The entanglement entropy, ${\cal S}$, is an indicator of quantum correlations in the ground state of a many body quantum system. At a second-order quantum phase-transition point in one dimension ${\cal S}$ generally has a logarithmic singularity. Here we consider quantum spin chains with a first-order quantum phase transition, the prototype being the $Q$-state quantum Potts chain for $Q>4$ and calculate ${\cal S}$ across the transition point. According to numerical, density matrix renormalization group results at the first-order quantum phase transition point ${\cal S}$ shows a jump, which is expected to vanish for $Q \to 4^+$. This jump is calculated in leading order as $Δ{\cal S}=\ln Q[1-4/Q-2/(Q \ln Q)+{\cal O}(1/Q^2)]$.
We introduce a method to measure the entanglement entropy using a wavelet analysis. In the method we perform the two-dimensional Haar wavelet transform of configuration of Fortuin-Kasteleyn (FK) clusters. The configuration represents a direct snapshot of spin-spin correlations since spin degrees of freedom are traced out in FK representation. A snapshot of FK clusters loses image information at each coarse-graining process by the wavelet transform. We show that the loss of image information measures the entanglement entropy in the Potts model.
We present generalized methods for calculating lower bounds on the ground-state entropy per site, $S_0$, or equivalently, the ground-state degeneracy per site, $W=e^{S_0/k_B}$, of the antiferromagnetic Potts model. We use these methods to derive improved lower bounds on $W$ for several lattices.
Recently, a non-trivial relation between the quasi-particle spectrum and entanglement entropy production was discovered in non-integrable quenches in the paramagnetic Ising quantum spin chain. Here we study the dynamics of analogous quenches in the quantum Potts spin chain. Tuning the parameters of the system, we observe a sudden increase in the entanglement production rate, which is shown to be related to the appearance of new quasiparticle excitations in the post-quench spectrum. Our results demonstrate the generality of the effect and support its interpretation as the non-equilibrium versio…
We calculate rigorous lower bounds for the ground state degeneracy per site, $W$, of the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet on slabs of the simple cubic lattice that are infinite in two directions and finite in the third and that thus interpolate between the square (sq) and simple cubic (sc) lattices. We give a comparison with large-$q$ series expansions for the sq and sc lattices and also present numerical comparisons.
In this paper, we apply the form factor bootstrap approach to branch point twist fields in the $q$-state Potts model for $q\leq 3$. For $q=3$ this is an integrable interacting quantum field theory with an internal discrete $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry and therefore provides an ideal starting point for the investigation of the symmetry resolved entanglement entropies. However, more generally, for $q\leq 3$ the standard Rényi and entanglement entropies are also accessible through the bootstrap programme. In our work we present form factor solutions both for the standard branch point twist field with …
We present exact calculations of the chromatic polynomial and resultant ground state entropy of the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet on lattice strips that are homeomorphic expansions of a strip of the kagome lattice. The dependence of the ground state entropy on the form of homeomorphic expansion is elucidated.
Boltzmann's microcanonical entropy is the link between statistical physics and thermodynamics, forasmuch as the behavior of any thermodynamic quantity is directly related to the number of microscopic configurations. Accordingly, in this work, we investigate the behavior of the logarithm of the density of states of the three-state Potts model with an external field applied to one of the states using joint entropic simulations based on the Wang-Landau algorithm. Our analysis reveals that the microcanonical entropy curve is detachable, and each resulting path is related to the formation of cluste…
The von Neumann entanglement entropy is used to estimate the critical point $h_c/J \simeq 0.143(3)$ of the mixed ferro-antiferromagnetic three-state quantum Potts model $H = \sum_i [ J ( X_i X_{i+1}^{\,2} + X_i^{\,2} X_{i+1} ) - h\, R_i ]$, where $X_i$ and $R_i$ are standard three-state Potts spin operators and $J>0$ is the antiferromagnetic coupling parameter. This critical point value gives improved estimates for two Kosterlitz-Thouless transition points in the antiferromagnetic ($β< 0$) region of the $Δ$--$β$ phase diagram of the three-state quantum chiral clock model, where $Δ$ and $β$ are…
Understanding nonequilibrium systems and the consequences of irreversibility for the system's behavior as compared to the equilibrium case, is a fundamental question in statistical physics. Here, we investigate two types of nonequilbrium phase transitions, a second-order and an infinite-order phase transition, in a prototypical q-state vector Potts model which is driven out of equilibrium by coupling the spins to heat baths at two different temperatures. We discuss the behavior of the quantities that are typically considered in the vicinity of (equilibrium) phase transitions, like the specific…
We consider the random-bond Potts model in the large-$Q$ limit and calculate the excess entropy, $S_Γ$, of a contour, $Γ$, which is given by the mean number of Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters which are crossed by $Γ$. In two dimensions $S_Γ$ is proportional to the length of $Γ$, to which - at the critical point - there are universal logarithmic corrections due to corners. These are calculated by applying techniques of conformal field theory and compared with the results of large scale numerical calculations. The central charge of the model is obtained from the corner contributions to the excess ent…
Phase transitions abound in nature and society, and, from species extinction to stock market collapse, their prediction is of widespread importance. In earlier work we showed that Global Transfer Entropy, a general measure of information flow, was found to peak away from the transition on the disordered side for the Ising model, a canonical second-order transition. Here we show that (a) global transfer entropy also peaks on the disordered side of the transition of finite first-order transitions, i.e., those which have finite latent heat and no correlation length divergence, such as ecology dyn…
Here we consider a one-dimensional $q$-state Potts model with an external magnetic field and an anisotropic interaction that selects neighboring sites that are in the spin state 1. The present model exhibits an unusual behavior in the low-temperature region, where we observe an anomalous vigorous change in the entropy for a given temperature. There is a steep behavior at a given temperature in entropy as a function of temperature, quite similar to first-order discontinuity, but there is no jump in the entropy. Similarly, second derivative quantities like specific heat and magnetic susceptibili…
Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) have been used extensively to understand the physics of critical lattice models at equilibrium. However, the applicability of CFT calculations to the behavior of the lattice systems in the out-of-equilibrium setting is not entirely understood. In this work, we compare the CFT results of the evolution of the entanglement spectrum after a quantum quench with numerical calculations of the entanglement spectrum of the three-state Potts model using matrix product state simulations. Our results lead us to conjecture that CFT does not describe the entanglement spectrum…
Evaporation/condensation transition of the Potts model on square lattice is numerically investigated by the Wang-Landau sampling method. Intrinsically system size dependent discrete transition between supersaturation state and phase-separation state is observed in the microcanonical ensemble by changing constrained internal energy. We calculate the microcanonical temperature, as a derivative of microcanonical entropy, and condensation ratio, and perform a finite size scaling of them to indicate clear tendency of numerical data to converge to the infinite size limit predicted by phenomenologica…
We investigate a 4-state ferromagnetic Potts model with a special type of geometrical frustration on a three dimensional diamond lattice by means of Wang-Landau Monte Carlo simulation motivated by a peculiar structural phase transition found in $β$-pyrochlore oxide KOs$_2$O$_6$. We find that this model undergoes unconventional first-order phase transition; half of the spins in the system order in a two dimensional hexagonal-sheet-like structure, while the remaining half stay disordered. The ordered sheets and the disordered sheets stack one after another. We obtain a fairly large residual entr…
We investigate the nature of the phase transition of the ferromagnetic Potts model with invisible states. The ferromagnetic Potts model with invisible states can be regarded as straightforward extension of the standard ferromagnetic Potts model. The invisible states contribute the entropy, however they do not affect the internal energy. They also do not change the symmetry which breaks at the transition temperature. The invisible states stimulate a first-order phase transition. We confirm that the first-order phase transition with spontaneous $q$-fold symmetry breaking for $q=2,3$, and 4 takes…
We study phase transition in the ferromagnetic Potts model with invisible states that are added as redundant states by mean-field calculation and Monte Carlo simulation. Invisible states affect the entropy and the free energy, although they do not contribute to the internal energy. The internal energy and the number of degenerated ground states do not change, if invisible states are introduced into the standard Potts model. A second-order phase transition takes place at finite temperature in the standard $q$-state ferromagnetic Potts model on two-dimensional lattice for $q=2,3$, and 4. However…
Spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) in statistical physics is a macroscopic collective phenomenon. For the paradigmatic Q-state Potts model it means a transition from the disordered color-symmetric phase to an ordered phase in which one color dominates. Existing mean field theories imply that SSB in the microcanonical statistical ensemble (with energy being the control parameter) should be a continuous process. Here we study microcanonical SSB on the random-graph Potts model, and discover that the entropy is a kinked function of energy. This kink leads to a discontinuous phase transition at ce…
We generalize the classical one dimensional Potts model to the case where the symmetry group is a non-Abelian finite group. It turns out that this new model has a quantum nature in that its spectrum of energy eigenstates consists of entangled states. We determine the complete energy spectrum, i.e. the ground states and all the excited states with their degeneracy structure. We calculate the partition function by two different algebraic and combinatorial methods. We also determine the entanglement properties of its ground states.
We evaluate the thermodynamic properties of the 4-state antiferromagnetic Potts model on the Union- Jack lattice using tensor-based numerical methods. We present strong evidence for a previously unknown, "entropy-driven," finite-temperature phase transition to a partially ordered state. From the thermodynamics of Potts models on the diced and centered diced lattices, we propose that finite-temperature transitions and partially ordered states are ubiquitous on irregular lattices.
We present the exact solution of the 1D classical short-range Potts model with invisible states. Besides the $q$ states of the ordinary Potts model, this possesses $r$ additional states which contribute to the entropy, but not to the interaction energy. We determine the partition function, using the transfer-matrix method, in the general case of two ordering fields: $h_1$ acting on a visible state and $h_2$ on an invisible state. We analyse its zeros in the complex-temperature plane in the case that $h_1=0$. When ${\rm Im}\, h_2=0$ and $r\ge 0$, these zeros accumulate along a line that interse…
The Potts model plays an essential role in classical statistical mechanics, illustrating many fundamental phenomena. One example is the existence of partially long-range-ordered states, in which some degrees of freedom remain disordered. This situation may arise from frustration of the interactions, but also from an irregular but unfrustrated lattice structure. We study partial long-range order in a range of antiferromagnetic $q$-state Potts models on different two-dimensional lattices and for all relevant values of $q$. We exploit the power of tensor-based numerical methods to evaluate the pa…
In this paper, we develop a general theory for the estimation of the transition probabilities of reversible Markov chains using the maximum entropy principle. A broad range of physical models can be studied within this approach. We use one-dimensional classical spin systems to illustrate the theoretical ideas. The examples studied in this paper are: the Ising model, the Potts model and the Blume-Emery-Griffiths model.
We study the time evolution of entanglement entropy and entanglement spectrum in a finite-size system which crosses a quantum phase transition at different speeds. We focus on the Ising model with a time-dependent magnetic field, which is linearly tuned on a time scale $τ$ . The time evolution of the entanglement entropy displays different regimes depending on the value of $τ$, showing also oscillations which depend on the instantaneous energy spectrum. The entanglement spectrum is characterized by a rich dynamics where multiple crossings take place with a gap-dependent frequency. Moreover, we…
Different models are proposed to understand magnetic phase transitions through the prism of competition between the energy and the entropy. One of such models is a $q$-state Potts model with invisible states. This model introduces $r$ invisible states such that if a spin lies in one of them, it does not interact with the rest states. We consider such a model using the mean field approximation on an annealed scale-free network where the probability of a randomly chosen vertex having a degree $k$ is governed by the power-law $P(k)\propto k^{-λ}$. Our results confirm that $q$, $r$ and $λ$ play a …
The frustrated q-state Potts model is solved exactly on a hierarchical lattice, yielding chaos under rescaling, namely the signature of a spin-glass phase, as previously seen for the Ising (q=2) model. However, the ground-state entropy introduced by the (q>2)-state antiferromagnetic Potts bond induces an escape from chaos as multiplicity q increases. The frustration versus multiplicity phase diagram has a reentrant (as a function of frustration) chaotic phase.
We study the famous example of weakly first order phase transitions in the 1+1D quantum Q-state Potts model at Q>4. We numerically show that these weakly first order transitions have approximately conformal invariance. Specifically, we find entanglement entropy on considerably large system sizes fits perfectly with the universal scaling law of this quantity in the conformal field theories (CFTs). This supports that the weakly first order transitions is proximate to complex fixed points, which are described by recent conjectured complex CFTs. Moreover, the central charge extracted from this fit…
