On the homotopy of Q(3) and Q(5) at the prime 2

We study modular approximations Q(l), l = 3,5, of the K(2)-local sphere at the prime 2 that arise from l-power degree isogenies of elliptic curves. We develop Hopf algebroid level tools for working with Q(l) and record Hill, Hopkins, and Ravenel's computation of the homotopy groups of TMF_0(5). Using these tools and formulas of Mahowald and Rezk for Q(3) we determine the image of Shimomura's 2-primary divided beta-family in the Adams-Novikov spectral sequences for Q(3) and Q(5). Cohomology of braids, principal congruence subgroups and geometric representations

The main purpose of this article is to give the integral cohomology of classical principal congruence subgroups in SL(2,Z) as well as their analogues in the third braid group with local coefficients in symmetric powers of the natural symplectic representation. The resulting answers (1) correspond to certain modular forms in characteristic zero, and (2) the cohomology of certain spaces in homotopy theory in characteristic p. The beta family at the prime two and modular forms of level three

We use the orientation underlying the Hirzebruch genus of level three to map the beta family at the prime p=2 into the ring of divided congruences. This procedure, which may be thought of as the elliptic greek letter beta construction, yields the f-invariants of this family.

On the f-invariant of products

The f-invariant is a higher version of the e-invariant that takes values in the divided congruences between modular forms; in the situation of a cartesian product of two framed manifolds, the f-invariant can actually be computed from the e-invariants of the factors. The purpose of this note is to determine the f-invariant of all such products.

On H-Spaces and a Congruence of Catalan Numbers

For $p$ an odd prime and $F$ the cyclic group of order $p$, we show that the number of conjugacy classes of embeddings of $F$ in $SU(p)$ such that no element of $F$ has 1 as an eigenvalue is $(1+C_{p-1})/p$, where $C_{p-1}$ is a Catalan number. We prove that the only coset space $SU(p)/F$ that admits a $p$-local $H$-structure is the classical Lie group $PSU(p)$. We also show that $SU(4)/\mathbb Z_3$, where $\mathbb Z_3$ is embedded off the center of $SU(4)$, is a novel example of an $H$-space, even globally. We apply our results to the study of homotopy classes of maps from $BF$ to $BSU(n)$.

On the geometry of the f-invariant

The f-invariant is a higher version of the e-invariant that takes values in the divided congruences between modular forms; it can be formulated as an elliptic genus of manifolds with corners of codimension two. In this thesis, we develop a geometrical interpretation of the f-invariant in terms of index theory, thereby providing an analytical link between the stable homotopy groups of the spheres and the arithmetic of modular forms.
