The theory of secondary chomology operations leads to a conjecture concerning the algebra of higher cohomology operations in general. This conjecture is discussed here in detail and its connection with homotopy groups of spheres and the Adams spectral sequence is described.
In the rational cohomology of a 1-connected space a structure of $C_{\infty}$-algebra is constructed and it is shown that this object determines the rational homotopy type
Homotopy theory folklore tells us that the sheaf defining the cohomology theory Tmf of topological modular forms is unique up to homotopy. Here we provide a proof of this fact, although we claim no originality for the statement. This retroactively reconciles all previous constructions of Tmf.
This article shows several new methods for proofs on Kan complexes while using them to give a compact introduction to the homotopy groups of these complexes. Then more advanced objects are studied starting with homology and the Hurewicz homomorphism. Eilenberg-Mac Lane-spaces are constructed explicitly and can then be used to define spectral cohomology. In the end the equivalence to the usual simplicial cohomology is shown.
In this paper, we show that for finite $CW$-complexes $X$ and two-stage space $Y$ (for example $n$-spheres $S^n$, homogeneous spaces and $F_0$-spaces), the rational homotopy type of $\map(X, Y)$ is determined by the cohomology algebra $H^*(X; \Q)$ and the rational homotopy type of $Y$. From this, we deduce the existence of H-structures on a component of the mapping space $\map(X, Y)$, assuming the cohomology algebras of $X$ and $Y$ are isomorphism. Finally, we will show that $\map(X, Y; f)\simeq\map(X, Y; f')$ if the corresponding \emph{Maurer-Cartan elements} are connected by an algebra autom…
It is well known that cohomology with compact supports is not a homotopy invariant but only a proper homotopy one. However, as the proper category lacks of general categorical properties, a Brown representability theorem type does not seem reachable. However, by proving such a theorem for the so called exterior cohomology in the complete and cocomplete exterior category, we show that the $n$-th cohomology with compact supports of a given countable, locally finite, finite dimensional relative CW-complex $(X,\mathbb{R}_+)$ is naturally identified with the set $[X,K_n]^{\mathbb{R}_+}$ of exterior…
We compute the cohomology of the subalgebra $A^{C_2}(1)$ of the $C_2$-equivariant Steenrod algebra $A^{C_2}$. This serves as the input to the $C_2$-equivariant Adams spectral sequence converging to the $RO(C_2)$-graded homotopy groups of an equivariant spectrum $ko_{C_2}$. Our approach is to use simpler $\mathbb{C}$-motivic and $\mathbb{R}$-motivic calculations as stepping stones.
We study connected mod p finite A_p-spaces admitting AC_n-space structures with n<p for an odd prime p. Our result shows that if n is greator than (p-1)/2, then the mod p Steenrod algebra acts on the mod p cohomology of such a space in a systematic way. Moreover, we consider A_p-spaces which are mod p homotopy equivalent to product spaces of odd dimensional spheres. Then we determine the largest integer n for which such a space admits an AC_n-space structure compatible with the A_p-space structure.
In this paper, we describe the homotopy type of the homotopy fixed point sets of $S^3$-actions on rational spheres and complex projective spaces, and provide some properties of $S^1$-actions on a general rational complex.
William Browder in his paper "Surgery and the theory of differentiable transformation groups" developed surgery techniques to study semi-free actions of S1 on homotopy spheres, under the additional assumption that the fixed point set is a homotopy sphere. He used this surgery to show how to construct such actions. In this paper, I discussed a similar theory for semi-free actions of S3 on homotopy spheres. An open problem is raised at the end of the paper.
We calculate the rational homotopy and the K(1)-local homotopy of the K(2)-local sphere at the prime 3 and level 2. We use this to verify the chromatic splitting conjecture in this case.
There are two main approaches to the problem of realizing a $Π$-algebra (a graded group $Λ$ equipped with an action of the primary homotopy operations) as the homotopy groups of a space $X$. Both involve trying to realize an algebraic free simplicial resolution $G_\bullet$ of $Λ$ by a simplicial space $W_\bullet$ and proceed by induction on the simplicial dimension. The first provides a sequence of André-Quillen cohomology classes in $H_{AQ}^{n+2}(Λ;Ω^{n}Λ)$ for $n \geq 1$ as obstructions to the existence of successive Postnikov sections for $W_\bullet$ by work of Dwyer, Kan and Stover. The se…
We explain how higher homotopy operations, defined topologically, may be identified under mild assumptions with (the last of) the Dwyer-Kan-Smith cohomological obstructions to rectifying homotopy-commutative diagrams.
The reader of doi:10.1016/j.topol.2010.08.006 might conjecture that Δ(\barΠ_n)/G is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres for any n>=3 and any subgroup G<S_n. We disprove this by showing that Δ(\barΠ_p)/C_p is not homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres for any prime number p>=5.
We discuss the current state of knowledge of stable homotopy groups of spheres. We describe a new computational method that yields a streamlined computation of the first 61 stable homotopy groups, and gives new information about the stable homotopy groups in dimensions 62 through 90. The method relies more heavily on machine computations than previous methods, and is therefore less prone to error. The main mathematical tool is the Adams spectral sequence.
These are notes for a five lecture series intended to uncover large-scale phenomena in the homotopy groups of spheres using the Adams-Novikov Spectral Sequence. The lectures were given in Strasbourg, May 7-11, 2007.
We identify Morita cohomology, which is a categorification of the cohmology of a topological space X, with the category of homotopy locally constant sheaves of perfect complexes on X.
Group structures of the 2-primary components of the 31-stem homotopy groups of spheres were studied by Oda in 1979. There are, however, two incompletely determined groups. In this paper, our investigation with Toda's composition method gives structures of them.
Using techniques in motivic homotopy theory, especially the theorem of Gheorghe, the second and the third author on the isomorphism between motivic Adams spectral sequence for $Cτ$ and the algebraic Novikov spectral sequence for $BP_*$, we compute the classical and motivic stable homotopy groups of spheres from dimension 0 to 90, except for some carefully enumerated uncertainties.
We develop a simple theory of André-Quillen cohomology for commutative differential graded algebras over a field of characteristic zero. We then relate it to the homotopy groups of function spaces and spaces of homotopy self-equivalences of rational nilpotent $CW$-complexes. This puts certain results of Sullivan in a more conceptual framework.
Collection of (equivariant) $\rm{PL}$-mappings admitting a relative abelian, cyclic, quaternionic, bicyclic, and quaternionic-cyclic structures are constructed.
We describe the first stem of the stable homotopy groups of spheres by using some Puppe sequences, Thom complexes, K-Theory and Adams operations following the ideas of J. Frank Adams. We also touch upon the second and the third stems in this perspective. Neither spectral squences nor Steenrod operations are used.
We define inductively a sequence of purely algebraic invariants - namely, classes in the Quillen cohomology of the Pi-algebra π_* X - for distinguishing between different homotopy types of spaces. Another sequence of such cohomology classes allows one to decide whether a given abstract Pi-algebra can be realized as the homotopy Pi-algebra of a space in the first place. The paper is written for a relatively general "resolution model category", so it also applies, for example, to rational homotopy types.
This short note regards an observation about the recent theory of prismatic cohomology developed by Bhatt and Scholze. In particular, by applying a functor of Mandell, we see that the étale comparison theorem in the prismatic theory reproduces the $p$-adic homotopy type for a smooth proper complex variety with good reduction mod $p$.
We present a new technique for analyzing the v_0-Bockstein spectral sequence studied by Shimomura and Yabe. Employing this technique, we derive a conceptually simpler presentation of the homotopy groups of the E(2)-local sphere for p > 3. We identify and correct some errors in the original Shimomura-Yabe calculation. We deduce the related K(2)-local homotopy groups, and discuss their manifestation of Gross-Hopkins duality.
Let $X$ be a $4$-dimensional toric orbifold. If $H^3(X)$ has a non-trivial odd primary torsion, then we show that $X$ is homotopy equivalent to the wedge of a Moore space and a CW-complex. As a corollary, given two 4-dimensional toric orbifolds having no 2-torsion in the cohomology, we prove that they have the same homotopy type if and only their integral cohomology rings are isomorphic.
Due to the deep work of Tillmann, Madsen, Weiss and Galatius, the cohomology of the stable mapping class group $\gaminf$ is known with rational or finite field coefficients. Little is known about the integral cohomology. In this paper, we study the first four cohomology groups. Also, we compute the first few steps of the Postnikov tower of $B \gaminf^+$, the Quillen plus construction applied to $B \gaminf$. Our method relies on the Madsen-Weiss theorem, a few known computations of stable homotopy groups of spheres and projective spaces and on a certain action of the binary icosahedral group on…
The comparison map from bounded cohomology to singular cohomology plays an important role in the study of bounded cohomology theory and its applications. The vanishing and covering theorems of Gromov and Ivanov show interesting and useful properties of the comparison map under appropriate assumptions. We discuss an approach to these theorems, based on the general homotopy-theoretic properties of the comparison map, and obtain new proofs and refined versions of these results.
We study the rational homotopy types of classifying spaces of automorphism groups of smooth simply connected manifolds of dimension at least five. We give dg Lie algebra models for the homotopy automorphisms and the block diffeomorphisms of such manifolds. Moreover, we use these models to calculate the rational cohomology of the classifying spaces of the homotopy automorphisms and block diffeomorphisms of the manifold #^g S^d x S^d relative to an embedded disk as g tends to infinity. The answer is expressed in terms of stable cohomology of arithmetic groups and invariant Lie algebra cohomology…
In this paper, we study the rational cohomology rings of indefinite Kac-Moody groups and their flag manifolds. By extracting the information of cohomology from the Poincaré series, we are able to determine the rational cohomology rings of Kac-Moody groups and their flag manifolds. Since Kac-Moody groups and their flag manifolds are rational formal, we also determine their rational homotopy groups and rational homotopy types.
In the paper \emph{K.~Sigmon} A strong homotopy axiom for Alexander cohomology, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. \textbf{31:1} (1972), 271--275 it was proven that if $G$ is compact topological group or field then in the Homotopy Axiom for Alexander-Spanier-Kolmogoroff cohomology the parameter segment $[0, 1]$ can be replaced by any compact connected space $T$. The purpose of the paper is to shows that the parameter space $T$ can not be replaced in general by locally compact connected space.
This paper is an English translation of chapter nine of the book "Adams spectral sequence and stable homotopy groups of spheres" by Jinkun Lin (in Chinese)(Sciences Press, Beijing 2007). In this paper, a sequence of new indecomposable families in the stable homotopy groups of spheres such as h_0h_n,h_nb_n,h_0h_nh_m,h_0(h_mb_{n-1}-b_{m-1}h_n) families was detected. The proof of all the detections was stated in this paper in based on several published papers by the author.
In this paper, we compute the homology group and cohomology algebra of various polyhedral product objects uniformly from the point of view of diagonal tensor product. As applications, we introduce the polyhedral product method into commutative algebra and show that the homotopy types of polyhedral product spaces depend on not only the homotopy type of each summand pair but also on the character coproduct of the pair.
This paper uses a relative of BP-cohomology to prove a theorem in characteristic p algebra. Specifically, we obtain some new necessary conditions for the existence of sums-of-squares formulas over fields of characteristic p > 2. These conditions were previously known in characteristic zero by results of Davis. Our proof uses a generalized etale cohomology theory called etale BP2.
We show that that classical rational homotopy theory in the sense of Sullivan [6] can be extended compactly supported setting. This presents a simplicial version of the compactly supported de Rham complex in characteristic zero, and proving that it models singular compactly supported cohomology. This presents new avenues of possible study in proper homotopy theory, and further extensions of the ideas within the classical literature of Quillen [5] and Sullivan.
A geometric approach to the stable homotopy groups of spheres is developed in this paper, based on the Pontryagin-Thom construction. The task of this approach is to obtain an alternative proof of the Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel theorem [H-H-R] on Kervaire invariants in all dimensions, except, possibly, a finite number of dimensions. In the framework of this approach, the Adams theorem on the Hopf invariant is studied, for all dimensions with the exception of 15, 31, 63, 127. The new approach is based on the methods of geometric topology.
We bound the volume of the homotopy groups of the 2-local Goodwillie approximations of a sphere in terms of the amount of $2$-torsion in the stable stems, providing a Goodwillie-theoretic refinement of a result of Burklund and Senger (arXiv:2203.00670). At the $2^k$-excisive approximation, this bound is obtained by `multiplying the stable answer by a polynomial of degree $k$'. The main tool is Behrens' Goodwillie-EHP Long Exact Sequence.
Let $S(V)$ be a complex linear sphere of a finite group $G$. %the space of unit vectors in a complex representation $V$ of a finite group $G$. Let $S(V)^{*n}$ denote the $n$-fold join of $S(V)$ with itself and let $\aut_G(S(V)^*)$ denote the space of $G$-equivariant self homotopy equivalences of $S(V)^{*n}$. We show that for any $k \geq 1$ there exists $M>0$ which depends only on $V$ such that $|π_k \aut_G(S(V)^{*n})| \leq M$ is for all $n \gg 0$.
We compute the homotopy groups of the η-periodic motivic sphere spectrum over a finite-dimensional field k with characteristic not 2 and in which -1 a sum of four squares. We also study the general characteristic 0 case and show that the η-periodic slice spectral sequence over Q determines the η-periodic slice spectral sequence over all extensions of Q. This leads to a speculation on the role of a "connective Witt-theoretic J-spectrum" in η-periodic motivic homotopy theory.
For primes p>=3, Cohen, Moore, and Neisendorfer showed that the exponent of the p-torsion in the homotopy groups of S^2n+1 is p^n. This was obtained as a consequence of a thorough analysis of the homotopy theory of Moore spaces. Anick further developed this for p>=5 by constructing a homotopy fibration S^2n-1 --> T^2n+1(p^r) --> Loop S^2n+1 whose connecting map is degree p^r on the bottom cell. A much simpler construction of such a fibration for p>=3 was given by Gray and the author using new methods. In this paper the new methods are used to start over, first constructing Anick's fibration fo…
We compute the cohomology of the unordered configuration spaces of the sphere $S^2$ with integral and with $\mathbb{Z}/p \mathbb{Z}$-coefficients using a cell complex by Fuks, Vainshtein and Napolitano.
The Morava stabilizer groups play a dominating role in chromatic stable ho-motopy theory. In fact, for suitable spectra X, for example all finite spectra, thechromatic homotopy type of X at chromatic level n \textgreater{} 0 and a given prime p islargely controlled by the continuous cohomology of a certain p-adic Lie group Gn,in stable homotopy theory known under the name of Morava stabilizer group oflevel n at p, with coefficients in the corresponding Morava module (En)$\star$X.
Mahowald's conjecture arose as part of a program attempting to view chromatic phenomena in stable homotopy theory through the lens of the classical Adams spectral sequence. The conjecture predicts the existence of nonzero classes in the cohomology of the finite sub-Hopf algebras $A(n)$ of the mod 2 Steenrod algebra that correspond to generators in the homotopy rings of certain periodic spectra. The purpose of this note is to present a proof of the conjecture.

In this paper we constructs a new nontrivial family in the stable homotopy groups of spheres $π_{p^nq+2pq+q-3}S$ which is of order $p$ and is represented by $k_0h_{n} \in Ext_A^{3,p^nq+2pq+q}(\mathbb{Z}_p,\mathbb{Z}_p)$ in the Adams spectral sequence, where $p\geq 5$ is an odd prime, $n\geq 3$ and $q=2(p-1)$. In the course of the proof, a new family of homotopy elements in $π_{\ast}V(1)$ which is represented by $β_{\ast}{i^{\prime}}_{\ast}i_{\ast}({h}_n)\in Ext_A^{2,p^nq+(p+1)q+1}(H^{\ast}V(1),\mathbb{Z}_p)$ in the Adams sequence is detected.
In this paper, we study the cohomology of the Morava stabilizer algebra $S(3)$. As an application, we show that for $p \geq 7$, if $s\not \equiv 0, \pm 1 \,\, mod \,p $, $n\not \equiv 1 \,\, mod\, 3$, $n>1$, then $ζ_nγ_s$ is a nontrivial product in $π_*(S)$ by Adams-Novikov spectral sequence, where $ζ_n$ is created by R. Cohen \cite{Co}, $γ_s$ is a third periodic homotopy elements.
The main purpose of this note is to give a proof of the fact that the Toda brackets $<\barν,σ,\barν>$ and $<ν,η, \barσ>$ are not trivial. This is an affirmative answer of the second author's Conjecture (Determination of the $P$-image by Toda brackets, Geometry and Topology Monographs 13(2008), 355-383). The second purpose is to show the relation $\barν_7ω_{15}=ν_7σ_{10}κ_{17}$ in $π^7_{31}$.
