We have found an exact phase diagram of the Potts model with next nearest neighbor interactions on the Bethe lattice of order two. The diagram consists of five phases: ferromagnetic, paramagnetic, modulated, antiphase and paramodulated, all meeting at the Lifshitz point i.e. $p=1/3$. We report on a new phase which we denote as paramodulated, found at low temperatures and characterized by 2-periodic points of an one dimensional dynamical system lying inside the modulated phase. Such a phase, inherent in the Potts model has no analogues in the Ising setting.
The number of so-called invisible states which need to be added to the q-state Potts model to transmute its phase transition from continuous to first order has attracted recent attention. In the q=2 case, a Bragg-Williams, mean-field approach necessitates four such invisible states while a 3-regular, random-graph formalism requires seventeen. In both of these cases, the changeover from second- to first-order behaviour induced by the invisible states is identified through the tricritical point of an equivalent Blume-Emery-Griffiths model. Here we investigate the generalised Potts model on a Bet…
The Yang-Lee zeros of the Q-state Potts model on recursive lattices are studied for non-integer values of Q. Considering 1D lattice as a Bethe lattice with coordination number equal to two, the location of Yang-Lee zeros of 1D ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Potts models is completely analyzed in terms of neutral periodical points. Three different regimes for Yang-Lee zeros are found for Q>1 and 0<Q<1. An exact analytical formula for the equation of phase transition points is derived for the 1D case. It is shown that Yang-Lee zeros of the Q-state Potts model on a Bethe lattice are located …
We study the square-lattice three-state Potts model with the ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor coupling at finite temperature. Using the level-spectroscopy method, we numerically analyze the excitation spectrum of the transfer matrices and precisely determine the global phase diagram. Then we find that, contrary to a previous result based on the finite-size scaling, the massless region continues up to the decoupling point with ${\bf Z}_3\times{\bf Z}_3$ criticality in the antiferromagnetic region. We also check the universal relations among excitation levels to provide the reliability of our…
We establish the Bethe equation of the $τ^{(2)}$-model in the $N$-state chiral Potts model (including the degenerate selfdual cases) with alternating vertical rapidities. The eigenvalues of a finite-size transfer matrix of the chiral Potts model are computed by use of functional relations. The significance of the "alternating superintegrable" case of the chiral Potts model is discussed, and the degeneracy of $τ^{(2)}$-model found as in the homogeneous superintegrable chiral Potts model.
We present exact calculations of partition function $Z$ of the $q$-state Potts model with next-nearest-neighbor spin-spin couplings, both for the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic case, for arbitrary temperature, on $n$-vertex strip graphs of width $L_y=2$ of the square lattice with free, cyclic, and Möbius longitudinal boundary conditions. The free energy is calculated exactly for the infinite-length limit of these strip graphs and the thermodynamics is discussed. Considering the full generalization to arbitrary complex $q$ and temperature, we determine the singular locus ${\cal B}$ in the …
We examine the Onsager algebra symmetry of $τ^{(j)}$-matrices in the superintegrable chiral Potts model. The comparison of Onsager algebra symmetry of the chiral Potts model with the $sl_2$-loop algebra symmetry of six-vertex model at roots of unity is made from the aspect of functional relations using the $Q$-operator and fusion matrices. The discussion of Bethe ansatz for both models is conducted in a uniform manner through the evaluation parameters of their symmetry algebras.
We study magnetic polymers, defined as self-avoiding walks where each monomer $i$ carries a "spin'' $s_i$ and interacts with its first neighbor monomers, let us say $j$, via a coupling constant $J(s_i,s_j)$. Ising-like [$s_i = \pm 1$, with $J(s_i,s_j) = \varepsilon s_i s_j$] and Potts-like [$s_i = 1,\ldots,q$, with $J(s_i,s_j)=\varepsilon_{s_i} δ(s_i,s_j)$] models are investigated. Some particular cases of these systems have recently been studied in the continuum and on regular lattices, and are related to interesting applications. Here, we solve these models on Bethe lattices of ramification …
The most general cyclic representations of the quantum integrable tau_2-model are analyzed. The complete characterization of the tau_2-spectrum (eigenvalues and eigenstates) is achieved in the framework of Sklyanin's Separation of Variables (SOV) method by extending and adapting the ideas first introduced in [1, 2]: i) The determination of the tau_2-spectrum is reduced to the classification of the solutions of a given functional equation in a class of polynomials. ii) The determination of the tau_2-eigenstates is reduced to the classification of the solutions of an associated Baxter equation. …
In terms of the $\mathfrak{sl}_{2}$ loop algebra and the algebraic Bethe-ansatz method, we derive the invariant subspace associated with a given Ising-like spectrum consisting of $2^{r}$ eigenvalues of the diagonal-to-diagonal transfer matrix of the superintegrable chiral Potts (SCP) model with arbitrary inhomogeneous parameters. We show that every regular Bethe eigenstate of the $τ_2$-model leads to an Ising-like spectrum and is an eigenvector of the SCP transfer matrix which is given by the product of two diagonal-to-diagonal transfer matrices with a constraint on the spectral parameters. We…
We compute the correlation functions of the three state superintegrable chiral Potts spin chain for chains of length 3,4,5. From these results we present conjectures for the form of the nearest neighbor correlation function.
We provide an explicit formula for the limiting free energy density (log-partition function divided by the number of vertices) for ferromagnetic Potts models on uniformly sparse graph sequences converging locally to the d-regular tree for d even, covering all temperature regimes. This formula coincides with the Bethe free energy functional evaluated at a suitable fixed point of the belief propagation recursion on the d-regular tree, the so-called replica symmetric solution. For uniformly random d-regular graphs we further show that the replica symmetric Bethe formula is an upper bound for the …
The magnetic properties of the antiferromagnetic Potts model with two-site interaction and the antiferromagnetic Ising model with three-site interaction on recursive lattices have been studied. A cyclic period-3 window has been revealed by the recurrence relation method in the antiferromagnetic Q-state Potts model on the Bethe lattice (at Q<2) and in the antiferromagnetic Ising model with three-site interaction on the Husimi cactus. The Lyapunov exponents have been calculated, modulated phases and a chaotic regime in the cyclic period-3 window have been found for one-dimensional rational mappi…
We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function (chromatic polynomial) and $W(q)$, the exponent of the ground-state entropy, for the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet with next-nearest-neighbor spin-spin couplings on square lattice strips, of width $L_y=3$ and $L_y=4$ vertices and arbitrarily great length $L_x$ vertices, with both free and periodic boundary conditions. The resultant values of $W$ for a range of physical $q$ values are compared with each other and with the values for the full 2D lattice. These results give insight into the effect of such non-nearest neigh…
A model for the study of hysteresis and avalanches in a first-order phase transition from a single variant phase to a multivariant phase is presented. The model is based on a modification of the Random Field Potts model with metastable dynamics by adding a dipolar interaction term truncated at nearest neighbors. We focus our study on hysteresis loop properties, on the three-dimensional (3D) microstructure formation and on avalanche statistics.
This study present a Monte Carlo investigations of low-temperature magnetic ordering and phase transitions in three-state Potts model on triangular lattice with various exchange interactions between nearest (J1) and next-nearest (J2) neighbors. The density of states for varying J1 and J2 are calculated. The magnetic structure of the ground state for various J1 and J2 are obtained. The critical temperature are calculated and the order of the phase transition determined. The density of states difference (DOSD) and histogram analysis method are used to investigate the order of the phase transitio…
The statistical mechanics method is developed for determination of generating function of like-sign spin clusters' size distribution in Ising model as modification of Ising-Potts model by K. K. Murata (1979). It is applied to the ferromagnetic Ising model on Bethe lattice. The analytical results for the field-temperature percolation phase diagram of + spin clusters and their size distribution are obtained. The last appears to be proportional to that of the classical non-correlated bond percolation with the bond probability, which depends on temperature and Ising model parameters.
Using the Wang-Landau Monte Carlo method, we study the antiferromagnetic (AF) three-state Potts model with a staggered polarization field on the square lattice. We obtain two phase transitions; one belongs to the ferromagnetic three-state Potts universality class, and the other to the Ising universality class. The phase diagram obtained is quantitatively consistent with the transfer matrix calculation. The Ising transition in the large nearest-neighbor interaction limit has been made clear by the detailed analysis of the energy density of states.
We study the eigenvector problem in homogeneous superintegrable $N$-state chiral Potts model (CPM) by the symmetry principal. Using duality symmetry and (spin-)inversion in CPM, together with Onsager-algebra symmetry and $sl_2$-loop-algebra symmetry of the superintegrable $τ^{(2)}$-model, we construct the complete $k'$-dependent CPM-eigenvectors in the local spin basis for an arbitrary Onsager sector. In this paper, we present the complete classification of quantum numbers of superintegrable $τ^{(2)}$-model. Accordingly, there are four types of sectors. The relationships among Onsager sectors …
We uncover a connection between two seemingly separate subjects in integrable models: the representation theory of the affine Temperley-Lieb algebra, and the algebraic structure of solutions to the Bethe equations of the XXZ spin chain. We study the solution of Bethe equations analytically by computational algebraic geometry, and find that the solution space encodes rich information about the representation theory of Temperley-Lieb algebra. Using these connections, we compute the partition function of the completely-packed loop model and of the closely related random-cluster Potts model, on me…
The cyclically dominated voter model on a square lattice is extended by taking into consideration the variation of Potts energy during the nearest neighbor invasions. We have investigated the effect of surface tension on the self- organizing patterns maintained by cyclic invasions. A geometrical analysis is also developed tp study the three-color patterns. These investigations indicate clearly that in the "voter model" limit the pattern evolution is governed by the loop creation due to the overhanging during the interfacial roughening. Conversely, in the presence surface tension the evolution …
We considered Q-state Potts model on Bethe lattice in presence of external magnetic field for Q<2 by means of recursion relation technique. This allows to study the phase transition mechanism in terms of the obtained one dimensional rational mapping. The convergence of Feigenabaum $α$ and $δ$ exponents for the aforementioned mapping is investigated for the period doubling and three cyclic window. We regarded the Lyapunov exponent as an order parameter for the characterization of the model and discussed its dependence on temperature and magnetic field. Arnold tongues analogs with winding number…
We investigate the critical behavior of the two-dimensional 8-state Potts model with an aperiodic distribution of the exchange interactions between nearest-neighbor rows. The model is studied numerically through intensive Monte Carlo simulations using the Swendsen-Wang cluster algorithm. The transition point is located through duality relations, and the critical behavior is investigated using FSS techniques at criticality. For strong enough fluctuations of the aperiodic sequence under consideration, a second order phase transition is found. The exponents $β/ν$ and $γ/ν$ are obtained at the new…
We study a self-dual generalization of the Baxter-Wu model, employing results obtained by transfer matrix calculations of the magnetic scaling dimension and the free energy. While the pure critical Baxter-Wu model displays the critical behavior of the four-state Potts fixed point in two dimensions, in the sense that logarithmic corrections are absent, the introduction of different couplings in the up- and down triangles moves the model away from this fixed point, so that logarithmic corrections appear. Real couplings move the model into the first-order range, away from the behavior displayed b…
We present an exact renormalization group analysis of the Loschmidt amplitude of the quantum $N$-state Potts chain with random quench-disordered nearest neighbor bonds, under the extreme dynamical quantum quench. We prove that the phase transition of the Loschmidt rate function remains sharp in general. For typical bond distributions, the phase transition is found to be a linear-cusp, as in the pure model. For some special discrete bond distributions, however, the rate function exhibits logarithmic divergences. These singularities are due to the competition between the non-critical dynamical p…
We study phase-transitions of the ferromagnetic $q$-state Potts chain with random nearest-neighbour couplings having a variance $Δ^2$ and with homogeneous long-range interactions, which decay with the distance as a power $r^{-(1+σ)}$, $σ>0$. In the large-$q$ limit the free-energy of random samples of length $L \le 2048$ is calculated exactly by a combinatorial optimization algorithm. The phase-transition stays first-order for $σ< σ_c(Δ) \le 0.5$, while the correlation length becomes divergent at the transition point for $σ_c(Δ) < σ< 1$. In the latter regime the average magnetization is continu…
In a recent paper hep-lat/9704020 we investigated Potts models on ``thin'' random graphs -- generic Feynman diagrams, using the idea that such models may be expressed as the N --> 1 limit of a matrix model. The models displayed first order transitions for all q greater than 2, giving identical behaviour to the corresponding Bethe lattice. We use here one of the results of hep-lat/9704020 namely a general saddle point solution for a q state Potts model expressed as a function of q, to investigate some peculiar features of the percolative limit q -> 1 and compare the results with those on the Be…
We study the dependence of complex-temperature phase diagrams on details of the Hamiltonian, focusing on the effect of non-nearest-neighbor spin-spin couplings. For this purpose, we consider a simple exactly solvable model, the 1D Ising model with nearest-neighbor (NN) and next-to-nearest-neighbor (NNN) couplings. We work out the exact phase diagrams for various values of $J_{nnn}/J_{nn}$ and compare these with the case of pure nearest-neighbor (NN) couplings. We also give some similar results for the 1D Potts model with NN and NNN couplings.
We present the results of Monte Carlo simulations of two different Potts glass models with short range random interactions. In the first model a \pm J-distribution of the bonds is chosen, in the second model a Gaussian distribution. In both cases the first two moments of the distribution are chosen to be J_0=-1, Delta J=+1, so that no ferromagnetic ordering of the Potts spins can occur. We find that for all temperatures investigated the spin glass susceptibility remains finite, the spin glass order parameter remains zero, and that the specific heat has only a smooth Schottky-like peak. These r…
We study in this paper the phase transition in a mobile Potts model by the use of Monte Carlo simulation. The mobile Potts model is related to a diluted Potts model which is also studied here by a mean-field approximation. We consider a lattice where each site is either vacant or occupied by a $q$-state Potts spin. The Potts spin can move from one site to a nearby vacant site. In order to study the surface sublimation, we consider a system of Potts spins contained in a recipient with a concentration $c$ defined as the ratio of the number of Potts spins $N_s$ to the total number of lattice site…
We consider nearest-neighbor two-dimensional Potts models, with boundary conditions leading to the presence of an interface along the bottom wall of the box. We show that, after a suitable diffusive scaling, the interface weakly converges to the standard Brownian excursion.
We study the three-state antiferromagnetic Potts model on the simple-cubic lattice, paying attention to the surface critical behaviors. When the nearest neighboring interactions of the surface is tuned, we obtain a phase diagram similar to the XY model, owing to the emergent O(2) symmetry of the bulk critical point. For the ordinary transition, we get $y_{h1}=0.780(3)$, $η_\parallel=1.44(1)$, and $η_\perp=0.736(6)$; for the special transition, we get $y_s=0.59(1)$, $y_{h1}=1.693(2)$, $η_\parallel=-0.391(4)$, and $η_\perp=-0.179(5)$; in the extraordinary-log phase, the surface correlation funct…
We investigate numerically and analytically Potts models on ``thin'' random graphs -- generic Feynman diagrams, using the idea that such models may be expressed as the N --> 1 limit of a matrix model. The thin random graphs in this limit are locally tree-like, in distinction to the ``fat'' random graphs that appear in the planar Feynman diagram limit, more familiar from discretized models of two dimensional gravity. The interest of the thin graphs is that they give mean field theory behaviour for spin models living on them without infinite range interactions or the boundary problems of genuine…
Mixed-spin Ising model on a decorated Bethe lattice is rigorously solved by combining the decoration-iteration transformation with the method of exact recursion relations. Exact results for critical lines, compensation temperatures, total and sublattice magnetizations are obtained from a precise mapping relationship with the corresponding spin-1/2 Ising model on a simple (undecorated) Bethe lattice. The effect of next-nearest-neighbour interaction and single-ion anisotropy on magnetic properties of the ferrimagnetic model is investigated in particular. It is shown that the total magnetization …
We report several results concerning $W(Λ,q)=\exp(S_0/k_B)$, the exponent of the ground state entropy of the Potts antiferromagnet on a lattice $Λ$. First, we improve our previous rigorous lower bound on $W(hc,q)$ for the honeycomb (hc) lattice and find that it is extremely accurate; it agrees to the first eleven terms with the large-$q$ series for $W(hc,q)$. Second, we investigate the heteropolygonal Archimedean $4 \cdot 8^2$ lattice, derive a rigorous lower bound, on $W(4 \cdot 8^2,q)$, and calculate the large-$q$ series for this function to $O(y^{12})$ where $y=1/(q-1)$. Remarkably, these a…
We develop a transfer matrix method to compute exactly the spin-spin correlation functions of Bethe lattice spin models in the external magnetic field h and for any temperature T. We first compute the correlation function for the most general spin - S Ising model, which contains all possible single-ion and nearest-neighbor pair interactions. This general spin - S Ising model includes the spin-1/2 simple Ising model and the Blume-Emery-Griffiths (BEG) model as special cases. From the spin-spin correlation functions, we obtain functions of correlation length for the simple Ising model and BEG mo…
We consider ``lattice glass models'' in which each site can be occupied by at most one particle, and any particle may have at most l occupied nearest neighbors. Using the cavity method for locally tree-like lattices, we derive the phase diagram, with a particular focus on the vitreous phase and the highest packing limit. We also study the energy landscape via the configurational entropy, and discuss different equilibrium glassy phases. Finally, we show that a kinetic freezing, depending on the particular dynamical rules chosen for the model, can prevent the equilibrium glass transitions.
In this paper we develop a Bethe approximation, based on the cluster variation method, which is apt to study lattice models of branched polymers. We show that the method is extremely accurate in cases where exact results are known as, for instance, in the enumeration of spanning trees. Moreover, the expressions we obtain for the asymptotic number of spanning trees and lattice trees on a graph coincide with analogous expressions derived through different approaches. We study the phase diagram of lattice trees with nearest-neighbour attraction and branching energies. We find a collapse transitio…
We show here for the one-dimensional spin-1/2 ANNNI (axial-next-to-nearest-neighbor-Ising) model in an external magnetic field that the linear density of Yang-Lee zeros may diverge with critical exponent $σ= -2/3$ at the Yang-Lee edge singularity. The necessary condition for this unusual behavior is the triple degeneracy of the transfer matrix eigenvalues. If this condition is absent we have the usual value $σ= -1/2$. Analogous results have been found in the literature in the spin-1 Blume-Emery-Griffths model and in the three-state Potts model in a magnetic field with two complex components. O…
We study the low-temperature behavior and the phase transition of a thin film by Monte Carlo simulation. The thin film has a simple cubic lattice structure where each site is occupied by a Potts parameter which indicates the molecular orientation of the site. We take only three molecular orientations in this paper which correspond to the 3-state Potts model. The Hamiltonian of the system includes: (i) the exchange interaction $J_{ij}$ between nearest-neighbor sites $i$ and $j$ (ii) the long-range dipolar interaction of amplitude $D$ truncated at a cutoff distance $r_c$ (iii) a single-ion perpe…
We present the results of Monte Carlo simulations of two different 10-state Potts glasses with random nearest neighbor interactions on a simple cubic lattice. In the first model the interactions come from a \pm J distribution and in the second model from a Gaussian one, and in both cases the first two moments of the distribution are chosen to be equal to J_0=-1 and Delta J=1. At low temperatures the spin autocorrelation function for the \pm J model relaxes in several steps whereas the one for the Gaussian model shows only one. In both systems the relaxation time increases like an Arrhenius law…
We implement a new and accurate numerical entropic scheme to investigate the first-order transition features of the triangular Ising model with nearest-neighbor ($J_{nn}$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($J_{nnn}$) antiferromagnetic interactions in ratio $R=J_{nn}/J_{nnn}=1$. Important aspects of the existing theories of first-order transitions are briefly reviewed, tested on this model, and compared with previous work on the Potts model. Using lattices with linear sizes $L=30,40,...,100,120,140,160,200,240,360$ and 480 we estimate the thermal characteristics of the present weak first-order transit…
Some features of integrable lattice models are reviewed for the case of the six-vertex model. By the Bethe ansatz method we derive the free energy of the six-vertex model. Then, from the expression of the free energy we show analytically the critical singularity near the phase transition in the anti-ferroelectric regime, where the essential singularity similar to the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition appears. We discuss the connection of the six-vertex model to the conformal field theory with c=1. We also introduce various exactly solvable models defined on two-dimensional lattices such as the ch…
We show that a system of spinless Fermi particles, localized on the sites of the Bethe lattice with coordination number z and interacting through a repulsive nearest-neighbor interaction, exhibits a phase transition to a charge-ordered state. The phase diagram in the n-T plane is derived. Relevant thermodynamic quantities, such as the free energy, the specific heat, the entropy and the compressibility are analyzed in detail.
We prove that all Gibbs states of the q-state nearest neighbor Potts model on Z^2 below the critical temperature are convex combinations of the q pure phases; in particular, they are all translation invariant. To achieve this goal, we consider such models in large finite boxes with arbitrary boundary condition, and prove that the center of the box lies deeply inside a pure phase with high probability. Our estimate of the finite-volume error term is of essentially optimal order, which stems from the Brownian scaling of fluctuating interfaces. The results hold at any supercritical value of the i…
We give a general condition for a discrete spin system with nearest-neighbor interactions on the $\mathbb{Z}^d$ lattice to exhibit long-range order. The condition is applicable to systems with residual entropy in which the long-range order is entropically driven. As a main example we consider the antiferromagnetic $q$-state Potts model and rigorously prove the existence of a broken sub-lattice symmetry phase at low temperature and high dimension -- a new result for $q\ge 4$. As further examples, we prove the existence of an ordered phase in a clock model with hard constraints and extend the kn…
We investigate the influence of aperiodic modulations of the exchange interactions between nearest-neighbour rows on the phase transition of the two-dimensional eight-state Potts model. The systems are studied numerically through intensive Monte Carlo simulations using the Swendsen-Wang cluster algorithm for different aperiodic sequences. The transition point is located through duality relations, and the critical behaviour is investigated using FSS techniques at criticality. While the pure system exhibits a first-order transition, we show that the deterministic fluctuations resulting from the …
We analyse in depth an $S_3$-invariant nearest-neighbor quantum chain in the region of a U(1)-invariant self-dual multicritical point. We find four distinct proximate gapped phases. One has three-state Potts order, corresponding to topological order in a parafermionic formulation. Also nearby is a phase with "representation" symmetry-protected topological (RSPT) order. Its dual exhibits an unusual "not-A" order, where the spins prefer to align in two of the three directions. Within each of the four phases, we find a frustration-free point with exact ground state(s). The exact RSPT ground state…
We solve the antiferromagnetic transition for the Q-state Potts model (defined geometrically for Q generic) on the square lattice. The solution is based on a detailed analysis of the Bethe ansatz equations (which involve staggered source terms) and on extensive numerical diagonalization of transfer matrices. It involves subtle distinctions between the loop/cluster version of the model, and the associated RSOS and (twisted) vertex models. The latter's continuum limit involves two bosons, one which is compact and twisted, and the other which is not, with a total central charge c=2-6/t, for sqrt(…
We construct the fusion operators in the generalized $τ^{(2)}$-model using the fused $L$-operators, and verify the fusion relations with the truncation identity. The algebraic Bethe ansatz discussion is conducted on two special classes of $τ^{(2)}$ which include the superintegrable chiral Potts model. We then perform the parallel discussion on the XXZ spin chain at roots of unity, and demonstrate that the $sl_2$-loop-algebra symmetry exists for the root-of-unity XXZ spin chain with a higher spin, where the evaluation parameters for the symmetry algebra are identified by the explicit Fabricius-…
A new generalization of the t-J model with a nearest-neigbour hopping is formulated and solved exactly by the Bethe-ansatz method in the thermodymanic limit. The model describes the dymanics of fermions with different spins and with isotropic and anisotropic interactions.
Two examples of Microcanonical Potts models, 2-dimensional nearest neighbor and mean field, are considered via exact enumeration of states and analytical asymptotic methods. In the interval of energies corresponding to a first order phase transition, both of these models exhibit a convex dip in the entropy vs energy plot and a region with negative specific heat within the dip. It is observed that in the nearest neighbor model the dip flattens and disappears as the lattice size grows, while in the mean field model the dip persists even in the limit of an infinite system. If formal transitions f…
In a series of papers we have found identical behaviour for various spin models on thin random graphs - Feynman diagrams - and the corresponding Bethe lattices. In this note we observe that in all cases the ratios of various saddle point equations in the random graph approach are identical in form to the fixed point(s) of the recursion relations which are used to solve the models on the Bethe lattice. The loops in the random graphs thus have no influence in the thermodynamic limit for such ferromagnetic spin models. We consider the correspondence explicitly for Ising and q state Potts models a…
