Low-temperature magnetization curves and thermodynamics of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer with the antiferromagnetic intradimer interaction and either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interdimer interaction are investigated in a highly frustrated parameter region, where localized many-magnon eigenstates provide the most dominant contribution to magnetothermodynamics. Low-energy states of the highly frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer can be accordingly found from a mapping correspondence with an effective triangular-lattice spin-1/2 Ising model in a field. A description based on the effective Ising model implies that the frustrated Heisenberg triangular bilayer with the ferromagnetic interdimer coupling displays in a zero-temperature magnetization curve discontinuous magnetization jump, which is reduced upon increasing of temperature until a continuous field-driven phase transition from the Ising universality class is reached at a certain critical temperature. The frustrated Heisenberg triangular bilayer with the antiferromagnetic interdimer coupling contrarily exhibits multistep magnetization curve with intermediate plateaus at one-third and two-thirds of the saturation magnetization, whereas discontinuous magnetization jumps observable at zero temperature change to continuous field-driven phase transitions from the universality class of three-state Potts model at sufficiently low temperatures. Exact results and Monte Carlo simulations of the effective Ising model are confronted with full exact diagonalization data for the Heisenberg triangular bilayer in order to corroborate these findings.
The magnetothermodynamics of strongly frustrated classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on kagome, garnet, and pyrochlore lattices is examined. The field induced adiabatic temperature change (dT/dH)_S is significantly larger for such systems compared to ordinary non-frustrated magnets and also exceeds the cooling rate of an ideal paramagnet in a wide range of fields. An enhancement of the magnetocaloric effect is related to presence of a macroscopic number of soft modes in frustrated magnets below the saturation field. Theoretical predictions are confirmed with extensive Monte Carlo simulations…
We consider a Potts model diluted by fully frustrated Ising spins. The model corresponds to a fully frustrated Potts model with variables having an integer absolute value and a sign. This model presents precursor phenomena of a glass transition in the high-temperature region. We show that the onset of these phenomena can be related to a thermodynamic transition. Furthermore this transition can be mapped onto a percolation transition. We numerically study the phase diagram in 2 dimensions (2D) for this model with frustration and {\em without} disorder and we compare it to the phase diagram of $…
We report on Monte Carlo simulations for the two-dimensional frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ Ising model on the square lattice. Recent analysis has shown that for the phase transition from the paramagnetic state to the antiferromagnetic collinear state different phase-transition scenarios apply depending on the value of the frustration $J_2 / J_1$. In particular a region with critical Ashkin-Teller-like behavior, i.e., a second-order phase transition with varying critical exponents, and a noncritical region with first-order indications were verified. However, the exact transition point $[J_2/J_1]_C$ be…
The frustrated q-state Potts model is solved exactly on a hierarchical lattice, yielding chaos under rescaling, namely the signature of a spin-glass phase, as previously seen for the Ising (q=2) model. However, the ground-state entropy introduced by the (q>2)-state antiferromagnetic Potts bond induces an escape from chaos as multiplicity q increases. The frustration versus multiplicity phase diagram has a reentrant (as a function of frustration) chaotic phase.
We investigate a 4-state ferromagnetic Potts model with a special type of geometrical frustration on a three dimensional diamond lattice by means of Wang-Landau Monte Carlo simulation motivated by a peculiar structural phase transition found in $β$-pyrochlore oxide KOs$_2$O$_6$. We find that this model undergoes unconventional first-order phase transition; half of the spins in the system order in a two dimensional hexagonal-sheet-like structure, while the remaining half stay disordered. The ordered sheets and the disordered sheets stack one after another. We obtain a fairly large residual entr…
Above the saturation field, geometrically frustrated quantum antiferromagnets have dispersionless low-energy branches of excitations corresponding to localized spin-flip modes. Transition into a partially magnetized state occurs via condensation of an infinite number of degrees of freedom. The ground state below the phase transition is a magnon crystal, which breaks only translational symmetry and preserves spin-rotations about the field direction. We give a detailed review of recent works on physics of such phase transitions and present further theoretical developments. Specifically, the low-…
To understand the origin of the dynamical transition, between high temperature exponential relaxation and low temperature nonexponential relaxation, that occurs well above the static transition in glassy systems, a frustrated spin model, with and without disorder, is considered. The model has two phase transitions, the lower being a standard spin glass transition (in presence of disorder) or fully frustrated Ising (in absence of disorder), and the higher being a Potts transition. Monte Carlo results clarify that in the model with (or without) disorder the precursor phenomena are related to the…
This study present a Monte Carlo investigations of low-temperature magnetic ordering and phase transitions in three-state Potts model on triangular lattice with various exchange interactions between nearest (J1) and next-nearest (J2) neighbors. The density of states for varying J1 and J2 are calculated. The magnetic structure of the ground state for various J1 and J2 are obtained. The critical temperature are calculated and the order of the phase transition determined. The density of states difference (DOSD) and histogram analysis method are used to investigate the order of the phase transitio…
Here we consider a one-dimensional $q$-state Potts model with an external magnetic field and an anisotropic interaction that selects neighboring sites that are in the spin state 1. The present model exhibits an unusual behavior in the low-temperature region, where we observe an anomalous vigorous change in the entropy for a given temperature. There is a steep behavior at a given temperature in entropy as a function of temperature, quite similar to first-order discontinuity, but there is no jump in the entropy. Similarly, second derivative quantities like specific heat and magnetic susceptibili…
We discuss the critical behaviour of 2D Ising and q-states Potts models coupled by their energy density. We found new tricritical points. The procedure employed is the renormalisation approach of the perturbations series around conformal field theories representing pure models as already used for disordered spins models. This analysis could be useful to understand the physics of coupled critical models like the fully frustrated XY model.
We study the challenging thermal phase transition to stripe order in the frustrated square-lattice Ising model with couplings J1<0 (nearest-neighbor, ferromagnetic) and J2>0 (second-neighbor, antiferromagnetic) for g=J2/|J1|>1/2. Using Monte Carlo simulations and known analytical results, we demonstrate Ashkin-Teller criticality for g>= g*, i.e., the critical exponents vary continuously between those of the 4-state Potts model at g=g* and the Ising model for g -> infinity. Thus, stripe transitions offer a route to realizing a related class of conformal field theories with conformal charge c=1 …
uch experimental and theoretical efforts have been devoted in the past twenty years to search for a genuine thermodynamic reentrant phase transition from a ferromagnetic to either a paramagnetic or spin glass phase in disordered ferromagnets. So far, no real system or theoretical model of a short-range spin glass system has been shown to convincingly display such a reentrant transition. We present here results from Migdal-Kadanoff real-space renormalization-group calculations that provide for the first time strong evidence for ferromagnetic to paramagnetic reentrance in Potts spin glasses on h…
We study phase transitions of the Potts model on the centered-triangular lattice with two types of couplings, namely $K$ between neighboring triangular sites, and $J$ between the centered and the triangular sites. Results are obtained by means of a finite-size analysis based on numerical transfer matrix calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. Our investigation covers the whole $(K, J)$ phase diagram, but we find that most of the interesting physics applies to the antiferromagnetic case $K<0$, where the model is geometrically frustrated. In particular, we find that there are, for all finite $…
We introduce a Potts model with quenched, frustrated disorder, that enjoys of a gauge symmetry that forbids spontaneous magnetization, and allows the glassy phase to extend from $T_c$ down to T=0. We study numerical the 4 dimensional model with $q=4$ states. We show the existence of a glassy phase, and we characterize it by studying the probability distributions of an order parameter, the binder cumulant and the divergence of the overlap susceptibility. We show that the dynamical behavior of the system is characterized by aging.
We study the dynamical properties of the fully frustrated Ising model. Due to the absence of disorder the model, contrary to spin glass, does not exhibit any Griffiths phase, which has been associated to non-exponential relaxation dynamics. Nevertheless we find numerically that the model exhibits a stretched exponential behavior below a temperature T_p corresponding to the percolation transition of the Kasteleyn-Fortuin clusters. We have also found that the critical behavior of this clusters for a fully frustrated q-state spin model at the percolation threshold is strongly affected by frustrat…
We consider discrete spin models on arbitrary planar graphs and lattices with frustrated interactions. We first analyze the Ising model with frustrated plaquettes. We use an algebraic approach to derive the result that an Ising model with some of its plaquettes frustrated has a dual which is an Ising model with an external field $iπ/2$ applied to the dual sites centered at frustrated plaquettes. In the case that all plaquettes are frustrated, this leads to the known result that the dual model has a uniform field $iπ/2$ whose partition function can be evaluated in the thermodynamic limit for re…
We study the thermal phase transitions of the four-fold degenerate phases (the plaquette and single stripe states) in two-dimensional frustrated Ising model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice using Monte Carlo simulations. The critical Ashkin-Teller-like behavior is identified both in the parameter regions with the plaquette and single stripe phases, respectively. The four-state Potts-critical end points differentiating the continuous transitions from the first-order ones are estimated based on finite-size scaling analyses. Furthermore, similar behavior of the transition to the four-fold single…
We study the properties of the q-state frustrated bond percolation model by a Monte Carlo "bond flip" dynamics, using an algorithm originally devised by Sweeny and suitably modified to treat the presence of frustration. We analyze the percolation transition of the model, and find that it falls in the universality class of the q/2-state ferromagnetic Potts model. We then investigate the bond flip dynamics of the model, and find that for temperatures lower than the percolation transition Tp the relaxation functions show a two step decay, reminiscent of the relaxation of glass forming liquids. Th…
We consider the thermal phase transition from a paramagnetic to stripe-antiferromagnetic phase in the frustrated two-dimensional square-lattice Ising model with competing interactions J1<0 (nearest neighbor, ferromagnetic) and J2 >0 (second neighbor, antiferromagnetic). The striped phase breaks a Z4 symmetry and is stabilized at low temperatures for g=J2/|J1|>1/2. Despite the simplicity of the model, it has proved difficult to precisely determine the order and the universality class of the phase transitions. This was done convincingly only recently by Jin et al. [PRL 108, 045702 (2012)]. Here,…
We study the two-dimensional +/-J Ising model, three-state Potts model and four-state Potts model, by the numerical transfer matrix method to investigate the behaviour of the sample-to-sample fluctuations of the internal energy on the Nishimori line. The result shows a maximum at the multicritical point in all the models we investigated. The large sample-to-sample fluctuations of the internal energy as well as the existence of a singularity in these fluctuations imply that the bond configuration (or, equivalently, the distribution of frustrated plaquettes) may be experiencing a non-trivial cha…
We study phase transition behavior of the Heisenberg model on a distorted triangular lattice with competing interactions. The ground-state phase diagram indicates that underlying symmetry can be changed by tuning parameters. We focus on two cases in which a phase transition with discrete symmetry breaking occurs. The first is that the order parameter space is SO(3)$\times C_3$. In this case, a first-order phase transition, with threefold symmetry breaking, occurs. The second has the order parameter space SO(3)$\times Z_2$. In this case, a second-order phase transition occurs with twofold symme…
We discuss the effects of exponential fragmentation of the Hilbert space on phase transitions in the context of coupled ferromagnetic Ising models in arbitrary dimension with special emphasis on the one dimensional case. We show that the dynamics generated by quantum fluctuations is bounded within spatial partitions of the system and weak mixing of these partitions caused by global transverse fields leads to a zero temperature phase with ordering in the local product of both Ising copies but no long range order in either species. This leads to a natural connection with the Ashkin-Teller univer…
In this work, we investigate the phase transitions and critical behaviors of the frustrated J1-J2-J3 Ising model on the square lattice using Monte Carlo simulations, and particular attention goes to the effect of the second next nearest neighbor interaction J3 on the phase transition from a disordered state to the single stripe antiferromagnetic state. A continuous Ashkin-Teller-like transition behavior in a certain range of J3 is identified, while the 4-state Potts-critical end point [J3/J1]C is estimated based on the analytic method reported in earlier work [Jin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 108,…
