We implement a new and accurate numerical entropic scheme to investigate the first-order transition features of the triangular Ising model with nearest-neighbor ($J_{nn}$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($J_{nnn}$) antiferromagnetic interactions in ratio $R=J_{nn}/J_{nnn}=1$. Important aspects of the existing theories of first-order transitions are briefly reviewed, tested on this model, and compared with previous work on the Potts model. Using lattices with linear sizes $L=30,40,...,100,120,140,160,200,240,360$ and 480 we estimate the thermal characteristics of the present weak first-order transition. Our results improve the original estimates of Rastelli et al. and verify all the generally accepted predictions of the finite-size scaling theory of first-order transitions, including transition point shifts, thermal, and magnetic anomalies. However, two of our findings are not compatible with current phenomenological expectations. The behavior of transition points, derived from the number-of-phases parameter, is not in accordance with the theoretically conjectured exponentially small shift behavior and the well-known double Gaussian approximation does not correctly describe higher correction terms of the energy cumulants. It is argued that this discrepancy has its origin in the commonly neglected contributions from domain wall corrections.
The Sznajd sociophysics model is generalized on the triangular lattice with pure antiferromagnetic opinion and also with both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic opinions. The slogan of the trade union "united we stand, divided we fall" can be realized via the propagation of ferromagnetic opinion of adjacent people in the union, but the propagation of antiferromagnetic opinion can be observed among the third countries between two big super powers or among the family members of conflicting parents. Fixed points are found in both models. The distributions of relaxation time of the mixed model ar…
This paper has a pedagogical introduction. We describe the correct method for performing Monte Carlo simulations of Ising model systems with spin greater than one half. Correct and incorrect procedures are clearly outlined and the consequences of using the incorrect procedure are shown. The difference between Kawasaki and Glauber dynamics is then outlined and both methods are applied to the antiferromagnetic square and triangular lattices for S =1.
The field-induced Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition in the ground state of the triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model is studied by the level-spectroscopy method. We analyze dimensions of operators around the BKT line, and estimate the BKT point $H_{\rm c}\simeq0.5229\pm0.001$, which is followed by a level-consistency check to demonstrate the accuracy of our estimate. Further we investigate the anisotropic case to clarify the stability of the field-induced string-density plateau against an incommensurate liquid state by the density-matrix renormalization-group method.
Antiferromagnetically coupled Ising s =3 spins on a triangular lattice are very close to ordering at zero temperature. The low temperature behaviour of a triangular lattice with Ising spins s =3 has been simulated by using both Glauber and Kawasaki dynamics. The formation of misfit clusters, which are essential for destabilizing the ordered state, are inhibited by the use of Kawasaki dynamics. The sublattice susceptibilities and the sublattice order parameter are found to depend qualitatively on the dynamics used so that robust ordering occurs when Kawasaki dynamics are employed. The thermal b…
We study a stacked triangular lattice Ising model with both intra- and inter-plane antiferromagnetic interactions in a field, by Monte Carlo simulation. We find only one phase transition from a paramagnetic to a partially disordered phase, which is of second order and 3D XY universality class. At low temperatures we identify two highly degenerate phases: at smaller (larger) fields the system shows long-range ordering in the stacking direction (within planes) but not in the planes (stacking direction). Nevertheless, crossovers to these phases do not have a character of conventional phase transi…
We investigate the triangular-lattice antiferromagnetic Ising model with a spatially anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic coupling, which was first discussed by Kitatani and Oguchi. By employing the effective geometric factor, we analyze the scaling dimensions of the operators around the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition lines, and determine the global phase diagram. Our numerical data exhibit that two types of BKT-transition lines separate the intermediate critical region from the ordered and disordered phases, and they do not merge into a single curve in the antifer…
We study phase transitions and thermodynamic properties in the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model with next-nearest-neighbor interaction on a Kagome lattice by Monte Carlo simulations. A histogram data analysis shows that a second order transition occurs in the model. From the analysis of obtained data, we can assume that next-nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions in two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model on a Kagome lattice excite the occurrence of a second order transition and unusual behavior of thermodynamic properties on the temperature dependence.
We study the spin-spin correlation function in or near the T=0 ground state of the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice. At zero temperature its modulation on the sublattices gives rise to two Bragg peaks in the structure factor, and a known expression for the algebraic decay of correlations enables us to examine the form of the diffusive scattering. We do so by means of a comparison between exact results and data calculated using standard Monte Carlo techniques. At non-zero temperatures the finite correlation length alters this form, and we account for the change by proposing…
We study the antiferromagnetic {\it XY} model on a triangular lattice by extensive Monte Carlo simulations, focusing on its ordering and critical properties. Our result clearly shows that two separate transitions occur at two distinct temperatures, the one at a higher temperature is associated with a $Z_2$-symmetry breaking driven by the chirality, and the one at a lower temperature is associated with the onset of the quasi-long-range order of the {\it XY} spin. We carefully examine the critical properties of each transition to find that the criticality of the chiral transition is consistent w…
In order to study effects of frustration in an itinerant electron system, we investigate ground states of the antiferromagnetic double-exchange model on a triangular lattice. In this model, pseudo-spins are coupled to electron transfer integrals in such a way that antiparallel configurations of pseudo-spins gain kinetic energies. Although the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice shows macroscopic dengenerate ground states, the present model shows that the degeneracy is lifted due to long-range natures of the double exchange interactions. Spin ordering at the ground state is al…
We use Monte Carlo and Transfer Matrix methods in combination with extrapolation schemes to determine the phase diagram of the 2D super-antiferromagnetic (SAF) Ising model with next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) interactions in a magnetic field. The interactions between nearest-neighbor (nn) spins are ferromagnetic along x, and antiferromagnetic along y. We find that for sufficiently low temperatures and fields, there exists a region limited by a critical line of 2nd-order transitions separating a SAF phase from a magnetically induced paramagnetic phase. We did not find any region with either first-o…
An $S=1/2$ triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with next-nearest-neighbor interactions is investigated under a magnetic field by the numerical-diagonalization method. It is known that, in both cases of weak and strong next-nearest-neighbor interactions, this system reveals a magnetization plateau at one-third of the saturated magnetization. We examine the stability of this magnetization plateau when the amplitude of next-nearest-neighbor interactions is varied. We find that a nonplateau region appears between the plateau phases in the cases of weak and strong next-nearest-neighbor in…
We study a frustrated antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in the presence of an external magnetic field and a single-ion anisotropy. Phase diagrams in the temperature-field plane for both easy-axis and easy-plane anisotropy of a varying strength are constructed in the regimes of a moderate and strong DMI by parallel tempering Monte Carlo simulations. For the considered range of parameters the phase diagrams featuring up to four ordered phases are identified. A skyrmion lattice (SkX) phase is found to be stabilized within s…
We study the anti-ferromagnetic six-state clock model with nearest neighbor interactions on a triangular lattice with extensive Monte-Carlo simulations. We find clear indications of two phase transitions at two different temperatures: Below $T_I$ a chirality order sets in and by a thorough finite size scaling analysis of the specific heat and the chirality correlation length we show that this transition is in the Ising universality class (with a non-vanishing chirality order parameter below $T_I$). At $T_{KT}(<T_I)$ the spin-spin correlation length as well as the spin susceptibility diverges a…

We determine thresholds $p_c$ for random site percolation on a triangular lattice for neighbourhoods containing nearest (NN), next-nearest (2NN), next-next-nearest (3NN), next-next-next-nearest (4NN) and next-next-next-next-nearest (5NN) neighbours, and their combinations forming regular hexagons (3NN+2NN+NN, 5NN+4NN+NN, 5NN+4NN+3NN+2NN, 5NN+4NN+3NN+2NN+NN). We use a fast Monte Carlo algorithm, by Newman and Ziff [M. E. J. Newman and R. M. Ziff, Physical Review E 64, 016706 (2001)], for obtaining the dependence of the largest cluster size on occupation probability. The method is combined with …
Effect of exchange anisotropy on the relaxation time of spin and vector chirality is studied for the antiferromagnetic classical Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice by using the nonequilibrium relaxation Monte Carlo method. We identify the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition and the chiral transition in a wide range of the anisotropy, even for very small anisotropy of $\sim$ 0.01%. As the anisotropy decreases, both the critical temperatures steeply decrease, while the BKT critical region becomes divergently wide. We elucidate a sharp "V shape" of the phase diagram around th…
We study effects of higher-order antinematic interactions on the critical behavior of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) $XY$ model on a triangular lattice, using Monte Carlo simulations. The parameter $q$ of the generalized antinematic (ANq) interaction is found to have a pronounced effect on the phase diagram topology by inducing new quasi-long-range ordered phases due to competition with the conventional AFM interaction as well as geometrical frustration. For values of $q$ divisible by 3 the conflict between the two interactions results in a frustrated canted AFM phase appearing at low temperature…
Using Monte Carlo and spin-dynamics methods, we have investigated the dynamic behavior of the classical, antiferromagnetic XY model on a triangular lattice with linear sizes $L \leq 300$. The temporal evolutions of spin configurations were obtained by solving numerically the coupled equations of motion for each spin using fourth-order Suzuki-Trotter decompositions of exponential operators. From space- and time-displaced spin-spin correlation functions and their space-time Fourier transforms we obtained the dynamic structure factor $S({\bf q},w)$ for momentum ${\bf q}$ and frequency $ω$. Below …
Using a Wang-Landau entropic sampling scheme, we investigate the effects of quenched bond randomness on a particular case of a triangular Ising model with nearest- ($J_{nn}$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($J_{nnn}$) antiferromagnetic interactions. We consider the case $R=J_{nnn}/J_{nn}=1$, for which the pure model is known to have a columnar ground state where rows of nearest-neighbor spins up and down alternate and undergoes a weak first-order phase transition from the ordered to the paramagnetic state. With the introduction of quenched bond randomness we observe the effects signaling the expect…
An anisotropic spin model on a triangular semiinfinite lattice with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbour interactions and one antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbour interaction is investigated by the cluster transfer-matrix method. A phase diagram with <2> antiphase, ferromagnetic, incommensurate, and disordered phase is obtained. The bulk uniaxial incommensurate structure modulated in the direction of the competing interactions is found between the <2> antiphase and the disordered phase. The incommensurate structure near the surface with free and <2> boundary condition is studied at different te…
It is known that there is no phase transition down to zero temperature in the antiferromagnetic Ising model on spatially anisotropic triangular lattices, in which the exchange coupling of one direction is stronger than those of other two directions. In the model, the low-temperature physics is governed by domain-wall excitations (defects) residing on bonds of the strong-coupling direction. In this letter, we show that an additional small attractive interaction between defects (a ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction in the weak-coupling direction) leads to a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Th…
We study phase transition behavior of the Heisenberg model on a distorted triangular lattice with competing interactions. The ground-state phase diagram indicates that underlying symmetry can be changed by tuning parameters. We focus on two cases in which a phase transition with discrete symmetry breaking occurs. The first is that the order parameter space is SO(3)$\times C_3$. In this case, a first-order phase transition, with threefold symmetry breaking, occurs. The second has the order parameter space SO(3)$\times Z_2$. In this case, a second-order phase transition occurs with twofold symme…
The spin-1/2 ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain with ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbour (NNN) interaction is investigated. The ground state is the Haldane phase for weak NNN interaction, and is the ferromagnetic phase for weak antiferromagnetic interaction. We find a series of topologically distinct spin-gap phases with various magnitudes of edge spins for strong NNN interaction. The phase boundaries between these phases are determined on the basis of the DMRG calculation with additional spins that compensate the edge spins. It is found that each of the exact soluti…
Different scenarios of the fluctuation-induced disordering of the striped phase which is formed at low temperatures in the triangular-lattice Ising model with the antiferromagnetic interaction of nearest and next-to-nearest neighbors are analyzed and compared. The dominant mechanism of the disordering is related to the formation of a network of domain walls, which is characterized by an extensive number of zero modes and has to appear via the first-order phase transition. In principle, this first-order transition can be preceded by a continuous one, related to the spontaneous formation of doub…
We obtain the phase diagram of the hard core lattice gas with third nearest neighbor exclusion on the triangular lattice using Monte Carlo simulations that are based on a rejection-free flat histogram algorithm. In a recent paper [J. Chem. Phys. 151, 104702 (2019)], it was claimed that the lattice gas with third nearest neighbor exclusion undergoes two phase transitions with increasing density, with the phase at intermediate densities exhibiting hexatic order with continuously varying exponents. Though a hexatic phase is expected when the exclusion range is large, it has not been seen earlier …
Geometrically frustrated materials have a ground-state degeneracy that may be lifted by subtle effects, such as higher order interactions causing small energetic preferences for ordered structures. Alternatively, ordering may result from entropic differences between configurations in an effect termed order-by-disorder. Motivated by recent experiments in a frustrated colloidal system in which ordering is suspected to result from entropy, we consider in this paper, the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a deformable triangular lattice. We calculate the displacements exactly at the microscopic leve…
Using a Monte Carlo method, we study the finite-temperature phase transition in the two-dimensional classical Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice with or without easy-plane anisotropy. The model takes account of competing interactions: a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction $J_1$ and an antiferromagnetic third nearest-neighbor interaction $J_3$. As a result, the ground state is a spiral spin configuration for $-4 < J_1/J_3 < 0$. In this structure, global spin rotation cannot compensate for the effect of 120-degree lattice rotation, in contrast to the conventional 120-degree structur…
A series of symmetry-protected topological(SPT) and trivial spin-gap phases in the spin-1/2 ferromagnetic--antiferromagnetic alternating Heisenberg chain with alternating next-nearest-neighbour interaction are investigated using two kinds of entanglement spectra defined by different divisions of the whole chain. In the case one of the next-nearest-neighbor interaction vanishes, the model reduces to the $Δ$-chain in which a series of spin-gap phases are found in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 77, 044707 (2008). From the degeneracy of the entanglement spectra, these phases are identified as the SPT and triv…
This study present a Monte Carlo investigations of low-temperature magnetic ordering and phase transitions in three-state Potts model on triangular lattice with various exchange interactions between nearest (J1) and next-nearest (J2) neighbors. The density of states for varying J1 and J2 are calculated. The magnetic structure of the ground state for various J1 and J2 are obtained. The critical temperature are calculated and the order of the phase transition determined. The density of states difference (DOSD) and histogram analysis method are used to investigate the order of the phase transitio…
We report a Monte Carlo study of the classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with easy axis anisotropy on the triangular lattice. Both the free energy cost for long wavelength spin waves as well as for the formation of free vortices are obtained from the spin stiffness and vorticity modulus respectively. Evidence for two distinct Kosterlitz-Thouless types of defect-mediated phase transitions at finite temperatures is presented.
We evaluate numerically certain multiple integrals representing nearest and next-nearest neighbor correlation functions of the spin-1/2 $XXZ$ Heisenberg infinite chain at finite temperatures.
Low-temperature magnetization curves and thermodynamics of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer with the antiferromagnetic intradimer interaction and either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interdimer interaction are investigated in a highly frustrated parameter region, where localized many-magnon eigenstates provide the most dominant contribution to magnetothermodynamics. Low-energy states of the highly frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer can be accordingly found from a mapping correspondence with an effective triangular-lattice spin-1/2 Ising model in a field. …
We study in this article a triangular lattice with Heisenberg spins interacting with each other via an antiferromagnetic exchange interaction $J$ and a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction $D$, between nearest-neighbors (NN). We consider two cases: the first case in which the DM vector $\mathbf D$ is perpendicular to the lattice plane and the second case where it lies in the plane. A magnetic field $H$ is applied perpendicular to the spin plane in both cases. The ground state (GS) of this system is calculated by minimizing the energy using the very fast steepest-descent method in the two cas…
We have studied the spin ordering of a dilute classical Heisenberg model with spin concentration $x$, and with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction $J_1$ and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction $J_2$. Magnetic phases at absolute zero temperature $T = 0$ are determined examining the stiffness of the ground state, and those at finite temperatures $T \neq 0$ are determined calculating the Binder parameter $g_L$ and the spin correlation length $ξ_L$. Three ordered phases appear in the $x-T$ phase diagram: (i) the ferromagnetic (FM) phase; (ii) the spin glass (SG) phase; and (…
Phase diagrams and hysteresis loops were obtained by Monte Carlo simulations and a mean-field method for a simplified model of a spin-crossover material with a two-step transition between the high-spin and low-spin states. This model is a mapping onto a square-lattice $S=1/2$ Ising model with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and ferromagnetic Husimi-Temperley (equivalent-neighbor) long-range interactions. Phase diagrams obtained by the two methods for weak and strong long-range interactions are found to be similar. However, for intermediate-strength long-range interactions, the Monte Carlo s…
We study diluted antiferromagnetic Ising models on triangular and kagome lattices in a magnetic field, using the replica-exchange Monte Carlo method. We observe seven and five plateaus in the magnetization curve of the diluted antiferromagnetic Ising model on the triangular and kagome lattices, respectively, when a magnetic field is applied. These observations contrast with the two plateaus observed in the pure model. The origin of multiple plateaus is investigated by considering the spin configuration of triangles in the diluted models. We compare these results with those of a diluted antifer…
We numerically investigate thermal entanglement of the spins (1/2,1) and (1/2,1/2) in the three-mixed (1/2,1,1/2) anisotropic Heisenberg XXZ spin system on a simple triangular cell under an inhomogeneous magnetic field. We show that the external magnetic field induces strong plateau formation in pairwise thermal entanglement for fixed parameters of Hamiltonian in the case of the ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic interactions. We also observe an unexpected critical point at finite temperature in the thermal entanglement of the spins (1/2,1) for antiferromagnetic case while the entanglement o…
Motivated by recent experiments with a Penning ion trap quantum simulator, we perform numerically exact Stochastic Series Expansion quantum Monte Carlo simulations of long-range transverse-field Ising models on a triangular lattice for different decay powers $α$ of the interactions. The phase boundary for the ferromagnet is obtained as a function of $α$. For antiferromagnetic interactions, there is strong indication that the transverse field stabilizes a clock ordered phase with sublattice magnetization $(M,-\frac{M}{2}, -\frac{M}{2})$ with unsaturated $M < 1$ in a process known as "order by d…
We study the phase transition behavior of a frustrated Heisenberg model on a stacked triangular lattice by Monte Carlo simulations. The model has three types of interactions: the ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction $J_1$ and antiferromagnetic third nearest-neighbor interaction $J_3$ in each triangular layer and the ferromagnetic interlayer interaction $J_\perp$. Frustration comes from the intralayer interactions $J_1$ and $J_3$. We focus on the case that the order parameter space is SO(3)$\times C_3$. We find that the model exhibits a first-order phase transition with breaking of the SO…
The phase diagram of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on an anisotropic triangular lattice of weakly coupled chains, a model relevant to Cs2CuCl4, is investigated using a renormalization group analysis, which includes marginal couplings important for connecting to numerical studies of this model. In particular, the relative stability of incommensurate spiral spin-density order and collinear antiferromagnetic order is studied. While incommensurate spiral order is found to exist over most of the phase diagram in the presence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, at small interchain…
We study the chromatic polynomial P_G(q) for m \times n triangular-lattice strips of widths m <= 12_P, 9_F (with periodic or free transverse boundary conditions, respectively) and arbitrary lengths n (with free longitudinal boundary conditions). The chromatic polynomial gives the zero-temperature limit of the partition function for the q-state Potts antiferromagnet. We compute the transfer matrix for such strips in the Fortuin--Kasteleyn representation and obtain the corresponding accumulation sets of chromatic zeros in the complex q-plane in the limit n\to\infty. We recompute the limiting cur…
We study the anisotropic spin-half antiferromagnetic triangular Heisenberg lattice in two dimensions, seen as a set of chains with couplings J (J') along (in between) chains, respectively. Our focus is on the incommensurate correlation that emerges in this system in a wide parameter range due to the intrinsic frustration of the spins. We study this system with traditional DMRG using cylindrical boundary conditions to least constrain possible incommensurate order. Despite that the limit of essentially decoupled chains J'/J < 0.5 is not very accessible numerically, it appears that the spin-spin …
We present phase diagrams, free-energy landscapes, and order-parameter distributions for a model spin-crossover material with a two-step transition between the high-spin and low-spin states (a square-lattice Ising model with antiferromagnetic-like nearest-neighbor and ferromagnetic-like long-range interactions) [P. A. Rikvold et al., Phys. Rev. B 93, 064109 (2016)]. The results are obtained by a recently introduced, macroscopically constrained Wang-Landau Monte Carlo simulation method [C. H. Chan, G. Brown, and P. A. Rikvold, Phys. Rev. E 95, 053302 (2017)]. The method's computational efficien…
In numerous diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) systems, the competition takes place between the short-range antiferromagnetic (AF) superexchange interactions and the long-range Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) coupling mediated by the charge carriers. Such a situation strongly influences the critical temperature, the maximization of which constitutes a challenging task in DMS physics and technology. The aim of the paper is to discuss theoretically the limiting effect of AF interactions between nearest-neighbour magnetic ions on the stability of inhomogeneous ferromagnetic state in a mode…
The extended Hubbard model in the atomic limit, which is equivalent to lattice $S=1/2$ fermionic gas, is considered on the triangular lattice. The model includes onsite Hubbard $U$ interaction and both nearest-neighbor ($W_{1}$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($W_{2}$) density-density intersite interactions. The variational approach treating the $U$ term exactly and the $W_l$ terms in the mean-field approximation is used to investigate thermodynamics of the model and to find its finite temperature ($T>0$) phase diagrams (as a function of particle concentration) for $W_{1}>0$ and $W_{2}<0$. Two diff…
