Let $G$ be a finite group isomorphic to $SL_n(q)$ or $SU_n(q)$ for some prime power $q$. In this paper, we give an explicit description of the action of automorphisms of $G$ on the set of its irreducible complex characters. This is done by showing that irreducible constituents of restrictions of irreducible characters of $GL_n(q)$ (resp. $GU_n(q)$) to $SL_n(q)$ (resp. $SU_n(q)$) can be distinguished by the rational classes of their unipotent support which are equivariant under the action of automorphisms. Meanwhile, we give a criterion to explicitly determine whether an irreducible character is a constituent of a given generalized Gelfand-Graev character of $G$. As as application, we give a short proof of the global side of Sp{\" a}th's criterion for the inductive McKay condition for the irreducible characters of $G$.
Assume $G$ is a finite symplectic group $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(q)$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of odd characteristic. We describe the action of the automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(G)$ on the set $\mathrm{Irr}(G)$ of ordinary irreducible characters of $G$. This description relies on the equivariance of Deligne--Lusztig induction with respect to automorphisms. We state a version of this equivariance which gives a precise way to compute the automorphism on the corresponding Levi subgroup; this may be of independent interest. As an application we prove that the global condition in Späth's crite…

We investigate the action of outer automorphisms of finite groups of Lie type on their irreducible characters. We obtain a definite result for cuspidal characters. As an application we verify the inductive McKay condition for some further infinite families of simple groups at certain primes.
An irreducible module for the parafermion vertex operator algebra $K(\mathfrak{sl}_2,k)$ is said to be of $σ$-type if an automorphism of the fusion algebra of $K(\mathfrak{sl}_2,k)$ of order $k$ is trivial on it. For any integer $k \ge 3$, we show that there exists an automorphism of order $2$ of the subalgebra of the fusion algebra of $K(\mathfrak{sl}_2,k)^{\langle θ\rangle}$ spanned by the irreducible direct summands of $σ$-type irreducible $K(\mathfrak{sl}_2,k)$-modules, where $θ$ is an involution of $K(\mathfrak{sl}_2,k)$. We discuss some examples of such an automorphism as well.
We extend the Howlett-Isaacs theorem on the solvability of groups of central type taking into account actions by automorphisms. Then we study certain induced characters whose constituents have all the same degree.
We study the subvariety of fixed points of an automorphism of a Calogero-Moser space induced by a regular element of finite order of the normalizer of the associated complex reflection group $W$. We determine some of (and conjecturally all) the ${\mathbb{C}}^\times$-fixed points of its unique irreducible component of maximal dimension in terms of the character table of $W$. This is inspired by the mysterious relations between the geometry of Calogero-Moser spaces and unipotent representations of finite reductive groups, which will be the theme of a forthcoming paper.
