We combine the ideas of a Harish-Chandra--Howe local character expansion, which can be centred at an arbitrary semisimple element, and a Kim--Murnaghan asymptotic expansion, which so far has been considered only around the identity. We show that, for most smooth, irreducible representations (those containing a good, minimal K-type), Kim--Murnaghan-type asymptotic expansions are valid on explicitly defined neighbourhoods of nearly arbitrary semisimple elements. We then give an explicit, inductive recipe for computing the coefficients in an asymptotic expansion for a tame supercuspidal representation. The only additional information needed in the inductive step is a fourth root of unity, which we expect to be useful in proving stability and endoscopic-transfer identities.
A new approach to Jiu-Kang Yu's construction of tame supercuspidal representations of $p$-adic reductive groups is presented. Connections with the theory of cuspidal Deligne-Lusztig representations of finite groups of Lie type are also discussed.
For a $p$-adic field $F$, the embeddings of a tame supercuspidal representation of $G= {\rm GL}_n (F)$ in the space of smooth functions on the set of symmetric matrices in $G$ are determined.
For tame arbitrary-length toral, also called positive regular, supercuspidal representations of a simply connected and semisimple $p$-adic group $G$, constructed as per Adler-Yu, we determine which components of their restriction to a maximal compact subgroup are types. We give conditions under which there is a unique such component, and then present a class of examples for which there is not, disproving the strong version of the conjecture of unicity of types on maximal compact open subgroups. We restate the unicity conjecture, and prove it holds for the groups and representations under consi…
This paper studies the behavior of Jiu-Kang Yu's tame supercuspidal representations relative to involutions of reductive p-adic groups. Symmetric space methods are used to illuminate various aspects of Yu's construction. Necessary conditions for a tame supercuspidal representation of G to be distinguished by (the fixed points of) an involution of G are expressed in terms of properties of the G-orbit of the associated G-datum. When these conditions are satisfied, the question of whether a tame supercuspidal representation is distinguished reduces to the question of whether certain cuspidal repr…
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of residue characteristic $p\neq 2$. Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over $F$ that splits over a tamely ramified extension of $F$. Yu constructed types which are called tame supercuspidal types and conjectured that Hecke algebras associated with these types are isomorphic to Hecke algebras associated with depth-zero types of some twisted Levi subgroups of $G$. In this paper, we prove this conjecture. We also prove that the Hecke algebra associated with a regular supercuspidal type is isomorphic to the group algebra of a certain abelian group.
We establish properties of families of automorphic representations as we vary prescribed supercuspidal representations at a given finite set of primes. For the tame supercuspidals constructed by J.-K. Yu we prove the limit multiplicity property with error terms. Thereby we obtain a Sato-Tate equidistribution for the Hecke eigenvalues of these families. The main new ingredient is to show that the orbital integrals of matrix coefficients of tame supercuspidal representations with increasing formal degree on a connected reductive $p$-adic group tend to zero uniformly for every noncentral semisimp…
We further develop and simplify the general theory of distinguished tame supercuspidal representations of reductive $p$-adic groups due to Hakim and Murnaghan, as well as the analogous theory for finite reductive groups due to Lusztig. We apply our results to study the representations of ${\rm GL}_n(F)$, with $n$ odd and $F$ a nonarchimedean local field, that are distinguished with respect to an orthogonal group in $n$ variables. In particular, we determine precisely when a supercuspidal representation is distinguished with respect to an orthogonal group and, if so, that the space of distingui…
The author's work with Murnaghan on distinguished tame supercuspidal representations is re-examined using a simplified treatment of Jiu-Kang Yu's construction of tame supercuspidal representations of $p$-adic reductive groups. This leads to a unification of aspects of the theories of distinguished cuspidal representations over $p$-adic and finite fields.
We exhibit a basis for the space of spherical characters of a distinguished supercuspidal representation $π$ of a connected reductive $p$-adic group, subject to the assumption that $π$ is obtained via induction from a representation of an open compact mod centre subgroup. We derive an integral formula for each spherical character belonging to the basis. This formula involves integration of a particular kind of matrix coefficient of $π$. We also obtain a similar formula for the function realizing the spherical character. In addition, we determine, subject to some conditions, which of these sphe…
We show that for any tame regular discrete series parameter of GSp_4 or its inner form GU_2(D), the L-packet attached by the local Langlands conjecture agrees with the L-packet of depth zero supercuspidal representations constructed by DeBacker and Reeder.
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field, $A$ be a central simple $F$-algebra, and $G$ be the multiplicative group of $A$. To construct types for supercuspidal representations of $G$, simple types by Sécherre--Stevens and Yu's construction are already known. In this paper, we compare these constructions. In particular, we show essentially tame supercuspidal representations of $G$ defined by Bushnell--Henniart are nothing but tame supercuspidal representations defined by Yu.
In this paper, we give a new construction of the tame local Langlands correspondence for GL(n,F), n a prime, where F is a p-adic field. In the tame case, supercuspidal representations of GL(n,F) are parameterized by characters of elliptic tori, but the local Langlands correspondence is unnatural because it involves a twist by some character of the torus. Taking the cue from real groups, supercuspidal representations should instead be parameterized by characters of covers of tori. Over the reals, Harish-Chandra described the characters of discrete series restricted to compact tori. They are nat…
We show that, in good residual characteristic, most supercuspidal representations of a tamely ramified reductive p-adic group G arise from pairs (S,θ), where S is a tame elliptic maximal torus of G, and θis a character of S satisfying a simple root-theoretic property. We then give a new expression for the roots of unity that appear in the Adler-DeBacker-Spice character formula for these supercuspidal representations and use it to show that this formula bears a striking resemblance to the character formula for discrete series representations of real reductive groups. Led by this, we explicitly …
Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of residual characteristic $p$. Let $\mathbb{G}$ be a reductive group defined over $F$ which splits over a tamely ramified extension and set $G=\mathbb{G}(F)$. We assume that $p$ does not divide the order of the Weyl group of $\mathbb{G}$. Given a closed connected $F$-subgroup $\mathbb{H}$ that contains the derived subgroup of $\mathbb{G}$, we study the restriction to $H$ of an irreducible supercuspidal representation $π=π_G(Ψ)$ of $G$, where $Ψ$ is a $G$-datum as per the J.K. Yu Construction. We provide a full description of $π|_H$ into irreducible com…
In this note, we show that, in the setting of Galois pairs, the spherical characters of unitary supercuspidal representations satisfy an orthogonality relation.
In this paper, we compute the characters of the simple supercuspidal representations of SL(2,F) and SL(3,F) on split tori. Here, F is an arbitrary non-Archimedean local field of characteristic zero.
We re-write the character formulæ of Adler and the second-named author in a form amenable to explicit computations in $p$-adic harmonic analysis, and use them to prove the stability of character sums for a modification of Reeder's conjectural positive-depth, unramified, toral supercuspidal L-packets.
In 2014, Reeder and Yu constructed epipelagic representations of a reductive $p$-adic group $G$ from stable functions on shallowest Moy-Prasad quotients. In this paper, we extend these methods when $G$ is split. In particular, we classify all complex-valued characters vanshing on a slightly deeper Moy-Prasad subgroup and show that, while sufficient, a naive extension of Reeder-Yu's stability condition is not necessary for constructing supercuspidal representations.
We show that some types for supercuspidal representations of tamely ramified $p$-adic groups that appear in Jiu-Kang Yu's work are geometrizable. To do so, we define a function-sheaf dictionary for one-dimensional characters of arbitrary smooth group schemes over finite fields. In previous work we considered the case of commutative smooth group schemes and found that the standard definition of character sheaves produced a dictionary with a nontrivial kernel. In this paper we give a modification of the category of character sheaves that remedies this defect, and is also extensible to non-commut…
We prove the conjectural endoscopic transfer of L-packets for the local Langlands correspondence for pure inner forms of unramified p-adic groups and depth-zero parameters established by DeBacker and Reeder. More precisely, we show that under mild conditions on the residual characteristic, endoscopic induction identifies an unstable character of such an L-packet with the stable character of the corresponding endoscopic L-packet.
Let $\rm E/\rm F$ be an unramified quadratic extension of local non archimedean fields of characteristic 0. Let $\underline{H}$ be an algebraic reductive group, defined and split over $\rm F$. We assume that the split connected component of the center of $\underline{H}$ is trivial. Let $(τ,V)$ be a $\underline{H}(\rm F)$-distinguished supercuspidal representation of $\underline{H}(\rm E)$. Using the recent results of C. Zhang, and the geometric side of a local relative trace formula obtained by P. Delorme, P. Harinck and S. Souaifi, we describe spherical characters associated to $\underline{H}…
We compute the characters of many supercuspidal representations of reductive p-adic groups. Specifically, we deal with representations that arise via Yu's construction from data satisfying a certain compactness condition. Each character is expressed in terms of a depth-zero character of a smaller group, the (linear) characters appearing in Yu's construction, Fourier transforms of orbital integrals, and certain signs and cardinalities that are described explicitly in terms of the datum associated to the representation and of the element at which the character is evaluated.
The character formulas of Sally and Shalika are an early triumph in $p$-adic harmonic analysis, but, to date, the calculations underlying the formulas have not been available. In this paper, which should be viewed as a precursor of the forthcoming volume by the authors and Alan Roche, we leverage modern technology (for example, the Moy-Prasad theory) to compute explicit character tables. An interesting highlight is the computation of the 'exceptional' supercuspidal characters, i.e., those depth-zero representations not arising by inflation-induction from a Deligne-Lusztig representation of fin…
We consider two sign characters defined on a tamely ramified maximal torus T of a twisted Levi subgroup M of a reductive p-adic group G. We show that their product extends to the stabilizer M(F)_x of any point x in the Bruhat-Tits building of T, and give a formula for this extension. This result is used in the passage between zero and positive depth in the explicit construction of supercuspidal L-packets, as well as in forthcoming work on the Harish-Chandra character formula for supercuspidal representations.
For an essentially tame supercuspidal representation $π$ of a connected reductive $p$-adic group $G$, we establish two distinct and complementary sufficient conditions for the irreducible components of its restriction to a maximal compact subgroup to occur in a representation of $G$ which is not inertially equivalent to $π$. These two results are further formulated in terms of the geometry of the Bruhat-Tits building of $G$ and its fixed points under the action of certain tori. The consequence is a set of broadly applicable tools for addressing the branching rules of $π$ and the unicity of $[G…
In this paper, for quasi-split classical groups over p-adic fields, we determine the L-packets consisting of simple supercuspidal representations and their corresponding L-parameters, under the assumption that p is not equal to 2. The key is an explicit computation of characters of simple supercuspidal representations and the endoscopic character relation, which is a characterization of the local Langlands correspondence for quasi-split classical groups.
We compute the characters of simple supercuspidal representations of twisted GL(2n) and standard SO(2n+1) over a p-adic field. Comparing them by the endoscopic character relation, we determine the liftings of simple supercuspidal representations of SO(2n+1) to GL(2n), under the assumption that p is not equal to 2.
Let K be a non-archimedean local field and let G be a connected reductive K-group which splits over an unramified extension of K. We investigate supercuspidal unipotent representations of the group G(K). We establish a bijection between the set of irreducible G(K)-representations of this kind and the set of cuspidal enhanced L-parameters for G(K), which are trivial on the inertia subgroup of the Weil group of K. The bijection is characterized by a few simple equivariance properties and a comparison of formal degrees of representations with adjoint $γ$-factors of L-parameters. This can be regar…
In this article, we study Prasad's conjecture for regular supercuspidal representations based on the machinery developed by Hakim and Murnaghan to study distinguished representations, and the fundamental work of Kaletha on parameterization of regular supercuspidal representations. For regular supercuspidal representations, we give some new interpretations of the numerical quantities appearing in Prasad's formula, and reduce the proof to the case of tori. The proof of Prasad's conjecture then reduces to a comparison of various quadratic characters appearing naturally in the above process. We al…
Let U(N) be the quasi-split unitary group in N variables for a quadratic unramified extension of p-adic fields. We compute the characters of simple supercuspidal representations of twisted GL(N) and U(N). Comparing them by the endoscopic character relation, we determine the liftings of simple supercuspidal representations of U(N) to GL(N), under the assumption that p is not equal to 2.
We show that $L$-packets of toral supercuspidal representations arising from unramified maximal tori of $p$-adic groups are realized by Deligne--Lusztig varieties for parahoric subgroups. We prove this by exhibiting a direct comparison between the cohomology of these varieties and algebraic constructions of supercuspidal representations. Our approach is to establish that toral irreducible representations are uniquely determined by the values of their characters on a domain of sufficiently regular elements. This is an analogue of Harish-Chandra's characterization of real discrete series represe…
We give a modification of Yu's construction of supercuspidal representations of a connected reductive group over a non-archimedean local field. This modification restores the validity of certain key intertwining property claims made by Yu, which were recently proven to be false for the original construction. This modification is also an essential ingredient in the explicit construction of supercuspidal L-packets. As further applications, we prove the stability and many instances of endoscopic character identities of these supercuspidal L-packets, subject to some conditions on the base field. I…
This paper is concerned with the values of Harish-Chandra characters of a class of positive-depth, toral, very supercuspidal representations of $p$-adic symplectic and special orthogonal groups, near the identity element. We declare two representations equivalent if their characters coincide on a specific neighbourhood of the identity (which is larger than the neighbourhood on which Harish-Chandra local character expansion holds). We construct a parameter space $B$ (that depends on the group and a real number $r>0$) for the set of equivalence classes of the representations of minimal depth $r$…
In this paper we study quantitative aspects of trace characters $Θ_π$ of reductive $p$-adic groups when the representation $π$ varies. Our approach is based on the local constancy of characters and we survey some other related results. We formulate a conjecture on the behavior of $Θ_π$ relative to the formal degree of $π$, which we are able to prove in the case where $π$ is a tame supercuspidal. The proof builds on J.-K.~Yu's construction and the structure of Moy-Prasad subgroups.
We give a motivic proof of a character formula for depth zero supercuspidal representations of $p$-adic SL(2). We begin by finding the virtual Chow motives for the character values of all depth zero supercuspidal representations of $p$-adic SL(2), at topologically unipotent elements. Then we find the virtual Chow motives for the values of the Fourier transform of all regular elliptic orbital integrals with depth zero in their Cartan subalgebra, at topologically nilpotent elements. Finally, we prove a character formula for depth zero supercuspidal representations by showing that the formula cor…
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field and $G$ be the general linear group $\mathrm{GL}_n$ over $F$. Bushnell and Henniart described the essentially tame local Langlands correspondence of $G(F)$ using rectifiers, which are certain characters defined on tamely ramified elliptic maximal tori of $G(F)$. They obtained such result by studying the automorphic induction character identity. We relate this identity to the spectral transfer character identity, based on the theory of twisted endoscopy of Kottwitz, Langlands, and Shelstad. In this article, we establish the following two main results. (i…
Consider the character of an irreducible admissible representation of a p-adic reductive group. The Harish-Chandra-Howe local expansion expresses this character near a semisimple element as a linear combination of Fourier transforms of nilpotent orbital integrals. Under mild hypotheses, we describe an explicit region on which the local character expansion is valid. We assume neither that the group is connected nor that the underlying field has characteristic zero.
We present results and examples which show that the consideration of a certain tubular mutation is advantageous in the study of noncommutative curves which parametrize the simple regular representations of a tame bimodule. We classify all tame bimodules where such a curve is actually commutative, or in different words, where the unique generic module has a commutative endomorphism ring. This extends results from [14] to arbitrary characteristic; in characteristic two additionally inseparable cases occur. Further results are concerned with autoequivalences fixing all objects but not isomorphic …
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over a totally real field $F$ which is compact modulo center at archimedean places. We find congruences modulo an arbitrary power of p between the space of arbitrary automorphic forms on $G(\mathbb A_F)$ and that of automorphic forms with supercuspidal components at p, provided that p is larger than the Coxeter number of the absolute Weyl group of $G$. We illustrate how such congruences can be applied in the construction of Galois representations. Our proof is based on type theory for representations of p-adic groups, generalizing the prototypical case of…
We show that, under fairly general conditions, many elements of a p-adic group can be well approximated by a product whose factors have properties that are helpful in performing explicit character computations.
In this paper, we give a new realization of the local Langlands correspondence for PGL(2,F), where F is a p-adic field of odd residual characteristic. In this case, supercuspidal representations of PGL(2,F) are parameterized by characters of elliptic tori. Taking a cue from real groups, we propose that supercuspidal representations are naturally parameterized by characters of covers of tori. Over the reals, Harish-Chandra defined the discrete series representations by specifying their characters restricted to an elliptic torus, and these characters may naturally be expressed in terms of charac…
Let $F$ be a a non-Archimedean local field of characteristic 0 and $G$ be an inner form of the general linear group $G^*=\mathrm{GL}_n$ over $F$. We show that the rectifying character appearing in the essentially tame Jacquet-Langlands correspondence of Bushnell and Henniart for $G$ and $G^*$ can be factorized into a product of some special characters, called zeta-data in this paper, in the theory of endoscopy of Langlands and Shelstad. As a consequence, the essentially tame local Langlands correspondence for $G$ can be described using admissible embeddings of L-tori.
