We investigate the nature of the phase transition of the ferromagnetic Potts model with invisible states. The ferromagnetic Potts model with invisible states can be regarded as straightforward extension of the standard ferromagnetic Potts model. The invisible states contribute the entropy, however they do not affect the internal energy. They also do not change the symmetry which breaks at the transition temperature. The invisible states stimulate a first-order phase transition. We confirm that the first-order phase transition with spontaneous $q$-fold symmetry breaking for $q=2,3$, and 4 takes place even on two-dimensional lattice by Monte Carlo simulation. We also find that the transition temperature decreases and the latent heat increases as the number of invisible states increases.
Potts Models with Invisible States on General Bethe Lattices
Different models are proposed to understand magnetic phase transitions through the prism of competition between the energy and the entropy. One of such models is a $q$-state Potts model with invisible states. This model introduces $r$ invisible states such that if a spin lies in one of them, it does not interact with the rest states. We consider such a model using the mean field approximation on an annealed scale-free network where the probability of a randomly chosen vertex having a degree $k$ is governed by the power-law $P(k)\propto k^{-λ}$. Our results confirm that $q$, $r$ and $λ$ play a …
We present the exact solution of the 1D classical short-range Potts model with invisible states. Besides the $q$ states of the ordinary Potts model, this possesses $r$ additional states which contribute to the entropy, but not to the interaction energy. We determine the partition function, using the transfer-matrix method, in the general case of two ordering fields: $h_1$ acting on a visible state and $h_2$ on an invisible state. We analyse its zeros in the complex-temperature plane in the case that $h_1=0$. When ${\rm Im}\, h_2=0$ and $r\ge 0$, these zeros accumulate along a line that interse…
Using Monte Carlo simulations in the frame of stochastic series expansion (SSE), we study the three-state quantum Potts model. The cluster algorithm we used is a direct generalization of that for the quantum Ising model. The simulations include the one dimensional and two dimensional ferromagnetic three-state quantum Potts model and the two dimensional antiferromagnetic three-state quantum Potts model. Our results show that the phase transition of the one dimensional ferromagnetic quantum Potts model belongs to the same universality class of the two dimensional classical Potts model, the two d…
We reconsider the mean-field Potts model with $q$ interacting and $r$ non-interacting (invisible) states. The model was recently introduced to explain discrepancies between theoretical predictions and experimental observations of phase transitions in some systems where the $Z_q$-symmetry is spontaneously broken. We analyse the marginal dimensions of the model, i.e., the value of $r$ at which the order of the phase transition changes. In the $q=2$ case, we determine that value to be $r_c = 3.65(5)$; there is a second-order phase transition there when $r<r_c$ and a first-order one at $r>r_c$. We…
Yang-Lee zeros of the one-dimensional Q-state Potts model
We study the $q$ states Potts model with four site interaction on the square lattice. Based on the asymptotic behaviour of lattice animals, it is argued that when $q\leq 4$ the system exhibits a second-order phase transition, and when $q > 4$ the transition is first order. The $q=4$ model is borderline. We find ${1}/{\ln q}$ to be an upper bound on $T_c$, the exact critical temperature. Using a low-temperature expansion, we show that $1/(θ\ln q)$, where $θ>1$ is a $q$-dependent geometrical term, is an improved upper bound on $T_c$. In fact, our findings support $T_c=1/(θ\ln q)$. This expressio…
By controlling the vortex core energy, the three-state ferromagnetic Potts model can exhibit two types of topological paradigms, including the quasi-long-range ordered phase and the vortex lattice phase [PRL 116, 097206 (2016)]. Here, by Monte Carlo simulations using an effective worm algorithm, we show that by controlling the vortex core energy, the antiferromagnetic Potts model can also exhibit the two topological phases, more interestingly, the two topological phases can overlap with each other.
Phase transitions are ubiquitous phenomena, exemplified by the melting of ice and spontaneous magnetization of magnetic material. In general, a phase transition is associated with a symmetry breaking of a system; occurs due to the competition between coupling interaction and external fields such as thermal energy. If the phase transition occurs with no latent heat, the system experiences continuous transition, also known as second order phase transition. The ferromagnetic $q$-state Potts model with $r$ extra invisible states, introduced by Tamura, Tanaka, and Kawashima [Prog. Theor. Phys. 124,…
We investigate the phase transitions of the $q$-state Brownian Potts model in two dimensions (2d) comprising Potts spins that diffuse like Brownian particles and interact ferromagnetically with other spins within a fixed distance. With extensive Monte Carlo simulations we find a continuous phase transition from a paramagnetic to a ferromagnetic phase even for $q>4$. This is in sharp contrast to the existence of a discontinuous phase transition in the equilibrium $q$-state Potts model in 2d with $q>4$. We present detailed numerical evidence for a continuous phase transition and argue that diffu…
A combinatorial approach is used to study the critical behavior of a $q$-state Potts model with a round-the-face interaction. Using this approach it is shown that the model exhibits a first order transition for $q>3$. A second order transition is numerically detected for $q=2$. Based on these findings, it is deduced that for some two-dimensional ferromagnetic Potts models with completely local interaction, there is a changeover in the transition order at a critical integer $q_c\leq 3$. This stands in contrast to the standard two-spin interaction Potts model where the maximal integer value for …
The chiral spin-glass Potts system with q=3 states is studied in d=2 and 3 spatial dimensions by renormalization-group theory and the global phase diagrams are calculated in temperature, chirality concentration p, and chirality-breaking concentration c, with determination of phase chaos and phase-boundary chaos. In d=3, the system has ferromagnetic, left-chiral, right-chiral, chiral spin-glass, and disordered phases. The phase boundaries to the ferromagnetic, left- and right-chiral phases show, differently, an unusual, fibrous patchwork (microreentrances) of all four (ferromagnetic, left-chira…
We consider the Ising Field Theory (IFT), and the 3-state Potts Field Theory (PFT), which describe the scaling limits of the two- dimensional lattice q-state Potts model with q=2, and q=3, respectively. At zero magnetic field h=0, both field theories are integrable away from the critical point, have q degenerate vacua in the ferromagnetic phase, and q(q-1) particles of the same mass - the kinks interpolating between two different vacua. Application of a weak magnetic field induces confinement of kinks into bound states - the mesons (for q =2,3) consisting predominantly of two kinks, and baryon…
We study the $q$-state ferromagnetic Potts model on the $n$-vertex complete graph known as the mean-field (Curie-Weiss) model. We analyze the Swendsen-Wang algorithm which is a Markov chain that utilizes the random cluster representation for the ferromagnetic Potts model to recolor large sets of vertices in one step and potentially overcomes obstacles that inhibit single-site Glauber dynamics. Long et al. studied the case $q=2$, the Swendsen-Wang algorithm for the mean-field ferromagnetic Ising model, and showed that the mixing time satisfies: (i) $Θ(1)$ for $β<β_c$, (ii) $Θ(n^{1/4})$ for $β=β…
We study the q-state Potts model on the simple cubic lattice with ferromagnetic interactions in one lattice direction, and antiferromagnetic interactions in the two other directions. As the temperature T decreases, the system undergoes a second-order phase transition that fits in the universality class of the 3D O(n) model with n=q-1. This conclusion is based on the estimated critical exponents, and histograms of the order parameter. At even smaller T we find, for q=4 and 5, a first-order transition to a phase with a different type of long-range order. This long-range order dissolves at T=0, a…
We study phase transitions of the Potts model on the centered-triangular lattice with two types of couplings, namely $K$ between neighboring triangular sites, and $J$ between the centered and the triangular sites. Results are obtained by means of a finite-size analysis based on numerical transfer matrix calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. Our investigation covers the whole $(K, J)$ phase diagram, but we find that most of the interesting physics applies to the antiferromagnetic case $K<0$, where the model is geometrically frustrated. In particular, we find that there are, for all finite $…
We study phase-transitions of the ferromagnetic $q$-state Potts chain with random nearest-neighbour couplings having a variance $Δ^2$ and with homogeneous long-range interactions, which decay with the distance as a power $r^{-(1+σ)}$, $σ>0$. In the large-$q$ limit the free-energy of random samples of length $L \le 2048$ is calculated exactly by a combinatorial optimization algorithm. The phase-transition stays first-order for $σ< σ_c(Δ) \le 0.5$, while the correlation length becomes divergent at the transition point for $σ_c(Δ) < σ< 1$. In the latter regime the average magnetization is continu…
We study the active 4-state Potts model (APM) on the square lattice in which active particles have four internal states corresponding to the four directions of motion. A local alignment rule inspired by the ferromagnetic 4-state Potts model and self-propulsion via biased diffusion according to the internal particle states leads to flocking at high densities and low noise. We compute the phase diagram of the APM and explore the flocking dynamics in the region, in which the high-density (liquid) phase coexists with the low-density (gas) phase and forms a fluctuating band of coherently moving par…
We analyze a three-state Potts model built over a lattice ring, with coupling $J_0$, and the fully connected graph, with coupling $J$. This model is effectively mean-field and can be exactly solved by using transfer-matrix method and Cardano formula. When $J$ and $J_0$ are both ferromagnetic, the model has a first-order phase transition which turns out to be a smooth modification of the known phase transition of the traditional mean-field Potts model ($J_0=0$), despite, as we prove, the connected correlation functions are now non zero, even in the paramagnetic phase. Furthermore, besides the f…
