This paper uses a relative of BP-cohomology to prove a theorem in characteristic p algebra. Specifically, we obtain some new necessary conditions for the existence of sums-of-squares formulas over fields of characteristic p > 2. These conditions were previously known in characteristic zero by results of Davis. Our proof uses a generalized etale cohomology theory called etale BP2.
We review the shape theory of $\infty$-topoi, and relate it with the usual cohomology of locally constant sheaves. Additionally, a new localization of profinite spaces is defined which allows us to extend the étale realization functor of Isaksen. We apply these ideas to define an étale homotopy type functor $\mathrm{\acute{e}t}(\mathcal{X})$ for Berkovich's non-archimedean analytic spaces $\mathcal{X}$ over a complete non-archimedean field $K$ and prove some properties of the construction. We compare the étale homotopy types coming from Tate's rigid spaces, Huber's adic spaces, and rigid model…
We compare Friedlander's definition of the etale topological type for simplicial schemes to another definition involving realizations of pro-simplicial sets. This can be expressed as a notion of hypercover descent for etale homotopy. We use this result to construct a homotopy invariant functor from the category of simplicial presheaves on the etale site of schemes over S to the category of pro-spaces. After completing away from the characteristics of the residue fields of S, we get a functor from the Morel-Voevodsky A^1-homotopy category of schemes to the homotopy category of pro-spaces.
An étale homotopy type $T(X, z)$ associated to any pointed locally fibrant connected simplicial sheaf $(X, z)$ on a pointed locally connected small Grothendieck site $(\mc{C}, x)$ is studied. It is shown that this type $T(X, z)$ specializes to the étale homotopy type of Artin-Mazur for pointed connected schemes $X$, that it is invariant up to pro-isomorphism under pointed local weak equivalences (but see \cite{Schmidt1} for an earlier proof), and that it recovers abelian and nonabelian sheaf cohomology of $X$ with constant coefficients. This type $T(X, z)$ is compared to the étale homotopy typ…
Using the machinery of etale homotopy theory a' la Artin-Mazur we determine the etale homotopy types of moduli stacks over $\bar{\Q}$ parametrizing families of algebraic curves of genus g greater than 1 endowed with an action of a finite group G of automorphisms, which comes with a fixed embedding in the mapping class group, such that in the associated complex analytic situation the action of G is precisely the differentiable action induced by this specified embedding of G in the mapping class group.
Anabelian geometry with etale homotopy types generalizes in a natural way classical anabelian geometry with etale fundamental groups. We show that, both in the classical and the generalized sense, any point of a smooth variety over a field k which is finitely generated over Q has a fundamental system of (affine) anabelian Zariski-neighbourhoods. This was predicted by Grothendieck in his letter to Faltings.
Let X be a Noetherian scheme of finite dimension and denote by rho the (additive inverse of the) morphism in SH(X) from S to Gm corresponding to the unit -1. Here SH(X) denotes the motivic stable homotopy category. We show that the category obtained by inverting rho in SH(X) is canonically equivalent to the (simplicial) local stable homotopy category of the site X_ret, by which we mean the small real etale site of X, comprised of etale schemes over X with the real etale topology. One immediate application is that SH(RR)[rho^-1] is equivalent to the classical stable homotopy category. In partic…
In this work we shall introduce a new model structure on the category of pro-simplicial sheaves, which is very convenient for the study of étale homotopy. Using this model structure we define a pro-space associated to a topos, as a result of applying a derived functor. We show that our construction lifts Artin and Mazur's étale homotopy type [AM] in the relevant special case. Our definition extends naturally to a relative notion, namely, a pro-object associated to a map of topoi. This relative notion lifts the relative étale homotopy type that was used in [HaSc] for the study of obstructions t…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field, $l\neq\operatorname{char} k$ a prime number, and $X$ a quasi-projective scheme over $k$. We show that the étale homotopy type of the $d$th symmetric power of $X$ is $\mathbb Z/l$-homologically equivalent to the $d$th strict symmetric power of the étale homotopy type of $X$. We deduce that the $\mathbb Z/l$-local étale homotopy type of a motivic Eilenberg-Mac Lane space is an ordinary Eilenberg-Mac Lane space.
We show that the existence of rational points on smooth varieties over a field can be detected using homotopy fixed points of etale topological types under the Galois action. As our main example we show that the surjectivity statement in Grothendieck's Section Conjecture would follow from the surjectivity of the map from fixed points to continuous homotopy fixed points on the level of connected components. Along the way we define a new model for the continuous etale homotopy fixed point space of a smooth variety over a field under the Galois action.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of exponential characteristic $p$. Given any prime $\ell\neq p$, we construct a stable étale realization functor $$\underline{\text{Ét}}_{\ell}:\text{Spt}(k)\rightarrow \text{Pro}(\text{Spt})^{H\mathbb{Z}/\ell}$$ from the stable $\infty$-category of motivic $\mathbb{P}^1$-spectra over $k$ to the stable $\infty$-category of $(H\mathbb{Z}/\ell)^*$-local pro-spectra (see section 3 for definition). This is induced by the étale topological realization functor á la Friedlander. The constant presheaf functor naturally induces the functor \[\text{SH}[1/p]\right…
This short note regards an observation about the recent theory of prismatic cohomology developed by Bhatt and Scholze. In particular, by applying a functor of Mandell, we see that the étale comparison theorem in the prismatic theory reproduces the $p$-adic homotopy type for a smooth proper complex variety with good reduction mod $p$.
We show, up to h-cobordism, that the existence and uniqueness of connected sum decompositions of oriented 4-dimensional manifolds is an invariant of homotopy equivalence, assuming that the fundamental group of each summand is "good" in the sense of Freedman and Quinn. On a separate note, we observe that the Borel Conjecture is true in dimension 4 up to s-cobordism, assuming that the fundamental group satisfies the Farrell--Jones Conjecture.
In this paper we give a formula for the homotopy groups of $(n-1)$-connected $2n$-manifolds as a direct sum of homotopy groups of spheres in the case the $n^{th}$ Betti number is larger than $1$. We demonstrate that when the $n^{th}$ Betti number is $1$ the homotopy groups might not have such a decomposition. The techniques used in this computation also yield formulae for homotopy groups of connected sums of sphere products and CW complexes of a similar type. In all the families of spaces considered here, we establish a conjecture of J. C. Moore.
The topological complexity ${\sf TC}(X)$ is a homotopy invariant of a topological space $X$, motivated by robotics, and providing a measure of the navigational complexity of $X$. The topological complexity of a connected sum of real projective planes, that is, a high genus nonorientable surface, is known to be maximal. We use algebraic tools to show that the analogous result holds for connected sums of higher dimensional real projective spaces.
Given a closed, smooth, connected, orientable $4$-manifold $M$, whose integral homology groups can have $2$-torsion, we determine the homotopy decomposition of the double suspension $Σ^2M$ as wedge sums of some elementary $\mathbf{A}_3^3$-complexes, which are $2$-connected finite complexes of dimension at most $6$. Furthermore, we utilize the Postnikov square (or equivalently Pontryagin square) to find sufficient conditions for the homotopy decompositions of $Σ^2M$ to desuspend to that of $ΣM$.
We introduce the notion of a logical model category which is a Quillen model category satisfying some additional conditions. Those conditions provide enough expressive power that one can soundly interpret dependent products and sums in it. On the other hand, those conditions are easy to check and provide a wide class of models some of which are listed in the paper.
We present an infinite family of recursive formulas that count binary integer partitions satisfying natural divisibility conditions and show that these counts are interrelated via partial sums. Moreover, we interpret the partitions we study in the language of graded polynomial rings and apply this to the mod $2$ Steenrod algebra to compute the free rank of certain homology modules in stable homotopy theory.
Let X be a noetherian scheme of finite Krull dimension, having 2 invertible in its ring of regular functions, an ample family of line bundles, and a global bound on the virtual mod-2 cohomological dimensions of its residue fields. We prove that the comparison map from the hermitian K-theory of X to the homotopy fixed points of K-theory under the natural Z/2-action is a 2-adic equivalence in general, and an integral equivalence when X has no formally real residue field. We also show that the comparison map between the higher Grothendieck-Witt (hermitian K-) theory of X and its étale version is …
We investigate several interrelated foundational questions pertaining to the study of motivic dga's of Dan-Cohen--Schlank [8] and Iwanari [13]. In particular, we note that morphisms of motivic dga's can reasonably be thought of as a nonabelian analog of motivic cohomology. Just as abelian motivic cohomology is a homotopy group of a spectrum coming from K-theory, the space of morphisms of motivic dga's is a certain limit of such spectra; we give an explicit formula for this limit --- a possible first step towards explicit computations or dimension bounds. We also consider commutative comonoids …
In this paper, we show that the etale index of a torsion cohomological Brauer class is divisible by the period of the class. The tool used to make this computation is the Cech approximation of the title. To create the approximation, we use the folklore theorem that the homotopy limit and Postnikov spectral sequences for a cosimplicial space agree beginning with the E2-page. As far we know, this folklore theorem has no proof in the literature, so we include a proof.
Let T be a torus, X a smooth quasi-compact separated scheme equipped with a T-action, and [X/T] the associated quotient stack. Given any localizing A1-homotopy invariant of dg categories E, we prove that the derived completion of E([X/T]) at the augmentation ideal I of the representation ring R(T) of T agrees with the Borel construction associated to the T-action on X. Moreover, for certain localizing A1-homotopy invariants, we extend this result to the case of a linearly reductive group scheme G. As a first application, we obtain an alternative proof of Krishna's completion theorem in algebra…
We prove that the homotopy theory of Joyal's tribes is equivalent to that of fibration categories. As a consequence, we deduce a variant of the conjecture asserting that Martin-Löf Type Theory with dependent sums and intensional identity types is the internal language of $(\infty, 1)$-categories with finite limits.
