This paper has a pedagogical introduction. We describe the correct method for performing Monte Carlo simulations of Ising model systems with spin greater than one half. Correct and incorrect procedures are clearly outlined and the consequences of using the incorrect procedure are shown. The difference between Kawasaki and Glauber dynamics is then outlined and both methods are applied to the antiferromagnetic square and triangular lattices for S =1.
In this article, we investigate the competing Glauber-type and Kawasaki-type dynamics with small-world network (SWN) effect, in the framework of the Gaussian model. The Glauber-type single-spin transition mechanism with probability p simulates the contact of the system with a heat bath and the Kawasaki-type dynamics with probability 1-p simulates an external energy flux. Two different types of SWN effect are studied, one with the total number of links increased and the other with it conserved. The competition of the dynamics leads to an interesting self-organization process that can be charact…
Using a quantum formulation of the master equation we study a kinetic Ising model with competing stochastic processes: the Glauber dynamics with probability $p$ and the Kawasaki dynamics with probability $1 - p$. Introducing explicitely the coupling to a heat bath and the mutual static interaction of the spins the model can be traced back exactly to a Ginzburg Landau functional when the interaction is of long range order. The dependence of the correlation length on the temperature and on the probability $p$ is calculated. In case that the spins are subject to flip processes the correlation len…
Antiferromagnetically coupled Ising s =3 spins on a triangular lattice are very close to ordering at zero temperature. The low temperature behaviour of a triangular lattice with Ising spins s =3 has been simulated by using both Glauber and Kawasaki dynamics. The formation of misfit clusters, which are essential for destabilizing the ordered state, are inhibited by the use of Kawasaki dynamics. The sublattice susceptibilities and the sublattice order parameter are found to depend qualitatively on the dynamics used so that robust ordering occurs when Kawasaki dynamics are employed. The thermal b…
On directed Barabasi-Albert networks with two and seven neighbours selected by each added site, the Ising model does not seem to show a spontaneous magnetisation. Instead, the decay time for flipping of the magnetisation follows an Arrhenius law for Metropolis and Glauber algorithms, but for Wolff cluster flipping the magnetisation decays exponentially with time. On these networks the magnetisation behaviour of the Ising model, with Glauber, HeatBath, Metropolis, Wolf or Swendsen-Wang algorithm competing against Kawasaki dynamics, is studied by Monte Carlo simulations. We show that the model e…
We investigate the temporal evolution of a ferromagnetic system of Ising spins evolving under Kawasaki dynamics from a random initial condition, in spatial dimensions one and two. We examine in detail the asymptotic behaviour of the two-time correlation and response functions. The linear response is measured without applying a field, using a recently proposed algorithm. For the chain at vanishingly small temperature, we introduce an accelerated dynamics which has the virtue of projecting the system into the asymptotic scaling regime. This allows us to revisit critically previous works on the b…
In this paper, we offer a competing dynamic analysis of the one-dimensional Ising model built on the small-world network (SWN). Adding-type SWNs are investigated in detail using a simplified Hamiltonian of mean-field nature, and the result of rewiring-type is given because of the similarities of these two typical networks. We study the dynamical processes with competing Glauber mechanism and Kawasaki mechanism. The Glauber-type single-spin transition mechanism with probability p simulates the contact of the system with a heat bath and the Kawasaki-type dynamics with probability 1-p simulates a…
In this paper we show that the equilibrium macroscopic entropy of a generic non reversible Kawasaki+Glauber dynamics is a non local functional of the density. This implies that equilibrium correlations extend to macroscopic distances.
We present a numerical study of the dynamics of the one-dimensional Ising model by applying the large-deviation method to describe ensembles of dynamical trajectories. In this approach trajectories are classified according to a dynamical order parameter and the structure of ensembles of trajectories can be understood from the properties of large-deviation functions, which play the role of dynamical free-energies. We consider both Glauber and Kawasaki dynamics, and also the presence of a magnetic field. For Glauber dynamics in the absence of a field we confirm the analytic predictions of Jack a…
A fluid composed of two molecular species may undergo phase segregation via spinodal decomposition. However, if the two molecular species can interconvert, e.g. change their chirality, then a phenomenon of phase amplification, which has not been studied so far, emerges. As a result, eventually, one phase will completely eliminate the other one. We model this phenomenon on an Ising system which relaxes to equilibrium through a hybrid of Kawasaki-diffusion and Glauber-interconversion dynamics. By introducing a probability of Glauber-interconversion dynamics, we show that the particle conservatio…
We investigate the spreading of damage in Ising models with Kawasaki spin-exchange dynamics which conserves the magnetization. We first modify a recent master equation approach to account for dynamic rules involving more than a single site. We then derive an effective-field theory for damage spreading in Ising models with Kawasaki spin-exchange dynamics and solve it for a two-dimensional model on a honeycomb lattice. In contrast to the cases of Glauber or heat-bath dynamics, we find that the damage always spreads and never heals. In the long-time limit the average Hamming distance approaches t…
We study the domain growth of the one-dimensional kinetic Ising model under the competing influence of Glauber dynamics at temperature T and Kawasaki dynamics with a configuration-independent rate. The scaling of the structure factor is shown to have the form for nonconserved dynamics with the corrections arising from the spin-exchange process, i.e., $S(k,t)=Lg_0(kL,t/τ)+g_1(kL,t/τ)+... $, and the corresponding scaling functions are calculated analytically. A correction to the Porod law at zero temperature is also given.
The Ising model doesn't have a strictly defined dynamics, only a spectrum. There are different ways to equip it with a time dependence e.g. the Glauber or the Kawasaki dynamics, which are both stochastic, but it means there is a master equation which can also describes their dynamics. We present a Gluber-type master equation derived from the Redfield equation, where the spin system is coupled to a bosonic bath. We derive a time dependent mean field equation which describes the relaxation of the spin system at finite temperature. Using the fully connected, uniform Ising model the relaxation tim…
We combine Creutz energy conservation with Kawasaki spin exchange to simulate the microcanonical dynamics of a system of interacting particles. Relaxation occurs via Glauber spin-flip activation using a self-consistent temperature. Heterogeneity in the dynamics comes from finite-size constraints on the spin exchange that yield a distribution of correlated regions. The simulation produces a high-frequency response that can be identified with the boson peak, and a lower-frequency peak that contains non-Debye relaxation and non-Arrhenius activation, similar to the primary response of supercooled …
We consider in parallel three one-dimensional spin models with kinetic constraints: the paramagnetic constrained Ising chain, the ferromagnetic Ising chain with constrained Glauber dynamics, and the same chain with constrained Kawasaki dynamics. At zero temperature the dynamics of these models is fully irreversible, leading to an exponentially large number of blocked states. Using a mapping of these spin systems onto sequential adsorption models of, respectively, monomers, dimers, and hollow trimers, we present exact results on the statistics of blocked states. We determine the distribution of…
We study the early time dynamics of bimodal spin systems on $2d$ lattices evolving with different microscopic stochastic updates. We treat the ferromagnetic Ising model with locally conserved order parameter (Kawasaki dynamics), the same model with globally conserved order parameter (nonlocal spin exchanges), and the voter model. As already observed for non-conserved order parameter dynamics (Glauber dynamics), in all the cases in which the stochastic dynamics satisfy detailed balance, the critical percolation state persists over a long period of time before usual coarsening of domains takes o…
Although many computational methods for rare event sampling exist, this type of calculation is not usually practical for general nonequilibrium conditions, with macroscopically irreversible dynamics and away from both stationary and metastable states. A novel method for calculating the time-series of the probability of a rare event is presented which is designed for these conditions. The method is validated for the cases of the Glauber-Ising model under time-varying shear flow, the Kawasaki-Ising model after a quench into the region between nucleation dominated and spinodal decomposition domin…
We show that the stochastic dynamics of a large class of one-dimensional interacting particle systems may be presented by integrable quantum spin Hamiltonians. Generalizing earlier work \cite{Stin95a,Stin95b} we present an alternative description of these processes in terms of a time-dependent operator algebra with quadratic relations. These relations generate the Bethe ansatz equations for the spectrum and turn the calculation of time-dependent expectation values into the problem of either finding representations of this algebra or of solving functional equations for the initial values of the…
The Cooperative Motion Algorithm is an efficient lattice method to simulate dense polymer systems and is often used with two different criteria to generate a Markov chain in the configuration space. While the first method is the well-established Metropolis algorithm, the other one is an heuristic algorithm which needs justification. As an introductory step towards justification for the 3D lattice polymers, we study a simple system which is the binary equimolar uid on a 2D triangular lattice. Since all lattice sites are occupied only selected type of motions are considered, such the vacancy mov…
Low temperature dynamics of Ising ferromagnets under finite magnetic fields are studied in terms of quantum spin representations of stochastic evolution operators. These are constructed for the Glauber dynamic as well as for a modification of this latter, introduced by K. Park {\it et al.} in Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 92}, 015701 (2004). In both cases the relaxation time after a field quench is evaluated both numerically and analytically using the spectrum gap of the corresponding operators. The numerical work employs standard recursive techniques following a symmetrization of the evolution operat…
We study the nonequilibrium properties of directed Ising models with non conserved dynamics, in which each spin is influenced by only a subset of its nearest neighbours. We treat the following models: (i) the one-dimensional chain; (ii) the two-dimensional square lattice; (iii) the two-dimensional triangular lattice; (iv) the three-dimensional cubic lattice. We raise and answer the question: (a) Under what conditions is the stationary state described by the equilibrium Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution? We show that for models (i), (ii), and (iii), in which each spin "sees" only half of its neighbo…
