We study a collection of operations on the cohomotopy of any space, with which it becomes a "beta-ring", an algebraic structure analogous to a lambda-ring. In particular, this ring possesses Adams operations, represented by maps on the infinite loop space of the sphere spectrum. We compute their effect in homotopy on the image of J, and in mod 2 cohomology. The motivation comes from the interpretation of the symmetric group as the general linear group of the "field with one element", which leads to an analogy between cohomotopy and algebraic K-theory.
A good deal of this article may be considered as a survey of the theory of beta-rings.
Let $p$ be a prime and let $π^n(X;\mathbb{Z}/p^r)=[X,M_n(\mathbb{Z}/p^r)]$ be the set of homotopy classes of based maps from CW-complexes $X$ into the mod $p^r$ Moore spaces $M_n(\mathbb{Z}/p^r)$ of degree $n$, where $\mathbb{Z}/p^r$ denotes the integers mod $p^r$. In this paper we firstly determine the modular cohomotopy groups $π^n(X;\mathbb{Z}/p^r)$ up to extensions by classical methods of primary cohomology operations and give conditions for the splitness of the extensions. Secondly we utilize some unstable homotopy theory of Moore spaces to study the modular cohomotopy groups; especially,…
In recent work by Clarke, Crossley and the second author, various algebras of stable degree zero operations in p-local K-theory were described explicitly. The elements are certain infinite sums of Adams operations. Here we show how to make sense of the same expressions for p-local cobordism and for BP, thus identifying the "Adams subalgebra" of the algebras of operations. We prove that the Adams subalgebra is the centre of the ring of degree zero operations.
The elements of the ring of bidegree (0,0) additive unstable operations in complex K-theory can be described explicitly as certain infinite sums of Adams operations. Here we show how to make sense of the same expressions for complex cobordism MU, thus identifying the "Adams subring" of the corresponding ring of cobordism operations. We prove that the Adams subring is the centre of the ring of bidegree (0,0) additive unstable cobordism operations. For an odd prime p, the analogous result in the p-local split setting is also proved.
We prove in this paper that every $p$-local compact group is approximated by transporter systems over finite $p$-groups. To do so, we use unstable Adams operations acting on a given $p$-local compact group and study the structure of resulting fixed points.
A p-local compact group is an algebraic object modelled on the p-local homotopy theory of classifying spaces of compact Lie groups and p-compact groups. In the study of these objects unstable Adams operations, are of fundamental importance. In this paper we define unstable Adams operations within the theory of p-local compact groups, and show that such operations exist under rather mild conditions. More precisely, we prove that for a given p-local compact group G and a sufficiently large positive integer $m$, there exists an injective group homomorphism from the group of p-adic units which are…
A $p$-local compact group is an algebraic object modelled on the homotopy theory associated with $p$-completed classifying spaces of compact Lie groups and p-compact groups. In particular $p$-local compact groups give a unified framework in which one may study $p$-completed classifying spaces from an algebraic and homotopy theoretic point of view. Like connected compact Lie groups and p-compact groups, $p$-local compact groups admit unstable Adams operations - self equivalences that are characterised by their cohomological effect. Unstable Adams operations on $p$-local compact groups were cons…
In this paper we establish a formula for computing $d_2(sq^i(x))$ where $x$ is a permanent cycle in the $C_2$-equivariant Adams spectral sequence or the motivic Adams spectral sequence over $Spec(\mathbb{R})$. This requires establishing that the Adams towers have an $H_{\infty}$-structure as well as determining the attaching maps for $C_2$-equivariant projective spaces. The attaching maps of $C_2$-equivariant projective spaces can then be used to determine the coefficients of differentials in both the equivariant and motivic case. At the end some sample computations are given.
Localized at almost all primes, we describe the structure of differentials in several important spectral sequences that compute the cohomology of classifying spaces of topological Kac-Moody groups. In particular, we show that for all but a finite set of primes, these spectral sequences collapse and that there are no additive extension problems. We also describe some appealing consequences of these results. The main tool is the use of the naturality properties of unstable Adams operations on these classifying spaces.
Let $G$ be $U(n)$, $SU(n)$, $Sp(n)$ or $Spin(n)$. In this short note we give explicit general formulas for Adams operations on $K^*(G)$, and eigenvectors of Adams operations on $K^*(U(n))$.
We describe the dualization of the algebra of secondary cohomology operations in terms of generators extending the Milnor dual of the Steenrod algebra. In this way we obtain explicit formulae for the computation of the E_3-term of the Adams spectral sequence converging to the stable homotopy groups of spheres.
We describe a variant construction of the unstable Adams spectral the sequence for a space $Y$, associated to any free simplicial resolution of $H^*(Y;R)$ for $R=\mathbb{F}_p$ or $\mathbb{Q}$. We use this construction to describe the differentials and filtration in the spectral sequence in terms of appropriate systems of higher cohomology operations.
We analyze the structure of the virtual (orbifold) K-theory ring of the complex orbifold P(1,n) and its virtual Adams (or power) operations, by using the non-Abelian localization theorem of Edidin-Graham. In particular, we identify the group of virtual line elements and obtain a natural presentation for the virtual K-theory ring in terms of these virtual line elements. This yields a surjective homomorphism from the virtual K-theory ring of P(1,n) to the ordinary K-theory ring of a crepant resolution of the cotangent bundle of P(1,n) which respects the Adams operations. Furthermore, there is a …
Adams operations are the natural transformations of the representation ring functor on the category of finite groups, and they are one way to describe the usual lambda-ring structure on these rings. From the representation-theoretical point of view, they codify some of the symmetric monoidal structure of the representation category. We show that the monoidal structure on the category alone, regardless of the particular symmetry, determines all the odd Adams operations. On the other hand, we give examples to show that monoidal equivalences do not have to preserve the second Adams operations and…
We prove the classical Riemann-Roch theorems for the Adams operations $\,ψ^j\,$ on $K$-theory: a statement with coefficients on $\mathbb{Z}[j^{-1}]$, that holds for arbitrary projective morphisms, as well as another one with integral coefficients, that is valid for closed immersions. In presence of rational coefficients, we also analyze the relation between the corresponding Riemann-Roch formula for one Adams operation and the analogous formula for the Chern character. To do so, we complete the elementary exposition of the work of Panin-Smirnov that was initiated by the first author in a previ…
We describe the first stem of the stable homotopy groups of spheres by using some Puppe sequences, Thom complexes, K-Theory and Adams operations following the ideas of J. Frank Adams. We also touch upon the second and the third stems in this perspective. Neither spectral squences nor Steenrod operations are used.
We prove analogues for odd primes of results of Snaith and Barker-Snaith. Let l denote the p-complete connective Adams summand and consider the group of left l-module automorphisms of l smash l in the stable homotopy category which induce the identity on mod p homology. We prove a group isomorphism between this group and a certain group of infinite invertible upper triangular matrices with entries in the p-adic integers. We determine information about the matrix corresponding to the automorphism 1 smash Psi^q, where Psi^q is the Adams operation and q is an integer which generates the p-adic un…
We describe explicitly the algebras of degree zero operations in connective and periodic p-local complex K-theory. Operations are written uniquely in terms of certain infinite linear combinations of Adams operations, and we give formulas for the product and coproduct structure maps. It is shown that these rings of operations are not Noetherian. Versions of the results are provided for the Adams summand and for real K-theory.
The theory of secondary chomology operations leads to a conjecture concerning the algebra of higher cohomology operations in general. This conjecture is discussed here in detail and its connection with homotopy groups of spheres and the Adams spectral sequence is described.
We compute the $RO(A)$-graded coefficients of $A$-equivariant complex and real topological $K$-theory for $A$ a finite elementary abelian $2$-group, together with all products, transfers, restrictions, power operations, and Adams operations.
We describe a conjecture on the algebra of higher cohomology operations which leads to the computations of the differentials in the Adams spectral sequence. For this we introduce the notion of an n-th order track category which is suitable to study higher order Toda brackets and the differentials in spectral sequences. We describe various examples of higher order track categories which are topological, in particular the track category of higher cohomology operations. Also differential algebras give rise to higher order track categories.
For stable degree zero operations, and also for additive unstable operations of bidegree (0,0), it is known that the centre of the ring of operations for complex cobordism is isomorphic to the corresponding ring of connective complex K-theory operations. Similarly, the centre of the ring of BP operations is the corresponding ring for the Adams summand of p-local connective complex K-theory. Here we show that, in the additive unstable context, this result holds with BP replaced by BP<n> for any n. Thus, for all chromatic heights, the only central operations are those coming from K-theory.
Bousfield recently gave a formula for the odd-primary v1-periodic homotopy groups of a finite H-space in terms of its K-theory and Adams operations. We apply Bousfield's theorem to give explicit determinations of the v1-periodic homotopy groups of (E8,5) and (E8,3), thus completing the determination of all odd-primary v1-periodic homotopy groups of compact simple Lie groups, a project suggested by Mimura in 1989. The method involves no homotopy theoretic input and no spectral sequences. The input is the second eexterior power operation in the representation ring of E8, which we determine using…
We describe additive (unstable) operations from a theory A^* obtained from Algebraic Cobordism of M.Levine-F.Morel by change of coefficients to any oriented cohomology theory B^*. We prove that there is 1-to-1 correspondence between the set of operations, and the set of transformations: A^n((P^{\infty})^{\times r}) ---> B^m((P^{\infty})^{\times r}) satisfying certain simple properties. This provides an effective tool of constructing such operations. As an application, we prove that (unstable) additive operations in Algebraic Cobordism are in 1-to-1 correspondence with the L\otimes_Z Q-linear c…
We construct a map from the classifying space of a discrete Kac-Moody group over the algebraic closure of the field with p elements to the classifying space of a complex topological Kac-Moody group and prove that it is a homology equivalence at primes q different from p. This generalises a classical result of Quillen-Friedlander-Mislin for Lie groups. As an application, we construct unstable Adams operations for general Kac-Moody groups compatible with the Frobenius homomorphism. In contrast to the Lie case, the homotopy fixed points of these unstable Adams operations cannot be realized at q a…
The aim of this article is to provide space level maps between configuration spaces of graphs that are predicted by algebraic manipulations of cellular chains. More explicitly, we consider edge contraction and half-edge deletion, and identify the homotopy cofibers in terms of configuration spaces of simpler graphs. The construction's main benefit lies in making the operations functorial - in particular, graph minors give rise to compatible maps at the level of fundamental groups as well as generalized (co)homology theories. As applications we provide a long exact sequence for half-edge deletio…
We introduce a new morphism between algebraic and hermitian K-theory. The topological analog is the Adams operation in real K-theory. From this morphism, we deduce a lower bound for the higher algebraic K-theory of a ring A in terms of the classical Witt group of the ring A tensored by its opposite ring.
In 1993, Broué, Malle and Michel initiated the study of spetses on the Greek island bearing the same name. These are mysterious objects attached to non-real Weyl groups. In algebraic topology, a $p$-compact group $\mathbf{X}$ is a space which is a homotopy-theoretic $p$-local analogue of a compact Lie group. A connected $p$-compact group $\mathbf{X}$ is determined by its root datum which in turn determines its Weyl group $W_\mathbf{X}$. In this article we give strong numerical evidence for a connection between these two objects by considering the case when $\mathbf{X}$ is the exotic $2$-compac…
