, then we construct two short exact sequences: $$\underset{i}{\oplus}\,H_{q}(ΩX,R)\rightarrowtail \mathcal{E}(A(Y))\overset{}{
\twoheadrightarrow}Γ^{q}_{n}\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\,\underset{i}{\oplus}\,H_{q}(ΩX,R) \rightarrowtail \E_{*}(A(Y))\overset{}{
\twoheadrightarrow}Π^{q}_{n} $$ where $i=\mathrm{rank} \,H_{q}(Y,X;R)$, $Γ^{q}_{n}$ is a subgroup of $\aut(\mathrm{Hom}_{}(H_{q}( Y,X;R))\times \E(A(X))$ and $Π^{q}_{n}$ is a subgroup of $\mathcal E_{*}(A(X))$.
In this paper, we construct Adams-Hilton models for the polyhedral products of spheres $(\underline{S})^{\mathcal{K}}$ and Davis-Januszkiewicz spaces $\left(\mathbb{C} P^{\infty}\right)^{\mathcal{K}}$. We show that in these cases the Adams-Hilton model can be chosen so that it coincides with the cobar construction of the homology coalgebra. We apply the resulting models to the study of iterated higher Whitehead products in $\left(\mathbb{C} P^{\infty}\right)^{\mathcal{K}}$. Namely, we explicitly construct a chain in the cobar construction representing the homology class of the Hurewicz image o…
We study the Eckmann-Hilton dual of the little disks algebra structure on iterated loop spaces: With the right definitions, every $n$-fold suspension is a coalgebra over the little $n$-disks operad. This structure induces non-trivial cooperations on the rational homotopy groups of an $n$-fold suspension. We describe the Eckmann-Hilton dual of the Browder bracket, which is a cooperation that forms an obstruction for an $n$-fold suspension to be an $(n+1)$-fold suspension, i.e. if this cooperation is non-zero then the space is not an $(n+1)$-fold suspension. We prove several results in equivaria…
One of the important theorems in homotopy theory is the Hilton splitting. In this paper we will construct all the Hilton homomorphisms by geometrical means and prove a family of sharper symmetry relations of linking coefficients which desuspend and generalize the relations of Kervaire, Haefliger and Steer.
These are notes for a five lecture series intended to uncover large-scale phenomena in the homotopy groups of spheres using the Adams-Novikov Spectral Sequence. The lectures were given in Strasbourg, May 7-11, 2007.
We provide a calculational method for rational stable equivariant homotopy theory for a torus G based on the homology of the Borel construction on fixed points. More precisely we define an abelian torsion model, A_t(G) of finite injective dimension, a homology theory \piAt_* taking values in A_t(G) based on the homology of the Borel construction, and a finite Adams spectral sequence Ext_{A_t(G)}^{*,*}(\piAt_*(X), \piAt_*(Y)) ==> [X,Y]^G_* for rational G-spectra X and Y.
This paper is an English translation of chapter nine of the book "Adams spectral sequence and stable homotopy groups of spheres" by Jinkun Lin (in Chinese)(Sciences Press, Beijing 2007). In this paper, a sequence of new indecomposable families in the stable homotopy groups of spheres such as h_0h_n,h_nb_n,h_0h_nh_m,h_0(h_mb_{n-1}-b_{m-1}h_n) families was detected. The proof of all the detections was stated in this paper in based on several published papers by the author.
We compute the Adams-Novikov E_2-term of a spectrum Q(2) constructed by Behrens. The homotopy groups of Q(2) are closely tied to the 3-primary stable homotopy groups of spheres; in particular, they are conjectured to detect the homotopy beta family of Greek letter elements at the prime 3. Our computation leverages techniques used by Behrens to compute the rational homotopy of Q(2), and leads to a conjecture that the Adams-Novikov E_2-term for Q(2) detects the algebraic beta family in the BP-based Adams-Novikov E_2-term for the 3-local sphere.
A C-motivic modular forms spectrum mmf has recently been constructed. This article presents detailed computational information on the Adams spectral sequence for mmf. This information is essential for computing with the C-motivic and classical Adams spectral sequences that compute the C-motivic and classical stable homotopy groups of spheres.
We survey computations of stable motivic homotopy groups over various fields. The main tools are the motivic Adams spectral sequence, the motivic Adams-Novikov spectral sequence, and the effective slice spectral sequence. We state some projects for future study.
As a step towards understanding the $\mathrm{tmf}$-based Adams spectral sequence, we compute the $K(1)$-local homotopy of $\mathrm{tmf} \wedge \mathrm{tmf}$, using a small presentation of $L_{K(1)}\mathrm{tmf}$ due to Hopkins. We also describe the $K(1)$-local $\mathrm{tmf}$-based Adams spectral sequence.
We describe the first stem of the stable homotopy groups of spheres by using some Puppe sequences, Thom complexes, K-Theory and Adams operations following the ideas of J. Frank Adams. We also touch upon the second and the third stems in this perspective. Neither spectral squences nor Steenrod operations are used.
This document contains large-format Adams charts that compute 2-complete stable homotopy groups, both in the classical context and in the motivic context over C. The charts are essentially complete through the 61-stem and contain partial results to the 70-stem. In the classical context, we believe that these are the most accurate charts of their kind. We also include Adams charts for the motivic homotopy groups of the cofiber of tau.
We establish a differential $d_2(D_1)=h_0^2h_3g_2$ in the $51$-stem of the Adams spectral sequence at the prime $2$, which gives the first correct calculation of the stable 51 and 52 stems. This differential is remarkable since we know of no way to prove it without recourse to the motivic Adams spectral sequence. It is the last undetermined differential in the range of the first author's detailed calculations of the $n$-stems for $n<60$ [6]. This note advertises the use of the motivic Adams spectral sequence to obtain information about classical stable homotopy groups.
We present a detailed analysis of 2-complete stable homotopy groups, both in the classical context and in the motivic context over C. We use the motivic May spectral sequence to compute the cohomology of the motivic Steenrod algebra over C through the 70-stem. We then use the motivic Adams spectral sequence to obtain motivic stable homotopy groups through the 59-stem. In addition to finding all Adams differentials in this range, we also resolve all hidden extensions by 2, eta, and nu, except for a few carefully enumerated exceptions that remain unknown. The analogous classical stable homotopy …
We give a natural construction and a direct proof of the Adams isomorphism for equivariant orthogonal spectra. More precisely, for any finite group G, any normal subgroup N of G, and any orthogonal G-spectrum X, we construct a natural map A of orthogonal G/N-spectra from the homotopy N-orbits of X to the derived N-fixed points of X, and we show that A is a stable weak equivalence if X is cofibrant and N-free. This recovers a theorem of Lewis, May, and Steinberger in the equivariant stable homotopy category, which in the case of suspension spectra was originally proved by Adams. We emphasize th…
A $p$-local compact group is an algebraic object modelled on the homotopy theory associated with $p$-completed classifying spaces of compact Lie groups and p-compact groups. In particular $p$-local compact groups give a unified framework in which one may study $p$-completed classifying spaces from an algebraic and homotopy theoretic point of view. Like connected compact Lie groups and p-compact groups, $p$-local compact groups admit unstable Adams operations - self equivalences that are characterised by their cohomological effect. Unstable Adams operations on $p$-local compact groups were cons…
In this paper we constructs a new nontrivial family in the stable homotopy groups of spheres $π_{p^nq+2pq+q-3}S$ which is of order $p$ and is represented by $k_0h_{n} \in Ext_A^{3,p^nq+2pq+q}(\mathbb{Z}_p,\mathbb{Z}_p)$ in the Adams spectral sequence, where $p\geq 5$ is an odd prime, $n\geq 3$ and $q=2(p-1)$. In the course of the proof, a new family of homotopy elements in $π_{\ast}V(1)$ which is represented by $β_{\ast}{i^{\prime}}_{\ast}i_{\ast}({h}_n)\in Ext_A^{2,p^nq+(p+1)q+1}(H^{\ast}V(1),\mathbb{Z}_p)$ in the Adams sequence is detected.
We use the structure of the homotopy groups of the connective spectrum tmf of topological modular forms and the elliptic and Adams-Novikov spectral sequences to compute the homotopy groups of the non-connective version, Tmf, of that spectrum. This is done separately for the localizations at 2, 3 and higher primes.
The theory of secondary chomology operations leads to a conjecture concerning the algebra of higher cohomology operations in general. This conjecture is discussed here in detail and its connection with homotopy groups of spheres and the Adams spectral sequence is described.
This paper contains an overview of background from stable homotopy theory used by Freed--Hopkins in their work on invertible extended topological field theories. We provide a working guide to the stable homotopy category, to the Steenrod algebra and to computations using the Adams spectral sequence. Many examples are worked out in detail to illustrate the techniques.
We establish a hidden extension in the Adams spectral sequence converging to the stable homotopy groups of spheres at the prime 2 in the 54-stem. This extension is exceptional in that the only proof we know proceeds via Pstragowski's category of synthetic spectra. This was the final unresolved hidden 2-extension in the Adams spectral sequence through dimension 80. We hope this provides a concise demonstration of the computational leverage provided by $\mathbb{F}_2$-synthetic spectra.
Using techniques in motivic homotopy theory, especially the theorem of Gheorghe, the second and the third author on the isomorphism between motivic Adams spectral sequence for $Cτ$ and the algebraic Novikov spectral sequence for $BP_*$, we compute the classical and motivic stable homotopy groups of spheres from dimension 0 to 90, except for some carefully enumerated uncertainties.
We compute some R-motivic stable homotopy groups. For $s - w \leq 11$, we describe the motivic stable homotopy groups $π_{s,w}$ of a completion of the R-motivic sphere spectrum. We apply the $ρ$-Bockstein spectral sequence to obtain R-motivic Ext groups from the C-motivic Ext groups, which are well-understood in a large range. These Ext groups are the input to the R-motivic Adams spectral sequence. We fully analyze the Adams differentials in a range, and we also analyze hidden extensions by $ρ$, 2, and $η$. As a consequence of our computations, we recover Mahowald invariants of many low-dimens…
We discuss the current state of knowledge of stable homotopy groups of spheres. We describe a new computational method that yields a streamlined computation of the first 61 stable homotopy groups, and gives new information about the stable homotopy groups in dimensions 62 through 90. The method relies more heavily on machine computations than previous methods, and is therefore less prone to error. The main mathematical tool is the Adams spectral sequence.
We use derived localization of the bar and nerve constructions to provide simple proofs of a number of results in algebraic topology. This includes a recent generalization of Adams' cobar-construction to the non-simply connected case, and a new model for the homotopy theory of connected topological spaces using an infinity category of discrete monoids.
In this article we show that the $p$-torsion exponent of the stable stems grows sublinearly in $n$ and the $p$-rank of the $E_2$-page of the Adams spectral sequence grows as $\exp(Θ( \log(n)^3))$. Together these bounds provide the first subexponential bound on the size of the stable stems. Conversely, we prove that a certain, precise, version of the failure of the telescope conjecture would imply that the upper bound provided by the Adams $E_2$-page is essentially sharp -- answering the titular question: As big as the fate of the telescope conjecture demands. In an appendix joint with Andrew S…
We discuss the relationship between the m-th homotopy group of the one-point union of r copies of the two-dimensional sphere and the m-th homotopy group of the one-point union of r+1 copies of the Thom space of the oriented two-dimensional universal vector bundle. Using a suitably choosen isomorphism between them a forgetful homomorphism is computed by evaluating on factors of the Hilton splitting.
In previous work it is shown that there is an abelian category A(G) constructed to model rational G-equivariant cohomology theories, where G is a torus of rank r together with a homology functor \piA_* : Gspectra ---> A(G), and an Adams spectral sequence Ext_{A (G)} (\piA_*(X), \piA_*(Y)) ===> [X,Y]^G_* In joint work with Shipley (arxiv:1101.2511), it is shown that the Adams spectral sequence can be lifted to a Quillen equivalence Rational-Gspectra = DG-A (G). The purpose of the present paper is to prove that A(G) has injective dimension precisely r, and to construct certain torsion functors a…
A p-local compact group is an algebraic object modelled on the p-local homotopy theory of classifying spaces of compact Lie groups and p-compact groups. In the study of these objects unstable Adams operations, are of fundamental importance. In this paper we define unstable Adams operations within the theory of p-local compact groups, and show that such operations exist under rather mild conditions. More precisely, we prove that for a given p-local compact group G and a sufficiently large positive integer $m$, there exists an injective group homomorphism from the group of p-adic units which are…
We use the $C_2$-equivariant Adams spectral sequence to compute part of the $C_2$-equivariant stable homotopy groups $π^{C_2}_{n,n}$. This allows us to recover results of Bredon and Landweber on the image of the geometric fixed-points map from the equivariant homotopy group $π^{C_2}_{n,n}$ to the classical $π_0$. We also recover results of Mahowald and Ravenel on the Mahowald root invariants of the elements $2^k$.
In this note, we use Curtis's algorithm and the Lambda algebra to compute the algebraic Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence of the suspension spectrum of $\mathbb{R}P^\infty$ with the aid of a computer, which gives us its Adams $E_2$-page in the range of $t<72$. We also compute the transfer map on the Adams $E_2$-pages. These data are used in our computations of the stable homotopy groups of $\mathbb{R}P^\infty$ in [6] and of the stable homotopy groups of spheres in [7].
We use an Adams spectral sequence to calculate the R-motivic stable homotopy groups after inverting eta. The first step is to apply a Bockstein spectral sequence in order to obtain h_1-inverted R-motivic Ext groups, which serve as the input to the eta-inverted R-motivic Adams spectral sequence. The second step is to analyze Adams differentials. The final answer is that the Milnor-Witt (4k-1)-stem has order 2^{u+1}, where u is the 2-adic valuation of 4k. This answer is reminiscent of the classical image of J. We also explore some of the Toda bracket structure of the eta-inverted R-motivic stabl…
The focus of this paper is the comparison of two unstable homotopy spectral sequences-- the unstable mod p Adams spectral sequence that computes the unstable homotopy of a p-complete space, and the Goerss--Hopkins spectral sequence, which computes the unstable homotopy of the space of E-infinity maps between Hk-algebras, where k is the algebraic closure of the field with p elements and p is an odd prime. Using an adjunction between p-complete nilpotent spaces and a subset of Hk-algebras, this paper shows that the unit of this adjunction provides an isomorphism between these spectral sequences.
Bousfield recently gave a formula for the odd-primary v1-periodic homotopy groups of a finite H-space in terms of its K-theory and Adams operations. We apply Bousfield's theorem to give explicit determinations of the v1-periodic homotopy groups of (E8,5) and (E8,3), thus completing the determination of all odd-primary v1-periodic homotopy groups of compact simple Lie groups, a project suggested by Mimura in 1989. The method involves no homotopy theoretic input and no spectral sequences. The input is the second eexterior power operation in the representation ring of E8, which we determine using…
We construct an abelian category A(G) of sheaves over a category of closed subgroups of the r-torus G and show it is of finite injective dimension. It can be used as a model for rational $G$-spectra in the sense that there is a homology theory \piA_*: G-spectra/Q --> A(G) on rational G-spectra with values in A(G), and the associated Adams spectral sequence converges for all rational $G$-spectra and collapses at a finite stage.
A geometric approach to the stable homotopy groups of spheres is developed in this paper, based on the Pontryagin-Thom construction. The task of this approach is to obtain an alternative proof of the Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel theorem [H-H-R] on Kervaire invariants in all dimensions, except, possibly, a finite number of dimensions. In the framework of this approach, the Adams theorem on the Hopf invariant is studied, for all dimensions with the exception of 15, 31, 63, 127. The new approach is based on the methods of geometric topology.
In this paper, we study the cohomology of the Morava stabilizer algebra $S(3)$. As an application, we show that for $p \geq 7$, if $s\not \equiv 0, \pm 1 \,\, mod \,p $, $n\not \equiv 1 \,\, mod\, 3$, $n>1$, then $ζ_nγ_s$ is a nontrivial product in $π_*(S)$ by Adams-Novikov spectral sequence, where $ζ_n$ is created by R. Cohen \cite{Co}, $γ_s$ is a third periodic homotopy elements.
The well-known Eckmann-Hilton Principle may be applied to prove that fundamental groups of $H$-spaces are commutative. In this paper, we identify an infinitary analogue of the Eckmann-Hilton Principle that applies to fundamental groups of all topological monoids and slightly more general objects called pre-$Δ$-monoids. In particular, we show that every pre-$Δ$-monoid $M$ is "transfinitely $π_1$-commutative" in the sense that permutation of the factors of any infinite loop-concatenation indexed by a countably infinite order and based at the identity $e\in M$ is a homotopy invariant action. We a…
We study a collection of operations on the cohomotopy of any space, with which it becomes a "beta-ring", an algebraic structure analogous to a lambda-ring. In particular, this ring possesses Adams operations, represented by maps on the infinite loop space of the sphere spectrum. We compute their effect in homotopy on the image of J, and in mod 2 cohomology. The motivation comes from the interpretation of the symmetric group as the general linear group of the "field with one element", which leads to an analogy between cohomotopy and algebraic K-theory. A good deal of this article may be conside…
An action of A on X is a map F: AxX to X such that F|_X = id: X to X. The restriction F|_A: A to X of an action is called a cyclic map. Special cases of these notions include group actions and the Gottlieb groups of a space, each of which has been studied extensively. We prove some general results about actions and their Eckmann-Hilton duals. For instance, we classify the actions on an H-space that are compatible with the H-structure. As a corollary, we prove that if any two actions F and F' of A on X have cyclic maps f and f' with Omega(f) = Omega(f'), then Omega(F) and Omega(F') give the sam…
Classical homological algebra takes place in additive categories. In homotopy theory such additive categories arise as homotopy categories of ``additive groupoid enriched categories'', in which a secondary analog of homological algebra can be performed. We introduce secondary chain complexes and secondary resolutions leading to the concept of secondary derived functors. As a main result we show that the E_3-term of the Adams spectral sequence can be expressed as a secondary derived functor. This result can be used to compute the E_3-term explicitly by an algorithm.
The James fibrations give rise to the geometric EHP sequences of homotopy groups of spheres. Using techniques from the Lambda algebra, \cite{BCKQRS66} shows that there are similar long exact sequences of Ext groups defining the $E_{2}-$page of the Bousfield-Kan spectral sequence (also known as the unstable Adams spectral sequence) computing homotopy groups of spheres. In this paper, we give another proof for this phenomenon.
We characterize the 2-line of the p-local Adams-Novikov spectral sequence in terms of modular forms satisfying a certain explicit congruence condition for primes p > 3. We give a similar characterization of the 1-line, reinterpreting some earlier work of A. Baker and G. Laures. These results are then used to deduce that, for l a prime which generates the p-adic units, the spectrum Q(l) detects the alpha and beta families in the stable stems.
Let E(n) and T(m) for nonnegative integers n and m denote the Johnson-Wilson and the Ravenel spectra, respectively. Given a spectrum whose E(n)_*-homology is E(n)_*(T(m))/(v_1,...,v_{n-1}), then each homotopy group of it estimates the order of each homotopy group of L_nT(m). We here study the E(n)-based Adams E_2-term of it and present that the determination of the E_2-term is unexpectedly complex for odd prime case. At the prime two, we determine the E_{infty}-term for pi_*(L_2T(1)/(v_1)), whose computation is easier than that of pi_*(L_2T(1)) as we expect.
We describe Bott towers as sequences of toric manifolds M^k, and identify the omniorientations which correspond to their original construction as toric varieties. We show that the suspension of M^k is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of Thom complexes, and display its complex K-theory as an algebra over the coefficient ring. We extend the results to KO-theory for several families of examples, and compute the effects of the realification homomorphism; these calculations breathe geometric life into Bahri and Bendersky's recent analysis of the Adams Spectral Sequence. By way of application we inves…
