We analyse in depth an $S_3$-invariant nearest-neighbor quantum chain in the region of a U(1)-invariant self-dual multicritical point. We find four distinct proximate gapped phases. One has three-state Potts order, corresponding to topological order in a parafermionic formulation. Also nearby is a phase with "representation" symmetry-protected topological (RSPT) order. Its dual exhibits an unusual "not-A" order, where the spins prefer to align in two of the three directions. Within each of the four phases, we find a frustration-free point with exact ground state(s). The exact RSPT ground state is similar to that of Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki, whereas its dual states in the not-A phase are product states, each an equal-amplitude sum over all states where one of the three spin states on each site is absent. A field-theory analysis shows that all transitions are in the universality class of the critical three-state Potts model. They provide a lattice realization of a flow from a free-boson field theory to the Potts conformal field theory.
We compute the correlation functions of the three state superintegrable chiral Potts spin chain for chains of length 3,4,5. From these results we present conjectures for the form of the nearest neighbor correlation function.
We derive an exact renormalization group recursion relation for the Loschmidt amplitude of the quantum $Q$-state clock model and the quantum $Q$-state Potts model in one dimension. The renormalization group flow is discussed in detail. The fixed-points of the renormalization group flow are found to be complex in general. These fixed-points control the dynamical phases of the two models, giving rise to non-analyticities in its Loschmidt rate function, for both the pure and the disordered system. For the quench protocols studied, dynamical quantum phase transitions are found to occur in the cloc…
A closed-form exact analytical solution for the q-state Potts model on a ladder 2 x oo with arbitrary two-, three-, and four-site interactions in a unit cell is presented. Using the obtained solution it is shown that the finite-size internal energy equation yields an accurate value of the critical temperature for the triangular Potts lattice with three-site interactions in alternate triangular faces. It is argued that the above equation is exact at least for self-dual models on isotropic lattices.
We present exact calculations of Potts model partition functions and the equivalent Tutte polynomials for polygon chain graphs with open and cyclic boundary conditions. Special cases of the results that yield flow and reliability polynomials are discussed. We also analyze special cases of the Tutte polynomials that determine various quantities of graph-theoretic interest.
The entanglement entropy, ${\cal S}$, is an indicator of quantum correlations in the ground state of a many body quantum system. At a second-order quantum phase-transition point in one dimension ${\cal S}$ generally has a logarithmic singularity. Here we consider quantum spin chains with a first-order quantum phase transition, the prototype being the $Q$-state quantum Potts chain for $Q>4$ and calculate ${\cal S}$ across the transition point. According to numerical, density matrix renormalization group results at the first-order quantum phase transition point ${\cal S}$ shows a jump, which is …
Recently, a non-trivial relation between the quasi-particle spectrum and entanglement entropy production was discovered in non-integrable quenches in the paramagnetic Ising quantum spin chain. Here we study the dynamics of analogous quenches in the quantum Potts spin chain. Tuning the parameters of the system, we observe a sudden increase in the entanglement production rate, which is shown to be related to the appearance of new quasiparticle excitations in the post-quench spectrum. Our results demonstrate the generality of the effect and support its interpretation as the non-equilibrium versio…
We derive spin operator matrix elements between general eigenstates of the superintegrable Z_N-symmetric chiral Potts quantum chain of finite length. Our starting point is the extended Onsager algebra recently proposed by R.Baxter. For each pair of spaces (Onsager sectors) of the irreducible representations of the Onsager algebra, we calculate the spin matrix elements between the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian of the quantum chain in factorized form, up to an overall scalar factor. This factor is known for the ground state Onsager sectors. For the matrix elements between the ground states of t…
We present an exact renormalization group analysis of the Loschmidt amplitude of the quantum $N$-state Potts chain with random quench-disordered nearest neighbor bonds, under the extreme dynamical quantum quench. We prove that the phase transition of the Loschmidt rate function remains sharp in general. For typical bond distributions, the phase transition is found to be a linear-cusp, as in the pure model. For some special discrete bond distributions, however, the rate function exhibits logarithmic divergences. These singularities are due to the competition between the non-critical dynamical p…
We study phase-transitions of the ferromagnetic $q$-state Potts chain with random nearest-neighbour couplings having a variance $Δ^2$ and with homogeneous long-range interactions, which decay with the distance as a power $r^{-(1+σ)}$, $σ>0$. In the large-$q$ limit the free-energy of random samples of length $L \le 2048$ is calculated exactly by a combinatorial optimization algorithm. The phase-transition stays first-order for $σ< σ_c(Δ) \le 0.5$, while the correlation length becomes divergent at the transition point for $σ_c(Δ) < σ< 1$. In the latter regime the average magnetization is continu…
Helix-coil transition in polypeptides is an example of a spin model with a preferred spin direction, in the sense that a theoretical formulation of this problem requires to assign a preferred value of spin to the helical conformation in order to account for different symmetries of the helical {\sl vs.} the coil states. This leads to the spin Hamiltonian of the {\sl Generalized Model of Polypeptide Chain} (GMPC) variety as opposed to the Potts model variety, both with many-body interactions. We compare the explicit solution of the Potts model and the solution of the GMPC within the transfer-mat…
We study the critical behavior of the random q-state Potts quantum chain by density matrix renormalization techniques. Critical exponents are calculated by scaling analysis of finite lattice data of short chains ($L \leq 16$) averaging over all possible realizations of disorder configurations chosen according to a binary distribution. Our numerical results show that the critical properties of the model are independent of q in agreement with a renormalization group analysis of Senthil and Majumdar (Phys. Rev. Lett.{\bf 76}, 3001 (1996)). We show how an accurate analysis of moments of the distri…
By relating the ground state of Temperley-Lieb hamiltonians to partition functions of 2D statistical mechanics systems on a half plane, and using a boundary Coulomb gas formalism, we obtain in closed form the valence bond entanglement entropy as well as the valence bond probability distribution in these ground states. We find in particular that for the XXX spin chain, the number N_c of valence bonds connecting a subsystem of size L to the outside goes, in the thermodynamic limit, as <N_c> = (4/pi^2) ln L, disproving a recent conjecture that this should be related with the von Neumann entropy, …
We investigate finite-size effects in quantum systems at first-order quantum transitions. For this purpose we consider the one-dimensional q-state Potts models which undergo a first-order quantum transition for any q>4, separating the quantum disordered and ordered phases with a discontinuity in the energy density of the ground state. The low-energy properties around the transition show finite-size scaling, described by general scaling ansatzes with respect to appropriate scaling variables. The size dependence of the scaling variables presents a particular sensitiveness to boundary conditions,…
We present exact calculations of chromatic polynomials for families of cyclic graphs consisting of linked polygons, where the polygons may be adjacent or separated by a given number of bonds. From these we calculate the (exponential of the) ground state entropy, $W$, for the q-state Potts model on these graphs in the limit of infinitely many vertices. A number of properties are proved concerning the continuous locus, ${\cal B}$, of nonanalyticities in $W$. Our results provide further evidence for a general rule concerning the maximal region in the complex q plane to which one can analytically …
We demonstrate that the transfer matrix of the inhomogeneous $N$-state chiral Potts model with two vertical superintegrable rapidities serves as the $Q$-operator of XXZ chain model for a cyclic representation of $U_{\sf q}(sl_2)$ with $N$th root-of-unity ${\sf q}$ and representation-parameter for odd $N$. The symmetry problem of XXZ chain with a general cyclic $U_{\sf q}(sl_2)$-representation is mapped onto the problem of studying $Q$-operator of some special one-parameter family of generalized $τ^{(2)}$-models. In particular, the spin-$\frac{N-1}{2}$ XXZ chain model with ${\sf q}^N=1$ and the…
We consider the groundstate wave function and spectra of the $L$-site XXZ $U_q[s\ell(2)]$ invariant quantum spin chain with $q=\exp(πi/3)$. This chain is related to the critical Q=1 Potts model and exhibits $c=0$ conformal invariance. We show that the problem is related to Hamiltonians describing one-dimensional stochastic processes defined on a Temperley-Lieb algebra. The bra groundstate wave function is trivial and the ket groundstate wave function gives the probabilty distribution of the stationary state. The stochastic processes can be understood as interface RSOS growth models with nonloc…
The random field q-States Potts model is investigated using exact groundstates and finite-temperature transfer matrix calculations. It is found that the domain structure and the Zeeman energy of the domains resembles for general q the random field Ising case (q=2), which is also the expectation based on a random-walk picture of the groundstate. The domain size distribution is exponential, and the scaling of the average domain size with the disorder strength is similar for q arbitrary. The zero-temperature properties are compared to the equilibrium spin states at small temperatures, to investig…
The hamiltonian of the $N$-state superintegrable chiral Potts (SICP) model is written in terms of a coupled algebra defined by $N-1$ types of Temperley-Lieb generators. This generalises a previous result for $N=3$ obtained by J. F. Fjelstad and T. Månsson [J. Phys. A {\bf 45} (2012) 155208]. A pictorial representation of a related coupled algebra is given for the $N=3$ case which involves a generalisation of the pictorial presentation of the Temperley-Lieb algebra to include a pole around which loops can become entangled. For the two known representations of this algebra, the $N=3$ SICP chain …
We consider Potts model hypersurfaces defined by the multivariate Tutte polynomial of graphs (Potts model partition function). We focus on the behavior of the number of points over finite fields for these hypersurfaces, in comparison with the graph hypersurfaces of perturbative quantum field theory defined by the Kirchhoff graph polynomial. We give a very simple example of the failure of the "fibration condition" in the dependence of the Grothendieck class on the number of spin states and of the polynomial countability condition for these Potts model hypersurfaces. We then show that a period c…
We present a detailed study of the finite temperature dynamical properties of the quantum Potts model in one dimension.Quasiparticle excitations in this model have internal quantum numbers, and their scattering matrix {\gf deep} in the gapped phases is shown to take a simple {\gf exchange} form in the perturbative regimes. The finite temperature correlation functions in the quantum critical regime are determined using conformal invariance, while {\gf far from the quantum critical point} we compute the decay functions analytically within a semiclassical approach of Sachdev and Damle [K. Damle a…
We perform a Random Matrix Theory (RMT) analysis of the quantum four-state chiral Potts chain for different sizes of the chain up to size L=8. Our analysis gives clear evidence of a Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble statistics, suggesting the existence of a generalized time-reversal invariance. Furthermore a change from the (generic) GOE distribution to a Poisson distribution occurs when the integrability conditions are met. The chiral Potts model is known to correspond to a (star-triangle) integrability associated with curves of genus higher than zero or one. Therefore, the RMT analysis can also b…
We present a simple yet generic model for the behavior of a system of many surface-attached flexible polymers with rigid side chains. Beyond its potential application in describing the dynamics of the extracellular matrix of mammalian cells, the model itself shows an interesting phase transition behavior since the underlying models (a two-dimensional Potts model and a XY-model) undergo different phase transitions.
The folding of a peptide chain into a three dimensional structure is a thermodynamically driven process such that the chain naturally evolves to form domains of similar amino acids. The formation of this domain occurs by curling the one dimensional amino acid sequence by moving similar amino acids proximity to each other. We model this formation of domains or ordering of amino acids using q-state Potts model and study the thermodynamic properties using a statistical mechanics approach. Converting the interacting amino acids into an effectively non-interacting model using a mean-field theory, w…
In recent years, programmable Rydberg-atom arrays have been widely used to simulate new quantum phases and phase transitions, generating great interest among theorists and experimentalists. Based on the large-scale density matrix renormalization group method, the ground-state phase diagram of one-dimensional Rydberg chains is investigated with fidelity susceptibility as an efficient diagnostic method. We find that the competition between Rydberg blockade and external detuning produces unconventional phases and phase transitions. As the Rydberg blockade radius increases, the phase transition be…
We identify the precise relationship between the five-parameter $τ^{(2)}$-family in the $N$-state chiral Potts model and XXZ chains with $U_q (sl_2)$-cyclic representation. By studying the Yang-Baxter relation of the six-vertex model, we discover an one-parameter family of $L$-operators in terms of the quantum group $U_q (sl_2)$. When $N$ is odd, the $N$-state $τ^{(2)}$-model can be regarded as the XXZ chain of $U_{\sf q} (sl_2)$ cyclic representations with ${\sf q}^N=1$. The symmetry algebra of the $τ^{(2)}$-model is described by the quantum affine algebra $U_{\sf q} (\hat{sl}_2)$ via the can…
We consider the field theory describing the scaling limit of the Potts quantum spin chain using a combination of two approaches. The first is the renormalized truncated conformal space approach (TCSA), while the second one is a new thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) system for the excited state spectrum in finite volume. For the TCSA we investigate and clarify several aspects of the renormalization procedure and counter term construction. The TBA system is first verified by comparing its ultraviolet limit to conformal field theory and the infrared limit to exact S-matrix predictions. We then sho…
In this paper a hithertho unknown symmetry of the three-state chiral Potts model is found consisting of two coupled Temperley-Lieb algebras. From these we can construct new superintegrable models. One realisation is in terms of a staggered isotropic XY spin chain. Further we investigate the importance of the algebra for the existence of mutually commuting charges. This leads us to a natural generalisation of the boost-operator, which generates the charges.
A one-dimensional (1D) $q$-state Potts model with $N$ sites, $m$-site interaction $K$ in a field $H$ is studied for arbitrary values of $m$. Exact results for the partition function and the two-point correlation function are obtained at $H=0$. The system in a field is shown to be self-dual. Using a change of Potts variables, it is mapped onto a standard 2D Potts model, with first-neighbour interactions $K$ and $H$, on a cylinder with helical boundary conditions (BC). The 2D system has a length $N/m$ and a transverse size $m$. Thus the Potts chain with multi-site interactions is expected to dev…
Using the corner-transfer matrix renormalization group approach, we revisit the three-state chiral Potts model on the square lattice, a model proposed in the eighties to describe commensurate-incommensurate transitions at surfaces, and with direct relevance to recent experiments on chains of Rydberg atoms. This model was suggested by Huse and Fisher to have a chiral transition in the vicinity of the Potts point, a possibility that turned out to be very difficult to definitely establish or refute numerically. Our results confirm that the transition changes character at a Lifshitz point that sep…
Some quantum critical states cannot be smoothly deformed into each other without either crossing some multicritical points or explicitly breaking certain symmetries even if they belong to the same universality class. This brings up the notion of ``symmetry-enriched'' quantum criticality. While recent works in the literature focused on critical states with robust degenerate edge modes, we propose that the conformal boundary condition (b.c.) is a more generic characteristic of such quantum critical states. We show that in two families of quantum spin chains, which generalize the Ising and the th…
Phase transition in the two-dimensional $q$-state Potts model with random ferromagnetic couplings in the large-q limit is conjectured to be described by the isotropic version of the infinite randomness fixed point of the random transverse-field Ising spin chain. This is supported by extensive numerical studies with a combinatorial optimization algorithm giving estimates for the critical exponents in accordance with the conjectured values: $β=(3-\sqrt{5})/4$, $β_s=1/2$ and $ν=1$. The specific heat has a logarithmic singularity, but at the transition point there are very strong sample-to-sample …
We discover an Ising-type duality in the general $N$-state chiral Potts model, which is the Kramers-Wannier duality of planar Ising model when N=2. This duality relates the spectrum and eigenvectors of one chiral Potts model at a low temperature (of small $k'$) to those of another chiral Potts model at a high temperature (of $k'^{-1}$). The $τ^{(2)}$-model and chiral Potts model on the dual lattice are established alongside the dual chiral Potts models. With the aid of this duality relation, we exact a precise relationship between the Onsager-algebra symmetry of a homogeneous superintegrable c…
We investigate the self-dual three-state quantum chain with nearest-neighbor interactions and $S_3$, time-reversal, and parity symmetries. We find a rich phase diagram including gapped phases with order-disorder coexistence, integrable critical points with U(1) symmetry, and ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic critical regions described by three-state Potts and free-boson conformal field theories respectively. We also find an unusual critical phase which appears to be described by combining two conformal field theories with distinct "Fermi velocities". The order-disorder coexistence phase has …
We describe an approach to the study of phase transitions in Potts models based on an estimate of the complexity of the locus of real zeros of the partition function, computed in terms of the classes in the Grothendieck ring of the affine algebraic varieties defined by the vanishing of the multivariate Tutte polynomial. We give completely explicit calculations for the examples of the chains of linked polygons and of the graphs obtained by replacing the polygons with their dual graphs. These are based on a deletion-contraction formula for the Grothendieck classes and on generating functions for…
We construct the fusion operators in the generalized $τ^{(2)}$-model using the fused $L$-operators, and verify the fusion relations with the truncation identity. The algebraic Bethe ansatz discussion is conducted on two special classes of $τ^{(2)}$ which include the superintegrable chiral Potts model. We then perform the parallel discussion on the XXZ spin chain at roots of unity, and demonstrate that the $sl_2$-loop-algebra symmetry exists for the root-of-unity XXZ spin chain with a higher spin, where the evaluation parameters for the symmetry algebra are identified by the explicit Fabricius-…
The Ma-Dasgupta-Hu renormalization group (RG) scheme is used to study singular quantities in the Griffiths phase of random quantum spin chains. For the random transverse-field Ising spin chain we have extended Fisher's analytical solution to the off-critical region and calculated the dynamical exponent exactly. Concerning other random chains we argue by scaling considerations that the RG method generally becomes asymptotically exact for large times, both at the critical point and in the whole Griffiths phase. This statement is checked via numerical calculations on the random Heisenberg and qua…
We construct local generalizations of 3-state Potts models with exotic critical points. We analytically show that these are described by non-diagonal modular invariant partition functions of products of $Z_3$ parafermion or $u(1)_6$ conformal field theories (CFTs). These correspond either to non-trivial permutation invariants or block diagonal invariants, that one can understand in terms of anyon condensation. In terms of lattice parafermion operators, the constructed models correspond to parafermion chains with many-body terms. Our construction is based on how the partition function of a CFT …
We study the $q$-state ferromagnetic Potts model on the $n$-vertex complete graph known as the mean-field (Curie-Weiss) model. We analyze the Swendsen-Wang algorithm which is a Markov chain that utilizes the random cluster representation for the ferromagnetic Potts model to recolor large sets of vertices in one step and potentially overcomes obstacles that inhibit single-site Glauber dynamics. Long et al. studied the case $q=2$, the Swendsen-Wang algorithm for the mean-field ferromagnetic Ising model, and showed that the mixing time satisfies: (i) $Θ(1)$ for $β<β_c$, (ii) $Θ(n^{1/4})$ for $β=β…
The phase transition in the q-state Potts model with homogeneous ferromagnetic couplings is strongly first order for large q, while is rounded in the presence of quenched disorder. Here we study this phenomenon on different two-dimensional lattices by using the fact that the partition function of the model is dominated by a single diagram of the high-temperature expansion, which is calculated by an efficient combinatorial optimization algorithm. For a given finite sample with discrete randomness the free energy is a pice-wise linear function of the temperature, which is rounded after averaging…

We present a field-theoretic renormalization group (RG) analysis of a single flexible, screened polyelectrolyte chain (a Debye-Hückel chain) in a polar solvent. We point out that the Debye-Hückel chain may be mapped onto a local field theory which has the same fixed point as a generalised $n \to 1$ Potts model. Systematic analysis of the field theory shows that the system is one with two interplaying length-scales requiring the calculation of scaling functions as well as exponents to fully describe its physical behaviour. To illustrate this, we solve the RG equation and explicitly calculate th…
We investigate the phase transition properties of the polymer-Potts model, a chain composed of monomers with magnetic degrees of freedom, with the motivation to study the conformation and mark switching dynamics of chromatin. By the mean-field approximation, we find that the phase transition between the swollen-disordered state and the compact-ordered state is discrete; it is first-order as in the long-range Potts model, but with a significantly larger jump in magnetization (i.e., mark coherence) upon the ordering transition. The results imply how small changes in epigenetic writer concentrati…
We study the non-equilibrium phase structure of the three-state random quantum Potts model in one dimension. This spin chain is characterized by a non-Abelian $D_3$ symmetry recently argued to be incompatible with the existence of a symmetry-preserving many-body localized (MBL) phase. Using exact diagonalization and a finite-size scaling analysis, we find that the model supports two distinct broken-symmetry MBL phases at strong disorder that either break the ${\mathbb{Z}_3}$ clock symmetry or a ${\mathbb{Z}_2}$ chiral symmetry. In a dual formulation, our results indicate the existence of a sta…
It is demonstrated that the scaled order parameter for ferromagnetic Ising and three-state Potts chains with inverse-square interactions exhibits a universal critical jump, in analogy with the superfluid density in helium films. Renormalization-group arguments are combined with numerical simulations of systems containing up to one million lattice sites to accurately determine the critical properties of these models. In strong contrast with earlier work, compelling quantitative evidence for the Kosterlitz--Thouless-like character of the phase transition is provided.
An existing conjecture states that the Shannon mutual information contained in the ground state wavefunction of conformally invariant quantum chains, on periodic lattices, has a leading finite-size scaling behavior that, similarly as the von Neumann entanglement entropy, depends on the value of the central charge of the underlying conformal field theory describing the physical properties. This conjecture applies whenever the ground state wavefunction is expressed in some special basis (conformal basis). Its formulation comes mainly from numerical evidences on exactly integrable quantum chains.…
We consider a lattice version of the Bisognano-Wichmann (BW) modular Hamiltonian as an ansatz for the bipartite entanglement Hamiltonian of the quantum critical chains. Using numerically unbiased methods, we check the accuracy of the BW-ansatz by both comparing the BW Rényi entropy to the exact results, and by investigating the size scaling of the norm distance between the exact reduced density matrix and the BW one. Our study encompasses a variety of models, scanning different universality classes, including transverse field Ising, Potts and XXZ chains. We show that the Rényi entropies obtain…
