Let $Γ$ be a finite group. Consider the wreath product $G_n := Γ^n \rtimes S_n$ and the subgroup $K_n := Δ_n \times S_n\subseteq G_n$, where $S_n$ is the symmetric group and $Δ_n$ is the diagonal subgroup of $Γ^n$. For certain values of $n$ (which depend on the group $Γ$), the pair $(G_n, K_n)$ is a Gelfand pair. It is not known for all finite groups which values of $n$ result in Gelfand pairs. Building off the work of Benson--Ratcliff, we obtain a result which simplifies the computation of multiplicities of irreducible representations in certain tensor product representations, then apply this result to show that for $Γ= S_k, \ k \geq 5$, $(G_n,K_n)$ is a Gelfand pair exactly when $n = 1,2$.
In this paper, we show almost-Gelfand property of connected symmetric pairs (G, H) over finite fields of large characteristics. We will show almost-σ-invariant property of double coset H\G/H where σis the associated anti-involution, and ε-version of Gelfand's trick to make use of the fixed points of anti-involution.
Inspired by the results of [R. Adin, A. Postnikov, Y. Roichman, Combinatorial Gelfand model, preprint math.RT arXiv:0709.3962], we propose combinatorial Gelfand models for semigroup algebras of some finite semigroups, which include the symmetric inverse semigroup, the dual symmetric inverse semigroup, the maximal factorizable subsemigroup in the dual symmetric inverse semigroup, and the factor power of the symmetric group. Furthermore we extend the Gelfand model for the semigroup algebras of the symmetric inverse semigroup to a Gelfand model for the $q$-rook monoid algebra.
Young's orthogonal basis is a classical basis for an irreducible representation of a symmetric group. This basis happens to be a Gelfand-Tsetlin basis for the chain of symmetric groups. It is well-known that the chain of alternating groups, just like the chain of symmetric groups, has multiplicity-free restrictions for irreducible representations. Therefore each irreducible representation of an alternating group also admits Gelfand-Tsetlin bases. Moreover, each such representation is either the restriction of, or a subrepresentation of, the restriction of an irreducible representation of a sym…
A symmetric pair of reductive groups $(G,H,θ)$ is called stable, if every closed double coset of $H$ in $G$ is preserved by the anti-involution $g\mapsto θ(g^{-1})$. In this paper, we develop a method to verify the stability of symmetric pairs over local fields of characteristic 0 (Archimedean and $p$-adic), using non-abelian group cohomology. Combining our method with results of Aizenbud and Gourevitch, we classify the Gelfand pairs among the pairs \begin{align*} &(SL_n(F), (GL_k(F) \times GL_{n - k}(F)) \cap SL_n(F)), (U(B_1 \oplus B_2),U(B_1) \times U(B_2)),\\ &(GL_n(F),O(B)), (GL_n(F),U(B)…
In [AG2] we explored the question what symmetric pairs are Gelfand pairs. We introduced the notion of regular symmetric pair and conjectured that all symmetric pairs are regular. This conjecture would imply that many symmetric pairs are Gelfand pairs, and in particular that any connected symmetric pair over C is a Gelfand pair. In this paper we show that the pairs $$(GL(V),O(V)), (GL(V),U(V)), (U(V),O(V)), (O(V \oplus W),O(V) \times O(W)), (U(V \oplus W),U(V) \times U(W))$$ are regular where V and W are quadratic or hermitian spaces over arbitrary local field of characteristic zero. We deduce …
We study invariant distributions on the tangent space to a symmetric space. We prove that an invariant distribution with the property that both its support and the support of its Fourier transform are contained in the set of non-distinguished nilpotent orbits, must vanish. We deduce, using recent developments in the theory of invariant distributions on symmetric spaces that the symmetric pair (GL(2n,R),Sp(2n,R)) is a Gelfand pair. More precisely, we show that for any irreducible smooth admissible Frechet representation $(π,E)$ of GL(2n,R) the space of continuous functionals $Hom_{Sp_{2n}(R)}(E…
A Gelfand model for a semisimple algebra A over C is a complex linear representation that contains each irreducible representation of A with multiplicity exactly one. We give a method of constructing these models that works uniformly for a large class of semisimple, combinatorial diagram algebras including: the partition, Brauer, rook monoid, rook-Brauer, Temperley-Lieb, Motzkin, and planar rook monoid algebras. In each case, the model representation is given by diagrams acting via "signed conjugation" on the linear span of their vertically symmetric diagrams. This representation is a generali…
If a partition $λ$ of size n is chosen randomly according to the Plancherel measure $P_n[λ] = (\dim λ)^2/n!$, then as n goes to infinity, the rescaled shape of $λ$ is with high probability very close to a non-random continuous curve $Ω$ known as the Logan-Shepp-Kerov-Vershik curve. Moreover, the rescaled deviation of $λ$ from this limit shape can be described by an explicit generalized gaussian process. In this paper, we investigate the analoguous problem when $λ$ is chosen with probability proportional to $\dim λ$ instead of $(\dim λ)^2$. We shall use very general arguments due to Ivanov and …
In [F. Caselli, Involutory reflection groups and their models, J. Algebra 24 (2010), 370--393] it is constructed a uniform Gelfand model for all non-exceptional irreducible complex reflection groups which are involutory. This model can be naturally decomposed into the direct sum of submodules indexed by symmetric conjugacy classes, and in this paper we present a simple combinatorial description of the irreducible decomposition of these submodules if the group is the wreath product of a cyclic group with a symmetric group. This is attained by showing that such decomposition is compatible with t…
In a recent preprint Kodiyalam and Verma give a particularly simple Gelfand model for the symmetric group that is built naturally on the space of involutions. In this manuscript we give a natural extension of Kodiyalam and Verma's model to a Gelfand model for Weyl groups of type B_{n} and D_{2n+1}. Then we define an explicit isomorphism between this Gelfand model and the polynomial model using a technique that we call telescopic decomposition.
Gelfand-Graev characters and their degenerate counterparts have an important role in the representation theory of finite groups of Lie type. Using a characteristic map to translate the character theory of the finite unitary groups into the language of symmetric functions, we study degenerate Gelfand-Graev characters of the finite unitary group from a combinatorial point of view. In particular, we give the values of Gelfand-Graev characters at arbitrary elements, recover the decomposition multiplicities of degenerate Gelfand-Graev characters in terms of tableau combinatorics, and conclude with …
The paper deals with the z-measures on partitions with the deformation (Jack) parameters 2 or 1/2. We provide a detailed explanation of the representation-theoretic origin of these measures, and of their role in the harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group.
The Gelfand-Tsetlin graph is an infinite graded graph that encodes branching of irreducible characters of the unitary groups. The boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph has at least three incarnations --- as a discrete potential theory boundary, as the set of finite indecomposable characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group, and as the set of doubly infinite totally positive sequences. An old deep result due to Albert Edrei and Dan Voiculescu provides an explicit description of the boundary; it can be realized as a region in an infinite-dimensional coordinate space. The paper contains …
In this paper we introduce an intrinsic version of the classical induction of representations for a subgroup $H$ of a (finite) group $G$, called here {\em geometric induction}, which associates to any, not necessarily transitive, $G$-set $X$ and any representation of the action groupoid $A(G,X)$ associated to $G$ and $X$, a representation of the group $G$. We show that geometric induction, applied to one dimensional characters of the action groupoid of a suitable $G$-set $X$ affords a Gelfand Model for $G$ in the case where $G$ is either the symmetric group or the projective general linear gro…

The symmetric group $S_{2n}$ and the hyperoctaheadral group $H_{n}$ is a Gelfand triple for an arbitrary linear representation $ϕ$ of $H_{n}$. Their $ϕ$-spherical functions can be caught as transition matrix between suitable symmetric functions and the power sums. We generalize this triplet in the term of wreath product. It is shown that our triplet are always to be a Gelfand triple. Furthermore we study the relation between their spherical functions and multi-partition version of the ring of symmetric functions.
Macdonald polynomials are an important class of symmetric functions, with connections to many different fields. Etingof and Kirillov showed an intimate connection between these functions and representation theory: they proved that Macdonald polynomials arise as (suitably normalized) vector-valued characters of irreducible representations of quantum groups. In this paper, we provide a branching rule for these characters. The coefficients are expressed in terms of skew Macdonald polynomials with plethystic substitutions. We use our branching rule to give an expansion of the characters with respe…
It is shown that the q-difference Noether problem for all classical Weyl groups has a positive solution, simultaneously generalizing well known results on multisymmetric functions of Mattuck and Miyata in the case q=1, and q-deforming the noncommutative Noether problem for the symmetric group. It is also shown that the quantum Gelfand-Kirillov conjecture for gl_N (for a generic q) follows from the positive solution of the q-difference Noether problem for the Weyl group of type D_n. The proof is based on the theory of Galois rings developed by the first author and Ovsienko. From here we obtain …
We introduce families of maximal commutative subalgebras, called Bethe subalgebras, of the group algebra of the symmetric group. Bethe subalgebras are deformations of the Gelfand-Zetlin subalgebra. We describe various properties of Bethe subalgebras.
We generalize the famous weight basis constructions of the finite-dimensional irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{C})$ obtained by Gelfand and Tsetlin in 1950. Using combinatorial methods, we construct one such basis for each finite-dimensional representation of $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{C})$ associated to a given skew Schur function. Our constructions use diamond-colored distributive lattices of skew-shaped semistandard tableaux that generalize some classical Gelfand--Tsetlin (GT) lattices. Our constructions take place within the context of a certain programmatic study of p…
In the first part of the paper we generalize a descent technique due to Harish-Chandra to the case of a reductive group acting on a smooth affine variety both defined over arbitrary local field F of characteristic zero. Our main tool is Luna slice theorem. In the second part of the paper we apply this technique to symmetric pairs. In particular we prove that the pair (GL(n,C),GL(n,R)) is a Gelfand pair. We also prove that any conjugation invariant distribution on GL(n,F) is invariant with respect to transposition. For non-archimedean F the later is a classical theorem of Gelfand and Kazhdan. W…
In the first part of the paper we generalize a descent technique due to Harish-Chandra to the case of a reductive group acting on a smooth affine variety both defined over an arbitrary local field F of characteristic zero. Our main tool is the Luna Slice Theorem. In the second part of the paper we apply this technique to symmetric pairs. In particular we prove that the pairs (GL(n+k,F), GL(n,F) x GL(k,F)) and (GL(n,E), GL(n,F)) are Gelfand pairs for any local field F and its quadratic extension E. In the non-Archimedean case, the first result was proven earlier by Jacquet and Rallis and the se…
In this note we describe a seemingly new approach to the complex representation theory of the wreath product $G\wr S_d$ where $G$ is a finite abelian group. The approach is motivated by an appropriate version of Schur-Weyl duality. We construct a combinatorially defined groupoid in which all endomorphism algebras are direct products of symmetric groups and prove that the groupoid algebra is isomorphic to the group algebra of $G\wr S_d$. This directly implies a classification of simple modules. As an application, we get a Gelfand model for $G\wr S_d$ from the classical involutive Gelfand model …
We present a method to obtain infinitely many examples of pairs $(W,D)$ consisting of a matrix weight $W$ in one variable and a symmetric second-order differential operator $D$. The method is based on a uniform construction of matrix valued polynomials starting from compact Gelfand pairs $(G,K)$ of rank one and a suitable irreducible $K$-representation. The heart of the construction is the existence of a suitable base change $Ψ_{0}$. We analyze the base change and derive several properties. The most important one is that $Ψ_{0}$ satisfies a first-order differential equation which enables us to…
In this paper, we study harmonic analysis on finite homogeneous spaces whose associated permutation representation decomposes with multiplicity. After a careful look at Frobenius reciprocity and transitivity of induction, and the introduction of three types of spherical functions, we develop a theory of Gelfand Tsetlin bases for permutation representations. Then we study several concrete examples on the symmetric groups, generalizing the Gelfand pair of the Johnson scheme; we also consider statistical and probabilistic applications. After that, we consider the composition of two permutation re…
We define a class of quantum linear Galois algebras which include the universal enveloping algebra Uq(gln), the quantum Heisenberg Lie algebra and other quantum orthogonal Gelfand-Zetlin algebras of type A, the subalgebras of G-invariants of the quantum affine space, quantum torus for G = G(m, p, n), and of the quantum Weyl algebra for G = Sn. We show that all quantum linear Galois algebras satisfy the quantum Gelfand-Kirillov conjecture. Moreover, it is shown that the the subalgebras of invariants of the quantum affine space and of quantum torus for the reflection groups and of the quantum We…
We study the combinatorial structure of the irreducible characters of the classical groups ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm SO}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and the "non-classical" odd symplectic group ${\rm Sp}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, finding new connections to the probabilistic model of Last Passage Percolation (LPP). Perturbing the expressions of these characters as generating functions of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, we produce two families of symmetric polynomials that interpolate between characters of ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and ${\rm SO}_{2n…
In this paper we prove that the symmetric pair $(GL_{n+k}(F),GL_n(F) \times GL_k(F))$ is a Gelfand pair for any local field F of characteristic 0. For non-archimedean F it has been proven in [JR]. We use techniques developed in [AG2] to generalize their proof to general local fields.
We deduce decompositions of natural representations of general linear groups and symmetric groups from combinatorial bijections involving tableaux. These include some of Howe's dualities, Gelfand models, the Schur-Weyl decomposition of tensor space, and multiplicity-free decompositions indexed by threshold partitions.
The complex analytic methods have found a wide range of applications in the study of multiplicity-free representations. This article discusses, in particular, its applications to the question of restricting highest weight modules with respect to reductive symmetric pairs. We present a number of multiplicity-free branching theorems that include the multiplicity-free property of some of known results such as the Clebsh--Gordan--Pieri formula for tensor products, the Plancherel theorem for Hermitian symmetric spaces (also for line bundle cases), the Hua--Kostant--Schmid $K$-type formula, and the …
The new approach to the theory of complex representrations of the finite symmetric groups which based on the notions of Coxeter generators., Gelfand-Zetlin algebras, Hecke algebra, Young-Jucys-Murphi generators and which hardly used inductive structure - is systematically developed. The appearence of Young diagrams, tables is naturally explained - the set of content vectors of all Young tables is the spectra of Gel'fand-Zetlin algebra. The first steps of the theory (the list of the irrediucible representatinos, branching rule, Young orthopgonal form, Murnagan-Nakayama rule etc.)are established…
In this thesis, we investigate the asymptotics of random partitions chosen according to probability measures coming from the representation theory of the symmetric groups $S_n$ and of the finite Chevalley groups $GL(n,F_q)$ and $Sp(2n,F_q)$. More precisely, we prove laws of large numbers and central limit theorems for the $q$-Plancherel measures of type A and B, the Schur-Weyl measures and the Gelfand measures. Using the RSK algorithm, it also gives results on longest increasing subsequences in random words. We develop a technique of moments (and cumulants) for random partitions, thereby using…
Stein's method is used to prove limit theorems for random character ratios. Tools are developed for four types of structures: finite groups, Gelfand pairs, twisted Gelfand pairs, and association schemes. As one example an error term is obtained for a central limit theorem of Kerov on the spectrum of the Cayley graph of the symmetric group generated by i-cycles, or equivalently for the character ratio of a Plancherel distributed representation on an i-cycle. Other main examples include an error term for a central limit theorem of Ivanov on character ratios of random projective representations o…
Let S be the group of finite permutations of the naturals 1,2,... The subject of the paper is harmonic analysis for the Gelfand pair (G,K), where G stands for the product of two copies of S while K is the diagonal subgroup in G. The spherical dual to (G,K) (that is, the set of irreducible spherical unitary representations) is an infinite-dimensional space. For such Gelfand pairs, the conventional scheme of harmonic analysis is not applicable and it has to be suitably modified. We construct a compactification of S called the space of virtual permutations. It is no longer a group but it is still…
We extend the classical Schur-Weyl duality between representations of the groups $SL(n,\C)$ and $\sN$ to the case of $SL(n,\C)$ and the infinite symmetric group $\sinf$. Our construction is based on a "dynamic," or inductive, scheme of Schur-Weyl dualities. It leads to a new class of representations of the infinite symmetric group, which have not appeared earlier. We describe these representations and, in particular, find their spectral types with respect to the Gelfand-Tsetlin algebra. The main example of such a representation acts in an incomplete infinite tensor product. As an important app…
The partition algebra is an associative algebra with a basis of set-partition diagrams and multiplication given by diagram concatenation. It contains as subalgebras a large class of diagram algebras including the Brauer, planar partition, rook monoid, rook-Brauer, Temperley-Lieb, Motzkin, planar rook monoid, and symmetric group algebras. We give a construction of the irreducible modules of these algebras in two isomorphic ways: first, as the span of symmetric diagrams on which the algebra acts by conjugation twisted with an irreducible symmetric group representation and, second, on a basis ind…
Let $G$ be a finite subgroup of the linear group of a finite-dimensional complex vector $V$, $B={\operatorname S}(V)$ be the symmetric algebra, ${\mathcal D}=\mathcal D^G_B$ the ring of $G$-invariant differential operators, and ${\mathcal D}^-$ its subring of negative degree operators. We prove that $M\mapsto M^{ann}= {\operatorname Ann}_{\mathcal D^-}(M)$ defines an isomorphism between the category of ${\mathcal D}$-submodules of $B$ and a category of modules formed as lowest weight spaces. This is applied to a construction of simple ${\mathcal D}$-submodules of $B$ when $G$ is a generalized …
We initiate a new line of investigation on branching problems for generalized Verma modules with respect to complex reductive symmetric pairs (g,k). Here we note that Verma modules of g may not contain any simple module when restricted to a reductive subalgebra k in general. In this article, using the geometry of K_C orbits on the generalized flag variety G_C/P_C, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on the triple (g,k, p) such that the restriction X|_k always contains simple k-modules for any g-module $X$ lying in the parabolic BGG category O^p attached to a parabolic subalgebra p of …
A known result for the finite general linear group $\GL(n,\FF_q)$ and for the finite unitary group $\U(n,\FF_{q^2})$ posits that the sum of the irreducible character degrees is equal to the number of symmetric matrices in the group. Fulman and Guralnick extended this result by considering sums of irreducible characters evaluated at an arbitrary conjugacy class of $\GL(n,\FF_q)$. We develop an explicit formula for the value of the permutation character of $\U(2n,\FF_{q^2})$ over $\Sp(2n,\FF_q)$ evaluated an an arbitrary conjugacy class and use results concerning Gelfand-Graev characters to obta…
(Abridged abstract) For a finite real reflection group W and a W-orbit O of flats in its reflection arrangement---or equivalently a conjugacy class of its parabolic subgroups---we introduce a statistic on elements of W. We then study the operator of right-multiplication within the group algebra of W by the element whose coefficients are given by this statistic. We reinterpret the operators geometrically in terms of the arrangement of reflecting hyperplanes for W. We show that they are self-adjoint and positive semidefinite. via two explicit factorizations into a symmetrized form A^t A. In one …
