Gelfand-Graev characters and their degenerate counterparts have an important role in the representation theory of finite groups of Lie type. Using a characteristic map to translate the character theory of the finite unitary groups into the language of symmetric functions, we study degenerate Gelfand-Graev characters of the finite unitary group from a combinatorial point of view. In particular, we give the values of Gelfand-Graev characters at arbitrary elements, recover the decomposition multiplicities of degenerate Gelfand-Graev characters in terms of tableau combinatorics, and conclude with some multiplicity consequences.
Introduced by Kawanaka in order to find the unipotent representations of finite groups of Lie type, generalized Gelfand--Graev characters have remained somewhat mysterious. Even in the case of the finite general linear groups, the combinatorics of their decompositions has not been worked out. This paper re-interprets Kawanaka's definition in type $A$ in a way that gives far more flexibility in computations. We use these alternate constructions to show how to obtain generalized Gelfand--Graev representations directly from the maximal unipotent subgroups. We also explicitly decompose the corresp…
We study the endomorphism algebras of a modular Gelfand-Graev representation of a finite reductive group by investigating modular properties of homomorphisms constructed by Curtis and Curtis-Shoji.
We consider the analog of Gelfand-Graev representations of the uniteriangular group. We obtain the decomposition into the sum of irreducible representations, prove that these representations are multiplicity free, calculate the Hecke algebra.}
Let $G$ be a $p$-adic classical group. The representations in a given Bernstein component can be viewed as modules for the corresponding Hecke algebra---the endomorphism algebra of a pro-generator of the given component. Using Heiermann's construction of these algebras, we describe the Bernstein components of the Gelfand--Graev representation for $G=$SO$(2n+1)$.
Using Deodhar's decomposition of a double Schubert cell, we study the regular representations of finite groups of Lie type arising in the cohomology of Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated to tori. We deduce that the Deligne-Lusztig restriction of a Gelfand-Graev module is a shifted Gelfand-Graev module.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over a finite field with $q$ elements. In the 1980's, Kawanaka introduced generalised Gelfand-Graev representations of the finite group $G(F_q)$, assuming that $q$ is a power of a good prime for $G$. These representations have turned out to be extremely useful in various contexts. Here we investigate to what extent Kawanaka's construction can be carried out when we drop the assumptions on~$q$. As a curious by-product, we obtain a new, conjectural characterisation of Lusztig's concept of special unipotent classes of $G$ in terms of weight…
For a connected reductive group $G$ defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and equipped with the induced Frobenius endomorphism $F$, we study the relation among the following three $\mathbb{Z}$-algebras: (i) the $\mathbb{Z}$-model $\mathsf{E}_G$ of endomorphism algebras of Gelfand-Graev representations of $G^F$; (ii) the Grothendieck group $\mathsf{K}_{G^\ast}$ of the category of representations of $G^{\ast F^\ast}$ over $\overline{\mathbb{F}_q}$ (Deligne-Lusztig dual side); (iii) the ring $\mathsf{B}_{G^\vee}$ of the scheme $(T^\vee/\!\!/ W)^{F^\vee}$ over $\mathbb{Z}$ (Langlands dual side). The compari…
We study the Iwahori-component of the Gelfand-Graev representation of a central cover of a split linear reductive group and utilize our results for three applications. In fact, it is advantageous to begin at the pro-$p$ level. Thus to begin we study the structure of a genuine pro-$p$ Iwahori-Hecke algebra, establishing Iwahori-Matsumoto and Bernstein presentations. With this structure theory we first describe the pro-$p$ part of the Gelfand-Graev representation and then the more subtle Iwahori part. For the first application we relate the Gelfand-Graev representation to the metaplectic represe…
Let G be a complex semisimple group and U its maximal unipotent subgroup. We study the algebra D(G/U) of algebraic differential operators on G/U and also its quasi-classical counterpart: the algebra of regular functions on the cotangent bundle. A long time ago, Gelfand and Graev have constructed an action of the Weyl group on D(G/U) by algebra automorphisms. The Gelfand-Graev construction was not algebraic, it involved analytic methods in an essential way. We give a new algebraic construction of the Gelfand-Graev action, as well as its quasi-classical counterpart. Our approach is based on Hami…
We construct a Weyl group action on the DKS type varieties, a certain class of varieties associated with quivers. As a result, on some special DKS type varieties, we can give a quiver theoretic explanation of the quasi-classical Gelfand-Graev action discovered by Ginzburg and Riche and studied by Ginzburg and Kazhdan recently.
For a connected reductive algebraic group $G$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$, Kawanaka introduced the generalized Gelfand-Graev representations (GGGRs for short) of the finite group $G(\mathbb F_q)$ in the case where $q$ is a power of a good prime for $G$. This representation has been widely studied and used in various contexts. Recently, Geck proposed a conjecture, characterizing Lusztig's special unipotent classes in terms of weighted Dynkin diagrams. Based on this conjecture, he gave a guideline for extending the definition of GGGRs to the case where $q$ is a power of a bad prime…
Let $G$ be a finite reductive group defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$, with $q$ a power of a prime $p$. Motivated by a problem recently posed by C. Curtis, we first develop an algorithm to express each element of $G$ into a canonical form in terms of a refinement of a Bruhat decomposition, and we then use the output of the algorithm to explicitly determine the structure constants of the endomorphism algebra of a Gelfand-Graev representation of $G$ when $G=\mathrm{PGL}_3(q)$ for an arbitrary prime $p$, and when $G=\mathrm{SO}_5(q)$ for $p$ odd.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over the finite field $\F_q$, where $q$ is a power of a good prime for $G$, and let $F$ denote the corresponding Frobenius endomorphism, so that $G^F$ is a finite reductive group. Let $u \in G^F$ be a unipotent element and let $Γ_u$ be the associated generalised Gelfand-Graev representation of $G^F$. Under the assumption that $G$ has a connected centre, we show that the dimension of the endomorphism algebra of $Γ_u$ is a polynomial in $q$, with degree given by $\dim C_G(u)$. When the centre of $G$ is disconnected, it is impossible, in ge…
For the quantum algebra U_q(gl(n+1)) in its reduction on the subalgebra U_q(gl(n)) an explicit description of a Mickelsson-Zhelobenko reduction Z-algebra Z_q(gl(n+1),gl(n)) is given in terms of the generators and their defining relations. Using this Z-algebra we describe Hermitian irreducible representations of a discrete series for the noncompact quantum algebra U_q(u(n,1)) which is a real form of U_q(gl(n+1)), namely, an orthonormal Gelfand-Graev basis is constructed in an explicit form.
Let $\mathbf{G}$ be a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraic closure $\overline{\mathbb{F}_p}$ of the finite field of prime order $p$ and let $F : \mathbf{G} \to \mathbf{G}$ be a Frobenius endomorphism with $G = \mathbf{G}^F$ the corresponding $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational structure. One of the strongest links we have between the representation theory of $G$ and the geometry of the unipotent conjugacy classes of $\mathbf{G}$ is a formula, due to Lusztig, which decomposes Kawanaka's Generalised Gelfand-Graev Representations (GGGRs) in terms of characteristic functions of intersection c…
Let $F$ be a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic 0 with residual characteristic $p$ and let $\ell$ be an odd prime with $2\ell<p$. We establish and explicitly compute the local stable transfer factor $Θ_ϕ$ in the sense of \cite{SetT} associated to a natural $L$-embedding $ϕ:{^LT}\to{^LG}$ for $G=\text{SL}_\ell$ for $\ell$ an odd prime and $T\subset G$ a maximal unramified elliptic torus defined over $F$. We also explicitly compute the associated stable transfer, answering in the affirmative the Questions A and B of \cite{SetT}. We do the same, explicitly computing the stable transfer …
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group defined over a non-archimedean local field $F$. Let $B$ be a minimal $F$-parabolic subgroup with Levi factor $T$ and unipotent radical $U$. Let $ψ$ be a non-degenerate character of $U(F)$ and $λ$ a character of $T(F)$. Let $(K,ρ)$ be a Bushnell-Kutzko type associated to the Bernstein block of $G(F)$ determined by the pair $(T,λ)$. We study the $ρ$-isotypical component $(c\text{-ind}_{U(F)}^{G(F)}ψ)^ρ$ of the induced space $c\text{-ind}_{U(F)}^{G(F)}ψ$ of functions compactly supported mod $U(F)$. We show that $(c\text{-ind}_{U(F)}^{G(F)}ψ)^ρ$ is cyclic mod…
We prove a long-standing conjecture of Geck which predicts that cuspidal unipotent characters remain irreducible after $\ell$-reduction. To this end, we construct a progenerator for the category of representations of a finite reductive group coming from generalised Gelfand--Graev representations. This is achieved by showing that cuspidal representations appear in the head of generalised Gelfand--Graev representations attached to cuspidal unipotent classes, as defined and studied in \cite{GM96}.
In this note, we study irreducible unitary representations of special linear groups of lower ranks, in terms of the matrix models of Gelfand-Naimark and Gelfand-Graev. Review of existing literature is provided. We also add some new calculation based on existing theory.
With a view to determining character values of finite reductive groups at unipotent elements, we prove a number of results concerning inner products of generalised Gelfand-Graev characters with characteristic functions of character sheaves, here called Lusztig functions. These are used to determine projections of generalised Gelfand-Graev characters to the space of unipo- tent characters, and to the space of characters with a given wave front set. Such projections are expressed largely in terms of Weyl group data. We show how the values of characters at their unipotent support or wave front se…
In this paper we show, using Deligne-Lusztig theory and Kawanaka's theory of generalised Gelfand-Graev representations, that the decomposition matrix of the special linear and unitary group in non defining characteristic can be made unitriangular with respect to a basic set that is stable under the action of automorphisms.
We introduce an infinite-dimensional affine group and construct its irreducible unitary representation. Our approach follows the one used by Vershik, Gelfand and Graev for the diffeomorphism group, but with modifications made necessary by the fact that the group does not act on the phase space. However it is possible to define its action on some classes of functions.
A known result for the finite general linear group $\GL(n,\FF_q)$ and for the finite unitary group $\U(n,\FF_{q^2})$ posits that the sum of the irreducible character degrees is equal to the number of symmetric matrices in the group. Fulman and Guralnick extended this result by considering sums of irreducible characters evaluated at an arbitrary conjugacy class of $\GL(n,\FF_q)$. We develop an explicit formula for the value of the permutation character of $\U(2n,\FF_{q^2})$ over $\Sp(2n,\FF_q)$ evaluated an an arbitrary conjugacy class and use results concerning Gelfand-Graev characters to obta…
We show that the two cuspidal unipotent characters of a finite Chevalley group $E_7(q)$ have Schur index~2, provided that $q$ is an even power of a (sufficiently large) prime number $p$ such that $p\equiv 1 \bmod 4$. The proof uses a refinement of Kawanaka's generalized Gelfand--Graev representations and some explicit computations with the {\sf CHEVIE} computer algebra system.
We establish a Gelfand-Naimark-Segal construction which yields a correspondence between cyclic unitary representations and positive definite superfunctions of a general class of $\mathbb Z_2^n$-graded Lie supergroups.
The Gelfand-Tsetlin graph is an infinite graded graph that encodes branching of irreducible characters of the unitary groups. The boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph has at least three incarnations --- as a discrete potential theory boundary, as the set of finite indecomposable characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group, and as the set of doubly infinite totally positive sequences. An old deep result due to Albert Edrei and Dan Voiculescu provides an explicit description of the boundary; it can be realized as a region in an infinite-dimensional coordinate space. The paper contains …
As a step to establish the McKay conjecture on character degrees of finite groups, we verify the inductive McKay condition introduced by Isaacs-Malle-Navarro for simple groups of Lie type $A_{n-1}$, split or twisted. Key to the proofs is the study of certain characters of SL$_n(q)$ and SU$_n(q)$ related to generalized Gelfand-Graev representations. As a by-product we can show that a Jordan decomposition for the characters of the latter groups is equivariant under outer automorphisms. Many ideas seem applicable to other Lie types.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over $F_q$, where $q$ is large enough and the center of $G$ is connected. We are concerned with Lusztig's theory of {\em character sheaves}, a geometric version of the classical character theory of the finite group $G(F_q)$. We show that under a certain technical condition, the restriction of a character sheaf to its {\em unipotent support} (as defined by Lusztig) is either zero or an irreducible local system. As an application, the generalized Gelfand-Graev characters are shown to form a $\Z$-basis of the $\Z$-module of unipotently supported virtual char…
We describe the tensor products of two irreducible linear complex representations of the finite general linear group G = GL(3,q) in terms of induced representations by linear characters of maximal torii and also in terms of Gelfand-Graev representations. Our results include MacDonald's conjectures for G and at the same time they are extensions to G of finite counterparts to classical results on tensor products of holomorphic and anti-holomorphic representations of the group SL(2, R). Moreover they provide an easy way to decompose these tensor products, with the help of Frobenius reciprocity. W…
Let $G$ be a finite group isomorphic to $SL_n(q)$ or $SU_n(q)$ for some prime power $q$. In this paper, we give an explicit description of the action of automorphisms of $G$ on the set of its irreducible complex characters. This is done by showing that irreducible constituents of restrictions of irreducible characters of $GL_n(q)$ (resp. $GU_n(q)$) to $SL_n(q)$ (resp. $SU_n(q)$) can be distinguished by the rational classes of their unipotent support which are equivariant under the action of automorphisms. Meanwhile, we give a criterion to explicitly determine whether an irreducible character i…
This article is concerned with the relative McKay conjecture for finite reductive groups. Let G be a connected reductive group defined over the finite field F_q of characteristic p>0 with corresponding Frobenius map F. We prove that if the F-coinvariants of the component group of the center of G has prime order and if p is a good prime for G, then the relative McKay conjecture holds for G at the prime p. In particular, this conjecture is true for G^F in defining characteristic for G a simple and simply-connected group of type B_n, C_n, E_6 and E_7. Our main tools are the theory of Gelfand-Grae…
We prove pairwise disjointness of representations T_{z,w} of the infinite-dimensional unitary group. These representations provide a natural generalization of the regular representation for the case of "big" group U(\infty). They were introduced and studied by G.Olshanski and A.Borodin. Disjointness of the representations can be reduced to disjointness of certain probability measures on the space of paths in the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph. We prove the latter disjointness using probabilistic and combinatorial methods.
The unitary principal series representations of $G=GL(n,\mathbb{C})$ induced from a character of the maximal parabolic subgroup $P=(GL(1,\mathbb{C})\times GL(n-1,\mathbb{C}))\ltimes\mathbb{C}^{n-1}$ attain the minimal Gelfand--Kirillov dimension among all infinite-dimensional unitary representations of $G$. We find the explicit branching laws for the restriction of these representations to symmetric subgroups of $G$.
We study a two-dimensional family of probability measures on infinite Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes induced by a distinguished family of extreme characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group. These measures are unitary group analogs of the well-known Plancherel measures for symmetric groups. We show that any measure from our family defines a determinantal point process, and we prove that in appropriate scaling limits, such processes converge to two different extensions of the discrete sine process as well as to the extended Airy and Pearcey processes.
In this paper, we study the group Fourier transform and the Kohn-Nirenberg quantization for homogeneous Lie groups as mappings between certain Gelfand triples. For this, we restrict our considerations to the case, where the homogeneous Lie group $G$ admits irreducible unitary representations, that are square integrable modulo the center $Z(G)$ of $G$, and where $\dim Z(G)=1$. Replacing the Schwartz space by a certain subspace $\mathcal S_*(G) \hookrightarrow \mathcal S(G)$, we characterise the range of the group Fourier transform on $\mathcal S_*(G)$ and construct distributions and Gelfand tri…
The present work stemmed from the study of the problem of harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(\infty). That problem consisted in the decomposition of a certain 4-parameter family of unitary representations, which replace the nonexisting two-sided regular representation (Olshanski, J. Funct. Anal., 2003, arXiv:0109193). The required decomposition is governed by certain probability measures on an infinite-dimensional space Ω, which is a dual object to U(\infty). A way to describe those measures is to convert them into determinantal point processes on the real line, it t…
Given a nilpotent Lie group $N$, a compact subgroup $K$ of automorphisms of $N$ and an irreducible unitary representation $(τ,W_τ)$ of $K$, we study conditions on $τ$ for the commutativity of the algebra of $\mathrm{End}(W_τ)$-valued integrable functions on $N$, with an additional property that generalizes the notion of $K$-invariance. A necessary condition, proved by F. Ricci and A. Samanta, is that $(K\ltimes N,K)$ must be a Gelfand pair. In this article we determine all the commutative algebras from a particular class of Gelfand pairs constructed by J. Lauret.
We will introduce the notion of inductive limits of compact quantum groups as $W^*$-bialgebras equipped with some additional structures. We also formulate their unitary representation theories. Those give a more explicit representation-theoretic meaning to our previous study of quantized characters associated with a given inductive system of compact quantum groups. As a byproduct, we will give an explicit representation-theoretic interpretation to some transformations that play an important role in the analysis of $q$-central probability measures on the paths in the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph.
Assume $G$ is a connected reductive algebraic group defined over $\bar{\mathbb{F}_p}$ such that $p$ is good prime for $G$. Furthermore we assume that $Z(G)$ is connected and $G/Z(G)$ is simple of classical type. Let $F$ be a Frobenius endomorphism of $G$ admitting an $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational structure $G^F$. This paper is one of a series whose overall goal is to compute explicitly the multiplicity $< D_0745664 {G^F}(Γ_u),χ>$ where: $χ$ is an irreducible character of $G^F$, $D_{G^F}(Γ_u)$ is the Alvis--Curtis dual of a generalised Gelfand--Graev representation of $G^F$ and $u \in G^F$ is contain…
Let $\mathfrak{o}$ be the ring of integers of a non-archimedean local field with the maximal ideal $\wp$ and the finite residue field of characteristic $p.$ Let $\mathbf{G}$ be the General Linear or Special Linear group with entries from the finite quotients $\mathfrak{o}/\wp^\ell$ of $\mathfrak{o}$ and $\mathbf{U}$ be the subgroup of $\mathbf{G}$ consisting of upper triangular unipotent matrices. We prove that the induced representation $\mathrm{Ind}^{\mathbf{G}}_{\mathbf{U}}(θ)$ of $\mathbf{G}$ obtained from a ${\it non-degenerate}$ character $θ$ of $\mathbf{U}$ is multiplicity free for all …
We obtain a complete classification of the continuous unitary representations of oligomorphic permutation groups (those include the infinite permutation group $S_\infty$, the automorphism group of the countable dense linear order, the homeomorphism group of the Cantor space, etc.). Our main result is that all irreducible representations of such groups are obtained by induction from representations of finite quotients of open subgroups and moreover, every representation is a sum of irreducibles. As an application, we prove that many oligomorphic groups have property (T). We also show that the G…
We introduce Jack (unitary) characters and prove two kinds of formulas that are suitable for their asymptotics, as the lengths of the signatures that parametrize them go to infinity. The first kind includes several integral representations for Jack characters of one variable. The second identity we prove is the Pieri integral formula for Jack characters which, in a sense, is dual to the well known Pieri rule for Jack polynomials. The Pieri integral formula can also be seen as a functional equation for irreducible spherical functions of virtual Gelfand pairs. As an application of our formulas, …
The classification results for the extreme characters of two basic "big" groups, the infinite symmetric group S(infinity) and the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity), are remarkably similar. It does not seem to be possible to explain this phenomenon using a suitable extension of the Schur-Weyl duality to infinite dimension. We suggest an explanation of a different nature that does not have analogs in the classical representation theory. We start from the combinatorial/probabilistic approach to characters of "big" groups initiated by Vershik and Kerov. In this approach, the space of …
In \cite{JZ1}, D. Jiang and L. Zhang proposed a conjecture which related the wavefront sets and the descent method in the local fields case. Recently, in \cite{JLZ}, they and D. Liu define the arithmetic wavefront set of certain irreducible admissible representation $π$ of a classical group $G(k)$ defined over local field $k$, which is a subset of $k$-rational nilpotent orbits of the Lie algebra of $G(k)$, by the arithmetic structures of the enhanced L-parameter of $π$. These arithmetic structures are based on the rationality of the local Langlands correspondence and the local Gan-Gross-Prasad…
We propose a natural quantized character theory for inductive systems of compact quantum groups based on KMS states on AF-algebras following Stratila-Voiculescu's work (Stratila-Voiculescu, 1975) (or (Enomoto-Izumi, 2016)), and give its serious investigation when the system consists of quantum unitary groups $U_q(N)$ with $q$ in $(0,1)$. The key features of this work are: The "quantized trace" of a unitary representation of a compact quantum group can be understood as a quantized character associated with the unitary representation and its normalized one is captured as a KMS state with respect…
We construct an L^2-model of "very small" irreducible unitary representations of simple Lie groups G which, up to finite covering, occur as conformal groups Co(V) of simple Jordan algebras V. If $V$ is split and G is not of type A_n, then the representations are minimal in the sense that the annihilators are the Joseph ideals. Our construction allows the case where G does not admit minimal representations. In particular, applying to Jordan algebras of split rank one we obtain the entire complementary series representations of SO(n,1)_0. A distinguished feature of these representations in all c…
