Let F be a non-archimedean local field of odd residual characteristic. Let G be a (connected) reductive group over F that splits over a tamely ramified field extension of F. We revisit Yu's construction of smooth complex representations of G(F) from a slightly different perspective and provide a proof that the resulting representations are supercuspidal. We also provide a counterexample to Proposition 14.1 and Theorem 14.2 in [Yu01], whose proofs relied on a typo in a reference.
A new approach to Jiu-Kang Yu's construction of tame supercuspidal representations of $p$-adic reductive groups is presented. Connections with the theory of cuspidal Deligne-Lusztig representations of finite groups of Lie type are also discussed.
For a $p$-adic field $F$, the embeddings of a tame supercuspidal representation of $G= {\rm GL}_n (F)$ in the space of smooth functions on the set of symmetric matrices in $G$ are determined.
We combine the ideas of a Harish-Chandra--Howe local character expansion, which can be centred at an arbitrary semisimple element, and a Kim--Murnaghan asymptotic expansion, which so far has been considered only around the identity. We show that, for most smooth, irreducible representations (those containing a good, minimal K-type), Kim--Murnaghan-type asymptotic expansions are valid on explicitly defined neighbourhoods of nearly arbitrary semisimple elements. We then give an explicit, inductive recipe for computing the coefficients in an asymptotic expansion for a tame supercuspidal represent…
Let $\bf{ G}$ be a tamely ramified connected reductive group defined over a non-archimedean local field $k$. We show that the Bernstein center of a tame supercuspidal block of $\bf{ G}(k)$ is isomorphic to the Bernstein center of a depth zero supercuspidal block of $\bf{ G}^{0}(k)$ for some twisted Levi subgroup of $\bf{ G}^{0}$ of $\bf{ G}$.
For tame arbitrary-length toral, also called positive regular, supercuspidal representations of a simply connected and semisimple $p$-adic group $G$, constructed as per Adler-Yu, we determine which components of their restriction to a maximal compact subgroup are types. We give conditions under which there is a unique such component, and then present a class of examples for which there is not, disproving the strong version of the conjecture of unicity of types on maximal compact open subgroups. We restate the unicity conjecture, and prove it holds for the groups and representations under consi…
This paper studies the behavior of Jiu-Kang Yu's tame supercuspidal representations relative to involutions of reductive p-adic groups. Symmetric space methods are used to illuminate various aspects of Yu's construction. Necessary conditions for a tame supercuspidal representation of G to be distinguished by (the fixed points of) an involution of G are expressed in terms of properties of the G-orbit of the associated G-datum. When these conditions are satisfied, the question of whether a tame supercuspidal representation is distinguished reduces to the question of whether certain cuspidal repr…
We will give an explicit construction of irreducible suparcuspidal representations of the special linear group over a non-archimedean local field and will speculate its Langlands parameter by means of verifying the Hiraga-Ichino-Ikeda formula of the formal degree of the supercuspidal representations.
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of residue characteristic $p\neq 2$. Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over $F$ that splits over a tamely ramified extension of $F$. Yu constructed types which are called tame supercuspidal types and conjectured that Hecke algebras associated with these types are isomorphic to Hecke algebras associated with depth-zero types of some twisted Levi subgroups of $G$. In this paper, we prove this conjecture. We also prove that the Hecke algebra associated with a regular supercuspidal type is isomorphic to the group algebra of a certain abelian group.
We establish properties of families of automorphic representations as we vary prescribed supercuspidal representations at a given finite set of primes. For the tame supercuspidals constructed by J.-K. Yu we prove the limit multiplicity property with error terms. Thereby we obtain a Sato-Tate equidistribution for the Hecke eigenvalues of these families. The main new ingredient is to show that the orbital integrals of matrix coefficients of tame supercuspidal representations with increasing formal degree on a connected reductive $p$-adic group tend to zero uniformly for every noncentral semisimp…
We further develop and simplify the general theory of distinguished tame supercuspidal representations of reductive $p$-adic groups due to Hakim and Murnaghan, as well as the analogous theory for finite reductive groups due to Lusztig. We apply our results to study the representations of ${\rm GL}_n(F)$, with $n$ odd and $F$ a nonarchimedean local field, that are distinguished with respect to an orthogonal group in $n$ variables. In particular, we determine precisely when a supercuspidal representation is distinguished with respect to an orthogonal group and, if so, that the space of distingui…
This paper simplifies and further develops various aspects of Tasho Kaletha's construction of regular supercuspidal representations. Moreover, Kaletha's construction is connected with the author's revision of Yu's construction of tame supercuspidal representations. This allows for a more direct construction of regular supercuspidal representations that is more amenable to applications.
The formal degree conjecture and the root number conjecture are verified with respect to supercuspidal representations of $Sp_{2n}(F)$ and $L$-parameters associated with tamely ramified extension $K/F$ of degree $2n$. The supercuspidal representation is constructed as a compact induction from an irreducible unitary representation of the hyper special compact group $Sp_{2n}(O_F)$, which is explicitly constructed, based upon the general theory developed by the author, by $K$ and certain character $θ$ of the multiplicative group $K^{\times}$. $L$-parameter is constructed by the data $\{K,θ\}$ by …
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field with finite residue field. Let $\mathcal{A}^{et}_n(F)$ be the collection of isomorphism classes of essentially tame irreducible supercuspidal representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ studied by Bushnell-Henniart. It is known that we can parameterize $\mathcal{A}^{et}_n(F)$ by the collection $P_n(F)$ of equivalence classes of admissible pairs $(E, ξ)$ consisting of a tamely ramified extension $E/F$ of degree $n$ and an $F$-admissible character $ξ$ of $E^\times$. We are interested in a finite symplectic module $V = V(ξ)$ arising from the construction of the …
Based on recent work of Kaletha, we apply Hakim--Murnaghan's result to study distinguished regular supercuspidal representations of tamely ramified reductive $p$-adic groups. Assuming $p$ is sufficiently large, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for regular supercuspidal representations to be distinguished. We also investigate the relation between the distinction problem and the Langlands functoriality, and confirm a conjecture of Lapid for regular depth-zero or epipelagic supercuspidal representations.
Based upon the general theory, developed by the author, on the parametrization of the irreducible representations of the hyper special compact groups corresponding to the regular adjoint orbit, supercuspidal representations of $SL_n(F)$ are explicitly constructed for which the formal degree conjecture and the root number conjecture are verified with respect to certain $L$-parameter defined, by means of Kaletha, that is, the local Langlands correspondence of tori and the Langlands-Schelstad procedure, by the data parametrizing the irreducible representations of the hyper special compact subgrou…
The author's work with Murnaghan on distinguished tame supercuspidal representations is re-examined using a simplified treatment of Jiu-Kang Yu's construction of tame supercuspidal representations of $p$-adic reductive groups. This leads to a unification of aspects of the theories of distinguished cuspidal representations over $p$-adic and finite fields.
Let $G$ be a quasi-split tamely ramified connected reductive group defined over a $p$-adic field $F$. We show that if $-1$ is in the $F$-points of the absolute Weyl group of $G$, then self-dual supercuspidal representations of $G(F)$ exist. Now assume further that $G$ is unramified and that the center of $G$ is connected. Let $π$ be a generic self-dual depth-zero regular supercuspidal representation of $G(F)$. We show that the Frobenius-Schur indicator of $π$ is given by the sign by which a certain distinguished element of the center of $G(F)$ of order two acts on $π$.
We exhibit a basis for the space of spherical characters of a distinguished supercuspidal representation $π$ of a connected reductive $p$-adic group, subject to the assumption that $π$ is obtained via induction from a representation of an open compact mod centre subgroup. We derive an integral formula for each spherical character belonging to the basis. This formula involves integration of a particular kind of matrix coefficient of $π$. We also obtain a similar formula for the function realizing the spherical character. In addition, we determine, subject to some conditions, which of these sphe…
We show that for any tame regular discrete series parameter of GSp_4 or its inner form GU_2(D), the L-packet attached by the local Langlands conjecture agrees with the L-packet of depth zero supercuspidal representations constructed by DeBacker and Reeder.
Let $F/F_0$ be a quadratic extension of non-Archimedean locally compact fields of residual characteristic $p\neq2$, and let $σ$ denote its non-trivial automorphism. Let $R$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from $p$. To any cuspidal representation $π$ of ${\rm GL}_n(F)$, with coefficients in $R$, such that $π^σ\simeqπ^{\vee}$ (such a representation is said to be $σ$-selfdual) we associate a quadratic extension $D/D_0$, where $D$ is a tamely ramified extension of $F$ and $D_0$ is a tamely ramified extension of $F_0$, together with a quadratic character of $D_0^{\times…
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field, $A$ be a central simple $F$-algebra, and $G$ be the multiplicative group of $A$. To construct types for supercuspidal representations of $G$, simple types by Sécherre--Stevens and Yu's construction are already known. In this paper, we compare these constructions. In particular, we show essentially tame supercuspidal representations of $G$ defined by Bushnell--Henniart are nothing but tame supercuspidal representations defined by Yu.
In this paper, we give a new construction of the tame local Langlands correspondence for GL(n,F), n a prime, where F is a p-adic field. In the tame case, supercuspidal representations of GL(n,F) are parameterized by characters of elliptic tori, but the local Langlands correspondence is unnatural because it involves a twist by some character of the torus. Taking the cue from real groups, supercuspidal representations should instead be parameterized by characters of covers of tori. Over the reals, Harish-Chandra described the characters of discrete series restricted to compact tori. They are nat…
We show that, in good residual characteristic, most supercuspidal representations of a tamely ramified reductive p-adic group G arise from pairs (S,θ), where S is a tame elliptic maximal torus of G, and θis a character of S satisfying a simple root-theoretic property. We then give a new expression for the roots of unity that appear in the Adler-DeBacker-Spice character formula for these supercuspidal representations and use it to show that this formula bears a striking resemblance to the character formula for discrete series representations of real reductive groups. Led by this, we explicitly …
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field and $G$ be the general linear group $\mathrm{GL}_n$ over $F$. Based on the previous results of the author, we can describe the Langlands parameter of an essentially tame supercuspidal representation of $G(F)$ by those admissible embeddings of L-groups constructed by Langlands and Shelstad. We therefore provide a different interpretation on Bushnell and Henniart's essentially tame local Langlands correspondence.
This paper develops the theory of distinguished regular supercuspidal representations, and it highlights how the correspondence between regular characters and regular supercuspidal representations resembles induction in certain ways.
In this paper, we prove the coincidence of Kaletha's recent construction of the local Langlands correspondence for regular supercuspidal representations with Harris--Taylor's one in the case of general linear groups. The keys are Bushnell--Henniart's essentially tame local Langlands correspondence and Tam's result on Bushnell--Henniart's rectifiers. By combining them, our problem is reduced to an elementary root-theoretic computation on the difference between Kaletha's and Tam's $χ$-data.
We give an explicit formula for the twisted gamma factor for a pair of irreducible supercuspidal representations of level zero. We also obtain an explicit formula for the unramified base change of level zero supercuspidal representations.
Let $π$ be a simple supercuspidal representation of the split even special orthogonal group. We compute the Rankin-Selberg $γ$-factors for rank 1-twists of $π$ by quadratic tamely ramified characters of $F^*$. We then use our results to determine the Langlands parameter of $π$ up to its restriction to the wild inertia subgroup, subject to an analogue of a work of Blondel, Henniart, and Stevens for $SO_{2l}$. In the particular case of the field $\mathbb{Q}_2$, we are able to describe the parameter completely.
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of residual characteristic $p$. Let $\mathbb{G}$ be a reductive group defined over $F$ which splits over a tamely ramified extension and set $G=\mathbb{G}(F)$. We assume that $p$ does not divide the order of the Weyl group of $\mathbb{G}$. Given a closed connected $F$-subgroup $\mathbb{H}$ that contains the derived subgroup of $\mathbb{G}$, we study the restriction to $H$ of an irreducible supercuspidal representation $π=π_G(Ψ)$ of $G$, where $Ψ$ is a $G$-datum as per the J.K. Yu Construction. We provide a full description of $π|_H$ into irreducible com…
Let $G$ be a reductive $p$-adic group. We prove that all supercuspidal representations of $G$ arise through Yu's construction subject to certain hypotheses on $k$ (depending on $G$). As a corollary, under the same hypotheses, we see that any supercuspidal representation is compactly induced from a representation of an open subgroup which is compact modulo the center.
In this note, we show that, in the setting of Galois pairs, the spherical characters of unitary supercuspidal representations satisfy an orthogonality relation.
We compare precisely and explicitly Bushnell-Kutzko and Yu's constructions of supercuspidal representations. At the end, we draw conclusions and ask a natural question about the existence of a general construction.
By the works of Yu, Kim and Hakim-Murnaghan, we have a parameterization and construction of all supercuspidal representations of a reductive $p$-adic group in terms of supercuspidal data, when $p$ is sufficiently large. In this paper, we will define a correspondence of supercuspidal data via moment maps and theta correspondences over finite fields. Then we will show that local theta correspondences between supercuspidal representations are completely described by this notion. In Appendix B, we give a short proof of a result of Pan on "depth preservation".
In this paper, we compute the characters of the simple supercuspidal representations of SL(2,F) and SL(3,F) on split tori. Here, F is an arbitrary non-Archimedean local field of characteristic zero.
We show that a mod-$\ell$-representation of a p-adic group arising from the analogue of Yu's construction is supercuspidal if and only if it arises from a supercuspidal representation of a finite reductive group. This has been previously shown by Henniart and Vigneras under the assumption that the second adjointness holds, a statement that is not yet available in the literature.
The restriction of a supercuspidal representation of SL_2(k), for k a local nonarchimedean field, to a maximal compact subgroup decomposes as a multiplicity-free direct sum of irreducible representations. We explicitly describe this decomposition in the case that the residual characteristic is odd, and determine how the spectrum of this decomposition varies as a function of the parameters describing the supercuspidal representation.
Let G be a unitary, symplectic or special orthogonal group over a locally compact non-archimedean local field of odd residual characteristic. We construct many new supercuspidal representations of G, and Bushnell-Kutzko types for these representations. Moreover, we prove that every irreducible supercuspidal representation of G arises from our constructions.
This article has a twofold purpose. First, by recent works of Kaletha and Loke-Ma, we give an explicit description of the local theta correspondence between regular supercuspidal representations in the equal rank symplectic-orthogonal case. Second, based on this description, we show that the local theta correspondence preserves distinction with respect to unramified Galois involutions.
Let F be a p-adic field with p odd. Quadratic base change and theta-lifting are shown to be compatible for supercuspidal representations of SL(2,F). The argument involves the theory of types and the lattice model of the Weil representation.
We re-write the character formulæ of Adler and the second-named author in a form amenable to explicit computations in $p$-adic harmonic analysis, and use them to prove the stability of character sums for a modification of Reeder's conjectural positive-depth, unramified, toral supercuspidal L-packets.
In 2014, Reeder and Yu constructed epipelagic representations of a reductive $p$-adic group $G$ from stable functions on shallowest Moy-Prasad quotients. In this paper, we extend these methods when $G$ is split. In particular, we classify all complex-valued characters vanshing on a slightly deeper Moy-Prasad subgroup and show that, while sufficient, a naive extension of Reeder-Yu's stability condition is not necessary for constructing supercuspidal representations.
We prove that Kaletha's local Langlands correspondence for regular supercuspidal representations gives the classical local Jacquet--Langlands correspondence due to Deligne--Kazhdan--Vigneras and Badulescu. As in a former joint paper with Oi, where a similar result is proved for the local Langlands correspondence for the general linear group, the key ingredients in our proof are the work of Bushnell--Henniart explicitly describing the local Jacquet--Langlands correspondence for essentially tame supercuspidal representations and its reinterpretation due to Tam in terms of Langlands--Shelstad's \…
Let k be a non-archimedean local field with residual characteristic p. Let G be a connected reductive group over k that splits over a tamely ramified field extension of k. Suppose p does not divide the order of the Weyl group of G. Then we show that every smooth irreducible complex representation of G(k) contains an $\mathfrak{s}$-type of the form constructed by Kim and Yu and that every irreducible supercuspidal representation arises from Yu's construction. This improves an earlier result of Kim, which held only in characteristic zero and with a very large and ineffective bound on p. By contr…
Let $G$ be a $p$-adic reductive group and $H$ a unimodular spherical subgroup of $G$. Let $π$ be a unitary supercuspidal representation of $G$. In this note, under a mild assumption, we show that local periods in $Hom_H(π,\mathbb{C})$ can be constructed by integrating the matrix coefficients of $π$ over $H$.
A well known result of Borel says that the category of modules over the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of a semisimple p-adic group G describes the Bernstein component associated to the unramified principal series of G. We consider Bernstein components for Sp(4,F) associated to principal series induced from simple supercuspidal representations.
We study components of the Bernstein category for a p-adic classical group (with p odd) with inertial support a self-dual positive level supercuspidal representation of a Siegel Levi subgroup. More precisely, we use the method of covers to construct a Bushnell-Kutzko type for such a component. A detailed knowledge of the Hecke algebra of the type should have number-theoretic implications.
Let F be a non-archimedean local field and let G be a connected reductive group defined over F. We assume that G splits over a tame extension of F and that the residual characteristic p does not divide the order of the Weyl group. To each discrete Langlands parameter of the Weil group of F into the complex L-group of G we associate explicitly a finite set of irreducible supercuspidal representations of G(F), and relate its internal structure to the centralizer of the parameter. We give evidence that this assignment is an explicit realization of the local Langlands correspondence.
Let $G$ be a reductive $p$-adic group. We give a short proof of the fact that $G$ always admits supercuspidal complex representations. This result has already been established by A. Kret using the Deligne-Lusztig theory of representations of finite groups of Lie type. Our argument is of a different nature and is self-contained. It is based on the Harish-Chandra theory of cusp forms and it ultimately relies on the existence of elliptic maximal tori in $G$.
In this paper we study the local theta correspondences between epipelagic supercupsidal representations of a type I classical dual pair $(G,G')$ over $p$-adic fields. We show that, besides an exceptional case, an epipelagic supercupsidal representation $π$ of $\widetilde{G}$ lifts to an epipelagic supercupsidal representation $π'$ of $\widetilde{G}'$ if and only if the epipelagic data of $π$ and $π'$ are related by the moment maps.
Let k be an algebraically closed field with characteristic l different from p. We show that the supercuspidal support of irreducible smooth k-representations of Levi subgroups M' of SL_n(F) is unique up to M'-conjugation, where F is either a finite field of characteristic p or a non-archimedean locally compact field of residual characteristic p.
