Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field and $G$ be the general linear group $\mathrm{GL}_n$ over $F$. Based on the previous results of the author, we can describe the Langlands parameter of an essentially tame supercuspidal representation of $G(F)$ by those admissible embeddings of L-groups constructed by Langlands and Shelstad. We therefore provide a different interpretation on Bushnell and Henniart's essentially tame local Langlands correspondence.
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field and $G$ be the general linear group $\mathrm{GL}_n$ over $F$. Bushnell and Henniart described the essentially tame local Langlands correspondence of $G(F)$ using rectifiers, which are certain characters defined on tamely ramified elliptic maximal tori of $G(F)$. They obtained such result by studying the automorphic induction character identity. We relate this identity to the spectral transfer character identity, based on the theory of twisted endoscopy of Kottwitz, Langlands, and Shelstad. In this article, we establish the following two main results. (i…
In this paper, we continue the work of the first author and give a new construction of the tame local Langlands correspondence for PGSp(4,F), where F is a p-adic field, that is analogous to the construction of the local Langlands correspondence for real groups.
Let $F$ be a a non-Archimedean local field of characteristic 0 and $G$ be an inner form of the general linear group $G^*=\mathrm{GL}_n$ over $F$. We show that the rectifying character appearing in the essentially tame Jacquet-Langlands correspondence of Bushnell and Henniart for $G$ and $G^*$ can be factorized into a product of some special characters, called zeta-data in this paper, in the theory of endoscopy of Langlands and Shelstad. As a consequence, the essentially tame local Langlands correspondence for $G$ can be described using admissible embeddings of L-tori.
In this paper, we give a new construction of the tame local Langlands correspondence for GL(n,F), n a prime, where F is a p-adic field. In the tame case, supercuspidal representations of GL(n,F) are parameterized by characters of elliptic tori, but the local Langlands correspondence is unnatural because it involves a twist by some character of the torus. Taking the cue from real groups, supercuspidal representations should instead be parameterized by characters of covers of tori. Over the reals, Harish-Chandra described the characters of discrete series restricted to compact tori. They are nat…
This is a sequel to the author's book "Derived Langlands" which introduced an embedding of the category of admissible representations of a locally p-adic group in to the derived category of the monomial category of the group. This article gives a reformulation in terms of the hyperHecke algebra and relates this viewpoint to a number of topics, including the Bernstein centre of the category of admissible representations.
This paper deals with the geometric local theta correspondence at the Iwahori level for dual reductive pairs of type II over a non Archimedean field $F$ of characteristic $p\neq 2$ in the framework of the geometric Langlands program. First we construct and study the geometric version of the invariants of the Weil representation of the Iwahori-Hecke algebras. In the particular case of $(GL_1, GL_m)$ we give a complete geometric description of the corresponding category. The second part of the paper deals with geometric local Langlands functoriality at the Iwahori level in a general setting. Giv…
Let G be an inner form of a general linear group over a non-archimedean local field. We prove that the local Langlands correspondence for G preserves depths. We also show that the local Langlands correspondence for inner forms of special linear groups preserves the depths of essentially tame Langlands parameters.
Let $F$ be a local field and $E/F$ be a separable extension of degree $n$. Regard $T=\text{Res}_{E/F} \mathbb{G}_m$ as an elliptic maximal torus of $G=\mathrm{GL}_n$. We can construct an admissible embedding of L-groups ${}^LT\hookrightarrow {}^LG$ using Langlands-Shelstad $χ$-data. Such embedding gives rise to an induced representation of the Weil group $W_F$ of $F$ from a character of $W_E$. The relation between induced representations and admissible embeddings provides a different interpretation of the work of Bushnell-Henniart on the essentially tame local Langlands correspondence.
Let K/F be a tamely ramified quadratic extension of non-archimedean locally compact fields. Let GL_m (D) be an inner form of GL_n (F) and GLp(R) = (M_m (D) \otimes K)^{\times} . Then GLp(R) is an inner form of GL_n (K). In this work, we determine conditions of GL_m (D)-distinction for level zero cuspidal representations of GL_p (R) which are the image of a level zero cuspidal representation by the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence, and we also prove that a level zero cuspidal representation of GL_n (K) is GL_n (F) distinguished if and only if its image by the Jacquet-Langlands correspondance is…
Let $K$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. We study the geometry and cohomology of the tamely ramified cover of Drinfeld's symmetric space over $K.$ We prove, in a purely local way, that the cohomology in middle degree realises the local Langlands correspondence and local Jacquet-Langlands correspondence for the depth zero supercuspidal representations.
We extend the local newform theory of B. Roberts and R. Schmidt for generic, irreducible, admissible representations of PGSp(4) to that for GSp(4). The newform matches to the Langlands parameter.
We provide an explicit construction of the local Langlands correspondence for general tamely-ramified reductive p-adic groups and a class of wildly ramified Langlands parameters. Furthermore, we verify that our construction satisfies the expected properties of such a correspondence. More precisely, we show that each L-packet we construct admits a parameterization in terms of the Langlands dual group, contains a unique generic element for a fixed Whittaker datum, satisfies the formal degree conjecture, is compatible with twists by central and cocentral characters, provides a stable virtual char…
In this paper, we prove the coincidence of Kaletha's recent construction of the local Langlands correspondence for regular supercuspidal representations with Harris--Taylor's one in the case of general linear groups. The keys are Bushnell--Henniart's essentially tame local Langlands correspondence and Tam's result on Bushnell--Henniart's rectifiers. By combining them, our problem is reduced to an elementary root-theoretic computation on the difference between Kaletha's and Tam's $χ$-data.
Let $π$ be a simple supercuspidal representation of the split even special orthogonal group. We compute the Rankin-Selberg $γ$-factors for rank 1-twists of $π$ by quadratic tamely ramified characters of $F^*$. We then use our results to determine the Langlands parameter of $π$ up to its restriction to the wild inertia subgroup, subject to an analogue of a work of Blondel, Henniart, and Stevens for $SO_{2l}$. In the particular case of the field $\mathbb{Q}_2$, we are able to describe the parameter completely.
We show how the modular representation theory of inner forms of general linear groups over a non-Archimedean local field can be brought to bear on the complex theory in a remarkable way. Let F be a non-Archimedean locally compact field of residue characteristic p, and let G be an inner form of the general linear group GL(n,F). We consider the problem of describing explicitly the local Jacquet--Langlands correspondence between the complex discrete series representations of G and GL(n,F), in terms of type theory. We show that the congruence properties of the local Jacquet--Langlands corresponden…
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field. Let $\Cal W_F$ be the Weil group of $F$ and $\Cal P_F$ the wild inertia subgroup of $\scr W_F$. Let $\hat{\Cal W}_F$ be the set of equivalence classes of irreducible smooth representations of $\Cal W_F$. Let $\Cal A^0_n(F)$ denote the set of equivalence classes of irreducible cuspidal representations of $\roman{GL}_n(F)$ and set $\hat{\roman{GL}}_F = \bigcup_{n\ge1} \Cal A^0_n(F)$. If $σ\in \hat{\Cal W}_F$, let $\upr Lσ\in \hat{\roman{GL}}_F$ be the cuspidal representation matched with $σ$ by the Langlands Correspondence. If $σ$ is totally wildly ramif…
We prove that Kaletha's local Langlands correspondence for regular supercuspidal representations gives the classical local Jacquet--Langlands correspondence due to Deligne--Kazhdan--Vigneras and Badulescu. As in a former joint paper with Oi, where a similar result is proved for the local Langlands correspondence for the general linear group, the key ingredients in our proof are the work of Bushnell--Henniart explicitly describing the local Jacquet--Langlands correspondence for essentially tame supercuspidal representations and its reinterpretation due to Tam in terms of Langlands--Shelstad's \…
Let $G$ and $\tilde G$ be reductive groups over a local field $F$. Let $η: \tilde G \to G$ be a $F$-homomorphism with commutative kernel and commutative cokernel. We investigate the pullbacks of irreducible admissible $G$-representations $π$ along $η$. Following Borel, Adler--Korman and Xu, we pose a conjecture on the decomposition of the pullback $η^* π$. It is formulated in terms of enhanced Langlands parameters and includes multiplicities. This can be regarded as a functoriality property of the local Langlands correspondence. We prove this conjecture for three classes: principal series repr…
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field and $G={\bf{G}}(F)$ the group of $F$-rational points of a connected reductive $F$-group. Then we have the Langlands classification of complex irreducible admissible representations $π$ of $G$ in terms of triples $(P,σ,ν)$ where $P\subset G$ is a standard $F$-parabolic subgroup, $σ$ is an irreducible tempered representation of the standard Levi-group $M_P$ and $ν\in \Bbb{R}\otimes X^*(M_P)$ is regular with respect to $P.$ Now we consider Langlands' L-parameters $[ϕ]$ which conjecturally will serve as a system of parameters for the representations $π$ and…
We generalize the work of DeBacker and Reeder to the case of unitary groups split by a tame extension. The approach is broadly similar and the restrictions on the parameter the same, but many of the details of the arguments differ. Let $G$ be a unitary group defined over a local field $K$ and splitting over a tame extension $E/K$. Given a Langlands parameter $φ: \mathcal{W}_K \rightarrow {^L G}$ that is tame, discrete and regular, we give a natural construction of an $L$-packet $Π_φ$ associated to $φ$, consisting of representations of pure inner forms of $G(K)$ and parametrized by the characte…
Consider the character of an irreducible admissible representation of a p-adic reductive group. The Harish-Chandra-Howe local expansion expresses this character near a semisimple element as a linear combination of Fourier transforms of nilpotent orbital integrals. Under mild hypotheses, we describe an explicit region on which the local character expansion is valid. We assume neither that the group is connected nor that the underlying field has characteristic zero.
In the case of split $GSpin$ groups, we prove an equality of $L$-functions between automorphic local $L$-functions defined by the Langlands-Shahidi method and local Artin $L$-functions. Our method of proof is based on previous results of the first author which allow to reduce the problem to supercuspidal representations of Levi subgroups of $GSpin$, by constructing Langlands parameters for general generic irreducible admissible representations of $GSpin $ from the one for generic irreducible supercuspidal representations of its Levi subgroups.
Reeder and Yu have recently given a new construction of a class of supercuspidal representations called epipelagic representations. We explicitly calculate the Local Langlands Correspondence for certain families of epipelagic representations of unitary groups, following the general construction of Kaletha [Kal15]. The interesting feature of our computation is that we find simplifications within L-packets of the two novel invariants introduced in [Kal15], the toral invariant and the admissible L-embedding.
For $E/F$ quadratic extension of local fields and $G$ a reductive algebraic group over $F$, the paper formulates a conjecture classifying irreducible admissible representations of $G(E)$ which carry a $G(F)$ invariant linear form, and the dimension of the space of these invariant forms, in terms of the Langlands parameter of the representation. The paper studies parameter spaces of Langlands parameters, and morphisms between them associated to morphisms of $L$-groups. The conjectural answer to the question on the space of $G(F)$-invariant linear forms is in terms of fibers of a particular fini…
By the theory of Colmez and Fontaine, a de Rham representation of the Galois group of a local field roughly corresponds to a representation of the Weil-Deligne group equipped with an admissible filtration on the underlying vector space. Using a modification of the classical local Langlands correspondence, we associate with any pair consisting of a Weil-Deligne group representation and a type of a filtration (admissible or not) a specific locally algebraic representation of a general linear group. We advertise the conjecture that this pair comes from a de Rham representation if and only if the …
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field with finite residue field. Let $\mathcal{A}^{et}_n(F)$ be the collection of isomorphism classes of essentially tame irreducible supercuspidal representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ studied by Bushnell-Henniart. It is known that we can parameterize $\mathcal{A}^{et}_n(F)$ by the collection $P_n(F)$ of equivalence classes of admissible pairs $(E, ξ)$ consisting of a tamely ramified extension $E/F$ of degree $n$ and an $F$-admissible character $ξ$ of $E^\times$. We are interested in a finite symplectic module $V = V(ξ)$ arising from the construction of the …
Let F be a non-archimedean local field. We establish the local Langlands correspondence for all inner forms of the group $SL_n (F)$. It takes the form of a bijection between, on the one hand, conjugacy classes of Langlands parameters for $SL_n (F)$ enhanced with an irreducible representation of an S-group and, on the other hand, the union of the spaces of irreducible admissible representations of all inner forms of $SL_n (F)$. An analogous result is shown in the archimedean case. To settle the case where F has positive characteristic, we employ the method of close fields. We prove that this me…
Let F be a p-adic field and n a positive integer. The local Langlands conjecture asserts the existence of a bijection between irreducible admissible representations of GL(n,F) and n-dimensional admissible representations of the Weil-Deligne group of F. This bijection is required to satisfy certain natural compatibilities, of which the most important is compatibility with local functional equations (preservation of L and epsilon factors of pairs). It is enough to construct a bijection with these properties between supercuspidal representations of GL(n,F) and n-dimensional irreducible representa…
We discuss progress towards the classification of irreducible admissible representations of reductive groups over non-archimedean local fields and the local Langlands correspondence. We also state some (partly conjectural) compatibility properties of the refined local Langlands correspondence.
We describe the image, under the local Langlands correspondence for tori, of the characters of a torus which are trivial on its Iwahori subgroup. Let $k$ be a non-archimedian local field. Let $\boldsymbol{G}$ be a connected reductive group defined over $k$, which is quasi-split and split over a tamely ramified extension. Let $K$ be a special maximal parahoric subgroup of $\boldsymbol{G}(k)$. To the class of representations of $\boldsymbol{G}(k)$, having a non-zero vector fixed under $K$, we establish a bijection, in a natural way, with the twisted semi-simple conjugacy classes of the inertia f…
Generalised hypergeometric sheaves are rigid local systems on the punctured projective line with remarkable properties. Their study originated in the seminal work of Riemann on the Euler--Gauss hypergeometric function and has blossomed into an active field with connections to many areas of mathematics. In this paper, we construct the Hecke eigensheaves whose eigenvalues are the irreducible hypergeometric local systems, thus confirming a central conjecture of the geometric Langlands program for hypergeometrics. The key new concept is the notion of hypergeometric automorphic data. We prove that …
By computing reducibility points of parabolically induced representations, we construct, to within at most two unramified quadratic characters, the Langlands parameter of an arbitrary depth zero irreducible cuspidal representation $π$ of a classical group (which may be not-quasi-split) over a nonarchimedean local field of odd residual characteristic. From this, we can explicitly describe all the irreducible cuspidal representations in the union of one, two, or four L-packets, containing $π$. These results generalize the work of DeBacker-Reeder (in the case of classical groups) from regular to …
Let $(π,V)$ be a $GL_n(\mathbb{R})$-distinguished, irreducible, admissible representation of $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$, let $π'$ be an irreducible, admissible, $GL_m(\mathbb{R})$-distinguished representation of $GL_m(\mathbb{C})$, and let $ψ$ be a non-trival character of $\mathbb{C}$ which is trivial on $\mathbb{R}$. We prove that Rankin-Selberg gamma factor at $s=\frac{1}{2}$ is $γ(\frac{1}{2},π\times π'; ψ) = 1$. The result follows as a simple consequence from the characterisation of $GL_n(\mathbb{R})$-distinguished representations in terms of their Langlands data.
Refined forms of the local Langlands correspondence seek to relate representations of reductive groups over local fields with sheaves on stacks of Langlands parameters. But what kind of sheaves? Conjectures in the spirit of Kazhdan-Lusztig theory (due to Vogan and Soergel) describe representations of a group and its pure inner forms with fixed central character in terms of constructible sheaves. Conjectures in the spirit of geometric Langlands (due to Fargues, Zhu and Hellmann) describe representations with varying central character of a large family of groups associated to isocrystals in term…
The local Langlands correspondence for GL(n) of a non-Archimedean local field $F$ parametrizes irreducible admissible representations of $GL(n,F)$ in terms of representations of the Weil-Deligne group $WD_F$ of $F$. The correspondence, whose existence for $p$-adic fields was proved in joint work of the author with R. Taylor, and then more simply by G. Henniart, is characterized by its preservation of salient properties of the two classes of representations. The article reviews the strategies of the two proofs. Both the author's proof with Taylor and Henniart's proof are global and rely ultimat…
Let G be a general linear group over a p-adic field and let D^* be an anisotropic inner form of G. The Jacquet-Langlands correspondence between irreducible complex representations of D^* and discrete series of G does not behave well with respect to reduction modulo l\neq p. However we show that the Langlands-Jacquet transfer, from the Grothendieck group of admissible l-adic representations of G to that of D^* is compatible with congruences and reduces modulo l to a similar transfer for l-modular representations, which moreover can be characterized by some Brauer characters identities. Studying…
Let $π$ be an irreducible admissible (complex) representation of $GL(2)$ over a non-archimedean characteristic zero local field with odd residual characteristic. In this paper we prove the equality between the local symmetric square $L$-function associated to $π$ arising from integral representations and the corresponding Artin $L$-function for its Langlands parameter through the local Langlands correspondence. With this in hand, we show the stability of local symmetric $γ$-factors attached to $π$ under highly ramified twists.
We construct a certain topological algebra $\Ext ^{\sharp}_{G ^{\vee}} X (χ)$ from a Deligne-Langlands parameter space $X (χ)$ attached to the group of rational points of a connected split reductive algebraic group $G$ over a non-Archimedean local field $\mathbb K$. Then we prove the equivalence between the category of continuous modules of $\Ext ^{\sharp}_{G ^{\vee}} X (χ)$ and the category of unramified admissible modules of $G (\mathbb K)$ with a generalized infinitesimal character corresponding to $χ$. This is an analogue of Soergel's conjecture which concerns the real reductive setting.
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field. We show that any representation of a maximal compact subgroup of $\mathbf{SL}_N(F)$ which is typical for an essentially tame supercuspidal representation must be induced from a Bushnell--Kutzko maximal simple type. From this, we explicitly count and describe the conjugacy classes of such typical representations, and give an explicit description of an inertial Langlands correspondence for essentially tame irreducible $N$-dimensional projective representations of the Weil group of $F$.
Let $π$ be an irreducible admissible representation of $GL_m(F)$, where $F$ is a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero. We follow the method developed by Cogdell and Piatetski-Shapiro to complete the computation of the local exterior square $L$-function $L(s,π,\wedge^2)$ in terms of $L$-functions of supercuspidal representations via an integral representation established by Jacquet and Shalika in $1990$. We analyze the local exterior square $L$-functions via exceptional poles and Bernstein and Zelevinsky derivatives. With this result, we show the equality of the local analytic $L$…
Let F be a non-archimedean local field and let G be a connected reductive group defined over F. We assume that G splits over a tame extension of F and that the residual characteristic p does not divide the order of the Weyl group. To each discrete Langlands parameter of the Weil group of F into the complex L-group of G we associate explicitly a finite set of irreducible supercuspidal representations of G(F), and relate its internal structure to the centralizer of the parameter. We give evidence that this assignment is an explicit realization of the local Langlands correspondence.
The article is a contribution to the local theory of geometric Langlands correspondence. The main result is a categorification of the isomorphism between the (extended) affine Hecke algebra, thought of as an algebra of Iwahori bi-invariant functions on a semi-simple group over a local non-Archimedian field, and Grothendieck group of equivariant coherent sheaves on Steinberg variety of the Langlands dual group; this isomorphism due to Kazhdan--Lusztig and Ginzburg is a key step in the proof of tamely ramified local Langlands conjectures. The paper is a continuation of an earlier joint work with…
Let $F$ be a totally real field, $\mathfrak{p}$ an unramified place of $F$ dividing $p$ and $\overline{r}: \mathrm{Gal}(\overline{F}/F)\rightarrow\mathrm{GL}_2(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p)$ a continuous irreducible modular representation. The work of Buzzard, Diamond and Jarvis associates to $\overline{r}$ an admissible smooth representation of $\mathrm{GL}_2(F_\mathfrak{p})$ on the mod $p$ cohomology of Shimura curves attached to indefinite division algebras which split at $\mathfrak{p}$. When $\overline{r}|_{\mathrm{Gal}(\overline{F_\mathfrak{p}}/F_\mathfrak{p})}$ is tamely ramified and generic …
We classify the automorphic representations (over number fields) and the irreducible admissible representations (over local fields) of unitary groups which are not quasi-split, under the assumption that the same is known for quasi-split unitary groups. The classification of automorphic representations is given in terms of automorphic representations of general linear groups. The classification of irreducible admissible representations is given in terms of Langlands parameters.
